Qualifying position compromised Rea in Assen encounter

Double podium for Kawasaki Racing Team contender.

Four-time defending champion Jonathan Rea is adamant his qualifying position compromised his campaign during Sunday’s fourth round of the 2019 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) at Assen in The Netherlands.

The Kawasaki Racing Team pilot qualified eighth after the session was cancelled prematurely due to weather conditions, which saw race one delayed to Sunday while prompting the Superpole race to also be cancelled.

Forcing him to come from behind, Rea eventually mustered up a 2-3 scorecard, leading a number of laps in race two before falling shy of second by a mere 0.018s.

“I feel like qualifying really compromised my race,” said Rea. “Coming from eighth I had to spend a lot of energy and also tyre trying to come through [in race one]. When I got a free track, the gap with Alvaro was quite constant, but he kept going. His pace was relentless right to the end – congratulations to him.

“My team and I put so much effort into the weekend, so I can’t say that we are disappointed for missing the second position. They gave me a great bike, and I got the full potential! Unfortunately, we just decided to go with a harder tyre again. For me, it was working good, and I was going really fast, but in the last few laps, I ran out of grip.

“Van der Mark could pass me on the faster section. The grip was just a little bit better, but I didn’t want to make a mistake. We touched at turn 10, and luckily we both stayed upright.”

Rea holds down second in the championship standings, 53 points adrift of undefeated points Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati).

Third annual WR250R Rally hosts record turnout

Yamaha adventure ride takes place in New South Wales.

Image: Supplied.

A record number of Yamaha WR250Rs turned out for the third annual rally last month, where 62 owners of the tough adventure bike converged in Cessnock, New South Wales, for the two day ride.

Riders congregated at Chris Watsons Motorcycles for a pre-ride BBQ and briefing, with participants coming from as far away as Alice Springs, as well as two travelling from the USA to hire bikes from RideADV organisers.

Trails were varied from wet and muddy, to dry and dusty, and from beautiful lush green forests with red clay surfaces to dry and rocky ride areas around Yengo, Watagan, Corrabare, Werakata, Heaton, Sugarloaf, Pokolbin and Wollombi Forests.

“This was another awesome event for owners of the cult classic adventure bike,” said RideADV’s Greg Yager. “The weather produced some challenging conditions but once again there were few dramas and heaps of happy punters. We’re claiming this as the largest ever gathering of WR250Rs in one place. If anyone knows different, please get in touch with us.”

The WR250R Rally continues to grow as adventure riders tune into the fun of covering big distances on the small yet surprisingly capable motorcycle – and next year’s event is set to smash the current WR250R rider world record.

Marquez admits to mistake that ended COTA dominance

Marquez admits to mistake that ended COTA dominance

Repsol Honda pilot crashes out of contention at round three.

Image: Supplied.

Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez says he made a big mistake at Circuit of the Americas on Sunday that ultimately ended his six-year winning streak at the venue.

Marquez had won all six grand prix at the American circuit in the lead up to the weekend’s event, earning his maiden premier class victory there in 2013.

Qualifying on pole for the seventh-consecutive season, the Repsol Honda rider made a rare error on lap nine while leading, losing his front-end at turn 12 and forcing him into an early retirement.

“We have had six amazing years here but today I made a big mistake,” Marquez admitted. “When I arrived in the garage I said sorry to the team and now I’d like to say sorry to the fans because it was my mistake. It’s different to make a mistake fighting for fifth and fighting for the win, the level is there.

“We’re only nine points off the lead. It’s true, we made a mistake but we are human and this can happen. We need to learn from it and understand and come back stronger in Jerez.”

The Spaniard holds down second in the championship standings behind Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati) as the series heads to Jerez in Spain on 5 May.

Wilson discovers desired feeling in Broadford outing

Yamaha pilot completes MX2 podium despite battling finger injury.

Image: Foremost Media.

Former MX2 champion Jay Wilson has described his outing at Broadford’s third round of the 2019 Pirelli MX Nationals as the best he’s felt this season.

The Yamalube Yamaha Racing ace, who battled a finger injury that required surgery two weeks prior to the weekend’s encounter, overcame a difficult race one to put in an inspiring moto two charge, claiming third for third overall.

Lacking seat time since undergoing surgery, Wilson is relieved to keep his championship hopes alive by maintaining second in the points rankings.

“Today was the best I have felt on the bike in motocross so far this year,” Wilson stated. “The first race I was covered in mud and just did what I had to do to get back to fifth as the first four were long gone, but in the second moto I really began to gel with the bike and attack the track. I felt awesome and just wished it was the 30-minute race and not the 20.

“So I’m happy with today and happy to come out with some good points. It wasn’t looking real good after Wonthaggi but thanks to the team Racesafe we were able get on track and keep the championship alive.”

Reigning champion and points leader Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna) dominated the round, extending his points advantage to 28 as the MX Nationals heads to Murray Bridge in South Australia next month for the first double-header of the season.

Our condolences to the family and friends of the young rider who died and out best wishes to the other for a seedy recovery.

It brings to 22 the number of riders who have died in Victoria so far this year, double the number over the same time last year.

Last month, Victorian Police added 300 hours of extra shifts to patrol the state’s roads after a spate of road fatalities.

No doubt police in Victoria, as well as other states, will be out in force over the Easter break.

In NSW, police are referring to their Easter operation as “Operation Tortoise”.

Double demerit

Double demerit points will apply in NSW, ACT and Western Australia from tomorrow and will return for the Anzac Day public holidays.

There is no double demerit system in Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, Northern Territory and South Australia.

If you are a rider from those states passing through those states and the ACT, double points will not apply.

However, Queensland riders should note that double points do apply to speeding offences of 21km/h or greater over the speed limit and seatbelt offences if they occur more than once within a 12 month period.

Gardner ‘pushing like a maniac’ in COTA recovery

Gardner ‘pushing like a maniac’ in COTA recovery

Australian Moto2 challenger salvages 11th in America.

Image: Supplied.

Remy Gardner admits he destroyed his tyres at Circuit of the Americas last weekend by ‘pushing like a maniac’ to recover from lost time at the beginning of the Moto2 World Championship encounter.

The SAG Racing Team contender, who scored a career-first grand prix podium at the previous round, started from 18th on the grid, however an early incident pushed the Australian wide, forcing him to relinquish a number of positions while making for an increasingly difficult outing in Texas.

The youthful talent put in a spirited ride to cross the line in P11, allowing him to retain a top five placing in the championship standings following the first three rounds.

“It was a tough weekend,” Gardner declared. “A crash in qualifying didn’t help us out and unfortunately I made a good start but Balda’s crash sent me really wide and I almost went down. I lost a lot of time and then destroyed my tyres, pushing like a maniac to recover.

“After that it was a case of bringing the bike home and in the end we got some valuable points and kept a top five position overall in the championship. I’m looking forward to the European races and am heading to Jerez with a clear mind.”

The Moto2 World Championship now heads to Jerez in Spain on 5 May for round four of the 19-stop tour.

CONSTRUCTION:

Technical microfiber upper construction offering superb levels of flexibility, while the lightweight rubber compound sole offers excellent grip and feel and allows for natural flex as the rider changes position and pressure on the foot-peg.

PROTECTION:

Newly designed external TPU shin protection is ergonomically shaped and wraps around to outer calf and is engineered to spread and dissipate impact energy across the entire surface while remaining compact, while the replaceable polymer heel plate slider protects from impact and reduces friction in the event of a crash.

INNER ANKLE BRACE SYSTEM:

Separate internal bio-mechanical ankle brace works with the outer structure of the boot to form a protective system allowing full and free movement of the foot, ankle and leg. New research has produced re-profiled double-hinged inner and outer torsion bars to give greater impact protection to the ankle by progressively absorbing flex and rotation stress, reducing pressure and hyper-extension injury to the lower leg joints.
