Yamaha Racing Team’s Cru Halliday has indicated the squad will sample the 2020 YZF-R1M in ASBK trim this month at Wakefield Park, the New South Welshman hopeful of piloting the updated Superbike at Phillip Island’s season-opener.

The 2018 Supersport champion was onboard the 2019 model at last week’s test at the Island, where he wound up fifth and eighth on the timesheets during both days of testing.

Halliday revealed a lack of race-spec parts was the reason the team wasn’t equipped with the 2020 model, however they’re anticipated arrive for the outfit’s private test in the middle of the month.

“We’re going to test this month at Wakefield Park, and that will be on the 2020,” Halliday revealed to CycleOnline.com.au. “I haven’t ridden it in race form yet because they’ve sort of been delayed on parts – they’re waiting for them to come from Europe. I’ve ridden it in stock form and it felt pretty good.

“I’m guessing if all goes to plan, we might be on the new bikes [for Phillip Island]. If they’ve got time to build them and have everything ready, then I don’t see why not. We just have to see how this test goes and see if we have them running smoothly – I don’t see why wouldn’t be on them for round one.”

Phillip Island’s opening round of the 2020 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship is scheduled for 27 February-1 March, taking place alongside round one of the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Australian Luke Clout has earned an impressive season-best result in the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross 250SX West Championship, the Penrite Honda Racing ace storming to fifth at Oakland’s fifth round.

The New South Welshman rode strongly from the beginning of the day, qualifying in fifth before leading a number of laps in heat race two, winding up in fourth position.

Clout came out with competitive pace in the 16-lap main event, fending off teammate Mitchell Oldenburg to secure fifth behind JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Racing’s Alex Martin.

“I felt better,” Clout admitted. “Testing has gone well, and working with Buddy Antunez has clearly helped. It was a positive step forward but we have a lot of work in front of us. I really hope I can stay and complete the championship.”

Clout sits eighth in the championship standings as the series heads to San Deigo this weekend, which was initially scheduled to be his last Supercross appearance before returning home to Australia for the MX Nationals.

Bolt grabbed control of the lead on lap one of race two, putting on a flawless ride to claim an impressive victory, 22 seconds ahead of his nearest challengers Walker and Blazusiak.

Second win of Supercross season for Tomac in Oakland

Second win of Supercross season for Tomac in Oakland

Victory of champion Ferrandis earns 250SX West red plate.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac stood atop the podium for the second time in this 2020 Monster Energy Supercross season with a convincing performance at Oakland.

It was Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) who led early, before Tomac made his move into the lead at halfway on the deteriorating circuit.

However, a mistake from Tomac soon afterwards enabled Roczen to retake the advantage. There was no stopping Tomac though, responding with two minutes left on the clock and going on to win by 3.557s.

The major talking point came on the final lap as a fast-finishing Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM) first passed Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) for third, before striking on Roczen on the final lap at the final corner.

Contact made between the pair – Webb finishing second and Roczen third – appeared to cause Roczen pain in his right leg following the checkered flag. The latter still retains the red plate following five rounds.

Fourth came Cianciarulo despite riding with a bruised tailbone from his crash at Glendale, while Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) rounded out the top five. Sixth was an inspired ride from Justin Barcia, who went through via the LCQ due to an engine failure on his Monster Energy Yamaha in his heat.

It was a strong result for Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) in seventh, with heat two winner Justin Hill (Smartop Bullfrog Spas Motoconcepts Honda), Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM WPS) and Malcolm Stewart (Smartop Bullfrog Spas Motoconcepts Honda) in places eight to 10.

In the championship it’s still Roczen who holds the red plate, three points ahead of Tomac as Monster Energy Supercross travels to San Diego next Saturday, 8 February. Chad Reed sat out tonight’s round with an ongoing rib injury.

Defending 250SX West champion Dylan Ferrandis has taken over the points-lead with his second win of the year in Oakland.

The Monster Energy Star Yamaha rider stalked Austin Forkner (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) until making an aggressive move with five minutes remaining.

From there he extended a 2.336s advantage, while the podium was completed by Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Yamaha), who made a late move by early leader Alex Martin (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki) for position.

Penrite Honda Racing teammates Luke Clout and Mitchell Oldenburg were fifth and sixth respectively, benefiting from a late mishap of Brendan Hartranft (TLD Red Bull KTM), who was fifth but dropped to eighth towards the end.

In seventh was Hartranft’s teammate Derek Drake, while another Australian in Aaron Tanti (Yamaha) took a season-best of ninth place. Martin Castelo (JMC Motorsports Racing Fly Husqvarna) finished 10th.

Disaster struck in-form Rockstar Energy Husqvarna contender Michael Mosiman, who crashed out at the halfway point and was ruled out with bike damage sustained in the multi-rider pile-up. Next of the Australians in the field was Jay Wilson (Yamaha) as he rode to P16.

The final 250SX West round prior to their mid-season break will be San Diego next Saturday night, with Ferrandis now two points ahead of Cooper and Forkner a further eight markers back.

Aggravated rib injury puts Reed out of Oakland round

Existing off-season injury spells trouble for retiring Australian.

Image: Octopi Media.

Dual Monster Energy Supercross champion Chad Reed is sitting out tonight’s Oakland round of the 2020 season after aggravating an existing rib injury last weekend.

Reed was involved in a multi-bike incident at the start of main event three at Glendale’s Triple Crown, ending his evening as a result.

The Mountain Motorsports cbdMD CR22 Racing rider, who will retire at the close of this year, made the decision to skip round five in a bid to recover further prior to San Diego. He is still in attendance this weekend.

It’s been a challenging beginning to Reed’s final Supercross campaign so far, spending a large portion of the off-season recovering from broken ribs sustained in Paris and only putting together his private team during December.

Coming into Oakland’s fifth round of the season, Reed is currently ranked 19th in the premier class standings aboard the Honda CRF450R, his best main event finishes of 18th coming at both Anaheim 1 and Anaheim 2 during January.

Bayliss secures WorldSSP wildcard at Phillip Island opener

Image: Russell Colvin.

Teenage talent Oli Bayliss will make his international debut as a wildcard in Phillip Island’s opening round of the 2020 World Supersport Championship (WorldSSP).

Bayliss will pull double-duty in round one of the Australian championship and WorldSSP with Cube Racing, following in the footsteps of triple world champion father, Troy Bayliss.

“I’m really excited and grateful to have this opportunity to race at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in the World Supersport Championship for the first round as a wildcard rider,” 16-year-old Bayliss commented.

“It’s going to be really tough with how fast them guys have been going over the years and it’s going to be a great opportunity to ride with some of the fastest guys in the world to see how I can place amongst them.

“I will be doing double duties, so it’s going to be a big weekend and a bit of a challenge – I’m going to be training very hard coming up to that round to stay fit.

“When dad was racing with World Superbikes, I grew up around a lot of the mechanics who are still around in the paddock now. They might help me a little bit, but the main thing is going out there and giving it my all.

“The difference between my ASBK bike and World Supersport bike is around 10 to 15 horsepower. It’s not much, but enough to go a second or two a lap quicker.”

Bayliss will also be on track during the final official pre-season test on 24-25 February, just days before the Motul Superbike World Championship, Yamaha Finance round, at Phillip Island between 28 February and 1 March.

ASBK test allows Herfoss to confirm Michelin tyre selection

ASBK test allows Herfoss to confirm Michelin tyre selection

Michelin tyre impressive in first Phillip Island outing.

Troy Herfoss has revealed this week’s ASBK test at Phillip Island allowed him to confirm his tyre selection for the 2020 season, the multi-time champion satisfied with the early potential of the Michelin rubber.

The two-day test was Herfoss’ first hitout on the Michelin tyres against his rivals, lodging a number of impressive times to ultimately wind up third fastest at the end of testing on Thursday.

The Penrite Honda Racing rider believes he maximised his time out on track over the eight sessions, enabling him to gain a greater insight into the characteristics of his new tyre options.

“It was really good and we had a lot of stuff to work through,” Herfoss told CycleOnline.com. “We’ve been pretty lucky over the last few years with the same model bike and the same tyres, but while much of the bike is the same, we have the Michelin tyres this year.

“They’ve been out of ASBK competition for a number of years, so there’s a lot of work to be done being the only rider in the field using them at the moment. The Michelin tyre was really good, and we had a few tyres there. We have already done a test at Wakefield, so we had an idea of what sort of tyres we would need for the whole year, and we confirmed that over the two days.

“We did a lot of laps on the Phillip Island-spec tyre, and I posted all of my lap-times on the race tyre. I feel as the conditions were pretty warm, there’s a lot of potential to go a lot faster than what I was. In saying that, I was really happy with the lap-time, and overall based on my position compared to my competitors, it was by far the closest I’ve been to the front in the pre-season test, so that’s pretty positive.”

The opening round of the 2020 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship is scheduled for February 27-1 March at Phillip Island, taking place alongside round one of the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Farm Jam returns this weekend for 10th edition

Bereman headlines moto line-up for the unique action sports event.

Image: .

Words:

The bi-annual Farm Jam returns to action this weekend near Winton in New Zealand, marking the 10th edition of the unique action sports event.

It’s promising to be the biggest and best yet, with the 2020 instalment set to Tyler Bereman headline the moto line-up alongside familiar faces from Australia, such as Dylan Long and Lewis Woods.

“The interest that Farm Jam 2020 has gathered from the general public, riders and the industry is both exciting and encouraging,” said Farm Jam co-organiser Brett Frew. “Since we began in 2007, a lot of our growth has been organic and word-of-mouth. It’s taken countless hours and effort to get to this point, but when we see the smiles on the faces of both the riders and fans, it’s worth it.”

With gates opening on Saturday, Farm Jam co-organiser Dan Frew is looking forward to seeing some of the world’s best action sports athletes and world champions ride alongside a solid contingent of talented local riders.

“The biggest thing that differentiates the Farm Jam from other contests is the fact that there are no judges in towers scrutinising every run and trick,” he explained. “The Farm Jam is completely rider-judged, and regardless of whether you ride a dirt bike, BMX or mountain-bike, the camaraderie between everyone makes it very special.”

The Farm Jam gates at 738 Otapiri Gorge Rd, Winton, open at 11am local time with the contests taking place between noon and 6pm.

Yamaha signs Lorenzo to MotoGP testing role

Yamaha signs Lorenzo to MotoGP testing role

Three-time MotoGP world champion returns to the paddock at official test rider.

Image: Russell Colvin.

Recently retired multi-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo will return to Yamaha Factory Racing this MotoGP season in a testing role with the Japanese manufacturer.

The Spaniard made his debut in MotoGP with Yamaha in 2008 and spent nine years with the factory MotoGP team, winning all three of his premier class titles on the YZR-M1 in 2010, 2012, and 2015 respectively.

He transitioned to Ducati Team in 2017 and 2018, before moving to Repsol Honda last year where he ultimately called time on his career.

Starting from the MotoGP shakedown test at Sepang 2-4 February, Lorenzo will commence his role aboard YZR-M1. He will also take part in other official IRTA tests and some private Yamaha tests this year, with the sole aim to help Yamaha‘s engineers with the 2020 MotoGP development.

“I‘m very happy with the decision to join the Yamaha factory test team,” said Lorenzo. “I was always planning on staying involved in MotoGP and returning to the paddock, and I think this is a suitable role for me. I know the team and the M1 well. The Yamaha really suited my riding style, and it will be very interesting to ’meet up with my old bike again‘.

“Returning to Yamaha brings with it some good memories. We secured many podiums and victories, and three titles together, so we know where our strengths lie. I want to thank Yamaha for this opportunity, because this allows me to do what I love – riding motorbikes and pushing the limit – whilst enjoying a slightly calmer lifestyle than I did in previous years.

“I‘m very motivated to get to work and can‘t wait to start riding. I want to do my best for Yamaha‘s future, and I hope my riding experience will be helpful to Yamaha‘s engineers and riders to bring the title back to Yamaha.”

Yamaha Racing managing director Lin Jarvis added: “Of course, we are delighted to welcome Jorge back at Yamaha. When we knew that Jorge would stop his active racing career, we immediately started to consider making a proposal for him to join us.

“The statistics of his achievements with us in those nine years together speak for themselves. He is a vastly experienced MotoGP rider, who is closely familiar with the M1 and the people at Yamaha. We have come to know Jorge as a very precise and motivated rider, with flawless consistency and good technical insight: all the qualities you need in a test rider at this high level.

“Combining Jorge‘s experience, knowledge, and riding speed with experienced crew chief Silvano Galbusera is an important element in Yamaha‘s strategy to strengthen the Test Team, which aims to bridge the gap between the engineers and test riders in Japan and the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team.”

It’s understood no wildcard rides are planned for Lorenzo in 2020, but Yamaha is open to the possibility should he decide to race again.
