Bike travel author holds virtual book talk

Even the pandemic can’t stop world motorcycle travel author Heather Ellis.

The Aussie rider will share her inspirational travel experiences by motorcycle through Africa and the Silk Road on an online author talk at 11am next Saturday (12 Dec 2020) through the Snowy Monaro Regional Library.

“‘I really miss speaking in person, but due to COVID, libraries still can’t hold author talks,”  says the two-time book author.

“The great thing about being on Zoom is people can attend from anywhere, learn about my travels and ask questions.

“Hopefully, we can all be back to travelling again next year.”

Heather is the author of two travel memoirs: Ubuntu: One Woman’s Motorcycle Odyssey Across Africa (Black Inc., 2016) and Timeless On The Silk Road: An Odyssey From London to Hanoi (Phonte Publishing, 2019).

Ubuntu details Heather’s epic motorcycle journey from south to north Africa from 1993 to 1994. Timeless On The Silk Road is about her solo motorcycle odyssey along the fabled Silk Roads of antiquity.

Both her memoirs are filled with survival-against-the-odds adventures that unfold as deeply spiritual journeys of personal growth that resonate with all who read her books. Both books are listed as bestsellers on Amazon.

Heather’s background includes time as a child living on a sheep station in Australia’s outback where she learnt to ride a motorcycle, made friends with the local Aboriginal children and developed a love of the desert.

Years later, while working as a radiation safety technician at a uranium mine, Heather realised her ambition to travel the world by motorcycle.

Your chance to go WYLD on an electric chopper

Brisbane riders have the chance to go wild on a locally designed WYLD mini electric chopper at the “Launch, Show & Ride EV Expo” at University of Southern Queensland’s Springfield Campus next week.

The WYLD is produced by Brisbane-based electric light vehicle company EMoS, formerly known as e-Motion Concepts.

The e-Moped will cost from $A2999 to $A5599 depending on battery size.

EMoS will launch the bike at the event in the USQ’s Springfield campus car park of Block B at University Drive, on 12 December 2020, 9am to noon.

And you can get a chance to have a test ride.

In fact, because it is governed at 50m/h top speed it’s classed as a moped, so you don’t even need a motorcycle licence. (Mopeds can be ridden on a car licence in  Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory.)

Extending the special moped licence to all states is one of the key points of a Two Wheel Action Group petition to state and federal ministers. Click here to read more and sign the petition.

While you’re at the Expo, you can see and ride the future of electric vehicles with a display of EMoS light electric vehicles (LEVs) to transport people and goods.

Ride Sports will also display their range of e-bikes and the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA) will have information about electric vehicles and some electric cars on show.

As part of the Australian launch of the EMoS WYLD, the company will give away one of their iLARK three-wheeled personal e-scooters to one lucky attendant.

EMoS co-founder Harry Proskefalas visitors will be able to learn more about the coming electric vehicle revolution.

“The venue at USQ Springfield campus is very fitting, with USQ’s own commitment to sustainability, such as the 2 megawatt solar project and green transport initiatives,” he says.

The WYLD features a removable battery and you buy a backup 20Ah battery with 80km of range for $600 or a 30Ah battery with 90km range for $850.

It has fat 12-inch tyres, a solo saddle, mini ape-hanger bars, digital instruments and Harley-esque styling in red or blue.

Another Toy Run falls to COVID

The Melbourne-based Toy Run For the Father Bob Maguire Foundation has been cancelled due the COVID restrictions of 50 people at outdoor events.

It follows the recent announcement that COVID travel restrictions had forced the 43rd Melbourne Toy Run to operate as a virtual event.

In NSW, the 43rd Newcastle Toy Run will collect gifts, but the ride is off, while the Motorcycle Riders’ Association 41st Toy Run in Tasmania will go ahead as a restricted, ticketed event with details sent to ticket holders soon.

Toy Run For the Father Bob Maguire Foundation organiser Cate Hughes says the “tough decision” was made not only because of COVID restrictions but also to protect Fr Bob “who is particularly vulnerable due to his rare illness and age”.

However, efforts to raise funds and gifts for the appeal are still going ahead.

Fr Bob or Foundation staff will be at Scotties Garage Toy Run After Party this Sunday afternoon and there are some “mystery rides” still on which will collect funds and gifts for the appeal.

New Aussie motorcycle YouTube channel launches

Thailand’s loss is Australia’s gain with expat Aussie Les Nyerges returning Down Under after 27 years in Thailand creating successful motorcycle and travel channels on YouTube.

Les returned to Brisbane earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and hasn’t been able to return.

“I’ve still got a tub of unopened yoghurt sitting in the fridge,” he says.

“And then there’s my Ducati Monster 795 that I’m desperately missing.”

Les Nyerges
Les Nyerges and his Ducati Monster in happier times in Thailand

Les doesn’t know when he will be able to return to Thailand, so he has decided to start an Aussie-based motorcycle and travel lifestyle channel called Living for the Ride.

And I get to star in the very first edition as the founder of Motorbike Writer.

I can’t say I’m the most inspiring subject with some even going so far as to say it’s four minutes of their life they will never get back!
However, you have to admit the production values are excellent.

A nd so they should be; Les’s Capital TV company in Thailand produced more than 1000 travel shows which have also been aired on cable TV in Thailand and throughout South East Asia. His YouTube channels also have more than 26,000 followers.

In Australia, Les has established Destination Productions and he has a load of ideas for more videos about Aussie motorcycling.

That has to be a bonus for riders starved of great online video content!

One of his upcoming videos is a fascinating look at a former racer who is returning to the sport to try to crack the lap record at Warwick’s Morgan Park track. We won’t give the ending away …

Meanwhile Living for the Ride also features a good library of SEA riding videos from his other channels, so there is plenty to get you excited about this YouTube channel.

Les hopes it may eventually turn into an Aussie TV show.

MX pros form Australian Motocross Group

Four of Australia’s most highly credentialed motocross industry professionals are joining forces to revitalise the Australian Motocross Championship.
MX legend Craig Dack from the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy team, Gavin Eales from Serco Motorsport and Yarrive Konsky from Penrite Honda Racing have partnered with longtime Honda team owner and former Motorcycling Australia Motocross Commission chairman, Mark Luksich, to form Australian Motocross Group (AMG).
They have more than 100 years of combined experience in racing, athlete management, marketing, sponsorship activation, event promotion and sport administration.
The group hopes to develop a stronger and closer connection with Motorcycling Australia, over changes and innovations to improve motocross and supercross in Australia.
AMG’s first goal is a rebirth of the Australian Motocross Championship.
The group welcome input from pro and privateer riders, race teams, manufacturers, promoting clubs and the motorcycle industry, giving all parties a channel of communication direct to the sport’s national controlling body.
Craig says the Australian Motocross Championship will break new ground with the inclusion of a representative group formally recognised by Motorcycling Australia.
“We want the sport to realise its full potential,” he says.
“We all have a vested interest in the sport’s future and I believe AMG has a significant place in the sport, as riders, racers and teams all need a voice.”
Longtime race team owner and state and national event promoter, Yarrive says the formation of the AMG is “the single most important development in our sport”
“AMG has come together with the right mindset, as racing rivalries have been put aside in order to improve the sport’s reach and increase participation,” he says.
“Everyone in AMG has raced as privateers and all of us have developed business interests in the sport, so it’s in our best interest to see the sport become even more accessible for privateers to participate in, with safety, fun and cost as key points.”
Gavin says the sport sport “needs unification to give it greater credibility within the industry, along with local, state and national governments and the wider mainstream community”.
“The four of us coming together to form AMG shows our commitment for a unified front,” he says.
“Commercially, the off-road motorcycle industry is doing well at the moment despite the challenges of COVID-19, and we need to leverage the current success we are experiencing and get more people competing in motocross.”
Meanwhile, Mark has returned to the MA Motocross Commission and will be the main point of contact for AMG.
“Having previously chaired MA’s Motocross Commission I can see the importance of having a group like AMG involved at the highest levels of the sport,” he says.
“AMG is dedicated to racing, riders and the teams, and by working closely with MA, we plan to bring our experience and passion to assist in making the sport a stronger platform for all involved.”

BSA rally comes to Crows Nest

The 16th BSA National Rally will be held in the officially declared Motorcycle Friendly Town of Crows Nest in South East Queensland this weekend (15-18 October 2020).

Despite the COVID border closures, the BSA Owners Club of Queensland still expects more than 60 members to show off their bikes.

There are four BSA branches Australia wide in South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland with national rallies held in turn. The last rally was held in SA with about 100 attendees.

The Queensland branch has been going for 17 years.

They are inviting motorcyclists to ride up the scenic Hampton Range on Saturday to see the free display of rare and expensive machinery at the rally headquarters in Crows Nest Tourist Park Qld from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

The oldest bike is likely from around 1915.

They are also hoping to see a 1953 Super flash BSA on display, likely to be one of the most valuable. The rarest BSA could well be the Speedway BSA.

Various rides are also planned, such as trips to The Oakey Army Museum, McCoys Café, Crows Nest Museum  and the Crows Nest Soft Drink Factory.

A big rally dinner is being held on the Saturday night.

Crows Nest was named Queensland’s second Motorcycle Friendly Town in 2017 and has become a motorcyclist Mecca with several motorbike events to be held in the town over the next two weeks and into next year.

The town has since a good social media presence, substantial motorcycle parking in the centre of town and handy brochures, videos and online resources to encourage more riders to the area.

Riders also have a helpful online tour guide resource for the region north of Toowoomba.

The town is only 90 minutes’ ride from Brisbane and about 2-3 hours from the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Highlights are fabulous roads, great scenery, bike friendly cafes, pubs, and accommodation.

For example, Crows Nest Tourist Park has 28 cabins and more than 150 powered and un-powered sites along with an onsite restaurant and café, The Curly Carrot.

The park is popular with motorcycle clubs as it has a club house catering for more than 150 people and a mini club house for 40.

Watch Tassie custom motorcycle film

Custom bikes and Tasmania’s scenery feature in a new 60-minute film called Wide of the Mark which the makers hope will be released on one of the streaming channels next year.

Filmmaker Jake Ashe says the film idea was to send six riders around Tasmania with road bikes that they’d custom-built into off-road bikes.

“We spent two weeks traversing around the rugged landscapes of Tasmania and essentially living off the backs of the bike, pushing them to the limit and taking them where they’re not meant to go” Jake says.

Film inspiration

The inspiration came from Jake and two friends creating a 50-minute motorcycle film last year called Handcrafted which they put out on YouTube for free.

“That was a trip down the east coast of Australia, and we dug into some of the garages and best custom bike builders in Australia,” he says.

“We wanted to keep the adventure going and we were really inspired to push the limits.”

This short film shows some of the more adventurous riding on Benders Track.

Jake says the trip was challenging.

“We were posed with all kinds of new and exciting opportunities and things we weren’t expecting,” he says.

“So many things went right, and we had so many amazing destinations. But a lot of things went wrong, too. It was really challenging in so many different ways.

“The name of the film, Wide of the Mark, comes from the idea of aiming for a point but essentially missing it, in a good way.”

Jake was the director of photography, cinematographer and editor. It was directed by his friend Cameron Grant and another friend, Tom Gilroy, was one of the main riders.

Five other riders were also involved.

The film was recorded just before the lockdown and the makers are now negotiating distribution.

High chair wheelie record attempt

A North of England man will attempt to set a new Guinness world record for a “high chair wheelie” sitting on the handlebars while doing a wheelie at 200km/h (124mph).

This outrageous event takes place this weekend (15-16 August 2020) at Elvington Airfield, North Yorkshire during the Motorcycle Wheelie World Championship.

The bike he will be using is a Suzuki GSX-R1000 K3 which is fully stock, performance wise.

However, he fitted a hand-operated rear brake, straight bars and an electronic gear shifter.

Jonny Davies aka ‘Stunter Jonny’ is a 28-year-old based in County Durham and is the current British and Scottish Stunt Champion.

To be successful, he needs to beat the current record of 108mph which was set by Irish man Enda Wright in 2006.

The high chair wheelie is one of many conventional and unusual record attempts on a range of machines at Elvington Airfield.

This is the first event run by Straightliners since COVID-19 lockdown began. They usually host about 40 events around the UK.

They have included speed records by a shed, a shopping trolley, toilets and more!

For the Motorcycle Wheelie World Championship participants need to achieve a kilometre wheel and the fastest over 210mph (337km/h) is the winner.

All runs are electronically timed under the auspices of the UK Timing Association (UKTA) with competitors receiving a personal performance print-out showing their times and speeds.

Drivers and riders will be entitled to a number of runs depending on how many people are taking part.

Runs take place on a first-come, first-served basis. COVID-19 social distancing rules will be applied.

Rally fundraiser to aid Sturgis senior citizens

Riders are being asked to help raise $US8000 for Meals on Wheels to service senior citizens who will be advised to home quarantine after the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.

The world’s biggest motorcycle rally from, this weekend until next weekend (8-16 August 2020) will also be the biggest mass gathering since the pandemic was declared six months ago.

Robert Pandya, a motorcycle industry veteran and founder of the GiveAShift initiative that initiated the fund drive, says “motorcyclists are incredibly generous”.

The fund-raising project should go some of the way to dispelling the image of riders flouting social distancing and risking the spread of the coronavirus through the community and taking it back home when they return after the nine-day rally.

Organisers expect about 250,000 to attend the rally which is half the usual crowd.

Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen says they have increased cleaning schedules and cancelled many group activities. Following the rally, a mass Covid-19 testing program will be held.

Michael Osterholm, head of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, says the rally could cause a major virus spread.

“Come mid-August to late August, early September, Sturgis will have one hell of an imprint on this country,” he says.

Senior citizensUSA America Sturgis Rushmore South Dakota rally

Meanwhile, the Sturgis Meals on Wheels (SMoW) program has already been stretched thin by the pandemic increasing need and reducing resources, says manager Jamie Helms.

“With the uncertainty of the world right now, our seniors depend on us just so that they don’t have to worry about leaving their homes where they feel safe,” he says.

“With our ageing population taking the city advice to quarantine for a couple of weeks after the rally, we are a needed service now more than ever, but we will get it done as we always do.”

Cash donations will be accepted under the blue tent at 1230 Lazelle St between 2-5pm from today (8 August) until next Saturday.

Click here for the official GoFundMe page for those who chose not to attend the event.

“We respect any riders who choose not to come to the event due to Covid, but encourage them to ‘donate a tank’ to thank and help the local seniors who have seen the rally become the most famous of its kind in the world,” Robert says.

“Supporting the Sturgis Meals on Wheels program is a natural fit for any biker and will have a hugely positive impact for local senior citizens.”
