American Josh Osby believes he played it ‘too safe’ in the opening SX2 main events at Wollongong’s third round of the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship on Saturday night, despite emerging with the championship lead.

The Raceline KTM Thor contender went 6-3 in main events one and two before challenging for victory in the final encounter, ultimately falling short to accept runner-up honours.

Credited second overall on the night in New South Wales, Osby holds a one-point advantage over compatriot Chris Blose (Penrite Honda Racing), while former red-plate holder Aaron Tanti (Serco Yamaha) is a further one-point behind.

“Tonight was always going to be intense with the triple crown format,” said Osby. “My game plan was [to have] solid laps and consistency with the slick track and short races.

“I think I played it a little too safe in the opening two races – the win just got away from me in the last one. But I’m pumped to take the championship lead, it’s a great achievement for the Raceline KTM Thor team and myself.”

The Australian Supercross Championship heads to New Zealand this weekend for the Monster Energy S-X Open Auckland, marking round four of the series.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Justin Barcia has been crowned the 2019 King of Paris Supercross, winning the opening night as Malcolm Stewart (Smartop Bullfrog Spas MCR Honda) rose to victory on night two.

Barcia charged to a 3-2-1 scorecard in Saturday’s triple crown format, comfortably defeating Vince Friese (Smartop Bullfrog Spas MCR Honda) and Joey Savatgy – who was making his debut with JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing – in the overall standings.

Home favourite Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Yamalube Yamaha Star Racing) was fourth ahead of Stewart, as Australian Chad Reed (Honda) was eighth overall with a 6-7-10 results sheet.

Sunday night’s overall win belonged to Stewart following a commanding performance, the Honda rider recording 3-1-1 race results to finish second to Barcia in the King of Paris standings, which combines scores from both nights of racing.

Geico Honda’s Jeremy Martin was second on the night ahead of Barcia, while Ferrandis and Justin Hill (Smartop Bullfrog Spas MCR Honda) locked out the top five. Reed was 15th overall with 11-17 results in the opening two races, however a heavy fall in the second outing prompted him to sit out the finale.

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Luke Clout broke through to clinch his maiden SX1 victory in the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship at Wollongong’s third round.

It was a dominant display from three-time defending champion Justin Brayton (Penrite Honda Racing) in the opening main event, the number one charging to victory after leading from start to finish.

Clout overcame teammate and third place holder Dan Reardon (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy) halfway through to claim second, while the top five was completed by Brett Metcalfe (Penrite Honda Racing) and Josh Hill (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy).

Positions six to 10 were taken out by Henry Miller (Raceline KTM Thor), Dylan Long (Empire Kawasaki), Cody Dyce (SB Motorsports Suzuki), Lawson Bopping (Empire Kawasaki) and Jayden Rykers (SB Motorsports Suzuki).

Clout took advantage of an early stall from Brayton – who secured the hole-shot – to claim victory in main event two, holding off pressure from Hill, who dropped down the order after a mistake late in the race. Reardon capitalised to secure second ahead of an amazing third for Dyce.

Brayton charged back to fourth, followed by Hill. Metcalfe was sixth, as the top 10 was completed by Bopping, Long, Evans and Dylan Wood (KTM).

Main event three saw Dyce and Evans go down in the opening stages, as Clout stormed a second-consecutive race victory over teammates Reardon and Hill.

Brayton was an uncharacteristic fourth, finishing ahead of fellow Penrite Honda Racing rider Metcalfe. Todd Waters (Husqvarna) improved for sixth, followed by Long, Miller, Jesse Dobson (Husqvarna), and Bopping.

Clout was joined on the overall podium by Reardon and Brayton, the three-time champion still holding a three-point advantage over Clout in the standings. The next stop on the Australian Supercross Championship is scheduled for 16 November at Auckland in New Zealand.

In the end, Tierney claimed an incredible maiden victory ahead of Osby and Duffy, while Blose and Wills rounded out the top five.

Webster was sixth, followed by Oldenburg, Stapleton, Tanti and Kaleb Barham (Husqvarna), while Wilson finished in 19th. Husqvarna extends Osborne contract through 2021

Premier class contender strengthens future for an additional year.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing has extended its contract with Zach Osborne for an additional year, taking him through the 2021 season.

Osborne, who recently represented Team USA at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN), has two 250SX East titles to his name along with a 250MX outdoor championship, and completed his rookie premier class campaign this year with a number of podium results.

“I’m very grateful to continue my relationship with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing,” said Osborne. “We’ve had some very successful years and I’m looking forward to more.

“I’ve truly enjoyed being a part of this program since the revitalization of the brand started back in 2015 and it feels like just yesterday that I joined the team. We have a great group of people and I enjoy going racing with them every weekend.”

Team manager Bobby Hewitt added: “As a team manager you hope to have a least one opportunity in your career to have that one special rider – someone who is talented, motivated and driven to win races and be a champion.

“More importantly, someone who understands the meaning of a man’s character and those you represent on and off the track, and for me, Zach has been and always will be that guy. It has been a privilege to have Zach on the team and it is my hope that he will continue and finish his career with me and the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team.”

JGRMX Suzuki confirms Savatgy alongside Martin for 2020

Image: Supplied.

JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing has confirmed Joey Savatgy will join the outfit for the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross and Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross championships, while Alex Martin will fulfil his multi-year deal in the 250 category.

The team will downscale to just two riders next season after the factory operation faced uncertainty in continuing for 2020, where Savatgy – who has long been linked to the 450 seat – will embark on his second campaign in the premier class.

“We are looking forward to the upcoming season with Joey and Alex,” said team manager Jeremy Albrecht. “Joey has achieved very good results over the past few years, and I expect him to have a break-out year in 2020. He impressed us in every test session on the RM-Z450, and he is extremely motivated.

“Alex returns for his second season with the squad, and I couldn’t be happier. A-Mart made big gains in supercross this past season and scored multiple outdoor podium finishes, so it will be fun to share in his progress.”

Savatgy will make his debut aboard the RM-Z450 this weekend at the Paris Supercross before racing the S-X Open Auckland and AUS-X Open Melbourne.

Championship-winning team DPH Motorsport in liquidation

Championship-winning team DPH Motorsport in liquidation

MX Nationals and AUS Supercross team’s future cast into doubt.

Image: Foremost Media.

Double current Australian Motocross Championship-winning team DPH Motorsport has been ordered into liquidation just months after capturing the 2019 MX Nationals titles with Todd Waters in MX1 and Wilson Todd in MX2.

Public records indicate that the court order follows after a dispute with Yamaha Motor Australia, which was the manufacturer DPH Motorsport competed with prior to picking up official Husqvarna Motorcycles support at the beginning of last year.

While information remains limited, notes published publicly by the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) have confirmed that liquidation status was appointed on 22 October 2019 by an order of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

Reports of DPH Motorsport being in financial trouble had been widespread through the MX Nationals season, however, despite rumours that the team had folded mid-season, DPH Motorsport went on to complete all 10 rounds and deliver the elusive dual championship victories with Waters and Todd.

The team has been in attendance at the opening two rounds of the Australian Supercross Championship with both riders, although injuries sustained by MX2 World Championship-bound Todd have seen him sidelined for the season-remainder.

Despite maintaining close relations with DPH, Waters will continue in AUS Supercross this weekend at Wollongong riding a privately-entered Husqvarna FC 450 in SX1 with direct support from Husqvarna Motorcycles. It’s understood that the contract between Husqvarna Motorcycles and DPH Motorsport was made void by the company operating the team being in liquidation.

When contacted during the past week, DPH Motorsport team owner Dale Hocking acknowledged the liquidation order, but was unwilling to provide further detail on the matter. Yamaha Motor Australia representatives also chose not to make comment.

American Miller to join Raceline KTM for supercross remainder

American Miller to join Raceline KTM for supercross remainder

Factory-supported KTM squad drafts in SX1 rider for final three rounds.

Image: Foremost Media.

The Raceline KTM Thor team will revert to a three-rider structure in Saturday night’s third stop of the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship when American Henry Miller joins the team as its SX1 entry from the Wollongong round.

Miller, 22, is a privateer in the US and scored a season-best of 11th position in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series at Indianapolis riding 250SX East. A 16th-place finish at the Las Vegas finals in 450SX was also a strong result.

“I’m very excited to be racing here in Australia and I want to thank the Raceline KTM Thor Team for this amazing opportunity,” Miller said. “I have always heard good things about the series down under and I jumped at the chance to race over here when I received the call from the team.

“Coming into the series at round three will not be easy, with my competition already into the swing of things, but I’m confident in my skills and feel very at home on the KTM 450 SX-F. We tested my race bike today and everything feels great – I can’t wait to go racing at Wollongong.”

Miller’s arrival comes after Raceline regular Hayden Mellross was injured during the MX Nationals and his initial replacement, Justin Rodbell, was forced to return home to America due to visa issues. The team has now confirmed the signing of another US rider in Miller.

“We are thrilled to have Henry signed for the remainder of the season,” explained Raceline KTM team manager Chris Woods. “Although he may be relatively unknown here in Australia, he has shown fantastic speed and results as a privateer in the AMA championships. I’m confident he will represent our team partners well and turn some heads with his results.”

DesmoSport co-owner Bayliss hails ‘world-class’ Jones

Triple Superbike world champion praises recently-crowned ASBK title holder.

Image: Foremost Media.

DesmoSport Ducati co-owner and triple Superbike world champion Troy Bayliss has hailed Mike Jones as a world-class rider after securing his second ASBK crown last weekend.

Just half a point separated Jones and outgoing champion Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing) going into the final race of the season at Sydney Motorsport Park, where the Ducati pilot prevailed with victory following an incredible 13-lap tussle between the pair.

The championship marks the first Australian title that Bayliss has had direct involvement in, while it also represents the first national superbike crown for Ducati since the late 1990s.

“He’s fantastic rider with a good head on his shoulders,” Bayliss declared to CycleOnline.com.au. “It would be pretty hard for him to lose his way, and nothing really fazes him too much.

“He keeps calm and in control – we really saw the dog come out of him this afternoon, and it’s great when that happens. He’s a world-class rider, without a doubt. We’re really happy to have him with us.

“I’m so happy with how Mike rode, he’s been riding good all year – that was one of the best races I’ve ever seen, and I’m so proud of him. It’s just really good to see Ducati win an Australian championship since 1999 I think it was with Steve Martin, so we’re all pretty happy – it’s just fantastic.”

Both Bayliss and Jones have indicated they’ll continue their partnership through 2020, where he’ll don the number one aboard a DesmoSport-prepared Ducati Panigale V4 R.
