Kahro emerges as surprise contender in MX Nationals debut

Estonian captures moto victory on the way to third overall at Wonthaggi.

Erki Kahro emerged as a surprise contender at Wonthaggi’s second round of the 2019 Pirelli MX Nationals, with the visiting European landing on the MX1 podium while making his debut in the series.

At 25 years of age and hailing from Estonia, Kahro made a stunning appearance in the opening moto, controlling the final stages of the 17-lap affair before being overcome by Luke Clout (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy) with just a matter of corners of left, however a penalty for Clout ultimately granted Kahro the win.

Piloting a KTM 450 SX-F, the privateer put on another charge in the challenging conditions for race two, rebounding from an earlier mistake to finish in sixth, crediting him the final spot on the podium alongside new points leader Hayden Mellross (Raceline KTM Thor) and overall victor Clout.

“I am really happy, it still hasn’t sunk in yet,” Kahro told MotoOnline.com.au. “It’s just unreal – I came over here because I was really struggling with getting a bike and everything in Europe, my friends organised a bike here and it’s just a nice privateer effort.

“I really enjoyed it, and it’s all about fun – there’s no pressure from my friends, and I just happened to do well. I’ve been putting in the work during the [European] winter, and it’s just paid off right now. I think the pace was a little slower in the first moto with the mud, ruts and everything, but that suited me better, because in Europe we have a little bit deeper sand that is slower.

“Here it’s as rough or a little less, but it’s a faster pace. So the second moto I found it really fast-paced, and there’s nowhere like that where I train in Belgium, which is really slow-paced tracks that are really rough. I found that hard in the second moto and fought a little with my bike set-up – I didn’t get it right in the second moto.”

Kahro is set to line-up at Broadford’s third round in Victoria on 14 April, however his plans beyond that are yet to be determined.

Bopping expresses interest in extended MX Nationals return

Image: Foremost Media.

Popular New South Welshman Lawson Bopping has expressed his interest in continuing in the 2019 Pirelli MX Nationals following a convincing come-back at Wonthaggi yesterday for round two of the series in Victoria.

Filling in for inured talent Dylan Long at Empire Kawasaki, Bopping stunned the field when he led majority of race one before settling for fifth, bouncing back in moto two with a P10 result, granting him fifth overall.

Bopping’s surprise call up for Wonthaggi saw him enter his first outdoor race in three years, with a mystery illness ultimately denying him of pursuing the motocross championship full-time in recent seasons.

With the return of Long still uncertain, the number 70 of Bopping is all-in on piloting the KX450 for as long as required, his performance on Sunday offering added motivation to return to the national circuit.

“For sure, I’d love to,” Bopping answered when MotoOnline.com.au asked if Wonthaggi sparked his interest in returning to the MX Nationals in an extended capacity. “I don’t know what’s going to happen because this is just a one-off race type deal for now, I’ll talk to Tyson [Cherry] this week and see what he wants to do, and see what Longy’s plans are.

“I don’t know how his elbow is going – it’s a shame for him, but I’ll ride their bike for as long as they want to give it to me. I’m onboard – I’ll get some more motos under my belt – surely I’ll be better than that. I can go faster than that as well, so it was a great weekend – it probably doesn’t look great on paper, but I had a lot of fun and it was great to lead some laps.”

Bopping returned to competition last year in the Australian Supercross Championship, joining the series from the second round initially as a privateer aboard Kawasaki equipment before landing a guest ride with CDR Yamaha Monster Energy at the season-finale in Sydney.

The next stop on the MX Nationals calendar is scheduled for 14 April at Broadford in Victoria, with a double-header set to take place in Murray Bridge, South Australia, on 4-5 May.

Gardner charged with emotion after career-first Moto2 podium

Argentina runner-up promotes Australian to second in world championship.

Remy Gardner is charged with emotion after earning an incredible career-first grand prix podium in the Moto2 category at Argentina’s second round on Sunday.

The Australian put on an exceptional display, leading portions of the 23-lap encounter before racing home to a rewarding runner-up place result.

Gardner, who has found exceptional form since transitioning to the ONEXOX TKKR SAG Racing Team this year along with the new-era Triumph-powered engine, says he no words after putting in the ride of his career at the Termas de Rio Hondo venue.

“You have no idea how long I have been waiting for this,” Gardner expressed. “I could’ve won it but Balda touched me and I got a bit out of shape on the brakes. I did it to the other guys so I’m not going to complain like a little girl, but I should have given him a bit more room and been a bit smarter with that tactic.

“I never gave up – every time someone passed me, I was like no, I want this, and after losing out in Qatar by two hundredths when I saw Schrotter in front of me I thought, it’s not happening this time and so I just pulled my finger out and gave it everything.

“I have no words, I am a bit emotional. Massive thanks to the team, they have believed in me from the start and to everyone who has been sending tweets and messages on Facebook, thank you.”

Son of former motorcycle grand prix world champion Wayne Gardner, the youthful talent now sits second in the Moto2 World Championship standings.

Dominant Cairoli triumphs Valkenswaard MXGP

Nine-time world champion Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) has dominated Valkenswaard’s third round of the 2019 MXGP World Championship in The Netherlands, boosting his points lead in the series classification.

The Italian ace pieced together a stellar 1-1 scorecard for top honours, comfortably defeating runner-up Clement Desalle (Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing) in the day’s overall points tally.

Former champion Tim Gajser (Honda HRC) was third overall, challenging Cairoli for victory in the final encounter, while the top five was rounded out by Jeremy van Horebeek (Honda SR Motoblouz) and Arminas Jasikonis (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing).

In the MX2 category, reigning world champion Jorge Prado returned from a shoulder injury that ruled him out of round two in exceptional fashion, dominating the day with a pair moto victories to earn the overall win.

Points leader Thomas Kjer Olsen (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) was second ahead of Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Jago Geerts, while Calvin Vlaanderen (Honda HRC) and Henri Jacobi (F&H Kawasaki) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Australian contenders Jed Beaton (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) and Mitch Evans (Team Honda 114 Motorsports) wound up 12th and 15th overall.

The Dutch grand prix also marked round on the Women’s Motocross World Championship, which saw Amandine Verstappen (Yamaha) emerge victorious over Nancy Van de Ven (Yamaha) and Larissa Papenmeier (MXFONTA Racing Yamaha). Aussies Meghan Rutledge (Kawasaki) and Tahlia O’Hare (KTM) were eighth and 13th overall respectively.

The MXGP World Championship now heads to Trentino in Italy this weekend for round four of the series.

Marquez wins Argentina GP as Gardner earns maiden Moto2 podium

Image: Supplied.

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) obliterated the opposition on Sunday at Argentina’s second round of the 2019 MotoGP World Championship to take victory by over nine seconds, the reigning world champion beating Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati).

Marquez got an unthreatened hole-shot after a blinder of a start with second place Maverick Vinales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) getting bogged down, allowing Dovizioso, Rossi and Australia’s Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) to get by the Spaniard.

With Marquez holding position off the line, it was a case of head and hammer down for the number 93 as he bolted to a one second lead on lap one, with that gap increasing to 2.4s after lap two as it soon became a race for second.

That race for second was fierce though as Dovizioso, Rossi, Miller, Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) and Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) scrapped it out. But it was soon rostrum challenge over the Crutchlow as Race Direction gave him a ride through penalty for jumping the start – no repeat win or podium for last season’s Argentina GP victor.

Back at the front and on lap eight Marquez’ lead was stretched to five seconds as six riders all had their sights set on second, with Danilo Petrucci (Mission Winnow Ducati) and Vinales joining the fray. Rossi eventually got the better of Dovi on lap nine after running in hot at turn five on lap eight after overtaking his compatriot, but the Ducati rider locked himself onto Rossi’s M1 tailpipes as the Italians locked horns in Termas.

It was ‘The Doctor’ who held the P2 baton at the halfway point, eight seconds from Marquez, with Dovizioso, Morbidelli, Petrucci, Miller and Vinales in tandem, with Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Alex Rins creeping up to the rear of Vinales after making up ground from P16 on the grid, firmly tagging himself onto the back of the podium hunt with 10 to go.

Vinales then ran wide at turn five as he dropped behind eight place’s Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu). With nine to go, a Noah’s Ark formation appeared as second to seventh were two-by-two, roughly half a second between the pairings. Dovi and Rossi locked together, Morbidelli and Petrucci interchanging for fourth with Rins and Miller engaged in battle.

Morbidelli soon found himself down in seventh though, Rins and Miller getting the better of him. Meanwhile, Marquez’ gap had opened up to 12 seconds. The group had closed back up again but with five laps remaining, Dovi and Rossi were edging out an advantage over the chasing pack, with Petrucci, Rins and Miller squabbling for fourth place. Both Rins and Miller getting the better of Petrucci at turn five with three to go.

Heading into the last lap it was Dovi leading Rossi. Both were clear of fourth, but which step of the podium would they be standing on? Dovizioso was able to keep second as the Yamaha had no match for the Ducati grunt down the straight, but ‘The Doctor’ sliced his way through on his countryman at turn seven.

A long way up the road, Marquez cruised round to take his first win of the season in scintillating fashion. A Marquez masterclass in Termas, with Rossi earning his first podium since the 2018 German GP. Dovi came home third, achieving his pre-race aims of a podium finish to head to Austin four points behind Marquez in the Championship.

Just behind, there was drama for two Yamahas on the last lap. Morbidelli tagging the back of Vinales at turn seven, the duo going down and out of contention. This left Miller holding fourth to repeat his 2018 Argentina GP result, with Rins climbing 11 positions from his P16 starting slot to earn fifth place. Petrucci takes away a second consecutive sixth of the season.

Nakagami makes it two top 10s from two in 2019 to come home seventh, with first of the rookies Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) picking up his first points of the year with a solid P8. The Espargaro brothers completed the top 10, Aprilia Racing Team Gresini’s Aleix heading Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pol by 0.3. Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) produced an incredibly impressive ride on his second premier class start to finish just 0.176s behind the factory KTM.

Jorge Lorenzo (Repsol Honda Team), a recovering Crutchlow, Francesco Bagnaia (Pramac Racing) and Johann Zarco (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) completed the points in Argentina.

In Moto2, Flexbox HP 40’s Lorenzo Baldassarri continued his perfect start to year a calculated ride to claim victory. The Italian eventually took the chequered flag over a second clear of Australian Remy Gardner (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team), who stood on the podium for the first time in his career.

The result comes almost 27 years on from dad Wayne’s last podium at the 1992 South African grand prix. American Racing KTM’s Iker Lecuona took fourth place ahead of Marcel Schrotter (Dynavolt Intact GP).

Jaume Masia (Bester Capital Dubai) won his first ever Moto3 race after taking a sensational victory in Argentina, the Spaniard holding off Darryn Binder (CIP Green Power) and maiden podium position finisher Tony Arbolino (VNE Snipers) as the lightweight class treated us to yet another unbelievable race long scrap. Niccolo Antonelli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) and Ayumu Sasaki (Petronas Sprinta Racing) locked out the top five.

The MotoGP World Championship now heads to Circuit of the Americas on 14 April for round three of the series.

More confusion over lane splitting and filtering

If you think Australian road rules and lane filtering rules vary substantially between states, how about the USA where the only two states with lane splitting have completely different rules!

California has now been joined by Utah which has recently legalised lane splitting, while several more states are considering lane-splitting rules.

Lane splitting

It’s called lane splitting in the USA and lane filtering in Australia.

While lane filtering is slow movement between lanes of traffic, lane splitting is usually performed at higher speeds as in California.

However, the new Utah rules are actually lane filtering as it is only permitted in stationary traffic on a road posted at no higher than 45mph (72km/h) and at a maximum speed of 15mph (24km/h).

That’s even more restrictive than Australia where traffic does not have to be stopped and the maximum speed is 30km/h.

However, each Australian state has variances in the rules such as whether you can filtering through school zones, on the road edge or next to trucks and buses.

Rules Lane filter splitting filtering
Rules vary across Aussie states

The most liberal rules are in California where it is allowed when traffic is travelling under 30mph (48km/h) and riders must travel no faster than 10mph (16km/h) more than surrounding traffic.

America divided

Several other American states are also considering lane filtering/splitting bills with varied rules.

Some are considering allowing riders to use the road shoulder only and not between lanes of traffic, while others have varied maximum speeds for riders and surrounding traffic.

In Texas, where you can ride without a helmet under certain conditions, they are considering making it mandatory when splitting lanes.Lane filtering lane splitting

Is it any wonder riders become confused and inadvertently break some of these arcane rules when travelling from state to state?

So if someone tells you it is legal to lane filter or lane split in their state or country, find out the rules first or you could run foul of the law.

Points leader Mellross shakes supercross specialist title

Image: Foremost Media.

Considered a supercross specialist by many, Hayden Mellross has shaken the title by earning the premier class championship lead after landing on the podium today at Wonthaggi’s second round of the 2019 Pirelli MX Nationals.

The Raceline KTM Thor talent promoted himself to the premier class in his return season to the MX Nationals this year, his first full outdoor campaign since 2014 following a number of years contesting the AMA Supercross series.

Finishing second at Appin’s mud-filled season-opener two weeks ago, Mellross was eager to prove his podium result wasn’t by chance, blitzing Wonthaggi’s challenging conditions with a supremely consistent 3-3 scorecard for runner-up honours, and most importantly, being granted the red-plate.

“I always feel like I’m out there to win, but the way my career has panned out, I’ve been predominately a supercross rider -that’s just the way my career has gone,” Mellross explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “Having the opportunity to race here in the MX Nationals with a great team is awesome.

“Leading into Appin I thought I was going to be a strong contender, but I guess from articles and podcasts, I was flying under the radar – a lot of people didn’t know what to expect out of me. With Appin being a mudder, I think they were pointing fingers a little – ‘it was a mudder, it was a fluke’.

“I felt a little gutted, and if anything, it motivated me in the last couple of weeks. We came here with one goal, and we succeeded – that was to have the red-plate and the championship lead. There are still eight rounds, it’s a long season and half of these tracks are quite new to me compared to some other guys.”

The New South Welshman came within moments of securing a career-first overall victory in the division today, however a mistake in the dying stages of moto two while hunting down leader Todd Waters (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna) ultimately denied him of the opportunity.

“I saw we were at the halfway point from my mechanic, so I threw the hammer down, tried to switch it up, make the pass on Clout and was then all over Waters,” he added. “I guess I was trying to put a lot of things to rest from over the last couple of weeks, and I guess get a little redemption.

“I was trying hard and pushing, but I made mistake, crashed, got back up and finished third for second overall. Now I have the red-plate – I’ve never had the red-plate before in the MX1 class, so it’s unbelievable. My team has never had never had the red-plate in the MX1 class, so to reward them is unbelievable.”

Former points leader Waters suffered a mechanical DNF in the opening moto, relinquishing the red-plate, and bounced back in the moto two to claim the win.

Webb strengthens points lead with Houston Triple Crown win

Ferrandis scores second consecutive 250SX West victory.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Cooper Webb has strengthened his points lead at Houston’s 13th round of the 2019 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, marking the third Triple Crown of the season.

Webb lodged a supremely consistent 2-1-3 scorecard to earn the overall win, defeating teammate Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing), who scored his first podium of the season.

Fourth and fifth were awarded Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) and Cole Seely (Team Honda HRC), while race one winner Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) wound up 10th overall after suffering a heavy fall at the beginning of race two, forcing him out of the encounter before returning in the final outing.

In the 250SX West division, Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Yamalube Yamaha Star Racing) notched up his second consecutive victory with a 2-1-2 scorecard. RJ Hampshire (Geico Honda) was runner-up ahead of Colt Nichols (Monster Energy Yamalube Yamaha Star Racing).

Clout overcomes Wonthaggi penalties to earn maiden MX1 victory

Image: Foremost Media.

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Luke Clout has overcome penalties in both motos to earn his maiden premier class overall victory at Wonthaggi’s second round of the 2019 Pirelli MX Nationals in Victoria.

The second moto saw KSF Racing Suzuki’s Justin Rodbell hit the lead, however he was quickly overtaken by Todd Waters (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna), who rebounded phenomenally to take out a dominant race win after suffering a mechanical DNF in race one.

Clout and Hayden Mellross (Raceline KTM Thor) both offered Waters a challenge at the halfway mark, with Mellross making his way by Clout in the closing stages. It all came undone for the KTM pilot, crashing violently when negotiating a high-speed turn, allowing Clout to regain second and build a comfortable advantage that extended beyond his 20-second in race penalty.

Mellross remounted for third, and was followed by Rodbell and Jayden Rykers (KSF Racing Suzuki). The top 10 was rounded out by race one winner Erki Kahro (KTM), Kirk Gibbs (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy), Jesse Dobson (Husqvarna), Charlie Creech (Husqvarna) and Lawson Bopping (Empire Kawasaki). Overall, Clout was victorious ahead of Mellross – who now takes over as points leader – and visiting Estonian Kahro.

In MX2, reigning champion Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna) earned his first overall victory of the season in dominant fashion, storming the wins in the opening two Sprint races before putting on a commanding display in this afternoon’s final encounter.

Remaining supremely consistent in the tough conditions, number one plated Todd emerged with a comfortable 10.825s win over Penrite Pirelli CRF Honda Racing’s Kyle Webster, as 2015 champion Jay Wilson (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) completed the podium.

Aaron Tanti (Serco Yamaha) and Jy Roberts (Raceline KTM Thor) were fourth and fifth respectively, followed by Dylan Wills (Davey Motorsports KTM), Jy Dickson (KTM), Nathan Crawford (Serco Yamaha), Sam Pelz (Husqvarna) and Issac Ferguson (KTM). Todd secured the overall and now the points lead, and was joined on the podium by Tanti and Roberts.

The MXD category also saw a dominant performance, this time by class rookie and Western Australian Regan Duffy (Raceline KTM Thor). The youthful talent pulled together a pair of race wins to earn his maiden victory in the category.

In race two, he fended off a charge from round one winner Maximus Purvis (Bulk Nutrients WBR Yamaha), ultimately crossing the line with a 10.356s advantage. Mason Rowe (KTM) was third ahead of Rhys Budd (Penrite Pirelli CRF Honda Racing) and Noah Ferguson (Davey Motorsports KTM). On the podium it was Duffy from Rowe and Budd.

The 125cc Gold Cup was taken out by Cameron Taylor (Yamaha), followed by Joshua Kilvington (KTM) and Nicholas Murray (Yamaha). The next stop on the MX Nationals calendar is scheduled for 14 April at Broadford in Victoria.

Damaged subframe forces Waters into early moto one retirement

Image: Foremost Media.

A damaged subframe sustained in a crash down the start straight is what ultimately forced former points leader Todd Waters to make an early retirement in moto one of Wonthaggi’s Pirelli MX Nationals.

The DPH Motorsport Husqvarna talent collided with another rider as the premier class headed into turn one, resulting in the number 47 crashing heavily before his bike was severely damaged by another incoming contender.

The damage to subframe, which is made of a composite construction and comes standard on the Husqvarna, was deemed too serious for Waters to continue, prompting him to relinquish the points lead.

“Basically, someone collided with Todd on the start straight and he crashed,” DPH Motorsport Husqvarna’s Boyd Hocking explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “I believe someone crashed into the back of him, which broke the subframe. From there, it was all over unfortunately.

“When the subframe is damaged on the Husqvarna, you can’t continue with it being a composite subframe. The bike is back together now – Todd knows what he has to do and he’s got a good head on his shoulders. We’ll be fine and hopefully get some good points for a bad day.”

Visiting Estonian Erki Kahro (KTM) stunned the competition by claiming victory in MX1 race one at Wonthaggi, benefiting from a 10-second penalty handed down to Luke Clout (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy).
