Sepang test a big step forward for MotoGP rookie Binder

Factory KTM pilot slashes gap to the pace-setters in Malaysia.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing newcomer Brad Binder is confident he’s made significant steps forward at the Sepang test, slashing the gap to the leaders from his first two outings on a MotoGP bike last year.

The premier class rookie, who was over two seconds off the pace at the pair of Spanish tests in 2019, moved to within a second of the pace-setters during the three-day test in Malaysia.

The South African wound up 21-18-17 fastest on the timesheets across the three days, where he continued to develop his set-up ahead Qatar’s season-opener next month.

“In the first two tests I was 2.1s off and now I am 0.7s,” Binder indicated. “It’s a big step forwards for us. The feeling and the comfort on the bike is way-better but we have a long, long way to go. I need to keep working and it will pay-off soon.

“If you look at the position then it is dissatisfying but the main thing is the gap. A couple of tenths have made a good difference in the standings. I have seen that it’s not too difficult to make a fast lap but I need to do twenty of them! It’s been a positive six days. We’ve progressed every day. We can reset and start again in Qatar.”

The next MotoGP outing is scheduled for 22 February in Qatar for the final pre-season test ahead of round one, slated for 8 March at the Losail circuit.

Training with reigning champion a boost for Baggett

California native earns first podium of the season in San Diego.

Blake Baggett has revealed training with reigning champion Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) in the lead up to San Diego played a role in landing his first podium of the season.

The Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM rider was highly-impressive at the sixth round of Monster Energy Supercross, claiming third in the second 450SX heat race before a brilliant performance in the 25-lap main saw him emerge in third position.

“I think the track was deteriorating fast [tonight], for sure – it was getting slicker every lap, and the holes in the whoops were getting worse,” Baggett commented. “I feel I had some spots where I was catching those guys a bit, and they were kind of playing cat and mouse, so that was allowing me to reel them in a bit.

“Then when I made a mistake, they’d gap back out. It was one of those nights where I left a little bit out there in some areas, but at the same time, I’ve been pretty far away from having a podium.

“I’m just happy to be up here, and a big thanks to KTM for letting me ride with them this week – I got to ride with Cooper and that’s helped a lot.”

Baggett has shifted to seventh in the standings ahead round seven of Supercross this weekend at Tampa in Florida.

San Diego Webb battle brought back memories says Cianciarulo

Factory Kawasaki rider returns to form at the sixth round of Supercross.

Adam Cianciarulo says his battle with Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) at the San Diego Monster Energy Supercross brought back memories of their rivalry in amateurs, the premier class rookie ultimately finishing runner-up at the sixth round.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki entry returned to impressive form at the Californian round, claiming victory in his heat race before controlling the field for 20 of the 25 laps in the main event.

He relinquished the lead to reigning champion Webb in the closing stages, however managed to hang on for this second podium of the season.

“Back in the day racing Cooper, obviously there were other guys, but when we went out there and raced each other, he was looking at me and I was looking at him,” Cianciarulo explained. “Now it’s funny that we were able to go 1-2 tonight. There are so many other people, you don’t really focus on one guy or you don’t really focus on any guy, but you know everyone is fast.

“It was cool that it came down to us tonight, and it kind of brought back some memories. It was super fun, and obviously I wish I would have won, but I didn’t deserve it.”

Cianciarulo sits fifth in the championship standings as the series heads East for the first time this year at Tampa in Florida.

Waters set to defend premier class crown on Maxxis tyres

Number one plate holder to use Maxxcross MX-ST tyre.

Reigning MX Nationals MX1 champion Todd Waters will defend his premier class crown while using the latest generation Maxxis tyres.

Waters, a former MXGP World Championship contender, will utilise the all-new Maxxcross MX-ST tyre that was recently introduced by A1 Accessory imports.

The Maxxcross MX-ST is a lightweight, motocross racing specific tyre designed with a uniquely spaced tread pattern designed to optimise traction, stability and braking performance.

“When it comes to choosing motocross tyres, rider comfort, feeling and grip are the most important areas I look for,” Waters commented. “I want as much confidence in my tyres as possible. When I was initially approached by Maxxis to test the new MX-ST tyres, I was honestly surprised at how comfortable I felt on them right away.

“Making the switch to Maxxis in 2020 was an easy decision – I’m excited to defend my MX1 championship and Maxxis will be a big part of that.”

A1 Accessory Imports marketing manger Aaron Marks added: “We’re really excited to have Todd join the Maxxis family. To hear Todd’s initial excitement about the all-new MX-ST tyre was really positive – it just reinforces the development and progression being made by Maxxis in the motocross segment.”

Waters is yet to publicly outline his deal for 2020, although he has confirmed he will be on Husqvarna machinery.

Updated Michelin tyre prompts tweaked riding style for Dovizioso

Italian contender still optimistic after three days at Sepang.

Image: Supplied.

Mission Winnow Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso has revealed he was forced to adapt his riding style to the new Michelin tyre that was rolled out at the Sepang test.

The Italian admitted he initially struggled to tweak the way he riders, ultimately winding up 14th on the timesheets during the third and final day of testing.

“I am quite satisfied with the work we have done today,” said Dovizioso. “This morning we were able to put in several laps, improving the bike setup and also my feeling with the new tyres. It had not been easy because I had to adapt my riding style, and I was struggling a lot with this in the beginning.

“Danilo and I did a few laps together – the pace was good, but the tyre performance dropped quite a lot. We still need to understand how they will work on a race distance and here in Sepang, where the conditions are peculiar due to the high temperatures, is really difficult to make a complete evaluation.

“Now we still have a test before the opening round of the season in Qatar. I am sure that the final classification of these three days doesn’t completely reflect what will happen in the championship this year.”

The next MotoGP outing is scheduled for 22 February in Qatar for the final pre-season test ahead of round one, slated for 8 March at the Losail circuit.

New YZR-M1 has more potential indicates Rossi

Image: Supplied.

Multi-time world champion Valentino Rossi believes the 2020 Yamaha YZR-M1 has greater potential than its predecessor following three days of testing in Malaysia.

The Italian legend experienced one of his stronger pre-season outings in recent years, dipping into the 1m58s lap times to finish fifth on the timesheets during the final day.

Despite the positive improvements, Rossi is still adamant there’s work to be done in order to build an advantage over his competitors.

“Everybody is very strong, very fast as always,” Rossi stated. “We are not so far from the top. The second day was better than the first day because we worked a lot on the new bike. We need some more experience and some more kilometres, but today we already found something good, especially for the grip, and the pace with the race tyre is positive.

“For me, the bike has better potential than last year, but we need to work because also the other manufacturers are making steps, and like I said before, they are very strong. So, we need to continue to work hard, but it looks like we’re heading in the right direction.”

Rossi will be out on track next on 22 February in Qatar for the final pre-season test ahead of round, scheduled for 8 March at the Losail circuit.

San Diego Supercross ‘damage control’ says Roczen

San Diego Supercross ‘damage control’ says Roczen

Team Honda HRC contender finishes sixth in California.

Image: Octopi Media.

Premier class points leader Ken Roczen admits he went into damage control at San Diego’s sixth round of Monster Energy Supercross, the number 94 hanging onto the red plate after finishing outside of the top five.

The Team Honda HRC rider looked set for another strong night, claiming a commanding victory in his heat race by over 11 seconds.

A less than stellar start put the German ace on the back foot in the 25-lap main event, however he struggled to progress forward alongside championship rival Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki), crossing the line in an uncharacteristic sixth.

“The night started off really well,” Roczen reflected. “I crushed it in the heat race and had an awesome start. Ultimately in the main, I got an okay but not great jump and just got sandwiched in the first turn and again in the second turn, losing four more positions.

“It made for a tough race. I also got stuck behind [Justin] Barcia and just wasn’t riding well. Then [Eli] Tomac got me and from there on out, I was just going backwards. I lost touch with the front guys and wasn’t that good.

“Unfortunately, as much as we don’t like it, we all have those races and we did some damage control. It’s obviously not where we want to be but we’re heading to the East Coast still with the points lead, so that’s a positive. It’s still a long season ahead.”

Roczen leads Tomac by one point as the series heads East this weekend at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Ferrandis rivalry just racing according to Forkner

Ferrandis rivalry just racing according to Forkner

250SX West title challenger runner-up at San Diego.

Austin Forkner has described his rivalry with Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing) as just racing despite coming off second-best to the Frenchman on consecutive weekends at San Diego’s Monster Energy Supercross.

Forkner has taken an understanding position on their heated battles over the last two weekends, explaining the nature and competitiveness of the 250SX West championship doesn’t allow for giving track space to rivals.

The Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider led a number of laps in the main event, ultimately losing out to Ferrandis to take home runner-up honours.

“You’re that close – it’s inches, hundredths of seconds and everything’s that close, which it has been for the last couple of weeks and all season,” Forkner explained. “Last weekend we would inch away, catch up – we all had our fast parts on the track.

“What’s he going to do? Follow me? You can’t. If you have this much, you have to take it – that’s what I did with Mosiman when I rode by him for the main – honestly, I jumped into the inside I didn’t know if I was going to make the pass. But I had to try – he (Ferrandis) was behind me, so I had to try. It’s racing – if you guys are close, you have to throw it in sometimes.”

Forkner sits third in the series standings as the 250SX West category returns to action on 28 March in Seattle.

Revised Honda deal sees Clout withdraw from the MX Nationals

Revised Honda deal sees Clout withdraw from the MX Nationals

Australian to remain in America for the remainder of Supercross.

Image: Octopi Media.

A revised contract with Penrite Honda Racing will see Luke Clout stay put in the 250SX West category of Monster Energy Supercross for the remainder of the season, prompting him to withdraw from the MX Nationals.

Clout, who was runner-up in the MX Nationals last year, was initially contracted to race the first six rounds of Supercross before returning home to contest the domestic motocross series with Penrite Honda Racing.

The New South Welshman’s impressive form in America, along with his desire to remain in the series, has seen his contract revised as supercross-only while also taking him through the 2021 season, where he’ll race Monster Energy Supercross and the Australian Supercross Championship.

“I didn’t know how this would go down,” Clout stated. “I was originally doing three to four rounds out of a van. We seriously setup and full professional program in America – Yarrive [Konsky] doesn’t like doing things by halves and he has really given us the greatest opportunity to prove ourselves.

“To Tony Hinton [at] Honda Australia and Toby Dymond [at] Penrite, I must say thank you. This is my dream and I believe we will only get better. I will be home later this year to race the Australian Supercross Championship.”

Team owner Yarrive Konsky added: “It makes sense to leave Luke in America, he’s getting more comfortable each week on the 250, he is committed to the program here and we hope the momentum will pay off. We have a strong local program back in Australia with Brett Metcalfe and Kyle Webster for motocross, and will announce our full supercross program in the coming months.”

Clout will continue to race alongside Mitchell Oldenburg as part of the team’s US arm, which will return to action at the next 250SX round scheduled for 28 March in Seattle.

Penrite Honda Racing will field Brett Metcalfe and Kyle Webster in the MX Nationals, set to kick off on 4-5 April at Horsham in Victoria.

Semmens joins Milner at KTM Enduro Racing Team

Semmens joins Milner at KTM Enduro Racing Team

Factory KTM confirms updated line-up for 2020 off-road season.

Image: Foremost Media.

KTM Enduro Racing Team will field defending national E2 champion Daniel Milner and E1 class newcomer Mason Semmens in the 2020 Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC).

Milner will pilot the brand new 2020 KTM 450 EXC-F as he defends his AORC E2 crown captured last season, in what will be his fourth-straight season with the factory KTM organisation.

The highly-successful 28-year-old is eager to return to racing after a lengthy off-season, while a positive round of recent testing has strengthened his confidence ahead of the AORC series-opener this month.

“I’m very excited for this season, being my fourth year with the KTM Enduro Racing Team and we’re obviously on the new 2020 model this year,” said Milner. “It’s a bit of a change this year from the previous bike, but I’ll still be on the KTM 450 EXC-F and I am confident in the package we have put together for the new season.

‘I’m ready to go racing, we’ve done a lot of testing over the summer, and it’s been good for me because I didn’t go to the International Six Days Enduro [ISDE] last year. Having that time off has fired me up – the pre-season that we’ve had has been a boost of confidence, that’s for sure.”

New to the KTM Enduro Racing Team, 18-year-old Semmens will transition from motocross to make a full-time switch to off-road this year, where he’ll be equipped with the 2020 KTM 250 SX-F in the E1 category.

The Victorian has participated in a mixture of enduro events in recent years, displaying his potential alongside an impressive haul of motocross and Hattah Desert Race results, including the Under 19s victory last year.

“Coming from motocross to enduro and getting the opportunity to join the KTM Enduro Racing Team is really exciting – it’s going to be a massive learning year for me in the AORC and also the A4DE,” Semmens explained.

“I have done quite a few off-road races before and have always raced Hattah, so it’s not completely new to me, but it will be an important year in my career and I am grateful for the opportunity. It’s definitely positive to be teamed up with Daniel Milner – one of the best in the world – and to learn from him, it couldn’t be better situation for me.”

Both Milner and Semmens will also compete in the Australian Four-Day Enduro (A4DE) and Hattah Desert Race with the KTM Enduro Racing Team in addition to their AORC commitments. KTM also welcomes experienced former national competitor Scott Keegan into the role of KTM Enduro Racing team coordinator ahead of the 2020 season, set to work closely with KTM motorsport manager Glenn Kearney.
