The U.S. Adventure Rider Rally is set to return for its 16th year in 2019 for an adrenaline seeking weekend at the picturesque Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge, Colorado. Held September 13-15, the KTM Adventure Rider Rally offers participants the opportunity to explore the Rocky Mountains in its purest form–on two wheels.
Then two weeks later, September 26-28, at Red Mountain Resort in Rossland, British Columbia, the Canadian Adventure Rally is coming back for its third year on the Canadian West Coast. Adventure enthusiasts will enjoy some of the most epic riding just north of the U.S. border. Nestled in the heart of the Columbian mountains, the Canadian rally will offer unique unspoiled backcountry riding conditions.
Both North American rallies include spectacular riding opportunities, demo rides on KTM’s latest Adventure lineup, the opportunity to speak with KTM’s factory technicians, enjoy an awards dinner and take a first-look at the brand new KTM 790 Adventure. Open to all brands, KTM’s Adventure Rider Rallies are a place for likeminded enthusiasts to come together and share their passion for adventure riding in some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world.
For participants of the three-day U.S. rally, an all-new element has been added in 2019 with an overnight camping option following a day-long off-road adventure. Participants will depart Beaver Run Resort’s basecamp on Friday morning to set out on a 100-150-mile ride, ending at the overnight campsite with dinner provided. The next day, participants will head out on another excursion that will bring them back to basecamp for Saturday night’s awards ceremony.
Participants will have the opportunity to ride various trails and back roads throughout the Rocky Mountains and there will be options for every skill level as routes will vary in difficulty and distance. Routes will be available on-site at the event and there will be an option for riders to go on self-guided rides with fellow enthusiasts. Participants will also have the option to “Ride With the Pros” on guided rides led by off-road legends and KTM Ambassadors Mike Lafferty, Scott Bright, Taylor Robert, Russell Bobbitt and Paul Krause. Jimmy Lewis Riding Schools will be on-site conducting lessons and hosting nightly activities along vendor row with a ton of adventure motorcycle aftermarket companies and KTM’s factory R&D team will be answering technical questions all weekend long.
Canadian participants will also receive a new format for 2019 with a new two-day navigation rally, open to all motorcycle brands over 600cc. The two-day KTM Navigation Rally will be tailored to suit all rider abilities and interests–from long distance adventure touring, to off-road adventure enthusiasts. Teams of two to four riders will take on the challenge of navigating across the Canadian Western Mountains while following a GPS route and staying as close as possible to the total mileage. Red Mountain Resort showcases diverse and exciting routes for all types of riders. Participants will also benefit from the presence of the pros such as Chris Birch, access to KTM staff, dedicated adventure vendors and the ability to demo KTM’s latest Adventure lineup, including the new KTM 790 Adventure R.
KTM is pleased to welcome back the Ultimate Race Qualifier for the second-straight year at both rallies. More details will follow regarding the Ultimate Race Qualifier, but interested participants can sign up now to secure a spot as space is limited for this event.

Nestled among ranchland and wheat fields in the state’s northeast corner, reviewing the history of Pendleton, Oregon, conjures images of rough-and-tumble rodeo cowboys, Native Americans, woolen blankets and whiskey. Now for the fourth consecutive year, a new type of rough and “rumble” is settling in during the dog days of summer: Pendleton Bike Week, or PBW.
Event organizer Eric Folkestad is no stranger to this type of venue, since he was previously behind the Hells Canyon Motorcycle Rally. After four years of great support from local officials, law enforcement and the community, Folkestad feels PBW will continue to grow and present enough to attendees to make the list of many riders’ annual “go to” events.
Some great music was in the house, with sounds from the 1970s to today, played live by Foghat, Petty Fever (Tom Petty tribute band), Roni Lee and many great acts in between. Also on hand were the Seattle Cossacks stunt and drill team, who were celebrating 80 years of performing as an organized group, which was marked with a downtown celebration and presentation to the Cossacks of the key to the city. These guys are a spectacle that must be seen at least once in a rider’s life–witnessing a third-generation Cossack take on the harder stunts in the heat three times a day restored my faith in motorcycling youth.
On that note, it was hard to ignore that the crowd’s average age continues to rise. Perhaps the lure of redesigned machines with trendy and appealing features like the bikes available for demo rides from Indian and Yamaha will start to draw in newer riders. The 2018 PBW also hosted a flat track race on Saturday night as well as organized day rides, poker runs and a memorial ride. Great riding spreads out from Pendleton like the spokes on a wagon wheel, so there was something for everyone to enjoy at their own pace.
Pendleton itself has always been one of my favorite stops and has historic buildings, fantastic food and some cool stuff to see and do off the bike. I took in the Pendleton Underground Tour, which regales participants with the often sad, bawdy, illicit history of Pendleton and how it shaped the town into what it has become. It was very much worth the price of admission.
I also used the long weekend to reassemble my band of miscreants I have dubbed the “Guardrail Gang,” which includes me, my son, a nephew and a friend since birth. Seventeen years ago, we set out on a route very close by and just four hours into it my son, with the sun in his eyes, misjudged his entry speed and kissed a guardrail…hard. I saw more of the inside of his kneecap than I ever wanted to that day. My friend Mike had ridden ahead to our night’s destination, and many hours later when he got word he rode through the night to meet us back at the hospital. We all have a good story now, and this was the first time we have reassembled since then for a much less dramatic 200-mile loop on some lovely roads.
We left our digs in Athena, Oregon, and headed into the cool of Tollgate Pass, riding east on State Route 204 to the welcoming town of Elgin. After a brief southward jaunt via U.S. Route 82 to La Grande, we grabbed breakfast at the Smokehouse Café (highly recommended), then picked up U.S. Route 84 north until Hilgard junction gave us access to State Route 244 westward, bound for Ukiah. After some delicious curves in the quickly warming day, we took U.S. Route 395 at Ukiah and headed north again to Pendleton over the undulating Battle Mountain, a real treat for any rider.
If you get bored of sweating out mid-July where you currently reside, make the trek to Pendleton for the 2019 Bike Week (July 17-21); it will surely warm you up in more ways than one.
In three short years, the DirtDaze Adventure Bike Rally has become one of the largest adventure events in the U.S. In 2019, it will move to a new, larger venue and will take place later in the riding season.
For DirtDaze’s first three years it was held in Lake Lucerne, New York, during the first week of June–at the same time and just a few miles away from the Americade touring rally in Lake George.
The Northeast rally will continue to offer extensive guided and unguided rides, demo rides, rider training and camping/lodging.
“We’re very excited about this change,” said Christian Dutcher, the rally’s director. “We’ve narrowed the potential new location to two different regions, both of which offer incredible riding. And, the new dates will allow our staff to do even more with the event, which the attendees are going to love. We’re hoping to unveil the new location and dates by January 1st.”
The DirtDaze Adventure Bike Rally is a fun, adventurous and educational multi-day festival for dual-sport and adventure motorcycles. The event offers on-site demos and vendors, world-class rider training, dual-sport rides to far-off destinations with lunch, fun night time activities, riding games and contests.
