KTM has announced the return of the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S and Super Adventure R for 2024, high-performance ADV bikes tailored to the street (S) and off-road (R). Both bikes return with the features riders have grown to appreciate over the years, as well as new color and graphic schemes.

According to KTM, “While the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S will pound the roads and cope with the dust, gravel and light, loose ground, the ‘R’ is orientated for hardcore offroad adventurers who want and need premium kit to level any landscape or terrain.”

The KTM 1290 Super Adventure S and Super Adventure R are both powered by a 1,301cc LC8 V-Twin mated to a 6-speed Pankl transmission and a PASC slip/assist clutch. The heart of the bikes is regulated by a Bosch 6D IMU that provides inputs for the ride modes (Sport, Street, Offroad, Rain, and optional Rally, which includes 9-levels of adjustable MTC intervention), Motorcycle Traction Control, cornering ABS, cornering lights, and (on the S) electronic suspension. When we put the 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R on Jett Tuning’s dyno in Sport mode, the bike produced 126 hp at 9,100 rpm and 88 lb-ft of torque at 8,000 rpm at the rear wheel. In Off-road mode, it made 81 hp at 6,600 rpm and 62 lb-ft of torque at 6,900 rpm.

Rider EIC Greg Drevenstedt has reviewed both the 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R and 2018 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S. While we’re not sure about no trail being of reach, he said of the Super Adventure R that it can “take you to places well off the beaten path,” and when it came to the S, he said that “regardless of the condition of the pavement or the radius of the curve, the KTM is unflappable.”

Both bikes have a 22-lb chromoly stainless-steel frame and vertically stacked LEDs with low beam, high beam, and cornering lights that illuminate sequentially as lean angle increases. The seat on the R is fixed at 34.6 inches, while the S has a height-adjustable seat (33.4 or 34.2 inches). Ground clearance also differs, with 9.5 inches on the R compared with 8.7 inches on the S. Additionally, the R offers adjustable handlebar positions, engine guards, and a skid plate.

The S rides on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear tires, compared with 21/18 on the R.

For 2023, KTM has taken the base of the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S, which the company says is “engineered to conquer mile after mile on all types of terrain,” and added a fresh sheen as well as several refinements for the benefit of practical adventuring.

The KTM 1290 Super Adventure S is still powered by the 1,301cc LC8 V-Twin making a claimed 160 hp and 102 lb-ft of torque and mated to a 6-speed Pankl transmission and a PASC slip/assist clutch.

A few years ago, we took the 2018 model on roads ranging from those found in Joshua Tree National Park to clogged Southern California freeways.

“Regardless of the condition of the pavement or the radius of the curve, the KTM is unflappable,” our reviewer wrote.

The 2023 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S has a 22-lb chromoly stainless-steel frame, vertically stacked LEDs with low beam, high beam, and cornering lights that illuminate sequentially as lean angle increases, a reengineered windscreen and adjuster, a height-adjustable seat (33.4 or 34.2 inches), and a new lightweight aluminum sidestand.

The heart of the bike is regulated by a Bosch 6D IMU administering the ride height, ABS, ride modes (Sport, Street, Offroad, Rain, and optional Rally), tire-pressure monitoring, and the WP semi-active suspension damping and anti-dive (WP Suspension Pro is an optional upgrade, as is Quickshifter+).

For 2023, KTM says that roaming roads everywhere and anywhere is now a lot easier thanks to augmented navigation software. The 7-inch TFT display already gave the rider full control over the ride modes, suspension, ABS settings, and adaptive cruise control, but for 2023, KTM aimed for more utility. The KTMConnect App now boasts Turn-by-Turn+ guidance and waypoint markers while on the go and without having to stop and adjust any mobile device. The same functionality also extends to audio tracks and listing ‘Favorites’ when it comes to phone calls.

2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S | First Look Review

2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S

In 2017, KTM split its 1290 Super Adventure into two variants. The R trim favors off-road exploration while the S model takes to the tarmac. The 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S has been updated with even more tech, comfort, and performance for the open road.

KTM’s vaunted LC8 V-Twin loses 3.5 pounds thanks to thinner cases and a new oil circuit. The liquid-cooled, 1,301cc engine also benefits from a new dual-radiator system that shuttles hot air away from the rider while cooling each cylinder more efficiently. KTM integrates the radiators into redesigned bodywork including a low-slung, 6.1-gallon gas tank. A lower seat delivers all-day comfort with 0.8 inch of adjustability while riders can shift the wind tunnel-tested windscreen up by 2.2 inches.

2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S

Under the new bodywork, KTM tweaked the chromoly steel frame, shifting the steering head rearward by 0.6 inch. Further aft, the new aluminum subframe balances the 1290 Super Adventure S’s weight distribution for optimal agility and stability. An extended open lattice swingarm also steadies the big-bore ADV at high speeds and under acceleration. WP APEX Semi-Active Technology (SAT) suspension automatically adjusts damping parameters on the fly in Comfort, Street, and Sport modes. Owners can expand the SAT functions with optional Off-Road, Auto, and Advanced suspension modes.

2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S

A new WP APEX rear shock now offers 7.9 inches of travel with 10 steps of hydraulic preload adjustment. Customers can also spring for KTM’s optional automatic leveling system, which adapts the suspension to High, Low, and Standard settings according to added weight. While KTM equips the Super Adventure S for the road, Off-Road ABS lets riders lock up the rear for slides and mitigates ABS intervention on the front wheel.

2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S

The 1290 Super Adventure has always been on the technological forefront and the 2022 S model ups the ante with radar-assisted adaptive cruise control (ACC). The Bosch-developed system automatically adjusts speed based on the traffic ahead and users can tailor following distance with five settings. Street, Sport, Off-Road, and Rain ride modes are even more refined with a six-axis lean angle sensor and a less intrusive traction control system. Users can also add KTM’s Rally ride mode, hill hold control, motor slip regulation, and a quickshifter as options.

2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S

The new 7-inch TFT display features a user-friendly interface along with KTM My Ride Bluetooth connectivity. A waterproof smartphone compartment protects the user’s devices against the elements while providing USB charging. KTM’s new Race On system also allows the rider to start the adventure bike, lock the steering column, and open the gas cap without using a key. The 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S sets a new benchmark for performance and technology, but there’s no word yet on availability or pricing.
