Triumph recalls Trophy over brake issue

Triumph Australia has issued a recall over a potential brake failure in its 2013-2017 Trophy and Trophy SE models.

This brake recall is not linked to the forthcoming global recall over Brembo brakes.

This is a new issue involving incorrectly routed wires exiting the ignition switch may be damaged by contact with the front brake hose.

According to the official recall notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, “if the wires are damaged, motorcycle lighting may be lost unexpectedly or the engine may stall”.

This could increase the “risk of an accident or injury to the rider and other road users”.

Triumph Australia will attempt to advise Trophy owners to bring in their bikes for a free repair.

The vehicle identification numbers (VINs) of the 173 affected Trophy models are listed at the end of this article.

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle recalls as a service to all riders.

In Australia, recall notices are issued by the manufacturer and the Department of Infrastructure through a voluntary industry code under the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

While any recall is not good news for the manufacturer, it shows that they are largely diligent in fixing problems.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Brembo recall on host of models

A global recall on Italian Brembo brakes has the potential to affect a host of premium models just as two major Brembo recalls did in 2018.

The problem can cause a “catastrophic brake failure”, the notice says.

It has been caused by the use of too much nickel in the pads which can becoming porous, allowing moisture and humidity to corrode the pads.

The material can detach from the mounting plate of the brake pad causing “catastrophic brake failure”.

So far, the recall notice has only been issued in the US, but it is expected to be rolled out across the world to a host a models.

The first motorcycle company to acknowledge the problem is Triumph which in America is recalling 2018-2020 Street Triple R S, Speed Triple RS, and Tiger 1200 models.

It follows two major recalls for Brembo in 2018 which affected a host of model recalls.

In January 2018, Brembo issued a global safety recall on radial master cylinder pistons in 15mm and 16mm diameters produced between 2015 and 2017.

The recall affected thousands of motorcycles from manufacturers such as ApriliaDucati, Husqvarna, KTM MV Agusta,TM Racing, Moto Morini and Horex, but did not affect aftermarket units.

In August 2018, Brembo recalled some of its replacement aftermarket rear brake caliper kits.

The company supplies premium brake products to many motorcycle manufacturers and also dominates the aftermarket brake supplies market.

The only previous recall for a Brembo brake fault we could find was an ABS modular in Triumph Street Triple and Daytona models in 2013.

We will advise if or when an Australia product recall is issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

2014 Indians recalled over light failure

Indian Motorcycle Australia has recalled the 2014 Chief, Chief Vintage and Chieftain over a failure with the headlights cutting out.

The official recall notice, issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the electrical defect “may cause unexpected loss of forward lighting, including high and low beam headlights and fog lights”.

“If this occurs, the High Beam indicator will flash on the gauge cluster,” it says.

“If the motorcycle lighting malfunctions while in operation, it may reduce visibility and increase the risk of an accident or injury to the rider or other road users.”

Owners are urged to “avoid riding at night or in low light conditions until their motorcycle has been repaired”.

Light failure

That might not be an issue given the current ever-tightening restrictions on riding during the pandemic.

Riders are asked to contact their authorised Indian Motorcycle dealer to schedule an appointment to have the failure fixed, free of charge.

“Do not attempt repairs yourself,” the notice warns.

“Repairs must be done only by an authorised Indian Motorcycle dealer.”

For any questions or concerns, please contact the Indian Motorcycle Customer Service Department on 03 9394 5610 between 8.30am and 4.30pm EST Monday to Friday, excluding Victorian public holidays.

Moto Guzzi V85 TT scores two faults

Moto Guzzi Australia has recalled the V85 TT adventure model over two faults in the company’s first recall in more than 26 months.

The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the two faults concern the shaft drive seal and the footpegs.

It says the “rear drive oil seal may wear over time due to dust or other contamination” which is not ideal for an adventure bike.

“If the rear drive oil seal is damaged or worn, oil may leak onto the rear tyre and potentially cause loss of traction and/or control, increasing the risk of an accident or injury to the rider and other road users,” the notice says.Moto Guzzi V85 TT arrives colours two faults

In the other matter, the footpeg retaining pins may fall off along with the pegs.

“If the foot rest loosens or detaches, the rider may lose control of the motorcycle, increasing the risk of an accident or injury to the rider and other road users,” the notice says.

Owners are asked to contact their nearest authorised Moto Guzzi dealer to book in for an additional dust seal and an improved pin retainer.

The dealer will also perform a free seven-point function and diagnostic check.

The list of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) for the 74 affected bikes is attached to the end of this article.

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Avon Cobra motorcycle tyres recalled

Photograph of DOT image

Owners should contact the dealer where they bought the tyres to arrange a free inspection and replacement of affected tyres.

Recall rush

This is the fifth motorcycle-related product recall in the past 10 days.

The others involved Triumph Speed Triple S and R models, O’Neal helmets, Ducati Hypermotards and Harley trikes.

So far this year, there have been 26 motorcycle recalls plus four motorcycle product recalls: Harley saddlebags, a Honda Monkey bike rack, the helmet and these tyres.

That compares with last year’s 37 motorcycle recalls, the second highest number of recalls in the previous 10 years: 28 in 2017, 39 in 2016, 30 in 2015, 28 in 2014, 20 in 2013, 24 in 2012, 16 in 2011, 14 in 2010 and 23 in 2009.

The most recalls this year was six for Yamaha; followed by 4 for BMW, Ducati and Triumph; Harley, Honda, Suzuki and Triumph on three (if you count the aftermarket accessories for Harley and Honda); and one each for Avon tyres, Kawasaki, Indian, Piaggio, KTM and O’Neal helmets.

That compares with the previous year where Ducati had 6;  Indian, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, KTM and Triumph 3; BMW, Harley, Husqvarna and Moto Guzzi 2, Aprilia and MV Augusta one each. There were no other product recalls.

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.

Recall delays BMW S 1000 RR delivery

Riders who have ordered a new BMW S 1000 RR will have a bit of a wait as the company finds a fix for a recall over an oil leak before delivery.

We published the recall notice last month, but riders tell us they are still waiting on the delivery of bikes from Germany.

BMW Motorrad Australia Nick Raman confirms the delay in fulfilling orders.

Delivery delay

“BMW AG is in the final stages of testing the repair solution,” he says.

“Based on the successful conclusion of the tests and approval of the repair solution, parts will be produced and distributed to markets.

“Anticipated timing for the first parts to be available in Australia is late December 2019 to early January, 2020.”

The recall notice was over oil leaks from cracks in the rubber hose of the BMW S 1000 RR’s oil cooler.

The official notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the oil leak may spray on to the rear wheel of the motorcycle “increasing the risk of an accident or serious injury to the rider and other road users”.

Owners should contact an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer, or call the BMW Group Australia Customer Interaction Centre on freecall 1800 813 299 to arrange for inspection and replacement of the oil cooler, where required.

The recall on oil leaks affects 77 bikes, plus the delivery of an unknown number of bikes on order.

The full list of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) is included at the end of this article.

Consumers can also contact BMW Australia via the BMW Motorrad Australia Website.

Despite hundreds of recalls by various automotive manufacturers, only the Takata airbag recall has ever been mandatory.  All others have been issued by the manufacturer.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Honda recall on Grom rear rack

The official recall notice, issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says the rear rack may crack and fall off if overloaded.

It says it could possibly fall into the path of traffic or other road users “increasing the risk of an accident or injury”.

Owners should contact their nearest authorised Honda motorcycle dealer and arrange to have the rack removed. The purchase and installation cost of the rack will be refunded.

2017 Honda Grom stars eofy pace
Honda Grom

This is the third recall Honda has issued this year.

The others involved a locking rear wheel on learner-approved  2019 CBF300N, 2018 CBR300R and 2017 CRF250L models and CFR450L dual-sport bikes with the horn dropping off!

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

BMW recalls big tourers over locking wheel

BMW Motorrad Australia has recalled its big K 1600 touring fleet over a transmission issue which could result in a locking rear wheel.

If damage to the shift fork/selector sleeve/gearwheel occurs, gear changes may not be performed correctly. If gear changes cannot be performed correctly, two gears may be engaged at the same time.

Locking danger

The official notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission points out the dangers:

If damage to the shift fork/selector sleeve/gearwheel occurs, gear changes may not be performed correctly. If gear changes cannot be performed correctly, two gears may be engaged at the same time. If two gears are engaged at the same time, the rear wheel may lock and/or the teeth of the gearwheels shear off, depending on the road conditions and the speed of the vehicle, increasing the risk of an accident or serious injury to the vehicle’s passenger(s) or other road users.

Owners should contact an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer or call the BMW Group Australia Customer Interaction Centre on freecall 1800 813 299 to arrange for a free repair.

It’s the fourth recall for BMW this year and the third this month following the recent oil leak problem with the S 1000 RR and the Indian-made G 310 bikes and C 400 scooters over a problem with rusty brakes.

Despite hundreds of recalls by various automotive manufacturers, only the Takata airbag recall has ever been mandatory.  All others have been issued by the manufacturer.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Yamaha recall bikes over missing sticker

Yamaha Motor Australia has recalled 1193 MT-07 and XSR700 models for a missing exhaust noise compliance sticker.

The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says correct Stationary Noise Data labels were not fitted to these motorcycles in production.

It is a requirement of the Australian Design Rule ADR 83 for the sticker to be attached to each motorcycle.

Riders risk being fined by police for non-compliance.

Obviously, you could successfully fight such a fine, but it would be an inconvenience.

Easy fix

Owners have been advised to “immediately contact their local Yamaha Dealer and arrange to have the label attached at no charge”.

In the meantime, we suggest you keep a copy of this article on hand to show to police if they intend to issue a notice.

Click here to see a complete list of vehicle identification numbers for the 1193 affected bikes.

Consumers can find their nearest authorised Yamaha dealership by clicking here.

The MT-907 and XSR700 were also recalled last year for loose chain protector bolts.

Missing stickers

It is not the first time motorcycles have been recalled for a missing noise sticker.

In 2016, Braaap motorcycles were recalled over the sticker issue and last year several Triumph models were recalled for the missing noise sticker.

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle recalls as a service to all riders.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Yamaha recalls over leaks and gears

Yamaha Motor Australia has issued two recalls for their R3 and a recall for their MT-03 (above) for issues such as radiator leaks and gear shift problems.

In the radiator recall, some 4408 YZF-R3A bikes made from 2015-2018 have “insufficient hose material curing at manufacturing” that may lead to cracking in the radiator coolant hose.

The official notice, issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, says the cracking may result in coolant leakage.

“This increases the risk of accident and may cause serious injury to the rider and other road users,” it says.

Click here for the Vehicle Identification Numbers of affected bikes.

The gear-shift recall affects 2380 YZF-R3A (2015-16) and 534 MT-03LA (2016) bikes.

“Due to a defective shift mechanism torsion spring, riders may not be able to select the desired gear,” the notice says.

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.
