Harley and Indian announce 2018 sales results

Electric bicycles in the snow, bikes made in Thailand and Europe, lower prices, higher costs, tariff wars and removable batteries are all part of the Harley-Davidson and Polaris 2018 sales and revenue results.

Harley-Davidson spent the weekend showing off its new electric bicycle and scooter to young thrill-seekers at the X Games in Aspen, Colorado, before announcing their 2018 results.

No wonder they are seeking a new and younger audience as the company report their motorcycles sales results were down 6.1% in 2018 to to 228,051.

The big problem is in the US where sales were down 10.2% to 132,868, while international sales were actually up 0.4% to 95,183. Australia, however, was down 21.2% to 7019.

It’s not just Harley feeling the domestic pinch. Indian Motorcycle was also down “low-double digits” percentages last year in North America, but up “single-digit” percentages worldwide. (Unlike Harley, Indian’s parent company, Polaris, does not give actual figures, but vague percentages.)

Also, unlike Harley, Indian Motorcycle was up 8.7% to 836 in Australia, one of only four companies to register growth in the market which was down 9.6%.

Tariff war

Both Harley and Polaris have blamed the tariff war for higher costs and lower motorcycle revenues.

President Donald Trump’s tariffs on international steel and aluminium plus retaliatory tariffs in Europe and China have cost Polaris more than $30m. Harley hasn’t specified the cost.

As a response, both companies are building more motorcycles overseas.

Harley kept a lid on prices in Europe despite the tariff rises, but say their new Thailand plant will lower pricing in “certain international markets”.

Given Australia’s free trade agreement with Thailand and our proximity to South East Asia, we could expect motorcycles and/or parts to come from there. Could we also expect lower prices?

Polaris increased prices in “some markets”, mainly Europe, not in Australia. They are also “accelerating European motorcycle production in Poland”.

2019 and beyond

While Indian has the FTR 1200 coming in the next month or so, plus possibly Renegade and Raven models later this year, Harley is banking on new customers for electric bikes.

The LiveWire electric sports bike launches in the USA and Europe in August this year at almost $US30,000. When it arrives in Australia in 20120, it may cost more than $A40,000.

If that is any indication, their electric bicycle and scooter will also be quite expensive.

Harley say their goal with these electric vehicles is to attract new riders.

They also point out that these products will not require a motorcycle licence. That’s important because the increasing and prolonged process of obtaining a motorcycle licence is one of the main reasons millennials are not riding.

Harley have been on a big push over the past year to teach more people to ride through their Riding Academy and claim to have licensed more than 52,000 new riders in the USA.

Over the weekend, Harley also unveiled some more details about their electric bicycle and scooter which are coming in the next couple of years.

Interestingly, the battery design is intended to be removable.

It will enable owners to carry the battery in one hand “to an apartment or office space to charge using a charging dock that plugs into any standard household power outlet”.

This is not a feature of the upcoming LiveWire. However, it may be a feature in other electric motorcycles from the Milwaukee brand.

Harley boldly proclaimed they will “lead the electrification of motorcycling”.

“These two new concepts are manifestations of that vision, and alongside the production 2020 LiveWire motorcycle, point to a broad portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed to establish the company as the leader in the electrification of mobility over the next several years and inspire new riders with new ways to ride,” the company says.

Indian Motorcycle trademarks Renegade name

Indian Motorcycle last month trademarked the name Raven and now they have added the name Renegade pointing to a possible model assault.

There are no details further available from Indian Motorcycle, so we can only speculate about the new models.

A Renegade is “a person who deserts and betrays an organisation, country, or set of principles”, so it could be a whole new model.

Jeep has a Renegade model, so maybe the Indian Renegade will have similar all-road capabilities like a trendy scrambler.

Or perhaps it’s a smaller capacity bike for young rebels.

That would fit into our Learner-Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) and be a huge leg up for Indian Motorcycle Australia as the learner sector continues to thrive in a slow market.

Renegade could also be a variation of the FTR 1200 which arrives in the next couple of months.

However, they already have the base model, S and S Race-Replica.

This week Indian Motorcycle announced a $1000 increase in price on the S race replica which now includes the titanium Akrapovic exhaust as standard.

Ride away prices for the FTR 1200 are now:

  • FTR 1200 (Thunder Black) from $19,995;
  • FTR 1200 S (Indian Motorcycle Red over Steel Gray, Titanium Metallic over Thunder Black Pearl) from $22,995;
  • FTR 1200 S Race-Replica from $24,995.

Raven name

Meanwhile, we believe the Raven could be a blacked version of the FTR 1200.

Indian already uses “Dark Horse” for blacked-out versions of their Chief, Springfield and Roadmaster models.

However, Raven could be a useful name to differentiate blacked-out versions of their FTR 1200 street tracker and Scout models from their cruisers/tourers.

Either way, it looks like being another big year for Indian Motorcycle which last year recorded 8.7% sales growth.

This was the highest growth rate of any motorcycle companies in Australia and one of only three to record any growth.

Motorbikes you most want to ride in 2019

The Indian FTR 1200 is the motorcycle that most excited our readers in 2018 and tops our poll of the 2019 models you and we would most like to ride this year.

Throughout the year we have unveiled the many new models that are expected to be released in 2019.

There is a host of new models from just about every manufacturer.

But the model that continually rated the highest in our readership figures was the Indian FTR 1200.

It arrives here this year in several models starting at under $20,000.

Some of the reader interest in the bike was negative after the production model revealed a less aggressive pipe than the prototype.

Even before its release, Indian Motorcycle has announced a host of accessories to customise the bike for touring, flat tracking and rallying.

Electric shock

The next bike to arouse reader interest was a bit of a shock … the Harley-Davidson electric LiveWire.

While the bike will be unveiled next year and we hope to ride it again in September in the USA, it will not be available in Australia until 2020.

If our ride on the initial model in 2014 is any gauge, riders will be in for a real treat on a motorcycle with instant torque and fast acceleration.

Royal twins and more

At the other end of the scale is the Royal Enfield 650cc twins. 

The Interceptor INT naked and Continental GT cafe racer arrive in February starting at $8440.

A motorcycle that has sparked interest for the past couple of years is the long-awaited Yamaha Tenere 700.

It arrives late this year in Australia after being unveiled as the T7 Prototype a couple of years ago.

There is also a lot of interest for the Moto Guzzi V85 TT which arrives mid-year. 

It looks like having good off-road ability, but it’s just beautiful to get dirty!

One bike which sparked a lot of interest — both positive and negative — is the return of the venerable Suzuki Katana brand.

Some love the new shape, while diehard fans of the old model say it is an abomination.

There is certainly a lot of interest already and Suzuki Australia says they are already taking $1000 deposits for the bike even though it doesn’t arrive until the third quarter this year and price is not yet known. 

Triumph always rates high among our readers, but the model that piqued most interest was the 1200 Scrambler.

We have known it is coming ever since they unveiled the new liquid-cooled models in 2015.

Indian Motorcycle trademarks Raven name

Indian Motorcycle has trademarked the name Raven which could be a whole new model or simply a black version of an existing model.

There are no details available from Indian Motorcycle, so the rumour mill has gone into overdrive about what the name could mean.

Indian already has the name Dark Horse for blacked-out versions of their Chief and Roadmaster models.

So it could be the name for blacked-out Scouts or the much-anticipated FTR 1200.

However, the trademark filing in the European Union Intellectual Property Office and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is for “Indian Raven”.

It’s not Indian Scout/Chieftain/Roadmaster Raven.

So it could be a whole new model.

One of the other rumours doing the rounds is that it could be an adventure bike like Harley’s forthcoming Pan America.

But the name doesn’t really sound very adventurous to us.

Some say it sounds more like a sporty version, most likely the upcoming FTR 1200.

But they already have the S version, a race replica coming and accessory packs to customise the bike. How much sportier could they get?

A trademark filing is still a long way from a production model.

Harley filed for the named Pan America last year and this year announced the bike will be coming in 2020.

Free software upgrade and app for Indian

Indian Motorcycle has one of the best audio and infotainment systems on a motorcycle and it has just got better with a free software upgrade and phone app.

The new software will allow riders to plan their trip on their desktop computer with up to 100 waypoints then send it remotely to their bike’s infotainment system.

It will also allow riders to share their planned or completed rides on Facebook.

The app can be downloaded for free in the Apple Store and Google Play.

Ride Command is available on the current and 2019 Chieftain and Roadmaster models. It will also be available on the FTR 1200 S when it is released next year.

New models will come with the software upgrade already installed.

Owners can update their current system at their local dealership or by downloading the software to a USB drive at the Ride Command Page then plugging into their bike’s system.Indian ride command software upgrade

The page also acts as a platform for riders to plan and share rides. Currently it is an American page, but Indian Motorcycle Australia spokesman Chris Gale says they are working on developing the app and website for Aussie riders.

“The new app has been developed in North America and some of the website/app information and functionality is only available in that region,” web says.

“We are working to localise the app for the Australian market.” 

Meanwhile, Australian riders can still use the app to download software updates, plan and track rides then download them onto their Indian Motorcycle.

Owners can also upgrade their Ride Command system by downloading the free 2018 map updates on the Ride Command Page or at their dealer.

Indian’s Ride Command system has a 7-inch touchscreen that is glove sensitive. We’ve tested it with thick winter gloves and it works perfectly, including the pinch-and-pull motion to zoom in and out like on a smartphone.

The system has a split screen so you can display a host of different information art the same time, or you can toggle through screens that show navigation, vehicle data, audio entertainment and phone call information.

Vehicle data includes fuel, oil, tyre pressure, battery charge and service reminders. American riders using the app can also now log their maintenance. The app has not yet been adapted for Australian use.

Indian FTR 1200 adds accessories packs

Even before the Indian FTR 1200 arrives there is already a host of accessories available for the bike including two types of Akrapovic slip-on titanium and stainless steel mufflers.

These accessories should help defray some of the criticism of the exhaust and plump seat. It may also thwart some of the aftermarket suppliers from producing their own accessories.

The four accessory packs are labelled Tracker, Rally, Sport, and Tour, two of which have high-mount Akrapovic exhausts similar to the FTR1200 Custom concept which was universally praised.

Indian Motorcycle Australia spokesman Peter Harvey says the parts are all individually available “to allow riders to build the bike in the style they prefer”. 

There is no discount pricing for buying the parts as a whole pack.

Touring range will be limited by the 13-litre fuel tank, but these accessories should make the ride more comfortable.
