Ducati Diavel 1260 Lamborghini limited to only 630 units

Ducati Diavel 1260 Lamborghini

Ducati have taken the covers off a new special-edition Diavel overnight inspired by the 819 horsepower Lamborghini Siàn FKP 37, meet the the Ducati Diavel 1260 Lamborghini.

A. Ferraresi, Director Centro Stile Ducati; M. Borkert, Head of Design Automobili Lamborghini

Due to arrive in Australia next February (2021), the Diavel 1260 Lamborghini will wear a ride away sticker price that says $48,600. The car? Well that will cost you over $5,000,000, yep that number of zeroes is correct, a cool five-million….

$48,600 to ride this baby home

It is unclear as to how many of the 630 Diavel 1260 Lamborghini machines produced will find their way Down Under but I don’t think there will be a shortage of takers. Only 63 of the Countach inspired Lamborghini Lamborghini Siàn FKP 37 were made and no doubt plenty of those owners will want the Ducati to go with their car. Why 63? Well Lamborghini was founded in 1963, so that seems like a good enough reason, apparently…

Ducati Diavel 1260 Lamborghini

Diavel 1260 Lamborghini wears bespoke forged rims that resemble the design seen on the Lamborghini and has the ‘Gea Green’ duco to match it.

Ducati Diavel 1260 Lamborghini

The frame, the seat tail and the forged rims are embellished with the use of ‘Electrum Gold’ colour. There is also a touch of ‘Ducati Red’ sued in the colouring of the Brembo M50 radial mount brake calipers.

Carbon-fibre is used liberarally alongside the ‘Gea Green’ duco

There is also plenty of sexy clear-coated carbon-fibre. The radiator covers and air intakes, the silencer cover, spoiler, central tank cover, seat cover, front and rear mudguards, dashboard cover and headlight frame are all made of carbon.

Logos of the two brands appear on the dashboard with the TFT screen, accompanied by the silhouette of the Diavel Lamborghini.

The beating heart of the Diavel 1260 Lamborghini is the 1262 cc Ducati Testastretta DVT with variable timing. This Euro 5 homologated engine is capable of delivering 162 hp (119 kW) at 9,500 rpm and 129 Nm (13,2 kgm) at 7,500 rpm.  Dry weight is 220 kg.

Ducati Panigale V4 SP | 1103 cc | Dry clutch | Ohlins | Carbon rims

2021 Ducati Panigale V4 SP

Ducati have brought the ‘SP’ nomenclature to the Panigale V4 family for model year 2021.

Ducati expands the Panigale V4 family by introducing the numbered Panigale V4 SP version

The SP (Sport Production) moniker first saw the light of day on the 851 in the early years of the World Superbike Championship when Raymond Roche wrestled the WorldSBK Championship title off Honda’s Fred Merkel in 1990. Doug Polen then won the 1991 and 1992 Championships on the 888 SP.    Then of course we had the delectable 916 ‘SP’ followed by the ‘SPS’. A couple of Aussies both named Troy did alright on those bikes…

“Winter Test” livery that characterizes the bike is inspired by that of the Ducati Corse bikes used in the pre-season tests of the MotoGP and SBK Championships

The R designation was then introduced as the pinnacle of the 996 range, of which only 500 were built. Since then the R model has long been established as the top of the Ducati performance tree until the advent of the hyper exclusive Superleggera models with the carbon-fibre framed 1299 Superleggera in 2017, which was then followed by the 234 horsepower and 152 kg Superleggera V4 this year.

Panigale V4 SP also stands out for being equipped with contents derived from the Superleggera V4, such as the lightweight 5-spoke carbon wheels, the exclusive Brembo Stylema R® front brake calipers and the Brembo front brake pump with MCS (Multiple Click System)

But enough of the history lesson, let’s get back to the future…

While the V4 R and Superleggera V4 use the 998 cc version of the Stradale 90-degree V-Four the new Panigale V4 SP shares the same long stroke 1103 cc capacity as the rest of the regular V4 range and produces an identical 214 horsepower and 124 Nm in the new Euro5 specification for model year 2021. The SP though does get an STM-EVO dry clutch to differentiate it from the other models.

Desmosedici Stradale engine of the “SP” is equipped with a dry clutch

The rest of the primary differences between the V4 S and the V4 SP are external to the engine.

A special livery and numbered steering head machined from billet and a carbon front guard.  The matt black paint scheme is what Ducati refer to as ‘Winter Test’, to resemble the sometimes plain livery used by prototype race bikes when being tested between seasons.

Steering head machined from billet with the progressive number of the bike shown

The rolling stock also has some changes with the same light five-spoke carbon rims along with top shelf Brembo Stylema R calipers and the MCS master cylinder as used on the Superleggera.

Five split-spoke rims made of high-strength carbon fibre and have aluminium hubs screwed to the composite structure. Both allow a weight saving of 1.4 kg compared to the forged aluminium wheels of the Panigale V4 S, which rises to 3.4 kg compared to the aluminium wheels of the Panigale V4

Billet anodised aluminium adjustable pegs are shrouded by carbon heel-guards and special articulated brake and shift levers to help reduce the risk of breakage in a spill.

Adjustable rider footpegs in billet aluminium with carbon heel guards

Underlining the SP as the choice of the trackday warriors are the mirror and licence plate housing blanking plates that are supplied with the bike along with the GPS driven Ducati Data Analyser + (DDA +) kit.

Ducati Data Analyzer + (DDA +) kit with GPS module (supplied)

The DDA+ system stores vehicle usage parameters such as trajectories, RPM, gear, throttle opening angle, engine rpm, front brake pressure, DTC etc. and geolocates them on the route. Once disconnected from the bike and inserted into the USB port of the computer, the software allows you to load the different channels acquired and to analyse your performance on the track.

Brembo 330 mm discs at the front combined with the new Brembo Stylema R monobloc calipers

Like the $40,490 Panigale V4 S, the SP version is also equipped with an Öhlins NIX-30 fork, Öhlins TTX36 rear shock absorber and Öhlins steering damper controlled by the second generation Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 system.

Öhlins NIX-30 fork, Öhlins TTX36 rear shock absorber and Öhlins steering damper

The main advantages offered by this system concern the possibility offered to the rider to customise the intensity of intervention on the suspension according to individual riding phases (braking, cornering, acceleration), to modify the operating parameters of the single hardware components. In addition, they allow the rider to have a softer basic setting and therefore easier and less demanding than that of traditional suspensions, stiffening instantly only when necessary.

2021 Ducati Supersport 950 reveal

2021 Ducati Supersport 950

The Panigale V2 was comprehensively updated for 2020 model year but for 2021 it is the more affordable road biased Supersport model that has received the most attention.

Supersport 950 will be available in Australia from May, 2021, starting from $19,390 Ride Away while the S model will sell from $21,850 Ride Away

It also has grown a ‘950’ suffix to its name with the model now being referred to by Ducati as Supersport 950.  Personally, I would have liked to the see ‘SS’ name plate brought back in to use.

The side view of the SuperSport 950 is marked by air vents reminiscent of the double extractor of the Panigale V4 models. The lower fairing now extends to the side silencer, hiding the mechanical components

Does this new capacity suffix to the name suggest that they might soon unveil new Supersport machines with different capacity engines and expand the Supersport mode range…?  I would say that is a fairly safe bet, but we are yet to be told whether that will happen in 2021 or further down the track.

The front view is dominated by the new full-LED headlamp with daylight DRL, which clearly recalls the light signature of the Panigale V4. The headlamp is completed by two bi-function LED modules for low beam and high beam that create a symmetrical look when the lights are on.

While the Panigale V2 is the track focussed twin-cylinder option in the Ducati range with 155 horsepower in its latest Euro5 guise and a dry weight of 176 kg, along with racer style ergonomics, the Supersport 950 is a slightly more relaxed steed with 110 horsepower and tips the scales at 184 kg.

The oil bath clutch is now activated by the new hydraulic control with self-bleeding radial pump equipped with an adjustable lever.

The engines are not just in a different state of tune but have completely different architecture. The Panigale V2 is powered by the 955 cc ‘Superquadro’ powerplant while the Supersport 950 uses the ‘Testastretta 11-degree’ engine that displaces 937 cc.  While the peak numbers are lower in the Supersport they also arrive at them much sooner, the Panigale V2 torque of 104 Nm peaks at 9000 rpm while the Supersport 950 makes its 93 Nm at 6500 rpm.  80 per cent of that maximum twist is available from as low as 3500 rpm.

937 cc Testastretta 11° engine with 110 hp at 9,000 rpm and 93 Nm at 6,500 rpm

Clearly the Supersport is going to be the more practical option for the road but it’s still certainly no slouch and the riding position is still quite sporting. Ground clearance is not at Panigale levels though with Ducati stating that the Supersport offers lean angles up to 48-degrees.

Ground clearance is not up to Panigale levels but still pretty generous

Different strokes for different folks and all that…

Seat height is 810 mm with an optional lower 790 mm seat also available. Ducati promise both perches have had plenty of attention lavished on them and offer all-day riding potential. If you want softer again you can option a seat with another 25 mm of padding, which of course would similarly raise the seat height.

Ducati promise the seat is up to all-day riding. Here the Supersport S is pictured with the pillion seat cowl in place

The screen has two positions that are 50 mm apart to help cater for riders of different heights.

Plexiglas adjustable in height in two positions with a range of 50 mm

Ducati are even offering 25-litre factory semi-rigid pannier bags for the Supersport 950 and they do not detract from the looks of the machine at all.

Semi-rigid side bags of 25 litres + 25 litres with inserts in the colour of the bike

The SuperSport 950 is equipped with electronic controls based on information from Bosch’s 6-axis inertial platform, capable of instantly detecting the bike’s roll, yaw, and pitch angles in space. The electronic package consists of: Bosch Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control (DTC) EVO, Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) up / down EVO available on all versions, and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) EVO, a new feature on this model that characterises its sporting nature.

Brembo front brake system with two 320 mm discs and M4.32 calipers

The electronic settings are adjusted via the menu of the new 4.3” full-TFT display with graphics and interface, inspired by that of the Panigale family.

SuperSport 950 is equipped with three Riding Modes, called Sport, Touring and Urban. Each of these acts on the electronic Ride-by-Wire system, modifying power and delivery, on the intervention levels of Bosch ABS, DTC, DWC and on the activation of the DQS up / down.

The SuperSport 950 also relies on the latest evolution of the Ducati trellis frame, which uses the engine as a load-bearing element, combined with a single-sided aluminium swingarm.

The main steel trellis is connected to the cylinder heads, while the rear seat post subframe, also in steel, is fixed to that of the vertical cylinder.

Up front we see fully-adjustable 43 mm Marzocchi forks in combination with an adjustable Sachs rear shock.

The S model gets Ohlins

The Brembo brake system consists of M4-32 monobloc radial calipers that act on two 320 mm diameter discs, operated by a self-bleeding radial pump with separate reservoir and adjustable lever.

Single-sided swingarm

The SuperSport 950 range also includes the 950 S version which is equipped with fully adjustable Öhlins suspension and rear seat cowl. The only other difference is a Ducati Red ‘Tag’ on the rims.

The Supersport 950 will be available in Australia from May, 2021, starting from $19,390 Ride Away while the S model will sell from $21,850 Ride Away.  Maintenance intervals are every 15,000 km, or 12 months, with valve clearance checks every 30,000 km.

XDiavel Dark and XDiavel Black Star added to 2021 Ducati range

2021 Ducati XDiavel

Australia will receive the new and more powerful Euro5 specification Testastretta DVT 1262 engine in the 2021 XDiavel range, encompassing the new XDiavel Dark in the Dark Stealth colour scheme for $29,390 Ride-Away and new XDiavel Black Star in unique livery for $37,590 R/A.

2021 Ducati XDiavel Black Star

A XDiavel S will be available in Black for $36,100 Ride-Away, offering a higher spec option over the Dark, including beefier front brakes, special wheels and Ducati Multimedia System as standard, just to name a few . Arrival of all three models is expected in Australia and New Zealand during the first half of 2021.

2021 Ducati XDiavel S

On the XDiavel Dark the total black livery includes matt black paint has been extended to the mechanical components, plates, and finishes. The new XDiavel Black Star version in comparison features livery and equipment inspired by the world of sports cars, according to Ducati…. The dedicated livery alternates grey and matt black with touches of red.

Australians will get the new 160 hp version of the Testastretta, producing 127 Nm of torque, where some markets are left with the previous generation 152 hp version. Our models meet the Euro5 specification with claims of a smoother power delivery along with the new exhaust silencer layout.

2021 Ducati XDiavel Black Star

Bore and stroke remains unchanged at 106 x 71.5 mm, with compression run at 13:1 while fuel is fed via 56 mm elliptical throttle bodies and a Ride-by-Wire system and slipper and self servo clutch used.

The XDiavel is equipped with an extensive electronics package, with a Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) which dynamically measures the roll and pitch angles as well as the speed of the relative set-up variations, providing that information to the Bosch Cornering ABS, alongside a host of rider aids including Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Riding Modes, Cruise Control and Ducati Power Launch (DPL).

2021 Ducati XDiavel Black Star

On the XDiavel Black Star rims are forged units, entirely machined and painted in gloss black, which enhance the aesthetics of the bike and lightens it, resulting in a weight saving of over 2 kg. At the front end, the bike sports a 3.50 x 17in wheel, at the rear it is a massive 8.00 x 17in. The front wheel mounts a traditional 120/70 ZR17 tyre with a tread redesigned to maximise wet weather performance. The rear tyre is a 240/45 ZR17 and all XDiavel models come with new Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tyres.  In comparison the XDiavel Dark runs light alloy wheels in the same sizes, while the XDiavel S runs cast and machined light alloy units.

The XDiavel offers adjustable 50mm USD forks, which benefit from a DLC treatment on both the S and Black Star models, with a preload and rebound adjustable rear shock mated to the single-sided swingarm.

2021 Ducati XDiavel Black Star

Brakes are an impressive set of radially mounted M50 Brembo four-piston monobloc calipers on the S and Black Star, grasping 320 mm semi-floating rotors and boasting a PR16/19 radial master-cylinder. In comparison the XDiavel Dark uses M4.32 Brembo four-piston monobloc calipers and a PR18/19 radial master-cylinder. All models run the same 265 mm rear rotor with Brembo two-piston caliper.

A 3.5 in colour TFT display is also run, with backlit handlebar switches and full LED lighting all round. Both the S and Black Star versions also include Daytime Running Lights (DRL), as well as the Ducati Multimedia System and Bluetooth module for the infotainment system.

2021 Ducati XDiavel S

Features specific to the 2021 XDiavel Black Star include the aforementioned rims, gloss black engine with matt black aluminium belt covers, rear view mirrors in billet aluminium, seat with dedicated upholstery and forged and anodised side frame plates with visible machining.

The 2021 XDiavel Dark no longer receives the backrest and passenger comfort seat as standard fitment, however they continue to be available as optional accessories from the Ducati Performance range.

2021 Ducati XDiavel Dark

The 2021 XDiavel S features machine-finished forged lateral frame plates and footpeg supports, alongside a natural brushed-effect anodised swingarm, while the wheels are 12-spoke machine-finished, with a gloss black engine, machine-finished aluminium belt covers and rear view mirrors in billet aluminium.

Nightshift model joins 2021 Ducati Scrambler range

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

For model year 2021 Ducati have added a new ‘Nightshift’ model to their 800 Scrambler range.

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

Cafe racer mirrors mount on straight bars while the number plate hangs off a swingarm mount that hopefully will pass ADR and make an appearance on Australian delivered machines.

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

Those upright bars force an upright riding position which combines with the flat seat to make the stance of the motorcycle look low and aggressive.

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

Seat height is a low 798 mm while dry weight is 180 kg.

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

Spoked rims, 18-inch at the front and 17-inch at the rear, are shod with chunky Pirelli MT60 rubber which accentuates the look of the ‘Aviator Grey’ machine.

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

Perhaps the whole ‘Land of Joy’ line that Ducati use to market the Scrambler line-up globally sounds great in Italian, but it certainly doesn’t translate well to Australian….

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

The Nightshift model effectively combines the attributes of the Full Throttle and Cafe Racer variants of the Scrambler that will no longer be available in 2021.  Nightshift will sell alongside updated Desert Sled and Icon models with the 2021 Scrambler range due to arrive at some point in the first half of 2021.  Nightshift will be priced at $18,000 Ride Away.

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

The now customary Scrambler headlight features a glass lens along with an LED DRL face.

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

The LCD instrument panel is quite small but still packs in a gear position indicator and fuel gauge.

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

Ducati also state that the display is Ducati Multimedia System ready while a USB socket is located in an underseat compartment.

2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift

Scrambler Nightshift is powered by the same specification 803 cc L-Twin that is utilised across the 800 range.  It musters 73 horsepower at 8250 rpm while 66 Nm of torque is quoted at 5750 rpm.

Ducati Multistrada V4 range revealed | Australian Pricing

Ducati Multistrada V4

Ducati took the covers of the new 1158 cc Granturismo V4 engine a few weeks and overnight Bologna unveiled the new versatile fourth generation Multistrada platform that will be powered by the new 170 horsepower powerplant. Check out our feature on the Granturismo V4 engine here (opens new window).

Ducati Multistrada V4 S

There are three variations in the V4 Multistrada family, the 215 kg (dry) Multistrada V4 with conventional Marzocchi fully-adjustable suspension while both the Multistrada V4 S and V4 S Sport ride on Ducati Skyhook electronic suspension which for the first time now includes an automatic levelling function which automatically sets the required sag after sensing the load onboard. The load capacity of the motorcycle is a generous 230 kilograms.

2021 Ducati Multistrada V4 range

Ducati have broke new ground with a radar system with sensors at both ends of the motorcycle which allows the introduction of radar assisted Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection. Cornering lights also make an appearance as does Hill Hold Control.

Ducati Multistrada V4 S

An updated mineral glass 6.5-inch TFT display on the S models includes a Ducati Connect system that includes Bluetooth and wi-fi which allows the mirroring of some phone functions.

The base Multistrada V4 has a five-inch display and misses out on the extra phone functionality but still allows for multimedia control.

Sygic navigation app and all the various suspension and rider aid settings are controlled via the display

On the S models a joy-stick on the left switch-block aids navigation through the interfaces, including that of the Sygic navigation app and all the various suspension and rider aid settings.

The switch-gear is back-lit and a pocket in the tank can hold your mobile phone and power it via the integrated USB socket located inside the pocket. A 12-volt power outlet for charging other accessories is provided in the right side of the dash.

The Multistrada V4 range features the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), which includes Brembo braking system with Bosch 10.3ME Cornering ABS, adjustable on three levels. Cornering ABS makes use of the Bosch IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) platform, which communicates in real time data concerning lean angles.

Ducati Multistrada V4 S models get up-spec Stylema set-up

Multistrada V4 makes use of a powerful radial monobloc Brembo combined braking system that is optimised for the Urban and Touring Riding Modes but has a lower degree of interaction in Sport Mode where combined braking is less desirable. The combined braking system increases stability by using four pressure detectors to allocate braking power optimally between front and rear. 320 mm rotors grace the front end of the base model while S models get the top shelf 330 mm Brembo Stylema set-up.

Ducati Multistrada V4 S

All models ride on a 19-inch front to help provide stability off-road in combination with a 17-inch rear. Tyre pressure monitoring is optional as are spoked rims. .

Ducati Multistrada V4 S

The Multistrada V4 is equipped with an aluminium monocoque frame and double-sided swing arm. It has a reduced wheelbase (1,567 mm), sporty front end geometry (24.5-degree rake) and a generous 170 mm of suspension travel up front and 180 mm at the rear. Ground clearance is an impressive 220 mm. Chain final drive is retained.

Ducati Multistrada V4 S with Enduro Pack

The standard seat is adjustable between 840 and 860 mm while an optional extra low 810 mm seat is available as an option, as is a high 875 mm perch.

Ducati Multistrada V4

Ducati stated that they have worked on air-flow and comfort for the rider with the screen adjustable with only one finger and combining side deflectors for more protection from the elements.

Ducati Multistrada V4 S with Enduro Pack

As previously Ducati will offer various accessory packs at point of sale such as the Enduro pack complete with supplementary LED lights, radiator and engine lower and side guards. The Touring pack adds panniers, heated grips and a centre-stand while the Urban pack adds a top case, tank bag and USB hub.

Ducati Multistrada V4 S

As far as we can ascertain the only real difference between the S and the S Sport is that the Sport model gains an Akrapovic muffler and a carbon front guard as standard along with Tricolore duco, the Akra muffler and carbon guard can be added on the other two models via the Performance pack.

Ducati Multistrada V4 S

The V4 Granturismo also ushers in a new lower cost servicing regimen with oil changes only required every 15,000 km intervals, while the valve clearances only need checking every 60,000 kilometres. A 22-litre fuel tank should ensure touring ranges of up to 400 kilometres.

Ducati Multistrada V4 S

Australian delivery is expected in the first quarter of 2021. Pricing has been set as follows.

2021 Ducati Multistrada V4

  • Multistrada V4 – From $28,990 Ride Away

2021 Ducati Streetfighter V4 Update | Dark Stealth option

2021 Ducati Streetfighter V4 Updates

Ducati have announced a new Dark Stealth colour scheme for the Streetfighter V4 S for 2021, which will join the more traditional Ducati Red option, as the full Streetfighter V4 range becomes Euro5, without any loss of performance. Other changes include new self bleeding front brake and clutch master-cylinders.

Ducati unveil a new colour option for the Streetfighter V4 S in 2021

The Streetfighter is based on the the Panigale V4, stripped of the fairings, with a high and wide handlebar, weighing 178 kg on the scale, and powered by 1100 cc Desmosedici Stradale offering 208 hp and kept in hand by biplane wings, alongside a complete electronic package. Dark Stealth is the matt black colour option aimed at offering a blacked out theme, a long running crowd favourite amongst motorcyclists.

The 2021 Streetfighter V4 S will be available in Dark Stealth

With the arrival of 2021, all the bikes in the Ducati Streetfighter V4 range become compliant with the Euro 5 anti-pollution regulations, maintaining maximum power and torque values unchanged, but repositioned at different engine speeds. The Streetfighter V4 Euro 5 will have a power output of 208 hp (153 kW) at 13,000 rpm (250 rpm higher than the EURO 4 version) and a torque of 123 Nm at 9,500 rpm (2,000 rpm lower than the EURO 4 version). These values have been obtained thanks to a new calibration and new exhaust system.

Despite being Euro5 compliant no performance has been lost

The silencer, unchanged from an aesthetic point of view, uses larger catalysts (+10 mm in length) and with a new technology of impregnation of noble metals, essential for maximising the ability to convert polluting gases. The lengths and dimensions of the exhaust primaries of the rear bank have also been optimised to minimise the ignition time of the catalytic converter, while maintaining engine performance unchanged.

Updates include to the exhaust and rear manifolds

Compared to the Euro 4 models, the manifolds of the rear bank have been shortened by 100 mm and reduced in diameter, going from 42 mm to 38 mm. The new component allowed the introduction of a more compact rear heat shield integrated into the body of the bike. With the aim of limiting emissions is the introduction of four lambda probes, one for each cylinder, which allow a more refined control of the amount of injected fuel.

Brake and clutch master-cylinders are also updated

All Streetfighter V4 models in the 2021 range are fitted with new front brake and clutch pumps, both self-bleeding and derived from those used for the first time on the Superleggera V4. The body of the new pumps has been designed with a configuration that allows a ‘natural’ bleeding, thus eliminating the need to intervene on the system in the event of air present in the circuit.

The Streetfighter V4 if fitted with winglets

The entire Streetfighter V4 range for 2021, including the Dark Stealth colour scheme for the “S” version, can now be ordered in Ducati dealers and will be available starting from November 2020, with Australian pricing of the Streetfighter V4 starting at $29,500 Ride-Away. New Ducati V4 Granturismo engine promises a leap forward for Multistrada

Ducati V4 Granturismo

Ducati have gone all-out overnight with a cavalcade of videos and information surrounding the launch of the new V4 Granturismo engine.

While the switch from the iconic L-Twin to V-Four power in their premium sportsbike flagship took place in 2018, their latest touring platforms, the Multistrada, has until now stayed faithful to Ducati’s twin cylinder roots and is currently powered by a 1262 cc DVT Testastretta engine producing 158 horsepower and 129 Nm.

The V-Four is 1.2 kg lighter than the DVT twin while also benefitting from being much more compact, it is 20 mm wider, but a full 95 mm lower in height and 85 mm shorter in length

The new 1158 cc 90-degree Euro 5 spec’ V-Four unveiled overnight makes 170 horsepower, with that peak number arriving 1000 rpm higher than the big twin’s 158 ponies.

Pistons are 2 mm larger in diameter than the V4 Panigale to realise a capacity of 1158 cc

The V-Four almost matches the DVT Testastretta for peak torque, at 125 Nm it is only 4 Nm shy of the twin-cylinder and that peak arrives only 1250 rpm later.

Intake valves are 33.5 mm and the exhausts 26.8 mm. These are activated via a conventional valve spring and finger follower rather than Ducati’s iconic Desmodromic set-up

Shorter gearing to take advantage of those rpm sees Ducati also claim that the new engine bests the twin when it comes to low and mid-range roll on performance in third and fourth gear.

Conventional steel valve spring and finger follower set-up used by most manufacturers.

Remarkably, at 66.7 kg the V-Four is also 1.2 kg lighter than the DVT twin while also benefitting from being much more compact, it is 20 mm wider, but a full 95 mm lower in height and 85 mm shorter in length which allows for much more flexibility in chassis design.

Ducati have gone away from their epochal Desmodromic valvetrain in favour of the conventional steel valve spring and finger follower set-up used by most manufacturers.

The new engine takes its inspiration from the sporting V-Fours already in production and boasts a counter-rotating crankshaft with 70-degree offset pins that deliver their trademark Twin Pulse firing order and a heady 14:1 compression ratio.

1158 cc 4-cylinder 90° V engine

A 2 mm larger bore is responsible for the hike in capacity from the 1103 cc of the Panigale to 1158 cc for this sports-touring Granturismo application that will power the coming fourth generation of the Multistrada family.

Pistons are 2 mm larger in diameter than the V4 Panigale to realise a capacity of 1158 cc

Once infamous for high servicing costs Ducati have worked very hard over the previous decade to shrug off that reputation with longer and longer valvetrain service intervals and this new V-Four pushes that envelope further with clearance checks required only every 60,000 km. Oil and filter changes for the semi-dry sump are required every 15,000 km.

Stroke is the same as the Panigale V4

One development that might insult some Ducatisti purists is that Ducati have gone away from their epochal Desmodromic valvetrain in favour of the conventional steel valve spring and finger follower set-up used by most manufacturers.

Ducati have gone away from their epochal Desmodromic valvetrain in favour of the conventional steel valve spring and finger follower set-up used by most manufacturers.

Ducati state that their expertise developed with their Desmo systems has enabled them to achieve a reliable high-performance valvetrain. In the Granturismo application the intake valves are 33.5 mm and the exhausts 26.8 mm.

Quad-cam V-Four

Ducati also state that this engine is, as you would expect, much smoother throughout the rev range than the twin and has a much shorter first gear than its sportsbike brethren to help with low-speed riding.

Wet multiplate anti-patter servo clutch

Compared to a pure performance-oriented engine like the Desmosedici Stradale, the V4 Granturismo engine has smaller 46 mm oval throttle bodies, longer ducts and optimised combustion chambers.

Throttle bodies of each bank are driven by a dedicated electric motor and can activate the throttles asynchronously between the two banks

The throttle bodies of each bank are driven by a dedicated electric motor and can activate the throttles asynchronously between the two banks. This solution, thanks to the complex control strategies managed by the full Ride by Wire system, allows the rider to shape the character of the engine according to the selected Riding Mode.

V4 Granturismo cylinder head designed for sports-touring application

A common bugbear with Vee engines in motorcycle applications is the great amount of heat generated immediately beneath the rider by the headers of the rear cylinders, to help counteract this Ducati have employed rear cylinder deactivation at idle to help reduce the build-up of heat stress in stop-start city riding scenarios.

Rear cylinder deactivation reduces heat transmitted to the rider in city riding scenarios

This new powerplant looks to be an exciting step forward and I can’t wait to see what other surprises that the fourth generation Multistrada platform might have in store for us.

Be a nice piece of art to have mounted and hung on your wall….

Ducati has announced that the Italian rider Michael Ruben Rinaldi – alongside team-mate Scott Redding – will defend the colours of the Italian Aruba. It squad in the 2021 WorldSBK season with the official Ducati Panigale V4 R.

Michael Ruben Rinaldi

After an exciting journey in Ducati, joining the official team is an honour for me, as well as confirmation of the quality of the work done over the years. My first target will be to repay, through the results, the trust that has been given to me. For an Italian rider, racing with Ducati is an extraordinary feeling, and I am sure that the passion of the Ducati people will give me an extra boost. I would like to thank Stefano Cecconi and the Aruba family who have always believed in me, and Daniele Casolari, Serafino Foti and the whole Feel Racing for supporting me over the years. A special thought to Claudio Domenicali, Gigi Dall’ Igna and Paolo Ciabatti for having involved me in this new project. Finally, I would like to involve the Ramello family, Denis Sacchetti and all the guys in the Go Eleven team in an ideal embrace. Thanks to them, I was able to make an important quality leap that allowed me to reach this great goal. And of course, I would like to thank my family for having supported me from the beginning together with Germano Bertuzzi whose support has been fundamental. I feel I can promise them all my utmost commitment to achieving great results together“.

Michael Ruben Rinaldi

Rinaldi’s move comes on the back of the new Yamaha announcements for 2021, and the earlier confirmation that Michael van der Mark is heading to BMW next season.

Michael Ruben Rinaldi was born in Rimini on 21st December 1995 and started racing with the minimoto when he was 7 years old, winning the Italian championship in 2006. After winning the Italian Sport Production Championship in 2011, in 2014 he faced his first international experience in the European Superstock 600 championship, which closed as runner-up in 2015. In 2016 Rinaldi rode the Ducati Panigale R of the Aruba.it Racing – Junior team in the SuperStock 1000 FIM championship, finishing sixth and then conquering the European Champion title at the end of the following season. With the Aruba.it Racing – Junior team, Michael Ruben Rinaldi also made his WorldSBK debut in the 2018 season, racing only in European rounds and then competing in all events of the 2019 Championship with the Barni Racing Team. In the current season, Rinaldi obtained his first success in WorldSBK with the Panigale V4 R of the Go Eleven team in Race-1 at Aragon, round that saw him finish on the podium also in the Superpole Race (P3) and Race-2 (P2).

Stefano Cecconi (Team Principal Aruba.it Racing – Ducati)

“It’s with great enthusiasm that we welcome Michael to our team. It is a source of great satisfaction for us as well as a confirmation of the goodness of the project we undertook five years ago with the Junior team. Rinaldi himself was one of the great protagonists, achieving important results: the same results we expect him to achieve from next season on. A big thank to Chaz Davies for all the years we have spent together since we decided – together with Aruba.it – to embark on this fascinating adventure and during which a bond of deep respect and trust was created. The affection for the man and the rider will always remain intact, and for this reason, we want to wish Chaz the best for the future, both inside and outside the track“.

Luigi Dall’ Igna (General Manager of Ducati Corse)

We are pleased to welcome Michael Ruben Rinaldi to the official team. This year Michael has shown great competitiveness, crowned by the Aragon victory, and has always been fighting for top positions. We believe that the time has come for him to join the official team and we are convinced that he has a bright future ahead of him. I want to thank Chaz, who has been an excellent ambassador for our brand over the past seven years and has achieved some very important results with us: 27 victories plus another 59 podiums finish and three consecutive second places in the world championships. We will try to close in the best way our adventure together in the next race weekend in Estoril“.
