Ducati adds folding electric bicycles

A week after Ducati unveiled their second electric bicycle, the e-Scrambler, they have added three folding e-bikes showing they are now serious about electric power.

There is still no word on an electric motorcycle.

However, their move in this direction will give them vital technical expertise that they can apply to a full-size electric motorcycle.

There is no word yet on how much the SCR-E, SCR-E Sport and Urban-E folding bicycles will cost.

The e-Scrambler will cost €3699 ($A6065) while their first e-mountain bike, the MIG-RR launched in October 2018 costs €6255 ($A10,255).

Last week, Ducati Australia confirmed they would begin importing those two bikes next year, so we presume the folding bikes will also be coming.

Like the e-Scrambler, this bike trades on the popular Scrambler brand and features fat 20” x 4” wheels.

It has a 374.4Wh battery integrated into the aluminium frame with range of 70km if you don’t pedal. More if you!

Of course, the most interesting aspect of all these bikes is that they easily fold uop s you can ack them in your car or take them up the lift and into your office.

This model has full suspension with a front fork and rear spring shock integrated in the frame.  The 468Wh battery has range of up to 80 km.

The Urban-E comes in black or grey and was created by the designers of the Centro Stile Ducati in collaboration with Italdesign’s Industrial Design division.

The handlebar has a fully integrated LCD display in the stem that allows the rider to control all the assistance functions, to check the remaining battery charge and to switch the LED lights integrated in the frame on and off.

The 378Wh battery is integrated into the frame.

It features a suspension fork,  fat 20″ x 4″ tyres with Kevlar anti-puncture technology mounted on double-wall aluminium rims.

This model doesn’t fold.

It features a 250-Watt Shimano Steps E7000 motor with 504Wh battery, Pirelli Cycl-e GT tyres, Sram NX 11-speed gearbox and Sram 4-piston brakes.

There is also a set of accessories including luggage racks, mudguards, stand and signal lights.

Booming sector

Ducati’s move into e-bikes is designed to plug into the booming market in Europe where sales have boomed from about 500,000 to almost 3m in the past decade.

BMW, Harley-Davidson and other motorcycle and car manufacturers now have e-bikes available in Europe and the USA.

More importantly, how long do we have to wait for an electric Ducati motorcycle?

In 2017, VW Group Chairman Matthias Mueller and Ducati Western Europe manager Edouard Lotthe said the company would have an electric motorcycle and scooter by 2020.

Well, that didn’t happen!

In 2017, Ducati licensed the Milano Scuola Politecnica di Design (Design Polytechnic School) to produce the Ducati Zero futuristic design concept.

And in 2015, an electric pedal-assisted moped was made under licence and painted in the Ducati Scrambler Urban Enduro colours. 

Neither were real Ducatis.

Nor is the embarrassing Chinese-made, Ducati-branded, Aussie-imported electric Super Soco scooter!

Meanwhile Ducati has filed documents with the US Environmental Protection Agency that show upcoming models:Ducati Diavel Lamborghini, together with the Ducati Multistrada Enduro Grand Tour and the Ducati Scrambler 1100 PRO Dark.

Ducati is owned by the VW Group which includes Lambo, so the Lambo model will likely be a limited edition with special paintwork, graphics and some extra standard features. The Multi will probably have a lot of extra features and maybe standard luggage. And the Dark will simply be matte black.

Ducati e-Scrambler joins electric bicycle range

Ducati is adding an e-Scrambler urban electric bicycle to its small, but growing nascent range of e-bikes.

The e-Scrambler joins their first e-mountain bike, MIG-RR, which was launched in October 2018.

Ducati says the e-Scrambler is “urban ready” with an aluminium frame and high-end components.

It features a 250-Watt Shimano Steps E7000 motor with 504Wh battery, Pirelli Cycl-e GT tyres, Sram NX 11-speed gearbox and Sram 4-piston brakes.

Their press release says:

The low centre of gravity and the geometry of the frame allow the e-Scrambler to offer the same riding sensations as a traditional bike, making it in fact the ideal companion for the city or to enjoy the country roads. The supplied telescopic seat post also increases comfort, allowing the rider to get on and off the saddle easily and guaranteeing safe support during stops.

There is also a set of accessories including luggage racks, mudguards, stand and signal lights.

Triumph launch Trekker GT e-bike

Triumph started in 1889 as a bicycle company and now they are returning to bicycles with an e-bike called the Trekker GT.

They are not the only motorcycle manufacturer looking to ebikes as a supplement to their motorcycle business.

Ducati and even Harley-Davidson are getting into the ebikes trend.

It all comes as some riders are calling for ebikes to be registered before they dominate bike lanes, chew up available parking space and lawless riders give all motorcycle and scooter riders a bad name.

The move to add ebikes also comes as Triumph Motorcycle recently announced it would slash 400 jobs globally, blaming the pandemic for falling sales.

Triumph also made bicycles in the 1970s, but this is a modern pedal-assisted electric model with some hi-tech features such as digital instruments.

Cagiva online to return as electric

Since 2018, MV Agusta has been working on reviving the Cagiva name, but with an electric motor, and now new boss Timur Sardarov (pictured above) confirms it is still part of their plan.

“Cagiva production will resume next year, at the latest in early 2021, and will be dedicated to electric urban mobility,” he told Italian site Motociclismo.

The interview is unclear about what the electric vehicle will be: scooter, motorcycle, e-bike?

“But we will not make scooters, they will be motorcycles,” says Timur who took over from Giovanni Castiglioni last year.

Then he seems to contradict himself.

“Easy to drive and below 4kW, because at the moment no-one who produces beyond this threshold can generate profits.

“In six or seven years, it will probably be possible to reach the profit with vehicles equivalent to 350cc.”

When I met with MV Agusta boss Giovanni Castiglioni in July 2018, he talked about the electric Cagiva project and said he believed in the potential of electric bikes.

“There is a market for high-performing light bikes and that’s how the Cagiva electric bike project started,” he told me.

“From my pure personal experience, the torque, power and throttle response is great. You can have fun and you don’t scare the cows and the deers. It’s actually enjoyable.”

He said Cagiva electric bikes would start with 80km of range and reach 320km in the next five years with a range of bikes from commuters to off-road.

But he also said MV would not go into electric bikes because there is no market for high-performing electric street bikes.

“People think the electric bike is for losers and the reality is it is not.

“But at the moment, its potential is in cities for short-range commuting from home to the office or for short trips.

“We don’t yet live in a world where you can live with an electric car. I would like to buy a Tesla, but only for driving from home to the office. I travel a lot by car and I can’t start my journey by doing a flight plan like in a plane.

“The charging infrastructure needs to improve first.”

Harley-Davidson trademarks Rude Boy

Harley-Davidson trademarks often end up as names for their motorcycles, but in this case, Rude Boy will be used for their upcoming range of electric bicycles.

The company has struck some trouble with the recent launch of their LiveWire electric motorcycle:

  • The bike was delayed a month going into North America dealerships;
  • Several dealerships refused to pay big money to instal DC fast chargers in order to sell them;
  • Sales have also been a disaster as customers have baulked at the $US29,950 (about $A44,000 when it arrives in Australia late next year) ticket price; and
  • They temporarily pulled the plug on production to fix a problem with one charger.

Rude Boy electric bicycles

The company has filed its application for the Rude Boy trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office for use with “electric bicycles; electric bicycle parts and accessories”.

Harley already has a Fat Boy Softail motorcycle which has been a huge success over the years, so they will be hoping for the same with with Rude Boy.

So far Harley has shown three pedal-assisted electric bicycles, an electric scooter and electric balance bikes for kids.

Harley-Davidson future in electric bicycles?

The future looks electric for Harley-Davidson with their LiveWire electric motorcycle as well as three pedal-assisted electric bicycles, electric scooter and electric balance bikes for kids.

Harley-Davidson revealed their electric bicycle and electric scooter concepts at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.

Last month they launched their LiveWire which arrives in Australia next year at more than $A40,000.

Now they have introduced two electric balance bikes for kids and unveiled a photo of three prototype adult-sized pedal-assisted electric bicycles or “e-bikes” on their website.

With Harley sales down and an ageing demographic, the company is keen to bring in new, younger customers.

The balance bikes are aimed at introducing three-to-seven-year-olds to the bar and shield brand.

The aluminium-framed Irone12 has a seat height of 33cm, weighs just 7.7kg and costs $649 while the Irone16 has a 43cm seat, 8.6kg and costs $US699.

A Harley-Davidson Australia spokesperson says “at this point in time we don’t have any further information on Australian distribution”.

The BMX-style bikes are powered by 20Vmax lithium-ion batteries with up to 60 minutes of charge.

The electric hub motors have three speed-limited drive modes with top speeds of 8km/h-128km/h.

Earlier this year, Harley bought Californian children’s electric bicycle company StaCyc, which stands for “stability cycles”.

They began selling two StaCyc models branded with Harley logos, for the same price as these new balance bikes.

Should e-bikes be classed as motorcycles?

The real boom in electric vehicles is in pedal-assisted e-bikes which are being used as commuters. But are they bicycles or motorcycles?

The question is now being asked by legislators, bicycle and motorcycle industry representatives.

In fact, the Union Cycliste Internationale and FIM are fighting over who can race in cycling and motorised categories as the distinction between the two is becoming blurred.

We reckon they’re powered two-wheelers and as such should be included as motorcycles.

After all, early motorcycles were actually bicycles with an engine attached.

The pedals were either used to start the engine or to add some physical power to the weak engine output.

E-bikes boom

Motorcycle sales in Europe last year rose 7.2%, but it’s these electric bikes that are boosting the figures with a sales boom of a massive 49% in e-bikes.

Maybe our motorcycle industry figures wouldn’t look so bad if e-bikes were counted as motorcycles in the official sales figures.

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries motorcycle spokesman Rhys Griffiths says it’s an “interesting” suggestion.

With brands such as Harley-Davidson, BMW and Ducati launching e-bikes, maybe it’s time to include e-bikes not only in the official industry sales figures but also on motorcycle dealership showroom floors.

The Vallkree, imported and assembled by a Byron Bay company, looks like early 20th century board tracker motorcycles.

“I’ve only sold a couple in eight months as they are very niche,” he says.

“But they should be very popular with commuters, mums and dads, younger people and hipsters.”

They cost from $3300 for the model restricted to 24km/h to $3800 for the “off-road-use-only” model that can reach 40km/h.VALLKREE e-bike e-bikes

Unlike electric motorcycles and cars, e-bikes have unlimited range as you keep topping up the battery by pedalling.

For anyone who has ridden these e-bikes, they are a revelation. With minimal pedalling effort, you can easily cruise to work filtering through the traffic.

Licensing

However e-bikes present a licensing conundrum, according to emeritus professor of transport Marcus Wigan.

Currently (no pun intended), you can ride an e-bike with power up to 250W without a licence which makes it a “pedalec”.

Anything over 250W requires a motorcycle licence and the bike would be subject to Australian Design Rules with possible classification as a Learner Approved Motorcycle.

But we also get into what Marcus describes as a no-man’s land where it is neither a motorcycle nor a moped.

In Queensland and Western Australia, you can ride an e-bike with more than 250W on a car or RE licence.

But Marcus says it is easy to disguise a more powerful motor in an e-bike.

“It is an open secret that the aftermarket updating or fitment of more powerful motors is widespread as a direct result of the inadequacy of the licensing definition rammed through by bicycle interests,” Marcus says.

He believes e-bikes should be allowed up to 400W spec to appeal to more people and stop the “aftermarket black market”.

“The moment they tangle with the definition of an e-bike as motorcycle, there are problems with insurance, registration, ABS, linked brakes, etc that affect motorcycles.”

The growing number of powerful e-bikes will further blur the line between what is a bicycle and what is a powered two-wheeler.

It will also attract a lot more riders who will create a powerful political lobby group.

Wouldn’t we rather have them on our side than the cycling lobby?

Then governments might pay more attention to our needs for parking, rule exemptions, free tolls, etc.

Harley to sell children’s electric bicycles

Harley-Davidson wants children riding electric “Harley-Davidson” bicycles so they become “the next generation” of riders. They hope to achieve this by selling electric bicycles through selected US dealerships.

The move follows their acquisition, for an undisclosed amount, of Californian children’s electric bicycle company StaCyc, which stands for “stability cycles”.

StaCyc will continue to sell their bikes in the US through powersports dealerships, including 29 Harley-Davidson dealerships, as well as online and in specialty bicycle shops.StaCyc electric bicycle

However, from the third quarter of this year, selected US Harley dealerships will sell the electric bicycles rebranded as Harleys.

Harley-Davidson Australia has not advised whether the bikes will be sold here.

StaCyc started in 2016 and has a range of 12-and 16-inch-wheel electric EDRIVE bikes priced from $US649 ($A915) to $US699 ($A985).

There is no word on whether they will cost more when rebranded as Harley-Davidsons.

Electric portfolio

Harley say the acquisition expands their electric portfolio and reinforces their “commitment to lead in the electrification of motorcycling”.

They will release their first electric motorcycle, the LiveWire, this August in the US at $US29,790 and in Australia next year for more than $A40,000.

Harley also plan a range of e-bikes (pedal-assisted electric bicycles) and scooters in the next couple of years.

In March 2018, the Milwaukee brand acquired a stake in electric dirt-bike company Alta Motors, but later relinquished it after gaining key technology on batteries and electric motors.

Instead, they invested in their own R&D centre in Silicon Valley for electric vehicle research.

Alta Motors went bust in October and Canadian company BRP, which makes the Can-Am Spyder, has now bought a selection of its assets, including intellectual property, patents and some physical assets.

Perhaps Harley will also gain some technical know-how from StaCyc as it did in the short-lived Alta Motors deal.

However, the StaCyc acquisition seems to be more about building brand loyalty from young cyclists in the hope they will become Harley motorcyclists.

“We’ve said previously that we believe electric vehicles are where global mobility is headed and they hold great appeal for existing riders as well as opportunity to build new riders,” Heather says.

“As we lead in the electrification of motorcycling, we’re demonstrating our commitment by delivering a full range of electric products for a vast audience who will be inspired to imagine and discover what is possible from Harley-Davidson.”

The electric bicycle and scooter concepts were revealed in July last year as artwork when Harley announced its bold new plans for the next four years.

Those bold plans included an adventure bike and a new family of liquid-cooled models.

Now, the company has revealed working concepts models of the bicycle and scooter to “explore the potential of urban mobility and two-wheeled adoption”.

The concepts are part of the company’s planned “broad portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed to establish the company as the leader in the electrification of mobility over the next several years and inspire new riders with new ways to ride”.

There are no names nor specs for the electric bicycle and scooter as they are only prototypes.
