Shoulder concern for Gibbs following moto two non-finish

A DNF registered in this afternoon’s second MX1 moto at Murray Bridge was a costly one for South Australian Kirk Gibbs in a disastrous end to round four.

Gibbs scored second behind the rider he replaced at CDR Yamaha Monster Energy, Dean Ferris, in the opening encounter, but a pair of crashes in moto two saw him exit prematurely.

According to CDR team owner Craig Dack, the second incident while working his way back through the field eventually resulted in Gibbs pulling out of the moto with extensive shoulder pain. He’s since been hospitalised in Adelaide for scans on the suspected injury.

“He’s taken himself to the Adelaide hospital to get X-rays and scans on his shoulder,” Dack revealed to MotoOnline.com.au. “Until we get scans and X-rays, we don’t know. He had to pull out of that race because of the pain.

“Basically, he was coming up on some riders who tangled in front of him, and he landed where they crashed, went over the bars and landed on his shoulder. He was jumping and had nowhere to go. He had some numbness in his arm and quite a bit of pain – it’s not looking good, but we don’t know what the answer is yet.”

With the extent of damage yet to be determined, today’s DNF marks a severe blow in the title race for Gibbs, who closed to within three points of current red plate-holder Hayden Mellross – third overall on Saturday – following this morning’s opening encounter.

Saturday MX1 clean-sweep for Ferris in South Australia

Saturday MX1 clean-sweep for Ferris in South Australia

MX Nationals MX2 win belongs to Webster and MXD overall to Purvis.

Image: Foremost Media.

Number one plate-holder Dean Ferris was unstoppable in Thor MX1 moto two on Saturday at Murray Bridge, round four of the 2019 Pirelli MX Nationals.

In what is – for now – a single appearance with Recover8 backing aboard KTM machinery, Ferris marched to a brilliant 1-1 scorecard to assert his familiar dominance.

Moto two of the premier class was a more interesting outing though, with Ferris coming under constant pressure from Raceline Superpole winner Luke Clout (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy), who eventually finished second, 3.573s in arrears.

Championship leader Hayden Mellross (Raceline KTM Thor) was directly behind the front pair in third position, stretching away from Todd Waters (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna), while Jayden Rykers (Suzuki) was once again impressive in fifth.

American import Justin Rodbell put in an inspired effort for KSF Suzuki to take sixth, ahead of Richie Evans (Yamalube Yamaha Racing), Erki Kahro (KTM), Dylan Long (Empire Kawasaki) and Brett Metcalfe (Penrite Honda Racing). The round belonged to Ferris from Clout and Mellross.

Major news coming out of moto two was an incident for CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Kirk Gibbs on lap three while challenging toward the front, eventually forcing him out of the moto altogether in the latter stages.

Image: Foremost Media.

In Pirelli MX2 moto three this afternoon it was defending champion Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna) who rebounded will a pivotal victory, 1.278s clear of the consistent Jay Wilson (Yamalube Yamaha Racing).

Todd’s win boosted him onto the overall podium in third position, however, it was P3 in this encounter that sealed sprint races winner Kyle Webster (Penrite CRF Honda Racing) the round. Wilson and Todd filled the rostrum.

Moto three was a strong one for Dylan Wills (Davey Motorsports KTM) despite a recent knee injury, ahead of Riley Dukes (Husqvarna) with a fifth-place result.

Positions six through 10 featured Nathan Crawford (Serco Yamaha), Bailey Malkiewicz (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna), Kaleb Barham (Husqvarna), Jai Constantinou (Honda) and Morgan Fogarty (Davey Motorsports KTM).

Image: Foremost Media.

The second Motul MXD moto was captured by red plate-holder Regan Duffy (Raceline KTM Thor), however it was a runner-up finish for Maximus Purvis (WBR Yamaha) that earned him the overall today.

Duffy was at his best to lead the field by 5.044s ahead of Purvis, while in third position it was Rhys Budd (Penrite CRF Honda Racing) who completed the race podium in third, with Mason Semmens (Davey Motorsports KTM) fourth and Jack Kukas (WBR Yamaha) fifth. Overall it was Purvis from Duffy and Budd.

Round five of the 2019 Pirelli MX Nationals will take place at Murray Bridge on Sunday, 5 May, in the first double-header weekend of the season prior to the annual mid-season break.

More to follow including round results.

KTM-mounted Ferris dominates Murray Bridge moto one on return

KTM-mounted Ferris dominates Murray Bridge moto one on return

Webster opens MX2 on top as Purvis wins MXD to begin MX Nationals double-header.

Image: Foremost Media.

Recover8 KTM rider Dean Ferris made a convincing return to the 2019 Pirelli MX Nationals in moto one at Murray Bridge, dominating the series regulars on his way to victory.

Ferris, who qualified third in Raceline Super Pole, led from the outset to eventually cross the line 13.226s ahead of Kirk Gibbs (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy) in the Thor MX1 opener.

Any doubts that Ferris was lacking preparation while looking to secure a ride in the US were discounted, appearing as competitive as he was in his three-year title run between 2016 and 2018.

South Australia’s Gibbs, meanwhile, put in a solid performance, comfortably ahead of Jayden Rykers (Suzuki) who had his best ride of the year since stepping up to the premier class. The top five was filled by Hayden Mellross (Raceline KTM Thor) and top qualifier Luke Clout (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy), who went down early.

Sixth was Todd Waters (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna), followed by Richie Evans (Yamalube Yamaha Racing), Lawson Bopping (Empire Kawasaki), Justin Rodbell (KSF Racing Suzuki) and the returning Dylan Long (Empire Kawasaki), completing the top 10.

Image: Foremost Media.

The back-to-back Pirelli MX2 sprint races were each won by Penrite CRF Honda Racing’s Kyle Webster.

He topped the first outing ahead of Jay Wilson (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) and newcomer Bailey Malkiewicz (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna), then the second over Wilson and Kaleb Barham (Husqvarna).

Collectively, it was Webster who scored top points for the moto victory ahead of Wilson and Barham. Current points-leader and defending champion Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna) scored fifth-place results in both sprint races.

In the Motul MXD division it was WBR Yamaha rider Maximus Purvis who rode to the moto one win, 6.161s in front of Brodie Ellis (Yamaha).

Red plate-holder Regan Duffy (Raceline KTM Thor) was third, with Rhys Budd (Penrite CRF Honda Racing) fourth – the trio within a second at race’s end. Fifth came Jack Kukas (WBR Yamaha).

Team Honda HRC re-signs Roczen through 2022 season

News 4 May 2019

Team Honda HRC re-signs Roczen through 2022 season

Three-year contract extension officially confirmed for popular German.

Image: Supplied.

Team Honda HRC has re-signed Ken Roczen for a further three years through the 2022 AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross seasons in the US.

German star Roczen, who signed with Honda ahead of the 2017 season, will remain aboard the factory CRF450R in the first major move of the current silly season.

“Re-signing with Honda was a no-brainer for me,” Roczen said. “I owe the team a lot and I feel like we have a lot of good days ahead of us. Three years is a long time, so when I signed I was beyond stoked and it was a big pressure relief for me.

“The guys that I work with on this team are like a big family. Over the last two and a half years, the team and I have been through a lot. We’ve had some incredible highs but we’ve also hit rock bottom and one thing that Honda always did—no matter what—was believe in me – they never gave up.

“The team also does whatever it takes to make a rider happy, which is huge because it brings comfort and I want to win just as bad as they do. I know we haven’t done that in a while, but our work and what we do together isn’t done. Them standing behind me through thick and thin, the good times and the bad times, is what makes a great team.”

American Honda manager of powersports marketing communications Lee Edmunds indicated it was a natural step to extend Roczen’s contract for the next three years.

“During his time with Honda so far, Ken’s dedication has been exemplary,” said Edmunds. “The tenacity with which he pursues success is exceeded only by the resolve with which he approaches challenges. We firmly believe that attitude will help him – and us – get back on top. Ken is our guy, and we’re thrilled to continue together.”

Despite his serious injuries from 2017, Roczen earned third place in last year’s Pro Motocross standings and, with one round remaining this AMA Supercross season, he has earned six podium finishes and sits fourth in the points.

Ducati’s Petrucci sets Friday MotoGP benchmark at Jerez

Miller completes top 10 as countryman Gardner takes fifth in Moto2.

Mission Winnow Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci went fastest on Friday in the Red Bull Spanish Grand Prix, less than a tenth of a second quicker than world champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team).

MotoGP championship leader Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati) was third, with Jerez specialist Jorge Lorenzo (Repsol Honda Team) next up as he made major improvements on return to Europe.

Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol), meanwhile, was fifth to make it less than two tenths covering the top five in a Ducati vs Honda duel for supremacy at the top of the time-sheets.

In FP1 Repsol Honda took a 1-2 and Marquez sat behind Dovizioso for a couple of laps, before in FP2 the numbers 93 and 99 spent some time circulating in tandem as Lorenzo got straight back into the mix near the front at one of his most successful venues and Marquez followed him around.

Sixth overall was Maverick Vinales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), ahead of Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu), top rookie Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT), Honda test rider Stefan Bradl (HRC Team) and Australian Jack Miller (Pramac Racing).

HDR Heidrun Speed Up’s Jorge Navarro is Friday’s fastest rider in the Moto2 class, his 1m41.819s set in FP1, with the Spaniard leading Red Bull KTM Ajo teammates Brad Binder and rookie Jorge Martin. Texas winner Tom Luthi (Dynavolt Intact GP) was P4 ahead of Remy Gardner (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team) in fifth.

Niccolo Antonelli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) took Friday honours in the Moto3 class, posting a 1m46.795s in FP2 to edge teammate Tatsuki Suzuki and reigning Moto3 Junior world champion Raul Fernandez (Sama Qatar Angel Nieto Team), just half a tenth in further arrears.

WP Suspension Pro Components: Off-road Innovation

WP Suspension Pro Components allow riders looking for maximum performance to dial in their suspension settings in new ways.

Begin Press Release:

WP SUSPENSION PRO COMPONENTS: OFFROAD INNOVATIONS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION!

TRUE TO THE MOTTO “GET IN FRONT”, WP SUSPENSION IS ON A MISSION TO INNOVATE AND NOW INTRODUCES INSPIRED NEW AND PATENTED TECHNOLOGY FOR THE SUPERTRAX SHOCK ABSORBER.

WP Suspension Pro Components

The new SUPERTRAX shock absorber now features an all-new oil-bypass system, which detects the speed of the spring in rebound to function according to a defined speed rate. The brand new, patented technology makes it possible to activate the bypass according to when, and how, the spring is adjusted via the TXN adjuster. The new SUPERTRAX technology was developed by WP Factory Racing and now, for the first time, advances to serial production.

KTM factory riders’ multiple world championship titles are undoubtedly the best recommendation for the WP XACT PRO 8950 Shock Absorbers, which, with the SUPERTRAX technology now represent the most competitive rear suspension on the market. The latest technology delivers a significant benefit: a smoother, more confident and comfortable ride with less physical strain. The rider also senses more grip traction on the rear wheel and can accelerate faster. This WP-generated innovation represents linked damping system technology with TXN adjuster, which guarantees more controlled rebound damping. For the first time in a serial production rear suspension unit, and in addition to the well-known, state-of-the-art rebound adjustment, the rebound characteristics can also be adjusted in highspeed damping situations.

In addition to the outstanding innovative achievements on the rear shock specifications, the related XACT and XPLOR WP PRO COMPONENT front fork now also match dynamic research and development efforts. This WP patented, super precise valving system offers virtually unlimited damping performance superior to the conventional compromise between sufficient comfort and bottoming reserves. The Cone Valve technology, made to measure from the highest quality materials, eliminates this compromise and provides outstanding damping in any situation. The unlimited opening up of the WP Cone Valve reduces harshness to provide additional comfort, also with a harder set-up. For the new product generation, the piston also comes in a new design.

WP XACT PRO 7448 AER Fork

WP Suspension Pro Components

Featuring the unique benefits of unrivaled lightweight design and packaging, the WP XACT PRO AER fork remains a highlight within the proudly presented offroad suspension line-up. The “7748” specified XACT PRO front fork unites two of WP’s best technologies – the Cone Valve damping system and the AER spring system. The Cone Valve damping leg is an evolution of the traditional Cone Valve fork, and damping is optimized in combination with an AER spring leg. The AER technology saves up to 1kg and is developed for maximum possible performance, almost unlimited configurations and effortless handling. Two separate chambers facilitate optimal initial response options for the AER spring setup.

The elimination of shims in the WP XACT PRO 7548, XPLOR PRO 7548 fork and XACT PRO 7448 AER Fork means there is no loss of damping due to bent shims. The elimination of a sealing surface also guarantees only a minimum drop in pressure after the valve opens.

The latest WP innovations also feature a superior, dedicated new hard chromium coating on the inner tubes that is proved to outperform similar suspension elements in terms of delivering minimum friction. All the latest WP Pro Components are poised to set the standard as the stand-out products in the latest offroad racing and sports technology and are immediately available through the official WP Suspension authorized center network.

WP’s ongoing cooperation with factory teams results in the best technological innovations, attuned to suit a rider‘s actual race experience, giving them confidence and comfort to concentrate on the business of winning.

Motorcycle Watches For The Professional

Wristwatches, like motorcycles, are specialized instruments. You don’t take a Supercross bike on a cross-country freeway haul, or chase lap records on a saddle-bagged cruiser. Similarly, you wouldn’t wear an oversize tool watch to a wedding or funeral. Or to the office. There you want something versatile on your wrist—dressy enough for a professional environment, but also suitable for raising hell during the morning commute. While some of us are lucky enough to have careers riding or wrenching (see page 60), most are pulling a 9-to-5, which means sitting at a desk, staring out at the parking lot, and waiting until quitting time to get back on the bike. These watches work as well at the office as they do on the open road, and are stylish to boot. They’ll make watching the clock a little more tolerable.

Savvy Associate:

Timex Marlin

Price: $199

The original 1960s Marlin brought super-sharp, American-designed watches to the masses. Now Timex is reissuing that mid-century icon with a classic manual movement, the company’s first mechanical watch since 1982, and smart new color combinations. It has the retro looks to impress Don Draper and the durability to take an Easy Rider beating. It also happens to be shockingly affordable. Consider this an instant (and easy) upgrade.

Creative Director:

Nomos Glashütte Tetra

Price: $2,320

Complicated square watches have been synonymous with speed since Steve McQueen wore one while filming Le Mans. NOMOS Glashütte brings a motorcyclist’s approach to the shape, downsizing and paring back frivolous functions to their utilitarian core. Each example is handmade in Germany, with a stout manual-wind movement tucked inside an extra-slender case. Perfect for the enthusiast with small wrists looking to make a big statement.

I.T. Guy:

Montblanc Summit 2

Price: $995

In terms of outright functionality, smartwatches are tough to beat. The rub? Most look like lozenges, give off an AV club vibe, or both. The Summit 2 offers all the rider-friendly tech you want—Bluetooth syncing, voice activation, GPS and navigation—in a traditional steel case, with a rotating crown and handsome calfskin strap. Plus, it’s packing the powerful new Snapdragon processor and latest version of Google Wear OS. Think Swiss charm by way of Silicon Valley.

The Promotion:

Baume & Mercier Classima

Price: $990

Baume & Mercier has nearly two centuries of watchmaking heritage and deep ties to motorcycling. (The brand once did a Burt Munro tribute sports watch, plus special editions for the new Indian Scout and Chief.) Powered by a hassle-free quartz movement, the Classima adds a professional aesthetic to the pedigree, offering all the classic hallmarks of a dress watch: sleek Roman numerals, a tidy date window at the 3 o’clock position, and a handsome dark-colored dial.

The Executive:

Jaeger-lecoultre Reverso

Price: $6,200

Conservative but not stuffy, fashionable but not flashy, precise as a surgeon and reliable as a sunset—the Reverso is an ideal investment timepiece. And its namesake feature is ideal for riders: The entire watch head can swivel 360 degrees, so the metal case’s back faces outward, shielding the dial from debris and road grime. Nothing says “I’m the boss” like a watch that can drop visor when it’s time to get down to business.
