BMW Confirms: New Cruiser Coming in 2020

Revival Cycles The Revival Birdcage
Revival Cycles unveiled The Revival Birdcage at the Handbuilt Show in Austin, Texas, last Thursday, April 11. The custom bike was built around a new prototype “Big Boxer” engine that will eventually power a production model in 2020. Photos courtesy BMW.

Custom builder Revival Cycles unveiled “The Revival Birdcage,” a custom motorcycle based around a new prototype engine BMW calls the “Big Boxer,” at the Handbuilt Show in Austin, Texas, last Thursday. The bike itself is a work of art, with a delicate-looking titanium trellis frame and wildly swooping handlebars reminiscent of a bird’s wings.

But tucked away in the press release like an afterthought was a big announcement from Motorrad: it will definitely be entering the cruiser market in the U.S., with a concept bike slated to be shown sometime in the first half of 2019 (getting pretty close to that deadline, guys) and a “series production motorcycle with the Big Boxer for the Cruiser segment in the course of 2020.”

Alan Stulberg, head of Revival Cycles, made note of the “pure physical size and aesthetic appeal” of the prototype engine. Other details noticeable in the photos are visible pushrods and cooling fins on the cylinders, with BMW confirming that the new engine will be air/oil-cooled.

Custom Works Zon The Departed
Japanese builder Custom Works Zon built the first custom bike around the new engine, unveiling it last December 2018, in Yokohama, Japan.

The Revival Birdcage is the second custom bike to be built around the new engine. Japanese builder Custom Works Zon presented “The Departed” at the Hot Rod Custom Show in Yokohama, Japan, back in December 2018. This is the first time BMW has copped to a new cruiser production model, however.

What do you think? Will it be another R 1200 C disaster? Or is BMW getting ready to blow all of our minds with R nineT levels of success? We can’t wait to find out.

BMW hasn’t offered many details on the new engine, just that it’s “large displacement.”

New Gear: Arai RAM-X Open-Face Helmet

Arai RAM-X open face helmet

The RAM-X is a new premium open-face touring helmet from Arai, which means no corners were cut and protection is number one. Under the composite shell is a one-piece, multi-density EPS liner that is designed to best absorb and distribute the force of an impact. Arai’s testing has shown that the smaller the impact area, the firmer the liner needs to be in order to absorb that impact. Therefore it used firm foam around the smallest impact areas of the forehead and the base of the head, the softest foam at the large crown area and medium density in between.

Inside is a removable/washable/sizeable liner and the RAM-X features the same free-flowing ventilation as the top-of-the-line Corsair-X race helmet. With all three top vents open, plus the two forehead vents, the RAM-X flows tons of air, thanks partly to the seven exhaust vents. The included Pinlock-ready face shield gives excellent coverage, with improved, easier-to-use shutter forehead vents, and the Pro Shade sun visor system is a clever alternative to an integrated drop-down sun shield. Put the Pro Shade in its fully upright position and it functions like the peak of an ADV helmet, partly closed it’s perfect for late afternoon sun and fully closed it covers almost as much of the clear shield as a regular full-face helmet visor. The RAM-X is available in several colors in sizes XS-2XL spread over three shell sizes, starting at $679.95.

Catching the DFW Auto Show’s attention is a major milestone, not only for Discover the Ride, but for the overarching industry. Through a safe, fun and quick introduction to riding, Discover the Ride is paving the way for the larger motorcycle industry by initiating educational conversations and addressing hesitations, that will in turn, encourage consumers to take the first step toward becoming a motorcyclist.

In the midst of industry-wide ridership concerns, Discover the Ride successfully took the industry’s first stride toward bridging the gap for non-riders to experience the thrill of two wheels. In fact, in its first year alone, nearly 8,000 attendees of all ages participated in Discover the Ride over the course of seven shows, with more than a quarter of adults being new to motorcycling.

After its successful debut at the New York International Motorcycle Show in December, the Nmoto Nostalgia project is now entering limited production.

The Nmoto Nostalgia is a one-of-a-kind endeavor to capture the ambition of the legendary BMW R7. With the comfortable suspension and unique steering mechanisms encased in a canonical design inspired by the BMW R7 pre-war prototype, the Nostalgia motorcycle gives enthusiasts a slice of the past without sacrificing performance or rider experience.

The core of the Nostalgia is a modern BMW R Nine T, outfitted with 96 handcrafted pieces. This includes more than 11 premium parts from reputable aftermarket companies. Constructed primarily of aircraft-grade aluminum, the Nostalgia motorcycles are lighter than a stock R Nine T and the original 1934 prototype. Modern technology also provides more power and maneuverability so riders get the best of both worlds – Art Deco design and looks with contemporary performance and reliability.

The Nmoto Nostalgia is based on the BMW R nineT. Photo courtesy Nmoto.Enthusiasts and collectors know that vintage motorcycles require constant maintenance and attention, which is why they are more often kept as collectibles than for utility. Nmoto believes that the primary pleasure in motorcycle ownership is in riding, which is why they created the Nmoto Nostalgia. Beyond just being beautiful and wholly distinct, it’s reliable, safe and comfortable enough to ride every single day.
“The response in New York was tremendous,” said Nmoto founder Alexander Niznik. “We had a lot of interest from the public and the media, a lot of positive feedback, and we’re already taking orders, including from famed musician Billy Joel and renowned BMW historian Peter Nettesheim.”
Available in a limited production series, orders are now being taken with a finished base price of $49,500 and an expected wait time of 3 to 6 months. For more details and information, visit nmoto.com.

U.S. Households with a Motorcycle Climbs to Record 8 Percent in 2018

If you’ve noticed more motorcycles tucked inside garages across the country, or parked out front, you’re not imagining things. Eight percent of U.S. households had at least one bike in 2018, the most ever recorded in decades of polling by the Motorcycle Industry Council.

Motorcycle Industry Council MIC motorcycle ownership in the U.S. 2018Motorcycle households rose from 6.94 percent in 2014 (the last full survey) to a record 8.02 percent in 2018, an increase of more than 1.5 million homes. The United States Census Bureau’s most recent estimate put the number of U.S. households at 126,224,000. The MIC Owner Survey found that 10,124,400 of those homes had a motorcycle.

“The household penetration numbers have always been among the most important figures to us,” said MIC President and CEO Tim Buche. “We’re certainly happy to see more homes that have a motorcycle. Riders who talk about motorcycling to friends and neighbors help to inspire people who don’t yet ride.”

The number of motorcycles owned also reached record levels, according to the survey, jumping to 13,158,100 last year, an increase of more than 2.5 million motorcycles compared to 2014. It is even higher than the previous record from 2009 (11,704,500), which followed a long period of high-volume new-bike sales.

The estimated number of motorcycles in use rose to 12,231,000 in 2018, an increase of more than 2 million since 2014. And that number was more than 1 million better than the record figure from 2009, when 11,015,105 motorcycles were in use.

“Modern motorcycles are high-quality machines, enabling the pre-owned market to be a key part of the overall growth in the motorcycle and rider population,” said Jim Woodruff, secretary/treasurer of the MIC Board of Directors and COO of National Powersport Auctions. “The annual pre-owned market is actually three times larger than the new market. Used bikes appeal to many riders because there are so many options in terms of price and style.”

And what about riders who owned more than one motorcycle, or a home that had more than one rider and maybe more than one bike? The 2018 survey revealed that the number of motorcycles per household with a bike stood at 1.30, up slightly compared with 2014 when it was 1.23, but down compared to 1.53 recorded in 2009.

The percentage of motorcycles in running order was down 3 percentage points, from 96.1 percent in 2014 to 93 percent in 2018. But compared to a decade ago (94.1 percent) it was only down one percentage point last year.

“As used units become a larger part of the overall motorcycle population, it’s not surprising to see a slight decrease in the percentage of operating units,” Woodruff said. “Our research shows that the average age of a pre-owned motorcycle sold in the U.S. is approximately eight years old. Plus, vintage bikes are on trend now and many riders are keeping non-runners as part of their collection.”

About the MIC:
The Motorcycle Industry Council exists to preserve, protect and promote motorcycling through government relations, communications and media relations, statistics and research, aftermarket programs, development of data communications standards, and activities surrounding technical and regulatory issues. As a not-for-profit national industry association, the MIC seeks to support motorcyclists by representing manufacturers, distributors, dealers and retailers of motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, ROVs, motorcycle/ATV/ROV parts, accessories and related goods and services, and members of allied trades such as insurance, finance and investment companies, media companies and consultants.

Reg Pridmore’s All-Women CLASS will be held Monday, April 8, at Streets of Willow. Photo by Jenny Smith.

After a successful first ever all-women’s CLASS last year, Reg Pridmore’s CLASS Motorcycle School has announced a date for its second women’s trackday: Monday, April 8, at Streets of Willow in Rosamond, California (about 1. 5 hours north of Los Angeles).

“What CLASS offers to street riders is so much more than just a track day,” explains Reg’s wife and CLASS Instructor Gigi Pridmore. “We want to help you to actually become a better rider! It’s a fun and friendly atmosphere and whether you’re a trackday regular or new to the track experience, we promise to make you feel right at home and have an absolute blast! One of our goals is to get more women who might feel a little shy about taking their street bike onto the track out to ride and learn with us. There’s lots of great instruction but there’s also a ton of track time, so lots of time to practice and improve with every lap. It’s a no pressure setting, we just want the women to have a really good time and go away having made new friends, with a lot more skill and feeling a lot more confident on their motorcycle. Our team is fantastic when it comes to teaching riders of either gender, and the low ego format of CLASS blends perfectly to help women of all ages and varied experience levels to be the best they can be.”

The price for the full day of instruction and track time is $295, and if you register before February 1 the price is only $250. Space can be reserved with a deposit of $150, with the balance due in early March.

You can also rent one of the CLASS Honda CBR500s; see website for details.
