Rogers joins Wilson at Yamalube Yamaha Racing in 2020

Yamaha Junior Racing product Levi Rogers will graduate to the MXD category in 2020 with Yamalube Yamaha Racing, while the squad has retained Jay Wilson for a third consecutive season in the MX2 class.

In another Yamaha team restructure for 2020, Yamalube Yamaha Racing will re-enter the MXD category for the first time since 2017, abandoning its MX1 effort that was headed up by class rookie Richie Evans in 2019.

Queensland’s Rogers enters the MXD division after a strong showing at the 2019 KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championship (AJMX), earning runner-up honours in the 125cc 15 Years title fight.

“I was pretty excited when the Yamalube Yamaha Racing Team came to me and offered me a ride for 2020,” Rogers stated. “I guess one of the benefits of being with Yamaha Junior Racing is that if you get the results in juniors, then the next door opens with Yamaha into MXD and this is a great opportunity for me on such a good team.

“I know everyone on the team and have worked with them before when I did the MXR races at the MX Nationals for the last two years, so it’s not a new environment. I also have Jay as a team-mate, and I can talk things over with him as he has so much knowledge and experience at this level.

“For the last 12 months I have watched the senior races closely and I can’t wait to be apart of them now. Yamaha Junior Racing was awesome for me and I had six successful years with them but now its time to take the next step in my career and give it all I have.”

Former MX2 and SX2 Wilson, who will race the opening five rounds of the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, returns for his third straight year with the Queensland-based operation.

“I’m lucky to be surrounded by a great team and work with a great company like Yamaha that I don’t event look elsewhere at the end of each year,” Wilson explained. “We have not only a successful working relationship but a good friendship off the track and the results show we do the work.

“2019 was a consistent year for the most part and reasonably successful but no championships. I’m still motivated to win championships and that’s what I will be striving for in 2020. I’m in the prime of my career and want to keep improving every year with my racing and my technique.

“It’s also exciting to have Levi with us next year. He is a quiet kid and doesn’t say too much but I know he listens, and it will be great to be able to help and guide him at each round. His speed is good, and I think he can do well if he keeps working hard.”

The addition of Rogers confirms the departure of Evans after two seasons with the team.

Mellross entering ‘best years of his career’ believes Dack

Image: Foremost Media.

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy team owner Craig Dack believes Hayden Mellross is only just entering the ‘best years of his career’ after recently signing the MX Nationals title favourite to a two-year deal.

Mellross experienced a breakout season in the 2019 series, however a knee injury at the penultimate stop of the championship denied him of challenging for the title at Coolum’s season-finale.

Transferring from Raceline KTM Thor, the New South Welshman will join Kirk Gibbs under the CDR awning next year, the former MX1 champion embarking on his second season with the powerhouse squad.

“I feel we have two strong, dedicated and determined riders for the 2020 season and both are in the prime of their careers,” Dack explained.

“With Hayden we have a talented, yet very experienced racer who has competed internationally but just now is entering the best years of his career.

“With some CDR guidance and on the 2020 Yamaha YZ450F, we believe we can take Hayden’s racing to another level in 2020 and look forward to seeing just how good he can become.”

Mellross comes into the team following the departure of MX1 and SX1 runner-up Luke Clout, who has signed with Penrite Honda Racing for 2020 in a deal that will allow him to race the opening rounds of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship.

F1 champion Hamilton tests Rossi’s Yamaha YZR-M1 in unique ‘ride swap’

Reigning Formula One (F1) world champion Lewis Hamilton has sampled Valentino Rossi’s Monster Energy Yamaha YZR-M1 MotoGP machine in a unique ‘ride swap’ at Valencia, where the latter also had the opportunity to drive Hamilton’s 2017 Mercedes-AMG Petronas W08 F1 car.

Hamilton, who rode a WorldSBK-spec Yamaha R1 last year with the Pata Yamaha squad, was onboard the M1 that Rossi piloted at Valencia’s MotoGP season finale, earning praise from the famous number 46.

“It’s so awesome to see a legend like Valentino in the car,” Hamilton commented. “I’m excited for him, for discovering the car for the first time. It reminds me of my first time in an F1 car.

“When you see all the team around you, it’s just a different animal. It was so cool to be out on track and see Valentino ahead of me on the same bike.”

Rossi is no stranger to driving an F1 car, having had opportunities to do so in a Ferrari from 2002 through to his last appearance in 2010.

“Technically, Valencia is a hard track and today was windy so at one point,” Rossi explained. “I thought it would be difficult for Lewis to continue, but he was brilliant on the bike and his position on the M1 was great. I think he had loads of fun, which is the main thing.

“I was a big fan of Lewis’ before but now I am even more. We had a fantastic day, where the two top classes of motorsports not only met, but worked together.

“I felt like a real F1 driver for a day. I didn’t want the day to end. I also rode the YZR-M1 on track with Lewis. It was a proud moment for the team to share our passion with him.”

Restructured WBR Yamaha signs Larwood alongside Purvis for 2020

Image: Foremost Media.

WBR Yamaha Bulk Nutrients Racing has signed AJMX champion Alex Larwood to contest the MXD category of the 2020 MX Nationals, while the team will re-enter the MX2 class with Maximus Purvis amid a restructure.

South Australian Larwood, who made his professional debut at the Monster Energy AUS-X Open Melbourne last month, enters the WBR squad after five years of being developed through the Yamaha Junior Racing program.

“At the start of the year, Shane Metcalfe sat me down and asked what I wanted to do in 2020 and where I wanted to be racing and my answer was with Yamaha and at WBR,” Larwood explained.

“So to put in all the hard work, get some good results and then actually get the ride with the team is an awesome reward and I can’t thank Travis and everyone at WBR Yamaha for giving me this chance.

“We have already got things underway and the team also helped out a bit in supercross, and I can’t wait to get racing in 2020. I look forward to riding the MX Nationals tracks, working with the team and learning more about the bike and how racing works and getting to race different riders on new tracks. I’m ready and can’t wait.”

Purvis will graduate to the MX2 category following a stellar MXD campaign in 2019, where he charged to runner-up honours in the development class.

“Making the step up from MXD to MX2 is pretty big and I’m pleased that Yamaha found a way for me to be part of it with the WBR Yamaha team,” Purvis commented. “I know the guys on the team well and I also know we have a great bike, so it takes out the uncertainty of not only changing classes but teams.

“While I’m in Australia, I live in Shepparton, which is only a couple of hours from the teams’ base in Echuca so that also makes my life easier. We have built a good base together in 2019 and hopefully we can build on that in 2020 and I can establish myself as a top five guy in the MX2 class throughout 2020.”

The Kiwi will contest the New Zealand MX Nationals at the beginning of 2020 with JCR Yamaha.

Australian Caleb Grothues has cemented his future in the EMX250 category of the Motocross European Championship for 2020 after signing with Team RT973, which will see him pilot a Suzuki RM-Z250.

The Western Australian will transfer to the Suzuki squad after two seasons at SDM Corse Yamaha, where he’ll contest the International Italian Motocross Championship and the Italian MX2 championship alongside EMX250.

Grothues 2019 campaign in the competitive EMX250 class saw him finish with a ranking of 20th after completing six of the eight rounds.

“I’m happy to announce I will be onboard a Suzuki for the 2020 season for Team RT973,” Grothues commented. “I will be racing the EMX250 and both International Italian and Italian [MX2] championships. I want to thank all the people who are supporting me and behind me for the 2020 season.”

The former junior world champion scored a season-best result of ninth overall at Russia’s fourth round of the European series.

Island Classic grid takes shape as America announces 2020 squad

Image: Russell Colvin.

The Island Classic’s International Challenge grid is taking shape for 2020 after Team America announced its 12-rider squad for the Phillip Island event on 24-26 January.

Team America not only boasts three riders who finished in the top six of the individual standings in 2019 – Josh Hayes, Larry Pegram and Michael Gilbert – but it’s now also added seven-time Canadian Superbike champion Jordan Szoke and former AMA front-runner Taylor Knapp to its ever-strengthening roster.

The squad will host the first female to take part in the International Challenge, Melissa Paris, who made her professional debut in the 2009 and has WorldSSP, EWC, AMA and Spanish CEV experience on her vast CV.

Her husband, Josh Hayes, is expected to be a powerhouse for Team America, and the four-time AMA Superbike champion – and second on the all-time race winner’s list behind Aussie Mat Mladin – will have fond memories of winning the fourth and final International Challenge race in 2019 on his Yamaha FJ1250.

“In the first race of 2019 I was quite taken back by the level of competition on these classic era bikes,” said Hayes. “[I] Even got my feelings hurt a few times!

“But when I was able to win the fourth and final challenge race, and returned to our pit to find the captains of all the other teams there to celebrate alongside us, I knew this was a special event that’s more about two-wheel passion than business, and something that I wanted to continue to be a part of.

“In 2019 I was able to test the Mojo Yamaha a handful of times. Also, I rode in MotoAmerica’s Supersport races at seven events – racing for my wife’s MP13 Racing Yamaha, with her also as my crew chief.

“The 2020 Island Classic is going to be a family event for me this year with my wife, Melissa, and my two-year-old son, Hawk, joining me. Even better is that Melissa will be riding a Mojo Yamaha TZ-750 in the International Classic races.”

Dave Crussell will once again captain the American squad, and also on his roster are Jorge Gurero, Joe Pethoud, Brian Filo, Bruce Lind and Robert Ruwoldt.

The Australian team for the International Challenge features David Johnson, Shawn Giles, Jed Metcher, Craig Ditchburn, Aaron Morris, Scott Webster, Cameron Donald, Steve Martin, Beau Beaton, John Allen and Alex Phillis.

The United Kingdom returns to the Interactional Challenge arena in 2020 with a new-look team, which will be in the coming days.

Davalos secures 450SX seat with Team Tedder KTM

Image: Supplied.

Martin Davalos has secured a 450SX seat in the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship after signing with Team Tedder Monster Energy Lucas Oil KTM Racing, the squad understood to be receiving factory support from the Austrian manufacturer.

Davalos will be joined by Dakota Tedder for the 2020 supercross season, the duo to race the same machinery made available to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing riders and the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM squad.

Davalos, 32, pointed out of the 250SX category after the 2019 season, however has been adamant for significant time on his desire to graduate to the premier class.

The Ecuadorian recently put in a strong performance at the Geneva Supercross, where he claimed victory on night one before finishing just shy of the top spot on night two. He was still piloting Kawasaki machinery at the Swiss event.

The opening round of the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship is scheduled for 4 January at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

Swift recovery grants Tanti preparation for AMA Supercross stint

Image: Foremost Media.

A fast-tracked recovery following a frightening crash at the Monster Energy AUS-X Open Melbourne last month will grant Aaron Tanti adequate time to prepare for a five-round stint in the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship.

The Serco Yamaha challenger was initially thought to be sidelined for up to eight weeks after suffering bone bruising around his hip and pelvic region, alongside internal damage.

Tanti, who was in contention for the SX2 crown at Melbourne’s season-finale, revealed plans this week to contest the first five rounds of the 250SX West series in America, which kicks off on 4 January.

The New South Welshman has suggested his injuries are rapidly healing, allowing him to recommence training before a scheduled return on the bike in the coming days.

“Initially I felt pretty bad after that crash, but after a few days and visiting a specialist, I started to come up pretty good,” Tanti explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “I only had a week off training – I’m training now – but I’ll ride in the next few days.

“We were pretty much going to go off my results in the supercross series after talking to the guys that are helping me get over there – I wanted to be competitive here, and I feel like I was riding really well and they were happy how I was over here.

“Serco Yamaha is helping me a lot – I’m taking mechanic Ben [Dutton], and our bikes and parts are being sent from here. Gav [Eales] is organising a lot of the stuff over there for me. The other major helper is Complete Parts – they’re helping me a lot to get over there.”

Tanti joins a list of regular Australian supercross contenders to be entering the opening rounds of the AMA Supercross series, which includes Luke Clout (Penrite Honda Racing), Jay Wilson (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) and Joel Wightman (Honda). Australian teenager Jett Lawrence (Geico Honda) is also set to embark on his rookie season.
