Don’t worry, you’re not trapped. Even with the Coronavirus romping around the country and locking State borders, there are still places you can go on your bike. Here are a few suggestions you may not have thought of. Even if you have thought of them, they may be places you intended to go “sometime” and never got around to. Go now!

Victoria: Well, okay, if you live in Melbourne you may be trapped after all. Once things ease off, here’s a fun one or two day ride. Whitfield is not too far from Melbourne – some 250 km via Yea and Mansfield. There is some excellent riding along the way, and while the pub’s accommodation was a bit ordinary last time I stayed there, it’s close enough to make it a day return ride from Melbourne. If venturing further than after Whitfield head to Myrtleford and then Mount Beauty or Bright.

Queensland: Boonah is a nice little town, and I bet you’ve never even been there! A round trip via Beaudesert and Ipswich is about 200 km. Flavours Café has good coffee and even a little motorcycle history display. Nice run out from behind the Gold Coast via Canungrah.

South Australia: I like the Cradock pub. It’s on the RM Williams Way, about 350 km north of Adelaide. You know how sometimes people say, ‘There’s nothing much there?’ Well, there’s nothing at all at Cradock except the pub, but that’s a tidy little place with very affordable accommodation and quite good food. There are also several alternative ways to get there.

Western Australia: What about Wave Rock? It’s just outside Hyden, 340 km almost due east of Perth. Admittedly the roads to get there are pretty flat and straight, but they are tarred and that means it’s a good chance to give the bike a bit of a run! Nearby and reasonably inexpensive accommodation at the Wave Rock Motel has a pool and free Wi-Fi.  Ye Olde Quindanning Inne near Williams is another good quick out of town ride for lunch, or a big night at the bar with an overnighter.

Tasmania: I’d head for Bothwell, whether I lived in Launceston or Hobart. Good riding both ways (better from Launceston) with some optional routes, and wonderful vanilla slices.

New South Wales: Here’s a destination with a difference. The old silver mining town of Yerranderie is in the Blue Mountains, some 270 km from Sydney over a variety of roads. Mainly tarred, but with some gravel and dirt. Best thing is to camp there; taking all your own supplies.

This 300km stretch is located in the Maritime province of Nova Scotia. The ride will end around the northern tip of Cape Breton Island. Some of the beautiful sceneries you will encounter when riding through the Cabot Trail include old-growth forests, stunning ocean vistas, and rock walls. Ride the Edge

The ride is scenic, and the roads are in their best shape. The towns along this ride are friendly to tourists as they have all the foods you can dream about. You will come across Ontario’s cottage country, where McMansions are the dominant buildings that cover the lakeshores. You can use two routes; the Small Loop and Big Loop if you are coming from Vermont, New York State, Ohio, or the Golden Horseshoe.

The Haines Highway

It is the perfect ride for those who like to wade through a wild route. The 240km stretch follows the ancient routes used by the prospectors of the Klondike Gold Rush and Chilkat Tlingit traders. Expect to come across grand views of alpine tundra, coastal forests, and glaciated mountains as you ride through this route.

The Kananaskis Trail Alberta

It is one of the best trails if you want something scenic just outside the city of Calgary. The area is snowy during the winter months, which makes it unfit for riding. You will come across the Rocky Mountains, the Peter Lougheed provincial park, and the Kananaskis Range as you ride through this trail. You will also enjoy the views of crystal clear rivers, the emerald green lakes, wildlife, and snow-capped peaks.

The Confederation Bridge

This bridge links Northumberland Strait, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. The Confederation Bridge is the world’s longest bridge crossing over ice-covered waters. We have not covered every motorcycle stretch in Canada, but the above are some of the best. You can stopover in various hotels, spin a few slots in a kaszino or, even go on a shopping spree as you cool down after a good ride. Motorcycling Around Greece: 4 Islands that are a Must See

Greece is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe and is a fantastic place for a holiday any time of the year. The thriving capital city of Athens is home to some of the most important archaeological attractions in the world and ancient monuments such as the Parthenon and Acropolis of Athens, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Ancient Agora are all fascinating places to visit.

As well as the mainland, Greece has hundreds of beautiful islands that are perfect destinations for holidays, especially during the summer months. Greece is also a great destination for motorcycle tours and there are lots of amazing places that you can visit with your motorcycle.

In this article we will take a look at some of the most famous islands that you can enjoy when you take your tour around Greece. There are frequent ferry connections to all the main islands in Greece and the port of Piraeus, which services the city of Athens.

Crete

Crete is the largest of all Greek islands and is located in the south east of the Aegean. It is an island that is ideal for visiting any time of the year, and has lots of wonderful places to visit and experience. What makes Crete an ideal place for a motorcycle holiday is the fact that the whole island is connected by one main highway that runs across the northern part of the island.

Crete consists of four main municipalities – Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lassithi – each of which is home to a range of beautiful villages, coastal resorts and lots of places of natural beauty from dominating mountain ranges and valleys, to forests and isolated plains.

The ferries from Athens will usually arrive in Heraklion, which is the capital of the island, or in Chania. Wherever you arrive, you can head off along the main highway and make as many stops as you want to take in the gorgeous regions. While in Crete, don’t forget to sample some of the delicious local cuisine.

Rhodes

The island of Rhodes is the largest in the group known as the Dodecanese, and is an island filled with history, sights and an impressive coastline. There are frequent ferries to Rhodes from Athens, as well as from other ports in Greece.

You can enjoy some great motorcycle tours of the island, as you travel around the visit the beautiful beach resorts, mountain villages and everything in between. For those who enjoy a flutter, Rhodes is also home to the famous Rodos Kaszino, which is located in the northern part of the island.

Rhodes has a very interesting history and there are lots of great sites and places to stop and visit, such as the famous medieval town, which is a World Heritage Site. The landscape and scenery here make it an ideal destination for a motorcycle holiday, and it’s also a very safe island for travelers, and one that attracts all types of visitors from around the world.

Santorini

Santorini has to be mentioned on this list, simply because it is easily one of the most famous and beautiful islands in all of Greece. The island has frequent connections by ferry to Athens, and though not as large as Rhodes of Crete, has lots of wonderful places to visit and experience.

The town of Oia in the north of the island is home to some of the most amazing sunsets in the world. It is here that you will find the whitewashed houses, blue domed churches and narrow paths and streets to explore. There are lots of other interesting towns and villages in Santorini such as the capital of Fira, which is a great place to visit, as well as some lovely coastal towns such as Perissa, Emborio and Kamari.

Santorini is famous for many things such as the local cuisine, its wine and of course the famous volcano, which created the truly unique landscape of the island, which is unlike anything else you would have ever experienced.

Evia

The island of Evia is not one of the most famous for visitors from abroad, but it is actually an amazing travel location and its size makes it perfect for motorcycle tours. It is actually the second largest island in Greece after Crete, but what makes it that much more special is that you can actually reach it by land. There is a bridge connecting the mainland with the capital town of Chalkida, which is just over an hours drive from Athens.

Evia has lots of stunning places to visit all over the island. The northern part is the most beautiful with dense forests, impressive mountains and gorgeous beaches. The center and southern parts are also full of interesting places to explore and visit. There is a great road infrastructure around the island, making it an ideal place to head to and then start exploring.

Greece is a great destination for travel throughout the year, and for those who are looking for something different for a motorcycle holiday, then Greece has so many wonderful islands and destinations that are perfect for exploring on two wheels. The combination of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island create a truly unique backdrop that is perfect for motorcycle tours, and is a location that has so many wonderful places to explore and experience. In this article, you will find information about some of the best places where you can enjoy a tour of the United Kingdom on your motorbike.

The United Kingdom is a great place for holidays and travel throughout the year. There are great road networks, so taking a tour with your motorcycle is an excellent option, especially during the spring or summer months.

You’ll easily be able to find a good choice of cheap accommodation along your routes, with a good option being a bed and breakfast. If you are planning to spend a few days in a specific part of the country, then it will probably be a good idea to book yourself accommodation in advance, especially during the summer.

Most accommodation will have WiFi so you can always pop online to check your emails, or upload some photos from your travels. You can also pop onto a casino online and place a few bets on your football team if you fancy a wager.

The UK has so much history and places of interest that you could spend a lifetime touring around and visiting places and still not see everything there is on offer.

How to apply for a Queensland entry pass

If you are planning a ride across the Queensland border you will now have to apply online for a new entry pass as the previous pass is no longer valid.

That means Queensland riders wanting to ride to another state and return as well as visitors from other states.

Note that the new Queensland Entry Declaration is only valid for seven days so you may have to reapply every time you cross the border!

However, it takes less than a minute to fill out the questionnaire and I received the confirmation email with attached pass within seconds of submitting my request.Border entry pass

The printed entry pass will allow residents and some non-residents to go back and forth across the border.

It needs to be displayed on your vehicle, otherwise riders can keep it in their jacket pocket and produce it at the border.

Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Gollschewski says you will also have to carry identification which shows your residential address.

Queensland Police say they are revising their border checkpoint processes to “enable a more seamless crossing for those travelling from states other than Victoria”.

Queensland borders reopen from 10 July 2020 to visitors from all states and territories other than Victoria.

That means riders will still need to fill in the new entry pass.

Queensland can leave and return, but should avoid travelling to Victoria.

It also means riders from all other states and territories can enter Queensland so long as they have not been to Victoria in the past 14 days.

However, some border crossings, such as Numinbah Valley and the Lions Rd will remain closed with a concrete barrier.

They will likely remain that way so long as Queensland’s borders require monitoring by police.

Failure to comply with Queensland’s quarantine directions and border entry restrictions can result in on-the-spot fines of $1334 for individuals and $6672 for corporations.

If you lie on your declaration or are entering Queensland unlawfully, you face a $4003 fine.

Anyone who has travelled from Victoria and enters Queensland from today (3 July), including Queenslanders, will have to quarantine at their own expense for 14 days.

Roving weekend for Himalayans and Rovers

With the borders opening, Royal Enfield plans a Himalayan & Adventure Weekend of roving around the Byron Bay hinterland on their bikes and in Land Rovers.

The border between Queensland and NSW opens on July 10, just in time for this roving adventure on July 18-19.

However, Queensland riders will still have to obtain an entry pass and may face a long queue when they return across the border as police check your credentials.

The event is supported by Royal Enfield Australia & New Zealand and hosted by Salt Creek Motorcycles and 4WD accessories company The Adventure Garage.

RE spokesman Mal Jarrett says they have been planning the adventure for a while and have been fortunate with the timing.

“Salt Creek Motorcycles is an adventure tour company based in Ballina that uses Himalayans exclusively,” he says.

“The Adventure Garage shares the same shed in Ballina and runs Land Rover adventure tours in the same locale, so it made sense to run an event in unison.” 

Riders will find they are roving the beautiful Byron Bay hinterland and Border Ranges roads – both tar and gravel.

The overnight camp is on private land near Kunghur/UKI, NSW, which is a private property with 3500 acres to explore by bike and 4WD and spectacular views of the Border Ranges and NightCap.

While the adventure is best suited for Himalayan adventure bikes, we imagine there will be some riders on other Royal Enfields which are quite competent in many gravel road conditions.

Anyway, Salt Creek Motorcycles have a couple of Himalayans for hire at $260 for the two days.

They say they will have qualified senior first-aid personnel attending and a briefing to ensure the vehicles are separated for safety.

There will also be a support vehicle and trailer to transport your gear on both days.

The event is not associated with Land Rover Australia but is restricted to Land Rover owners.

Covid crisis claims Compass Expeditions

The COVID-19 pandemic has sadly claimed the Australian-based Compass Expeditions worldwide motorcycle travel company.

A Facebook statement from the company blames their closure on the “subsequent collapse of forward bookings coupled with complete lack of business confidence going forward”.

Several other motorcycle travel companies have temporarily stalled or dramatically dropped their prices.

I contacted Compass Expeditions for more details, but they have not yet responded.

A few years ago I travelled with the company on their first outback tour with Charley Boorman. They have conducted several more tours in Australia with Charley.

I found they were a highly and honourable professional company.

So I was not surprised to find their statement says they will offer refunds to all customers:

Currently Compass Expeditions is in a financial position to refund ALL deposits paid for ALL tours booked, however this will not always be the case if we choose to ‘hang on’, and all indicators point towards Australians not being permitted to travel internationally for a long time yet, it is therefore only prudent for us to refund all monies owed and close the doors, now,  considering 75% of our clients are Australian.

Back in February when we contacted the company about their pandemic refund policy, spokesman Craig Jackson pointed out their terms state that any cancellation within 90 days is non-refundable.

However, it now appears they have done the honourable thing for their customers.

“We offered the option to roll over deposits until 2021/22 or refund deposits, 95% took the refund  option, which is what we would have done if we were in the same situation,” their statement says.

“However this has left us financially vulnerable. We have decided to cease operations now and still be in the position to refund all deposits owing as soon as possible.

“Everyone with current deposits has been contacted personally and refunds have been organised.”

I hope their integrity and honesty is rewarded should they restart the company after the international borders re-open.

Motorcycle tours become electrified

Range and recharging times may still be an issue for electric motorcycles, yet it looks like the motorcycle travel industry may become electrified.

A few years ago, Eidelweiss Motorcycle Tours in Europe started hiring electric Zero motorcycles, although it appears that is no longer the case.

Perhaps they had too many customers running out of charge a long way from home!

However, that hasn’t stopped Swedish company CAKE who make lightweight electric motorcycles.

They have formed a partnership with Skoj P Hoj to offer electric enduro and off-road test rides and guided tours using their Kalk models.

Off-road tours are usually shorter than road tours, although finding charging points might be more difficult out in the country.

Paris-Dakar and enduro race veteran and owner of Skoj P Hoj, Olle Ohlsson, believes “electric is the future” and says they have several benefits over traditional bikes.

“These bikes don’t disturb: there is nearly no noise, no pollution,” he says.

“And the ease of riding — with no clutching or changing gears — means that the addressable market is sky-high.

“It’s a whole new layer of business opportunity.

“We have had world-class athletes and beginners riding and with pre-set riding modes it means everyone has a blast.” 

Skoj P Hoj, can take groups of five for half or full-day explorations, on the trails north of Stockholm. The bikes being used are all CAKE Kalk, street-certified enduro/off-road bikes.

The Cake Kalk weighs only 69kg and has a top speed of about 80km/h.

They say range is up to three hours, depending on “a number of different aspects, e.g. riding style, rider weight, weather conditions, temperature, road surface and tyre pressure”.

Charging takes 90 minutes from flat to 80% or 2.5 hours to full charge from a standard outlet.

Presumably riders could head out for three hours of enduro riding the trails, then stop somewhere for a long lunch where they plug in and then ride home.

Where to Visit on Your Bike Trip in Devon

If you want to ride your bike in Devon, UK, then you are surely in for a great time as you will view the countryside that is undeniably dramatic and gorgeous. That is why you will enjoy a great ride from Okehampton to Brent Tor. This trip will equate to 32 miles or 51km. 

This bike trip will take you primarily over a path that was formerly used for railways. This pathway is free of traffic for the most part. There will be a loop that will take you through some somewhat hilly lanes.

You will start at Okehampton. You will take an eleven-mile ride to Lydford over Granite Way. This is an amazing cycleway that will be within the range of three miles from High Willhays. This is the highest point in the area. In fact, this is known to be the highest point in England to the southern region of Peak District. 

You will enjoy exquisite views, such as the incredible viaducts of the Victorian era. There is also a wonderful loop of lanes that are hilly that will take you to your destination of Brent Tor, which is noted as being one of the most iconic landmarks of the region.

As you are about one mile from Okehampton, you will note the Meldon Viaduct. This is regarded as Victorian lattice that is crafted from cast iron. It is curved in a gentle manner and rises one hundred and fifty feet above the West Okement River.

A few more miles into your trip, you will note the stately Lake Viaduct. It has masterful arches that are crafted of fine quality granite. The rail-trail then finishes at the region of Lydford. Lydford is a stunning village that was regarded as a notable region of power during the times of the Normans and Saxons. 

There is an impressive castle along with fortifications at Lydford, and there is no charge to explore the castle or fortifications. There is also a waterfall at Lydford Gorge. The waterfall is thirty meters in height. It is free to view only to those who are members of the National Trust.

You will experience a climb that is steady as you approach Bren Tor. This is a volcano that is extinct. It is notoriously capped with a chapel that dates back to the time of the fourteenth century. 

Then on your return, you will take a descent via Chillaton that will bring you to a bridge that rests over the Lyd River. The final significant climb is via Galford Down. There you will delight in terrific views of some of the highest tors of the region. As you make your return to Okehampton, you will ride along the Granite Way.

It cannot be denied that this is a fantastic bike route that will make you feel exhilarated and refreshed. This is a great ride to take along with a companion. Be sure to bring your camera to take some photos or videos. Also, bring some water to stay hydrated.
