KYB testing the key takeaway for Webster in US trip

Western Australian returns from brief visit to America.

Penrite Honda Racing newcomer Kyle Webster has indicated that testing with KYB suspension was the key takeaway from his brief visit to America.

The MX2 title favourite linked up with the American arm of Penrite Honda Racing in the States, where he managed to ride twice in a week-long stay.

Despite the relatively minimal bike time, the 23-year-old believes he made headway in his suspension development, and is now awaiting the arrival of an updated KYB set-up to use locally in Australia.

“I think it was a good experience to be there and see how they do it,” Webster explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “I’m really happy with my program here in Australia, so it’s hard to see where I could make it better.

“But, I ended up doing some suspension testing with KYB over there, so my bike’s handling really well and I’m looking forward to getting it back here – I think that will make it better.

“I’m not too crazy about suspension set-up, and those guys do it every day, so it was cool for me. I rode Pala and State Fair, so they were two completely different tracks – I found the bike worked really well at both them, and that’s what I’m looking for – I want my bike to be able to work well everywhere.”

Webster will race rounds two and three of the New Zealand Motocross Championship before Horsham’s opening round of the MX Nationals, scheduled for 4-5 April.

French teenager Brian Moreau has undergone surgery to repair a fractured vertebra following a serious incident in the opening 250SX East practice at Tampa’s Monster Energy Supercross round on Saturday.

According to information released by TLD Red Bull KTM this afternoon, Moreau is currently in a stable condition and is awaiting further information from doctors regarding the extent of his injury.

The Moreau family released an update on Sunday morning via social media stating: “Hit in the vertebrae, Brian had surgery last night at Tampa hospital. Surgery is good and Brian woke up. He is currently in intensive care, but doctors will not be able to decide on his condition in several days. Brian is a very brave and strong boy and is aware of everything!”

TLD Red Bull KTM owner Troy Lee commented: “Brian is a very tough kid and we know he will tackle this injury and do whatever he can to make a full recovery. Everyone at Troy Lee Designs and KTM are fully supporting his recovery every step of the way.

“I want to also thank both Marvin and Mathilde Musquin for all the support they have given Brian from the very first day he showed up in California. Mathilde has been at the hospital with Brian since his crash and has been amazing to work with during this difficult time.”

A former EMX125 champion in 2017, Moreau was a regular in the MX2 World Championship last year and scored multiple top 10 results prior to attracting the attention of TLD Red Bull KTM. He has also been a fixture at the off-season supercross events in Europe during recents years.

The Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) paddock has united to stage a charity auction in aid of the victims of the recent Australian bushfires ahead of the 2020 season opener at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit next weekend.

The funds raised will go to BlazeAid, a volunteer-based set-up working alongside rural families and individuals impacted by the fires and floods. Since being founded in 2009, they’ve worked with over 20,000 volunteers in tackling bushfires.

The WorldSBK auction is organised through CharityStars and will see an incredible selection of rider and team merchandise and memorabilia – as well as some awesome fan experiences – go under the hammer.

The championship, riders and teams have come together during the recent tests at Jerez and Portimao to source their own gear, with exclusive helmets, leathers, gloves and various other ‘money-can’t-buy’ team apparel clothing set to get auctioned.

Newcomer Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) is one headliner as he offers up his leathers from testing, and they join the likes of teammate Chaz Davies’ helmet and Toprak Razgatlioglu’s (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team) gloves and visor.

Reigning champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) has also donated gloves and boots, with multiple race winner Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team) putting in some knee sliders, a visor and boots. BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team’s mudguard hand-signed by Tom Sykes and teammate Eugene Laverty is another highlight.

There are also some experiences up for grabs as Dorna WSBK organization offers exclusive pit lounge passes and behind the scenes experiences, perfect for every WorldSBK fan who wants to get up close and personal with the world’s fastest production-based motorcycle racing Championship.

They include two pairs of WorldSBK Pit Lounge Passes to any 2020 round (winning bidder’s choice) and one pair of WorldSBK Behind the Scenes Experience passes, giving the winning bidder a money-can’t-buy weekend from starting grid access to a lap in the Safety Car and plenty more in between.

The auction begins on 17 February and ends on 3 March, so get bidding to secure your piece of WorldSBK history – and lend a helping hand to the host country of the 2020 season opener. Check out the full list of items and head to www.charitystars.com/bushfiresaction to place your bids.

Yamaha Racing Team to debut updated 2020 R1 at Phillip Island

Halliday confident the updated package will be beneficial for round one.

Yamaha Racing Team will debut the updated 2020 R1 at Phillip Island’s opening round of the Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) after an initial test last week at Wakefield Park yielded positive results according to Cru Halliday.

The 2018 Supersport champion rolled out the revised Superbike contender in ASBK trim alongside teammate Aiden Wagner at the New South Wales venue, where they evaluated if the package was at an adequate level to start the championship.

Halliday admits he adapted quickly to the bike, and believes the boost in power thanks to an upgraded engine and electronics package will be beneficial for the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit.

“We will be starting the year on the 2020 R1,” Halliday confirmed to CycleOnline.com.au. “A bit more power down the first straight will definitely help us [at Phillip Island]. I gelled really quickly with the bike, and I think Aiden did as well. It’s going to be exciting, and the new livery looks good too, so it’s a whole new package and new look.

“The bike was flawless – it felt like I had been riding it all season. It’s a very comfortable bike, and there’s a lot more bottom end in the engine. The electronic throttle is pretty good – it’s a bit strange at first, but once you get used, I actually prefer it now.

“I was just getting my head around the new electronics on the bike, but also in the back of my mind I was thinking I can’t crash it. It was a pretty good day.”

The ASBK opener, which will run in conjunction with the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK), will be staged over 28 February-1 March.

French podium reassures Febvre ahead of MXGP assault

French podium reassures Febvre ahead of MXGP assault

Former world champion returns to form at Lacapelle Marival.

A podium result at the Mastercross Lacapelle Marival in France has reassured Romain Febvre as he plots a return to the MXGP World Championship after his 2019 campaign was shortened due to injury.

The Frenchman, who’s made the high-profile move to Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing for 2020, broke his femur at the Uddevalla grand prix in August last year.

Febvre made his Kawasaki debut last month in Italy, where he scored 14-11 race results. The former world champion has gone onto make significant improvements at the French pre-season event, recording a 6-2 scorecard for third overall, finishing behind Jeremy Seewer (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) and Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing).

“It’s a great feeling to have such a strong day with good starts, good lap time and podium results,” said Febvre. “We have worked a lot with Jacky [Vimond] and I have made a lot of progress since Riola three weeks ago.

“I love my KX450-SR and we saw today that I got good starts even if this one here is really short to the first turn. I can say that tonight I am reassured – now we’ll go back home and practice on several different tracks to be ready for Matterley Basin.”

The opening round of the MXGP World Championship is scheduled for 1 March at Matterley Basin in Great Britain.

Lacapelle Marival runner-up a timely boost for Beaton

Factory Husqvarna rider performs strongly at pre-season event in France.

A runner-up result at the Mastercross Lacapelle Marival event in France has offered Jed Beaton a timely boost of confidence ahead of the 2020 MX2 World Championship.

The Tasmanian rode strongly throughout the French pre-season race, going onto record a 3-2 scorecard for second overall behind Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle.

The podium has put the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing entry in a positive frame of mind for Great Britain’s season-opener in two weeks’ time, the Australian bouncing back from an injury-riddled 2019.

“I’m pretty pleased with the way today went,” Beaton commented. “It’s really nice to get to race a pre-season event that’s not super wet and is in good condition and has good grip. The two motos went well enough for me. In the first race I didn’t get the best of starts, I think I was down in fifth or sixth before getting up to third.

“I stayed there for quite a few laps, before the top two guys got into the lappers. It got pretty intense there for a while and I was able to close up a lot. Third was a good result. I took a little while to get into a rhythm in the second race although I was in second for most of the time.

“I felt like I rode a lot better in the second half and to finish second overall is positive ahead of the first GP in a couple of weeks.”

Fellow Australians and Team Honda 114 Motorsports teammates Nathan Crawford and Bailey Malkiewicz were fifth and 29th respectively in the MX2 category.

Stauffer graduates to Supersport in newly-formed GTR MotoStars Team

Stauffer graduates to Supersport in newly-formed GTR MotoStars Team

Brand new ASBK team to field McDonald in Supersport 300.

Image: Supplied.

Max Stauffer will graduate to the Supersport category in the 2020 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) with the newly-formed GTR MotoStars Team, which will also field Archie McDonald in the Supersport 300 class.

The team has been established through former FX Pro Twins champion Heath Griffin and MotoStars founder Damian Cudlin, where a Yamaha-supported program will see the outfit represented across the Supersport, Supersport 300 and Yamaha R3 Cup categories.

Stauffer, who scored a number of Supersport 300 and R3 Cup race wins in 2019, will step-up to Supersport aboard the Yamaha YZF-R6.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to race with the GTR MotoStars Team and I want to learn as much as I can in 2020,” said Stauffer. “Working with guys like Heath, Damo, and of course my Dad, Jamie, is a dream come true. I’m really excited to step up to the 600 class and I hope to mix it up at the pointy end as soon as I can.”

13-year-old McDonald, a current Australian Junior Dirt Track champion, contested the inaugural Oceania Junior Cup in 2019 where a selection of race wins led to the fourth in the series standings.

“I’m absolutely thrilled and immensely proud to represent the GTR MotoStars Team in 2020,” McDonald commented. “I come from a humble dirt track background and am still relatively new to road racing.

“I raced in the OJC last year and always maintained a strong dedication to the MotoStars training and coaching days under the guidance of Damian Cudlin. Having the opportunity to work with him again, Heath Griffin and Jamie Stauffer, while being teamed up with Max Stauffer is every kid’s dream. I have to thank everyone who’s helped me reach this point and I can’t wait for round one.”

Team co-founder Cudlin added: “Since the inception of MotoStars, I’ve worked with plenty of talent here in Australia that just needs more opportunities to succeed. When Heath came to me with the idea of building a pathway for riders from MotoStars to ASBK, I was keen to be a part of it, and thankfully Yamaha and a host of our sponsors were too.

“Archie and Max have both been regulars at MotoStars events and have made an impact already within ASBK. I’m excited to see what they can achieve this year with a bit of help and support.”

The opening round of the Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) kicks off on 28 February-1 March at Phillip Island, which will run in conjunction with the round one of the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Tomac takes charge with pivotal Tampa Supercross victory

Controlled win for McElrath in 250SX East opener on Yamaha debut.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac has taken over the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross points-lead following a pivotal victory in round seven at Tampa.

Tomac eased to a 7.290s advantage for his third win of the season, topping reigning champion Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM) and Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC).

At the beginning it was Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) who led the way before Tomac made his move right before halfway. A few laps later, a costly crash saw Cianciarulo bumped from podium contention altogether.

That enabled Webb to climb into second position and Roczen eventually made his way to the podium despite a small crash of his own around the same time that Cianciarulo went down.

Fourth was a deserved result for Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) after completing lap one in P14, while fifth came Justin Hill (Smartop Bullfrog Spas MotoConcepts Honda) in his best result of the year.

Behind Hill came Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), Malcolm Stewart (Smartop Bullfrog Spas MotoConcepts Honda) – who was inside the top three for much of the duration – and Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), who was unable to make a pass stick on Stewart.

Cianciarulo finally crossed the line in ninth place, while Justin Brayton (Team Honda HRC) was 10th. Behind Zach Osborne (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), Broc Tickle (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki) made his return to racing at the St. Jude round with a 12th-place effort. Chad Reed (Mountain Motorsports cbdMD CR22 Honda) took 19th.

Monster Energy Supercross now travels to Arlington in Texas for round eight of the 2020 season on Saturday, 22 February, with Tomac atop the standings, four points ahead of Roczen and with Webb a further seven behind in third.

The opening round of 250SX East has been won by Shane McElrath in a commanding first appearance with Monster Energy Star Yamaha.

McElrath has switched teams and moved his attention to the eastern region, leading from start to finish aboard the factory-backed YZ250F.

Trailing McElrath by 2.962s at race’s end was defending champion Chase Sexton, who worked his way by Geico Honda teammate Jeremy Martin early and that’s the way they would stay.

Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki pair Garrett Marchbanks and Jordon Smith were in formation for fourth and fifth, taking advantage of a late error from RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) for position.

Completing the top 10 tonight was Arenacross series leader Kyle Peters (Phoenix Racing Honda), Joey Crown (Yamaha), the injured Jimmy Decotis (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki) and newcomer Jo Shimoda (Geico Honda).

Next for the 250SX East championship will be Arlington, Texas, next Saturday night on 22 February, where McElrath will wear the red plate with a three-point advantage over Sexton.

Supercross debut of Hunter Lawrence remains up in the air

Supercross debut of Hunter Lawrence remains up in the air

Australian still healing from shoulder surgery as 250SX East series arrives.

Image: Supplied.

Highly-rated Geico Honda standout Hunter Lawrence is yet to determine if he will be fit to contest any rounds of 2020 Monster Energy Supercross, which will see the gates drop on 250SX East in Tampa this Saturday night.

Lawrence, 20, continues to recover from extensive shoulder injuries sustained in December and hasn’t yet been cleared to return to riding after undergoing surgery.

An incident while riding at the Honda test track in Southern California was the cause of Lawrence’s latest injury, which will likely delay his Supercross debut altogether for another season.

“What I did was, I tore my rotator cuff and labrum in my left shoulder,” Lawrence told MotoOnline.com. “I smashed the humerus in my shoulder as well, so I had surgery the day after Christmas and have been training every single day since then.

“We’ve invested a lot in physio and stuff away from the bike just to get back, try and make – if not round one – some of the rounds. We tried doing everything we could, but I had a doctor’s appointment and he said it’s looking great, but it’s a case of what if… They would love to see it have another three weeks just to heal.

“It’s really a three-month injury, but I’ve already been mountain-biking for the past three weeks and it feels solid, really good. I was ready to get back on the bike, but they don’t think the risk is worth it and the crew in my circle feels the same.”

Planning to get back on the bike outdoors and then assess his fitness next month will determine if Lawrence will be able to make any 250SX rounds before the end of the year. If there is only a limited amount of rounds remaining once he’s ready, instead expect a return to competition at Hangtown’s Lucas Oil Pro Motocross opener on 17 May.

“As of now we’re not 100 percent sure, because I’m not going to come back and race Supercross if I’m at 70 or 80 percent,” he explained. “It’d be great to get gate-drops, but at the same time I feel like I’m nothing less than a contender and a guy to go for a title at this point of my career. I don’t want to do anything less than that.

“My goal was originally Daytona, which wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do now that I haven’t been given the okay by doctors. There are too many variables with the unexpected when racing, so for sure, I’m bummed – I love Supercross with a passion and would love to be able to race it this year, but that’s not how it’s gone for me.”

If he isn’t able to make it back in time for the latter stages of the 250SX East series this season, Lawrence – who is now based in Florida – has indicated he will look to gain off-season experience amongst a series of international races prior to 2021.
