Penrite Honda’s Herfoss reunited with former boss Free

Former Honda team owner appointed crew chief of multi-time champion.

Troy Herfoss has been reunited with former team owner Paul Free, who’ll join Penrite Honda Racing as the multi-time champion’s crew chief for the 2020 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK).

Free operated Honda’s factory racing effort for over a decade, signing Herfoss in 2014 before the New South Welshman went onto claim a pair of Australian Superbike titles under his guidance.

Since the closure of both his Superbike and motocross teams in 2017, Free took on a technical role at DesmoSport Ducati that saw him assist Mike Jones to the ASBK crown last year.

The newly-appointed position as Herfoss’ crew chief comes following the departure of former Penrite Honda team manager Shaun Clarke, who had previously worked under Free since the early 2000s.

“I’m very excited to work with Troy and Honda again,” Free stated to CycleOnline.com.au. “There’s a whole lot for me to learn and take on board – there are different structures, parts and components since my time running Honda’s team. There are all sorts of stuff that I’ll need to get my head around.

“I have noticed over the last couple of years while working with the DesmoSport guys, is that having the permission of crew chief is a very different role to what I have played in the past. Generally, I’ve worked with one of the riders as crew chief, but I’ve always had the responsibility of operating and overseeing the team and making sure both riders were being catered for fairly.

“To be able to focus on just the motorbike and the rider, and build strategy around that situation, is a whole lot easier than running the whole program. I think the way Deon has structured his Honda team, I think it will work exceptionally well.”

Penrite Honda Racing team owner Deon Coote is excited to draft in Free as Herfoss’ crew chief, as the team prepares for a transfer to Michelin tyres this season.

“Obviously Paul and Troy have had a good working relationship in the past, and he’s very familiar with the product and the brand,” Coote explained. “There was an opportunity there with Shaun [Clarke) leaving for him to come back into the Honda family.”

The opening round of the 2020 ASBK season is scheduled for 27 February-1 March at Phillip Island, running in conjunction with round one of the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Clutch A1 podium pivotal for defending champion Webb

A significant haul of points despite struggling with sickness on race-day.

A difficult afternoon at Anaheim 1 wasn’t enough to ruin the opening round for defending Monster Energy Supercross champion Cooper Webb, coming through with an inspired podium in the main event.

It surfaced following qualifying that Webb had been struck with a bout of sickness, only managing to qualify his Red Bull KTM in 15th overall.

The 24-year-old improved to score third in his heat race, adding to his confidence prior to the 450SX final, in which he surged through the field from sixth in the early laps to secure a podium in P3.

“It was a tough day for sure, but sometimes that happens so it was good to go out,” he explained. “Practice wasn’t anything great – I think I was around 15th, so that wasn’t too good – but I feel like when the race started the heat went pretty good.

“In the main event I plugged away, had a decent start and made a few good passes. I found a good little comfort zone there in third, so just kind of rode it on in.

“I’m actually headed back to Florida to ride out there, St. Louis dirt is always pretty good and our dirt is similar, so I’ll head east and recover. I think it’s just a little 24-hour deal, so yeah, it’s a quick week, but we’ll do everything in our power to get back to 100 per cent.”

Webb’s result came as a surprise of sorts following his afternoon form, but will become increasingly important as the season progresses since he finished ahead of multiple title challengers on the night.

Falzon outlines privateer ASBK campaign for 2020

South Australian returning with CAT colours this season.

Words: Russell Colvin

South Australian Daniel Falzon has outlined plans to contest the 2020 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) as a privateer following his departure from Yamaha Racing Team.

The former Supersport champion will saddle up aboard a privately entered CAT Yamaha YZF-R1 machine for the seven-round series in a similar set-up to his 2017 season, where he eventually scored a factory ride with YRT for the following two years.

“It’s great to be back on the CAT Yamaha once again in the same colours which have been synonymous with success in the past,” Falzon told CycleOnline.com.au.

“We have had some good results with our JD Racing prepared Superbike and we are looking to replicate those results next year. Top five would be good, but honestly I’m not sure where we will sit as I was faster on the YRT bike – I am more confident on the CAT bike, so this may even things out, we’ll wait to see.”

Falzon has indicated he’ll receive support from YRT, and will be equipped with Dunlop tyres this season. The three-time race winner will also pilot the 2019 R1 rather than the updated 2020 model.

“We can’t thank Dunlop Australia enough for backing us next year, coupled with support from YRT,” he added. “It’s shaping up to be a good year all round – CAT dealers William Adams and EPSA have stayed on board alongside Mainline dyno, we’ve had great partnerships with all of these in the past, it just feels comfortable.

“We know next year’s competition is looking to be tough, the bar has been raised and we are actually all benefitting from it -Australian racers are fast”

“We have tested at The Bend last weekend and I can honestly say that the 2019 YZF-R1 is a strong machine. I am soon addressing an arm pump problem which plagued me all season, so I’m hoping to be right for the official ASBK test at Phillip Island at the end of January.”

The opening round of the 2020 ASBK season is scheduled for 27 February-1 March at Phillip Island, running in conjunction with round one of the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Blazusiak clinches SuperEnduro victory in Germany

Polish ace steals points lead at the second round.

Image: Supplied.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Taddy Blazusiak has clinched victory at Germany’s second round of the 2020 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship.

Race one started well for Blazusiak, completing the first lap in third place. He capitalised on errors from those in front of him, ultimately taking the chequered flag with a huge 34-second advantage over Alfredo Gomez (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) and Jonny Walker (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing).

The second race, despite the reversed grid, went very much the same way as the first – Blazusiak, riding consistently, made his way to the front leaving his rivals behind. This time it was Billy Bolt (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) in second ahead of Walker.

The third and final race saw Blazusiak take the holeshot and instantly create a comfortable lead. The Polish ace never faltered and completed his hat-trick of first-place results to finish ahead of Gomez and bolt.

Overall it was Blazusiak who captured victory while earning the points lead, as Bolt and Walker were second and third respectively. The next stop on the calendar is scheduled for 18 January in Spain.

Reigning champion Price leads Dakar Rally on day one

Brabec and Walkner lock out the top three in opening stage.

Image: Supplied.

Reigning champion and two-time winner Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) has opened the 2020 Dakar Rally by topping stage one.

Carrying the number one plate, the Australian had the advantageous position of being the 23rd rider to enter the day’s stage. The Queenslander immediately pushed hard from the start, posting the second-fastest time to the first waypoint.

A small issue with his navigation equipment looked set to reduce his pace with a seized road book making navigation difficult.

He was able to tag on to the back of teammate Matthias Walkner and the pair brought their KTM 450 RALLY machines home safely and in good time, with Price fastest overall.

Monster Energy Honda Team’s Ricky Brabec came in a close second ahead of Walkner, as the top five was completed by Kevin Benavides (Monster Energy Honda Team) and Sam Sunderland (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing).

Australian Rodney Faggotter (Yamaha Motor Australia) wound up 25th on day one day, as compatriots Ben Young (Duust Rally Team), Phillip Wilson (Bas Dakar KTM Racing Team), Trevor Wilson (Husqvarna) and Matthew Tisdall (Bas Dakar KTM Racing Team) finished in positions 92, 98, 127, and 129.

Barcia goes back-to-back at Anaheim 1 in 450SX thriller

First-career victory for Cooper in 250SX West final at opening round.

A spectacular 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, opener at Anaheim 1 tonight resulted in Justin Barcia landing back-to-back opening round victories.

The new season saw Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) and 450SX newcomer Adam Cianciarulo go head-to-head, as Barcia led the opening seven laps with a 2.5s cushion prior to an off-track excursion.

That enabled the Monster Energy Kawasaki rookie to lead his share of the final, however, he too would make an error that cost him the lead – Barcia striking back to seize upon the opportunity. That’s how they would finish, with Barcia clear by 5.646s.

Completing the podium was defending champion Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM) despite qualifying down in P15 this afternoon with a minor sickness, fending off challenges from Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM), Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) and Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) through the race.

One of the favourites, Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki), was unable to find the spark needed in the main to wind up seventh, ahead of Justin Brayton (Team Honda HRC), who had been in podium contention earlier and then made a mistake of his own.

SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas/MotoConcepts Honda rider Malcolm Stewart was ninth at the flag, directly in front of teammates Justin Hill and the fast-starting Vince Friese. Commencing his final season of competition, Chad Reed (Mountain Motorsports CBDMD CR22 Honda) finished 18th.

Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha rider Justin Cooper won the opening 250SX West round of the season at Anaheim 1 tonight, topping teammate Dylan Ferrandis.

The opening lap saw Austin Forkner (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) out front early, before Cooper managed to take over at the front momentarily.

On lap 12 a mistake by Forkner while leading saw him go off-track, able to resume in third, but only after allowing defending champion Ferrandis to gain the position behind teammate Cooper.

Cooper took victory by 2.450s over Ferrandis in a strong beginning to his defence, with Forkner a comfortable third to complete the podium. Behind them, Christian Craig (Geico Honda) kept Michael Mosiman (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) at bay for fourth place.

The first showing of Cameron Mcadoo at Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki resulted in sixth ahead of Brandon Hartranft (TLD Red Bull KTM), with his teammate Derek Drake, Australian rookie Jett Lawrence (Geico Honda) and Alex Martin (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki) rounding out the top 10.

Lawrence did go down on lap four after dicing with countryman Luke Clout (Penrite Honda) for position inside the top 10, eventually working his way back to P9 after remounting. Clout, meanwhile, crashed out of ninth at around the halfway mark.

Next-best finishing Australian in the field was Jay Wilson (Altherm JCR Yamaha) as he qualified directly through his heat and went on to claim 17th, while Aaron Tanti (Serco Yamaha) crashed out of the LCQ. In 450SX, Joel Wightman (Honda) was unable to make the night program at A1.

Next weekend will see the series arrive for round two in St. Louis, Missouri, the red plate to be worn by Barcia aboard the factory YZ450F in 450SX and Cooper in 250SX on Saturday, 11 January.

Forkner was later docked two positions from third to fifth for his incident that saw him cut part of the circuit. Geico Honda rider Christian Craig is now third, with Michael Mosiman (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) fourth.

Shortened schedule a possibility for Reed’s final season

Lamborghini commitments could result in a 15-round send-off for icon.

Image: Octopi Media.

Conflicting dates between Monster Energy Supercross and his looming sportscar schedule could see Chad Reed miss up to two rounds of the 2020 season.

Reed, 37, will open his final season of Supercross today at Anaheim 1, the prestigious opening round in which he has previously won on three occasions.

With his Mountain Motorsports commitments including a continuation of Lamborghini competition, Reed has stated that he will line-up in ‘at least’ 15 rounds of 450SX through 2020.

“Last year I had the opportunity to do some car racing and, just like motorcycles did at three years old, it stole my heart,” Reed explained. “That was the moment that I was not falling asleep on night and motorcycles weren’t on my mind – it was all about how can I go faster in a Lamborghini?

“With that, here we are. I’m excited that I get to do… I’m not quite sure how many rounds, but I’ll do 15 at a minimum because there are a couple of conflicts with some car stuff. If the motorcycle thing’s going as well as I plan it to go, then my priority will be motorcycles and we’ll see what we can do.”

Reed was impressively crowned Lamborghini World Final champion at Jerez, Spain, last October, following a partial campaign in the 2019 IMSA-sanctioned Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America series.

MX Nationals calendar scaled back to six events in 2020

Image: Foremost Media.

The 2020 Australian MX Nationals series has been reduced to six events, Motorcycling Australia (MA) has formally announced with series promoter Williams Event Management (WEM).

In a bid to stabilise the championship from next season in an increasingly difficult sponsorship climate, MA is expected to further increase its involvement from the following season.

WEM has been a mainstay as the Australian Motocross Championship organiser for over two decades and has established the globally-recognised MX Nationals brand, however, that reign could end at the conclusion of 2020 as a club-managed model is being evaluated.

MA currently promotes both the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) and Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) with involvement from affiliated clubs, which could serve the basis of a new-look motocross championship as of 2021.

“Motorcycling Australia and Williams Event Management are working together to ensure the the sustainability of the championship series into 2020 and beyond,” a statement distributed to teams this week revealed. “A number of factors have require a number of changes to the calendar and events.

“We had planned the MX Nationals Pro Am at Traralgon in February for the Australian Womens, Vets and Under 19s, [however] due to the extreme dry conditions and high fire danger forecast, we have cancelled the event and will make an announcement in January. We are looking at were we can fit the classes in the MXN calendar.

“The model we have been running over the last five years has had to see some major changes to fit within the current climate. The series will be conducted over six weekends and nine rounds, [including] three double-headers.

“The series will see several changes in order to ensure the development of the model for sustainability and club management into the future. We will be dropping all back-to-back races, so all rounds will have a two-moto format only. There are a number of other change we are looking at and these will be announce in January.”

The MA national calendar initially released in November indicated that the series would be contested over seven events and 10 rounds, which has now been heavily modified as a result of the recent structural decision.

2020 MX Nationals calendar:
Rds 1-2 – 4-5 April – Horsham, VIC
Rd3 – 3 May – Newry, VIC
Rd4 – 24 May – Gympie, QLD
Rd5 – 28 June – Conondale, QLD
Rds 6-7 – 25-26 July – Maitland, NSW
Rds 8-9 – 22-23 August – Coolum, QLD

Serco Yamaha confirms Tanti and Walsh for 2020 season

New Zealand international a surprise signing for factory-backed team.

Image: Foremost Media.

Serco Yamaha has re-signed Aaron Tanti for the 2020 Australian motocross and supercross season, set to be joined by incoming New Zealander Dylan Walsh.

After finishing fifth in the MX2 class of the MX Nationals and was also P5 in supercross after holding the SX2 red plate three rounds in.

“This is the first time in my career I have been with the one team for more than one season, so the stability is something that I like and allows me to make plans knowing that I have the support of Serco Yamaha for 2020,” Tanti said.

“I have a great working relationship with Gavin [Eales] and the Serco Yamaha team and we were quickly able to get something sorted for the 2020 season a little while ago, so that allowed me to focus on my racing and training knowing that things are in place for next season.”

The team has also signed Walsh, 22, for both motocross and supercross, the current British MX2 champion due to contest his first year in Australia. He also has extensive MX2 World Championship experience.

“I would love to have stayed in Europe and continued racing as I felt that I would be a contender in MX2 this year, but with the tight economy my team shut down and I was left with nothing,” Walsh explained.

“Australia was the first place I looked when I got the news and, at the same time, Gavin has been doing some research on me, so it all worked out smoothly and here we are. Serco Yamaha have a great reputation and also a lot of success over the years, so its awesome to be part of such a strong and committed team.

“My plan is to stay in New Zealand and do the nationals over here as a warm up for the MX Nationals in Australia. I will then base myself in South East Queensland to be near the team and get stuck into racing in Australia. I’m both excited and looking forward to the new challenge.”

Yamaha Motor Australia has strengthened its partnership with the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC), extending its position as naming rights sponsor for the 2020 season.

The partnership now enters its 15th consecutive year, where the Yamaha brand has assisted in raising the level of the AORC series that has produced multiple ISDE winning riders.
