HOT HEADLINES FROM MANDALIKA: "Jonny will come back very strong… I need some help"

The 2023 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship has completed two rounds from 12 so far and already, there’re major stories and question marks. As is normal after each round, we’ve got our ears to the ground to get all the insight from the stars of the show, with new riders making a name for themselves as well as Championship contenders making bold claims in this week’s hot headlines.

Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK): “Jonny will come back very strong… we need to fight Ducati and I need him; I need some help”

Looking ahead to the next round after scoring more points than anyone else at Mandalika, Toprak Razgatlioglu assessed arch-rival Jonathan Rea’s (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) start to 2023: “I hope that this year at Assen, we are focused on the race with Jonny, and I hope that we don’t crash! We need a good position, especially Jonny. For Jonny, it’s not been an easy weekend and I think it’s a similar problem. His front tyre dropped a lot like in Race 1, but in the hot conditions, the Kawasaki doesn’t work well. Jonny is still very strong, and I believe he will come back very strong, especially at Assen. We’ll see, we need to fight Ducati and I need him; I need some help. Locatelli’s first two weekends are very strong and maybe we’re fighting Ducati together.”

Xavi Vierge (Team HRC): “I have the level to fight for the Championship, I’ll work so hard to do that with Honda”

Speaking after his first WorldSBK podium, Xavi Vierge was ecstatic on Sunday: “I have no words right now! We’ve fought so hard for this since the first day I jumped on the bike, but it hasn’t been easy. It looks like we’ve made a step forward; the reality is that I think we are getting closer, and I hope we can continue working in that direction to always be inside the top six. As a rider, you always need to think that you are the best; if not, you start off already losing. It’s true that in this world, it is easy to lose that if the results aren’t coming. Unfortunately, in my career, there are some really good moments but then followed by really bad moments, and I didn’t understand why. I tried to keep all the experience from all the years to then take the maximum. I think I have the level to fight for the Championship and I will work so hard to do that with Honda.”

Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati): “If I was on my own, then I wouldn’t crash”

Still the Championship leader, Alvaro Bautista discussed his Turn 12 crash in the Superpole Race: “I entered to Turn 12, and Jonathan got the inside. Both of us wanted to go on the good line and then we both went off the line! I tried to pick up the bike and be smooth with the gas, but I just touched it a bit and then I lost the rear. Jonathan was the same! I think at another circuit, I wouldn’t crash. If I was on my own, then I wouldn’t crash, but it was a normal manoeuvre. The problem is that when you have a thin racing line and both of you want the same bit of track, it’s impossible. I don’t want to just let him pass, I wanted to stay! He wanted to stay, we touched a little bit, and I crash. It was a good overtake, aggressive but I didn’t crash because of that, I crashed because I was off the line.”

Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK): “Very difficult weekend with not so many positives… I was riding over my head”

With just 13 points scored over the weekend, it was another tough weekend for Jonathan Rea: “It has been a very difficult weekend, with not so many positives. We, step-by-step, found a better direction. The track here in Mandalika has been quite inconsistent from Friday, when the grip level was really low, but we understood on race day that the grip level was incredibly high. So, we never nailed the setup perfectly, but I felt that we got better. In the races I felt my rhythm was OK but unfortunately in the Superpole Race I found some traffic in front. I am frustrated and I found it very difficult to pass anyone on acceleration or on the brakes. I was riding over my head sometimes on the brakes and in the corners trying to stay with the group.”

Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team): “He ruined the race of Baz and for me…”

A strong weekend for rookie Danilo Petrucci, who outlined his podium target, but also aired thoughts on Alex Lowes, following the pair’s collision in the Superpole Race: “I’m really happy, I didn’t expect to be so fast, especially with the lap times. In Race 2, I didn’t change the tyre as I was feeling confident. I am happy for the team as now, we’re back in parc ferme. I said after Race 1 that I was happy but not completely satisfied as our target is to stand on the podium. I think we have this potential. In the Superpole Race, it’s like going bumper car racing! I don’t understand the behaviour of Lowes… in the first start, he ruined the race of Baz and for me, and then we had a red flag. I was in front and from the images and from race direction, they said that he made a mistake. He hit me from behind and destroyed my exhaust. It’s not OK to justify a mistake; it’s the first lap but you ruin a race of two other riders.”

Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) “When I saw the red flag at 2.5s, I said ‘f**k’… I need to be smarter”

A great shame for Michael Ruben Rinaldi on Sunday as a podium went begging, but a clear step has been made by the Italian: “Since Friday, with a new front tyre, I do some laps and then it drops, and I can’t ride. This is what happened in Race 2. When I restarted the race, not everyone has a new tyre, so at the beginning, I felt OK with the bike, and I pushed and gained 1.5s. Then, I couldn’t push anymore as I had no grip; Alvaro arrived and passed me, so on the last lap, I just tried not to crash. On the exit of Turn 8, my bike shook a lot and I looked at the handlebar to try and control it but then I looked ahead, and I missed the braking point. It’s a shame. When I saw the red flag at 2.5s, I said ‘f**k’, because I knew the problem I’d face. When the race restarted, I felt good but in the last four laps, I didn’t have a card to play. The speed is there but we need to work a little bit better, and I need to not make mistakes; I need to be smarter.”

Andrea Locatelli: (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) “We didn’t need to do anything crazy; he tried and basically destroyed my race”

Third the Championship and the only rider to finish in the top five in every race this season, Andrea Locatelli spoke about Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) in Race 2: “In the second restart, we started from P7. The problem was that in the first part of the race, after I overtook Toprak, Bassani took me out wide at Turn 12 and I lost a lot of positions. This was a bit wrong. We got two podiums though, so we need to be proud. I think he needs to be calmer as it was just the second lap. I was fast and I had a good feeling. I think he can try to stay behind me, follow me and then, we have 21 laps… it’s important to start well and I was in P1, and he was in P2. I thought we didn’t need to do anything crazy, but he tried and basically destroyed my race a little bit.”

UPS AND DOWNS: Razgatlioglu kickstarts his title challenge as Kawasaki struggle again

As with every MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship round, there was drama throughout, and the Motul Indonesian Round was no exception at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit. Crashes, first wins of 2023 and much more featured in Indonesia as the second round of the 2023 concluded and here we take a look at some of the ups and downs throughout the Indonesian Round, from the first-time winners in 2023, new podium finishers and struggles for some.

Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) kickstarted his title challenge with victory in the Tissot Superpole Race, while he was on the podium in both Race 1 and Race 2 as he closed the gap on Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) in the title fight and moved into second place in the Championship standings ahead of teammate Andrea Locatelli. Razgatlioglu fought for the win in the early stages of Race 1 but dropped to second before responding in Sunday’s shortened Superpole Race and then taking second again in Race 2.

Race 2 also featured a new face on the podium in WorldSBK as Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) climbed onto the rostrum with third place, benefitting from an error from Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) on the final lap of the restarted race. Vierge became the 128th rider to claim a podium in WorldSBK history with his third-place finish and it was also Honda’s first since teammate Iker Lecuona claimed third at Assen in 2022. Vierge’s podium means four manufacturers – Ducati, Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki – all stood on the podium for the first time since 2021.

Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) enjoyed his best WorldSBK round so far as he claimed his first top-five finish in Race 1 on Saturday and he backed that up with sixth place in Race 2, where he also claimed top Independent honours  Although he was tenth in the Superpole Race, it means Petrucci has record four-top ten finishes in his four full-length races so far in WorldSBK as he looks to fight for podiums and wins in his maiden campaign.

Despite a massive Race 2 crash, Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) enjoyed a strong weekend. The Dutch rider claimed sixth in Race 1 and eighth in the Superpole Race after starting from tenth on the grid after he qualified as the fastest BMW rider. In Race 2, he was fighting to be in the top ten once again but had a huge highside coming out of Turn 11 which ended his race.

In terms of downs, it was another tough weekend for Kawasaki and riders Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) and teammate Alex Lowes. Although Lowes scored their only podium of the weekend, he was involved in a Superpole Race crash with Petrucci and Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW). Later in the restarted Superpole Race, Lowes came together with Baz although Lowes could continue on his way to the podium. For Rea, he had an accident at Turn 2 in the Superpole Race which brought out the red flags while he also crashed at Turn 7 in Race 2. Also, in the Tissot Superpole session, Rea was given a three-place grid penalty for slow riding.

It was also a mixed weekend for Rinaldi during the weekend. He showed strong pace throughout but he was hampered by crashes at Turn 1 in Race 1, where he made contact with Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) and in Warm Up on Sunday morning. He was on course for second place in Race 2 but an error on the last lap meant he ran wide and dropped two positions to leave him in fourth place.

Rea: “We never nailed the setup perfectly… a very difficult weekend”

As the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship paddock moved from Australia to Indonesia for the Motul Indonesian Round, one question being asked was whether Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) would be able to bounce back from a tricky season-opening round. At the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit, Rea had another difficult weekend as he scored only 13 points in three races including crashing out of Race 2 when running in the top five.

Rea was fourth in Friday’s Free Practice 2 session, the faster of the two Friday practice sessions, which also put him in the same position in the combined standings. In Saturday’s practice, he took sixth place in the standings before taking fifth place in the Tissot Superpole session although his best time was half-a-second down on polesitter Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK). Despite fifth in Superpole, Rea started Race 1 from eighth place after being given a three-place grid drop by the FIM WorldSBK Stewards for slow riding in Superpole.

The six-time Champion was unable to make progress and was classified in ninth place in Race 1, his worst finish since Race 1 at Magny-Cours last year. In the Superpole Race, starting from fifth, Rea took fourth place behind teammate Alex Lowes but this was also a complicated affair: the race was red flagged after Rea crashed at Turn 2 on Lap 2, a lap after Lowes, Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) and Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) had come together. The pair took to the restarted race from the original positions to take third and fourth.

In Race 2, Rea had been running in the top six in the restarted race and moved up to fifth after passing Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) on Lap 8. However, a lap later, Rea’s race came to an end when he crashed out at the high-speed Turn 7 after losing the front of his ZX-10RR machine. After the round’s action concluded, Rea elaborated on his Indonesian Round and what went wrong for him across the three days of action.

Rea said: “It has been a very difficult weekend, with not so many positives. We, step-by-step, found a better direction. The track here in Mandalika has been quite inconsistent from Friday, when the grip level was really low, but we understood on race day that the grip level was incredibly high. So, we never nailed the setup perfectly, but I felt that we got better. In the races I felt my rhythm was OK but unfortunately in the Superpole Race I found some traffic in front of me and it was very difficult to pass. But I felt my pace was quite good. In Race 2 I lost the front. Not exactly quite sure why, but it is quite windy in that area. I think the wind just picked the front up.

“I am frustrated, and I found it very difficult to pass anyone on acceleration or on the brakes. I was riding over my head sometimes on the brakes and in the corners trying to stay with the group. But we have to accept this tough weekend, try to learn from it and then put it behind us when we head back to Europe. We will have much more information now. So even as we are disappointed, we need to keep our heads up and keep fighting. I feel Assen is a great track to come back to with some strong results.”

What caused Rinaldi’s error in Race 2 to deny him a Mandalika podium?

Race 2 in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship was a rollercoaster affair for Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit. The Italian rider had led throughout the shortened and restarted Race 2 during the Motul Indonesian Round but found himself in fourth place at the chequered flag behind teammate Alvaro Bautista as well as Toprak Razgatligolu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) and Xavi Vierge (Team HRC).

The original race was red flagged on Lap 8 after a crash at Turn 11 involving Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) and Philipp Oettl (Team GoEleven) with Rinaldi more than two seconds clear of Razgatlioglu at their last completed timing point. In the seven full laps prior to the red flags, Rinaldi had started from seventh, was fourth at the end of Lap 2, second a lap later and took the lead on Lap 4.

He started the restarted race, which ran to a distance of 14 laps, from pole position and was able to maintain first place until Lap 13 of 14 when Bautista overtook him. The Spaniard had been closing in on his teammate throughout the closing stages and made a move into Turn 10 to demote Rinaldi into second place. On the final lap, Rinaldi went wide at the same corner which allowed Razgatlioglu and Vierge through as the Spanish rider took his first WorldSBK podium and demoted Rinaldi to fourth place.

Looking back on his weekend, and explaining what happened on Lap 14, Rinaldi said: “I’m upset because on Saturday, I made a mistake and crashed. On Sunday, I said I cannot change the past and I will try to push and see what happens. On Friday, we showed our strength. I started Race 2 and I felt good. I made a lot of overtakes. I was feeling good and I started to get my rhythm and lapping pretty quickly. When I was 2.5 seconds clear, there was a red flag. I said, ‘come on… maybe it’s not my time today!’. I went into the pits. We started the race again, but the problem was I started, like everybody else, with used tyres. We didn’t have new tyres. I used the fronts on Friday which meant that after a few laps I didn’t have front grip. I was pushing and my pace was pretty quick. Only Alvaro in the last part of the race was similar to me but then I dropped. When I dropped, I didn’t want to make a mistake. In Warm Up, when the tyres dropped, I crashed. I knew what the limit was, and I just wanted to bring the bike home. I almost did but on the last lap I almost crashed again. To try and have control of the bike, I took the focus off the brakes and as soon as I looked at the braking zone, I was late. I made a mistake and finished fourth. This year, we’ve shown our speed is there. After leading almost all the race, and not getting a podium at least, I’m upset.”

Rinaldi had shown strong pace throughout the weekend but also had a couple of crashes, including in Race 1 on Saturday and in Sunday’s Warm Up session. He also revealed in the Superpole Race that he had an issue in the opening laps which left him down the order to finish in seventh place; the reason why he started Race 2 there. He said: “In the Superpole Race, I had an issue with the engine brake. In the first two laps, as soon as I braked, the rear tyre locked, and I went wide two times. I changed the engine brake and I took it off more or less. I was able to lap quickly but I already lost too much time in the opening laps, so I finished at the back. Maybe it was not my lucky weekend.”

Gardner on his fightback from last to seventh: “It was a good race and a positive day!”

After fighting illness throughout the Motul Indonesian Round, Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) was able to claim his best MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship result to date with seventh place in Race 2 at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit. Gardner was forced to miss Saturday’s action through illness but responded in style throughout Sunday’s two races to fight his way through the field.

As Gardner missed out on Saturday’s Tissot Superpole session, he was forced to start the Tissot Superpole Race from the back of the grid. As he was unable to finish in the top nine in the shortened eight-lap fight, he once again started from last place in Race 2 which was red-flagged and restarted, with the restarted race shortened to 14 laps.

The grid for the restarted race was based on each rider’s last completed timing point and the Australian rookie was 11th at this point, meaning he gained positions for the second start and he used this to his full advantage. He climbed up the field once again to finish in seventh place, recording his second top-ten finish in his short WorldSBK career but also his best result to date with seventh place.

Looking back on Sunday, Gardner said: “I don’t feel amazing, to be honest. After yesterday, I thought today’s not even possible. We pushed hard to come back. We tried in Warm Up and it was okay. The Superpole Race wasn’t so bad. Finally, we made Race 2. Unfortunately, we had to start from last but, in the end, we had a good race and managed to come back to seventh. It wasn’t bad. Honestly, it was a good race and a positive day. It was really difficult. I’m glad it’s over and I went to go rest at home now!”

With a gap in the calendar to come, Gardner also elaborated on what his plans were for the break. He said: “We have testing at Montmelo, a two-day test and there are a few things there we want to try that’ll be important. The other days, I’ll be training and on the other days I’ll be working a little bit on my cars.”

Where does Redding want to find improvements on the M 1000 RR?

Race 2 in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship was a mixed affair for Scott Redding (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit during the Motul Indonesian Round. The British rider finished the race in tenth spot but last ground when the red flags were deployed right after he had a small crash, meaning he had to start the restarted race from 14th place.

Redding was battling with Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) in the early stages of Race 2 when the pair came together at Turn 16 with Locatelli able to continue and Redding down on the track. The British rider re-mounted his M 1000 RR but, with the red flags deployed, the grid for the restarted race was taken from each rider’s last completed timing point. This meant Redding dropped out of the top ten and started from 14th.

The British rider was able to fight back again to take tenth spot in Race 2 in Indonesia as he looks to build on some solid pace throughout the weekend. It was also a strong showing from teammate Michael van der Mark with the Dutchman finishing Race 1 and the Tissot Superpole Race inside the top eight, while he was in the fight for another top ten finish in Race 2 before he had a huge highside and an accident with Philipp Oettl (Team GoEleven) brought out the red flags.

Discussing his Sunday in Indonesia, Reddingsaid: “I crashed in the main race trying to overtake. In the races, it was a better day for me today after a disappointing day yesterday. I felt better already in the Warm Up and in the race I felt pretty good this morning. In Race 2, I felt good but then I had the small crash and it was a restart; I had to start 14th instead of eighth. The field is so tight at the moment it’s really hard to make any difference. I managed to move up in the beginning and then made a small mistake at Turn 1 because the wind was really strong, then nothing, then really strong and changing direction every other lap. I made a small mistake, dropped back, and ended up P10. It’s the first time this year that I’ve felt more feeling with the bike and feeling like I can actually push with the bike. I hope we can continue this on for the rest of the season.”

The factory BMW test will complete some test days before they head to the iconic TT Circuit Assen for the Dutch Round in April as they look to keep refining their 2023 M 1000 RR, with Redding discussing after the Indonesian Round where he would like to continue improving the bike. The 2023 model, which includes several upgrades including to the aerodynamics and a new gearbox, has completed two rounds of the 2023 season so far with a best result of sixth.

Talking about where he wants to improve, Redding said: “For me, it’s getting the bike to turn a bit more and we need to get more acceleration. I follow some guys on the exit and the acceleration is just unbelievable. Some guys have a step between. I can see that it’s actual drive they’re getting, and I feel like we if we can make a step, it’ll make us more competitive and be able to ride with a bit more ease. We’re always trying to close the gap in acceleration and then we’ve pushed a lot with the front. If we can improve this, I’ll be happy.”

Bautista battles back to take Race 2 victory at Mandalika, Vierge claims maiden WorldSBK podium

The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship’s visit to the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit for the Motul Indonesian Round featured another dramatic race in Race 2 as Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) fought back to claim victory in Indonesia in a red-flagged Race 2 after battling with teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi. It was also a memorable race for Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) as he claimed his first WorldSBK podium after a strong Indonesian Round.

FIGHTING BACK: Bautista fights from tenth to first…

The original race was red flagged at the start of Lap 8 after an incident at Turn 11 involving Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) and Philipp Oettl (Team GoEleven) with both riders retiring from the race and unable to take the restart. Van der Mark was taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash. The Dutchman was diagnosed with fractures to the base of the middle phalanx on his fourth and fifth fingers on his left hand. The starting grid for the restarted race was based on the last completed timing point for every rider and the race distanced reduced to 14 laps for the restarted race.

Rinaldi started the restarted race from pole position and, despite losing momentum at the start, was able to hold that throughout the opening laps of the 14-lap race. The Italian was able to take advantage of the battling behind him, including between teammate Alvaro Bautista and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) for second place. Bautista overtook Razgatlioglu on Lap 4 at Turn 15 to move into second place before setting his sights on his teammate.

The gap was at over one second at when Bautista passed Razgatlioglu before the reigning Champion started closing in on teammate. Bautista, who started the original race from tenth place after a Superpole Race crash and then fourth for the restarted race, lost time when he ran wide at Turn 1 when the gap was down to half-a-second, losing around one second, before he closed down the gap again. By Lap 11, Bautista had closed the gap back down to a tenth. Bautista made the move on his teammate on Lap 13 of 14 at Turn 10 to move into the lead of the race. Bautista had opted to switch tyres in the red flag period as he switched from the SCX tyre for the original race to the SC0 for the restarted race.

On the final lap, Rinaldi ran wide at Turn 10 and lost two positions to Razgatlioglu and Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) in third place with Vierge taking his first WorldSBK podium after claiming third place after he started the restarted race from third on the grid. He was running in the chasing group throughout Race 2 and was able to take advantage of Rinaldi running wide to move into the podium places behind Razgatlioglu, who had been fighting for the podium throughout the restarted race.

Bautista was able to claim his 37th victory in WorldSBK and his fifth out of six races in 2023, while it was also his 60th podium for Ducati. This number puts him level with Troy Corser in terms of podiums for the Italian manufacturer and he sits exactly 40 behind Carl Fogarty. Razgatlioglu’s second place moved him level with Aaron Slight on 87 WorldSBK podiums while Vierge became the 128th rider to take a podium in WorldSBK.

IN THE TOP SIX: six seconds separating the top six

Rinaldi ended up in fourth place and less than a second clear of Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) in fifth place with the two Italians separated by just 0.780s at the end of the race. Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) continued his impressive Indonesian Round with sixth place with Petrucci less than a second behind Locatelli in sixth place. Locatelli had briefly led the original race but lost ground shortly afterwards, dropping him down the order on the grid for the restarted race.

IN THE TOP TEN: fighting from the back

Australian rookie Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) overcame illness to record his best WorldSBK result to date with seventh place despite starting the original race from last place after missing Saturday’s Tissot Superpole session. Gardner was 11th on the restarted grid and moved up the order to finish ahead of Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing). Bassani had been in the top four but was penalized for irresponsible riding in the original race and ordered to drop one place. As he looked to allow Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) through, Razgatlioglu was able to sneak through and Bassani lost two places. To take eighth place. Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) was ninth in Race 2, ahead of Scott Redding (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team).

COMPLETING THE POINTS: leaving Indonesia with point

American star Garrett Gerloff (Bonovo Action BMW) finished directly behind Redding with 11th place and the pair were separated by only two tenths at the end of the race. Rookie Dominique Aegerter (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) took 12th spot ahead of Lowes in 13th and Lorenzo Baldassarri (GMT94 Yamaha) with the Italian bettering his previous best WorldSBK result set in Race 1. Malaysian rider Hafizh Syahrin (PETRONAS MIE MS Racing HONDA Team) rounded out the last of the classified riders and the points scorers with 15th place.

HOUSEKEEPING: to note from Race 2

Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing MOVISIO) did not get underway when the lights went out after he had a technical issue on the grid, with the Czech rider retiring from the race. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) brought his bike into the pits after five laps and, as he was not classified when the red flag was shown, did not take to the restarted race. Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) crashed out of the race after he crashed at Turn 7 with the six-time Champion taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash. Rea was diagnosed with a right distal thigh deep abrasion following his check-up.

Oli Bayliss expands on the Portimao crash

Oli Bayliss crashed at Portimao’s turn five during his first day of testing for the 2022 World Supersport Championship earlier this week in Portugal. The tumble came only nine laps into his first session on the bike and resulted in a broken ankle, here the young Aussie expands on what went down.

This is such a cool track, such a big learning experience. We headed out, didn’t feel horrible on the bike, but just not normal, we have a Panigale V2 at home we have been riding a fair bit, but two completely different feelings.

“We started doing laps, the feeling comes, comes, comes, maybe I got a little bit too excited, bit too much gas and a big high-side out of five. 

“I can’t really remember, I can remember crashing, but I don’t really know how I landed, I think my foot may have got crushed under the bike, which resulted in me spending a couple of hours at the hospital and getting a cast on my ankle. 

“The next time we will be back on track with Barni Racing will be 16-17 March at Misano, I am going to be well fit by then, going to make sure in these next four weeks we will do everything we possibly can to get me 100 per cent. 

“Leading up to this Portimao Test I was so excited, and then this happened and it has kinda knocked me down a little bit, but I know we can be pretty fast, but also know it is going to be a tough year, it is such a strong championship this year but we are going to do our best and see what we can do. We have got a good package and I am keen. 

“Everyone in the team is great, so although we didn’t have the best first day, we still have a lot more room to improve on and we can grow together, as this is the teams first year in World Supersport also. Going to be a hard year but I am sure we can go good.”

Toprak tops Portimao WorldSBK Test with fastest ever SBK laps of Portimao

2022 Portimao WorldSBK Test Day Two

The final day of testing for Motul FIM Superbike World Championship teams and riders at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve came to a close on Wednesday with lap record pace on display from both Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK), with the pair lapping the 4.592km circuit in the 1m39s using Pirelli’s new SCQ tyre.

Rea was the first rider to dip below the 1m39s bracket just before the midway point of the session with a 1m39.851s but reigning World Champion Razgatlioglu was able to better more than two-tenths with just over an hour of testing remaining; the pair split by just 0.235s. Razgatlioglu’s time of 1m39.616ss beat his own pole time from 2021 by almost 0.5s. Razgatlioglu set six lap times in the 1m39s bracket, using the A557 tyre used throughout 2021, across five different runs, on laps 28, 45, 48, 49, 53 and 61, while Rea only set one lap time in the 1m39s.

For comparative purposes, the MotoGP qualiying lap record is 1m38.862 (Quartararo 2021) and the race lap record 1m39.450 (Rins 2021).

Razgatlıoğlu and his Pata Yamaha team-mate Andrea Locatelli will next be in action at a private MotorLand Aragon test on 3-4 March, alongside the GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team who will complete their first outing of 2022 with riders Garrett Gerloff and Kohta Nozane. The target at Aragon for Yamaha will be to re-confirm the development plan completed over the winter and find a strong base set-up at a track that hasn’t often played to the Yamaha R1 WorldSBK’s strengths.

After a long time, we ride for first time yesterday and I am very happy to be back with the team and on my bike. On the first day, we try the electronic updates and we work through every session to try to find the best set-up. Also, today we were working a lot to find a good set-up but it is not 100 per cent yet because this is all still very new. This is step-by-step and now Yamaha will look at the data and we try again at the next test. I’m very happy with these two days, we set some very good lap times with the race tyre also. Thank you to my team, they do an incredible job like always.

It’s great to be back at work, especially in beautiful weather in early February at the Algarve International Circuit. It’s been a long time off the bikes for Toprak and Loka, neither have turned a wheel since our fantastic last day of the 2021 season. Yesterday was a case of getting them up to speed as much as it was about the technical details. We didn’t have a big test program here, but the modified riding position parts that Yamaha brought were immediately very positive for both riders, improving the feeling on corner entry and their general feeling to control the bike. We’ve also worked on some electronic updates, which required patience for both riders, but in the end we were able to get through that full program as well with competitive lap times. To end the test quickest was great, particularly considering this is our first running of the year. We’ll just keep working away and we look forward to the next stages of development in Aragón in a few weeks’ time.”

This week Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jonathan Rea and his crew worked had been working on chassis and electronic set-ups, with the results of a long run in the afternoon session being particularly positive, especially in terms of tyre usage over full race distance. Jonathan also set his best lap time on one of the new SCQ development tyres that single make supplier Pirelli brought to his test.

We got a lot of laps in at this test. We have been going back and forward because we had a couple of chassis items we were not sure about. Finally I think we can be pretty confident that we have confirmed a couple of items we found in Jerez at the previous tests. We finally put the package together. In the middle of the day Pirelli brought some tyres that we had to try and then we worked on our plan in the afternoon. We did a long race simulation at the end – and some practice starts that were much better than the ones on the first day. During the long run the feeling was that the set-up was taking some feeling away ‘from my hand’ but it is actually better. Normally in Portimao there is a big tyre drop after ten or 15 laps, but today I did not experience any drop in the long run. I’m pretty happy with that and we will keep working on that side of things. It is important to be fast but it is important to be fast at the end of races. I think we can safely say we managed that today. So, all-in-all, it was a pretty solid day. I think we have a pretty good handle on what our base set-up is going to be to start the year.

Over the two days Johnny set a lot of laps. Today, at the end, he was tired because we made so many laps and even in the afternoon we made a real long run, 19-20 laps. We made a good test. We have been focusing during the tests in Jerez and Portimao to understand some items to build the base to start the season in Motorland Aragon. Here, we had a chance to compare things again in these two days and the weather was very good. We collected very helpful information to understand the next step to build the package. We also focused with the electronics to give a little bit to Johnny in some areas. We are all happy and now we have time to analyse some things and prepare for the next test. We have had the first impressions of our competitors at this test and I think everybody knows who will be fighting for the championship. It is a little bit more clear. Now, we will try to prepare everything for the next test.”

Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) completed the top three as he continued to adjust to life back at Ducati. Despite a Turn 8 crash that brought out the Red Flags, the Spanish rider was able to add 68 laps to his tally for the test with a best time of 1m40.055s, set on Pirelli’s SCX tyre. Bautista has been able to try a new swingarm on his Ducati Panigale V4 R and a smaller fuel tank to suit his stature throughout the test as well as trying Pirelli’s SCQ tyre to be used throughout the 2022 campaign.

I am very satisfied with these two days of testing. The feeling is already good and I am having a lot of fun. I feel that the experience I have gained over the last few years is helping me. If I have to be honest, I have found myself on the bike better than I expected. We worked a lot on the tyres today, trying out the new solution brought in by Pirelli. Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) came home in fourth place as he looked at his outright performance on the ZX-10RR after hailing Tuesday’s running as one of his best days in Kawasaki colours. Lowes added 83 laps to his tally for the two-day test with a best time of 1m40.335s. The British rider also wanted to try the SCQ tyre throughout the test with the tyre supplier bringing new solutions of the tyre compared to what was available at the Jerez test.

We have had a really good test here and I think I did 162 laps over the two days. That is the best thing for me because I have not done a full day’s testing for over a year because of the all the injuries I have had. So to do 160-odd laps at a good pace, no mistakes, and while working hard on the bike; I am really happy. That is one box ticked off. In terms of settings on the bike we made some improvements but it looks like the other guys have also made some. I am really happy with the work we have done but we still need to find a couple of tenths or so before the start of the season. This is the best I have felt on the bike in a long, long time. I am really happy and we are going to work hard with my crew chief Marcel during this little break before we have our Montmelo test at the end of March.

We had a very good test and clearly Alex made an impressive recovery from his 2021 injuries over the winter. He did not feel any type of fatigue. He is at full strength, so it is impressive how well he recovered in the last two-and-a-half months. A lot of respect for that. Alex was able to increase his speed lap-by-lap over these two days. We did not make any change to the bike set-up we just tested our updated material. This Portimao test was the point for us to have a clear idea about our bike specification for the coming season. From today we can say that we know what we will race for about 99% of the bike. This was our target and we reached our target. Alex was fast, ridiculously consistent when he did his long runs, and I am happy he could match his race speed to the competition. On race tyres and over distance he can match their speed. We are very confident and we have two more tests in front of us before the start of the season. Now, we can start to look at the smaller details because all the big items are done.

Around three-tenths off. Lowes was Italian rider Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) who completed 77 laps as he and his team worked on some new parts as well as the setup of electronics on his YZF-R1.

It was our first days of testing for this year and the feeling with the bike came immediately good for me. We worked a lot with the race tyre, so we didn’t focus on one fast lap, but to work around the bike. We understand a lot more now, and we can for sure arrive in Aragón more ready. Now, we will see what we can do together for the new season. We improved a lot on the rider position as well, which is important for my feeling on the bike. We need to find more on the set-up, but we will also have new parts to try at the coming tests. My team has worked hard and I’m very happy for what they have achieved over the winter, I am sure we will be ready for the first race.

Philipp Oettl (Team GoEleven) headed up the Independent riders on day two of the test despite an afternoon crash at the high speed right-hand Turn One. The German rider was okay following the crash that brought out the Red Flag although cost him some valuable track time ahead of his rookie season. Oettl, who had been looking to improve his Ducati’s set up for him, completed 63 laps on Wednesday with a best time of 1m41.061s, putting in a late lap to jump up to sixth in the standings.

Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) was able to try a new swing-arm on his Ducati Panigale V4 as well as the new SCQ tyre from Pirelli, with the Italian completing 52 laps for a best time of 1m41.143s.

It has been a tough two days of testing. On the first day, we lapped without working on the set-up in particular: the feeling was positive, and – with the race tire – we had better results than last year’s race. Today we concentrated on some new solutions without trying to set the lap-time. Unfortunately, because of the pain in my back, I wasn’t able to try the new SCQ brought by Pirelli“.

French rider Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha) was able to get his hands on some new parts for his Yamaha YZF-R1, components that had been used in 2021 by the factory squad, including a new fairing and screen. While testing these items, Ponsson racked up 51 laps with a best time of 1m42.374s.

Rookie Luca Bernardi (Barni Spark Racing Team) rounded out the WorldSBK field on his second day of action on his Ducati bike, with the Sammarinese rider adding 54 laps to his tally. On his first time with a WorldSBK machine, and his first time on track since an injury sustained at Magny-Cours, Bernardi posted a best lap time of 1m42.961s.

WorldSSP rookie Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) topped the timesheets for the second day running on his Ducati Panigale V2 machine with the Italian manufacturer returning to WorldSSP for 2022. Bulega first tested the bike in November at Jerez and added another 48 laps of experience to the bike in Portugal, with a best time of 1’43.876s.

Another rookie, Maximilian Kofler (CM Racing), was second in the standings on day two of testing with the Austrian racking up 58 laps with a best time of 1’45.511s. Nicholas Spinelli (Barni Spark Racing Team), testing in place of Oli Bayliss who fractured his ankle in a crash on day one, added 46 laps to the team’s tally over the course of the Portimao test with a best time of 1’46.946s.
