Roberts comeback still on-track with 2020 deal to be finalised

New South Welshman ensures he’ll be at Horsham’s season-opener.

Jy Roberts has indicated his comeback from a serious head injury is still on-track despite not being named in the new-look Recover8 KTM Thor squad that was announced over the weekend, the New South Welshman revealing he has a deal in place for the upcoming MXstore MX Nationals.

The MX2 race winner, who was part of the Raceline Motorsport-operated team in 2019, was practicing when he suffered a serious accident in April last year, resulting in a head injury that saw him spend eight days in a self-induced coma.

Making a remarkable recovery and return to riding in September 2019 that stunned specialists, Roberts has ensured he’ll be on the line for Horsham’s season-opener next month, which marks 12 months since his accident.

“I’ll definitely be lining up at round one, for sure,” Roberts told MotoOnline.com.au. “I’ve got a deal, I’m just trying to finalise it 100 percent now. I’ve got bikes and everything, but I can’t put anything out there until all the sponsors are sorted. I’ve got a solid deal which I’m hoping to announce pretty soon.

“I’ve obviously had a massive amount of time off from racing and away from the MX Nationals, so every day I’m just making sure I’m working hard and going to be 100 percent ready for round one.

“I’m just keen to get back behind the gate and race with all the boys again – I don’t have any expectations, I just want to be at all nine rounds fit and healthy, and just see where I end up. I’m not putting any pressure on myself, and there’s no pressure from my family or the team.”

Roberts claimed victory at the season-opener last year and was positioned second in the points standings prior to sustaining his injury. The MX Nationals kicks off on 4-5 April at Horsham in Victoria.

Waters exceeded expectations with double AORC podium on debut

Waters exceeded expectations with double AORC podium on debut

Husqvarna pilot notches pair of runner-up finishes in the E2 category.

Australian MX1 champion Todd Waters says he exceeded expectations in his Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship debut at Toowoomba on the weekend, the Queenslander earning a double podium in the E2 category.

The Husqvarna-supported rider admits he wasn’t sure what to expect, however he displayed immediate competitiveness in his first off-road hit-out, finishing second in the E2 class across both days.

Waters also wound up third outright behind world-class talents Daniel Sanders (Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team) and Daniel Milner (KTM Enduro Racing Team) during rounds one and two.

“To be honest I rode better than I expected,” Waters admitted. “I was stoked to podium in the opening rounds considering our lack of preparation. I had no idea what I was in for, the goal was to just get a feel for the AORC and build from there.

“I can’t thank Husqvarna Motorcycles Australia and all my other sponsors enough for their support in allowing me to compete in the off-road scene. We have a few weeks to the next round in Dungog, New South Wales.

“I’m excited to make some major changes to my bike setup and try and get my head around the next race format. The series is definitely going to keep me on my toes and be a useful distraction from motocross when it starts to get a bit repetitive. On a side note, I couldn’t have felt more welcomed into the Australian off-road scene.”

Waters sits second in the E2 standings as the series heads to Dungog in New South Wales on 14-15 March.

Waters launches JW Racing for 2020 ASBK campaign

Waters launches JW Racing for 2020 ASBK campaign

Multi-time champion outlines plans as Phillip Island’s opener looms.

Three-time champion Josh Waters has outlined his plans for the 2020 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), launching his own JW Racing team that will see him pilot Suzuki machinery.

The Victorian was initially signed to the former Team Suzuki Ecstar squad for this season alongside Wayne Maxwell, however the outfit made a shock exit from the sport after Suzuki withdrew its support.

Waters, who’ll be equipped with Dunlop tyres this year, is set to race a Suzuki GSX-R1000R that’s a similar specification to what he rode to the 2017 ASBK title.

“I’m just so stoked to have my own team and bikes this season, we’ve got great guys working on the bikes locally and a wealth of experience in the team which is exciting,” Waters explained.

“In the crew I’ve got Brodie [Waters] who’s going to prep my bikes, so he’s my mechanic and crew chief. Vaughan Cumming is also helping out as a mechanic, and then I’ve Byron Draper who’s helping out with the suspension. The floater will be my brother Nicholas [Waters], but he’s hit and miss with the rounds he can make.

“Dunlop has a good plan for the coming year, so it’s really worked out. I’m really looking forward to be successful with Dunlop onboard.”

Waters has had a strong connection with Suzuki throughout his career, winning his ASBK titles in 2009, 2012 and 2017 with the Japanese manufacturer. The ASBK series kicks off this weekend at Phillip Island alongside the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship.

Vinales edges Morbidelli on final day of Qatar MotoGP test

Rins third as Miller winds up fifth on the timesheets.

Image: Supplied.

Day three of MotoGP testing at Qatar saw Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s Maverick Vinales emerge fastest, narrowly edging out Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) and Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar).

Vinales set the pace with a 1m53.858s to head the field, while Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) wasn’t too far behind, just 0.033s in arrears, with Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) in third a couple of tenths back. Fourth went to Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT), as the inline-fours came out on top.

At Yamaha, the day three timesheets made for good reading and even more so overall, as Quartararo was third fastest in the combined standings. Vinales has looked like the man with the threatening race pace with Quartararo extremely close to him, Morbidelli has been consistently quick and Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) seems happy and fast despite not being quite as far up the order (P12 overall).

It wasn’t all perfect reading for the Iwata marque though. Quartararo suffered a technical issue on Sunday and on Monday, and Rossi crashed on day three – rider okay. Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP team director Massimo Meregalli was pleased with the progress made with improved grip and on acceleration, saying the 2020 package ‘is very competitive’.

Quartararo said his race simulation on day three was very pleasing, pretty much every lap was in the 1:54s and the Frenchman didn’t go for a proper time attack – the 20-year-old going as far as saying ‘there’s margin for more’. That bodes very well for the 2019 Rookie of the Year.

The main job for Team Suzuki Ecstar, meanwhile, was to continue comparing the standard and new chassis, nothing radically new was on the GSX-RRs of Rins and Joan Mir as they focused on the finer details: adjustments in setup and gathering data for the race.

Mir was sixth on day three and the combined timesheets. Along with Yamaha, Suzuki look arguably in the best shape ahead of the Qatar GP with both the Sepang and Qatar Tests proving very good for the Hamamatsu factory. Rins confirmed he is ‘so happy’ with the work done over the three days at Losail International Circuit – and Mir echoed his thoughts too.

Breaking the domination in the top five was a job for Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) on day three. The Australian was the top Ducati in fifth, 0.247s off the top, and said he completed a couple of time attacks and two longer runs. The number 43 is ‘quietly confident’ heading into the opening weekend of the season, and clocked the fastest-ever top speed at Losail, a ridiculous 355kph.

In the Bologna factory camp, Danilo Petrucci (Ducati Team) was sporting new front aero on one of his bikes, while his other GP20 had the older aero fitted. The Italian said he was pleased with his 22-lap race simulation on day three, but the one-lap pace still needs work ahead of the grand prix. Teammate Andrea Dovizioso was still trying the new swingarm.

Ducati Team manager Davide Tardozzi said the engine is working very well but corner speed – especially on maximum lean angle at the apex – still needs work. In addition, Tardozzi said they are experiencing some issues adapting to Michelin’s new rear tyre.

After finishing P6 on day two, Johann Zarco (Reale Avintia Racing) didn’t improve his time as the Frenchman finished P14 overall, two places ahead of Petrucci, with Dovizioso – who was happy with his long run pace – P10 and Francesco Bagnaia (Pramac Racing) P11. Tito Rabat (Reale Avintia Racing) was just 0.040s off Petrucci’s time.

It was a busy and intriguing day for reigning champions Honda as Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) started with three bikes in his garage, one of those being Takaaki Nakagami’s (LCR Honda Idemitsu) 2019 RC213V. Marquez was seventh overall, Nakagami less than a tenth off.

Nakagami’s teammate Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) completed 70 laps as HRC went in search of finding improvements on the final day in Qatar, with the Japanese giants testing things ‘from two or three years ago; according to Repsol Honda team manager Alberto Puig. Crutchlow said he was happy with his pace, but over one or two laps the number 35 is struggling with stopping the bike and grip with the new tyre.

Premier class rookie Alex Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) completed another 47 laps as the Spaniard admitted it was a difficult test for himself and the team, but the reigning Moto2 world champion was reasonably confident that he has a decent pace for the race weekend.

One of the riders of the test based on timesheets alone has to be Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rookie Brad Binder, however. The South African slammed in a mighty impressive 1m54.283s on day three to leave him ninth on the combined and day three times, just 0.425s from Vinales’ pacesetting lap.

As his teammate Pol Espargaro explained earlier in the test, KTM didn’t have anything new to try on day three as they don’t want to start getting lost. Working for the race was the Austrian factory’s objective as it seems their initial 2020 base is pretty much sorted, however there was a slight blip for Espargaro on the final day as he crashed unhurt at turn two.

Over in the Red Bull KTM Tech 3 camp, Miguel Oliveira and premier class rookie Iker Lecuona finished P19 and P20, but the gaps were only 1.150s and 1.443s respectively.

Speaking to motogp.com’s pitlane reporter Simon Crafar on day three, Aprilia Racing Technical Director Romano Albesiano confirmed their sole purpose was to decide on the engine spec they’ll use for the season.

At the end of play, Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) finished P13 on the timesheets, just over half a second off Vinales, with test rider Bradley Smith completing a further 55 laps on Monday as Aprilia continue to gather crucial data on their brand new RS-GP. Espargaro said he showed a strong pace on race simulation, lapping in mid-1m54s for plenty of laps was good news for the number 41. A busy test for both riders means Aprilia have a lot of analysing to do before the Qatar GP…

The series returns to Qatar on 8 March for the season-opening round.

Razgatlioglu set a blistering lap of 1m30.740s to surge to the top of the times, while Sykes and Baz set times 1m30.762s and 1m30.777s respectively.

Five-time defending champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) was fourth with a time of 1m30.996s, while the top five was completed by Leon Haslam (Team HRC) with a 1m30.996s lap.

Sixth went to WorldSBK rookie Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), followed by Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha), Eugene Laverty (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK), Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati). Regular front-runner Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) was 15th.

In WorldSSP, rookie Andrea Locatelli (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team) set the pace with a lap of 1ms33.336s, edging out reigning champion Randy Krummenacher (MV Agusta Reparto Corse), whose fastest time was 1m33.638s.

Raffaele De Rosa (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) was third with a time of 1m33.671s, while the top five was rounded out by Isaac Vinales (Kallio Racing) and Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing). Australian wildcard Oli Bayliss (Cube Racing) was 16th fastest with a time of 1m35.918s.

E1 leader Semmens surprised himself with Toowoomba performance

E1 leader Semmens surprised himself with Toowoomba performance

Factory KTM rider lands 2-1 finish at Queensland’s opener.

Image: Foremost Media.

KTM Enduro Racing Team newcomer Mason Semmens admits he surprised himself in his maiden outing at Toowoomba’s opening rounds of the 2020 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC), the Victorian exiting the Queensland stop with the E1 points lead.

Semmens, who’s transitioned from racing motocross this season, was highly-impressive in his factory KTM debut, finishing Saturday’s round one second in the E1 category for sixth outright.

He went one better on Sunday to capitalise on an error of two-time champion Luke Styke (Yamaha Active8 Yamalube Racing) to secure victory in the class, while he was once again ranked sixth on the outright timesheets.

“To get 2-1 results and take the points-lead over the weekend in my first race with the KTM Enduro Racing Team is a really good feeling,” Semmens commented. “I wasn’t sure where I was going to be at coming into the first round, but the hard work that we did in the off-season showed and I surprised myself a little bit.

“I’m learning every time I go out and really tried to minimise mistakes, so it was good and I’m really fortunate to be teammates with Milner. Everything has been awesome and I’m definitely feeling comfortable on the KTM 250 SX-F.”

The youthful talent holds a two-point advantage over Styke as the series heads to Dungog in New South Wales on 14-15 March.

Dobson joins Ferris at new-look Recover8 KTM Thor squad

Raceline Motorsport-operated squad to field Dobson in MX2 this year.

Image: Foremost Media.

A new-look Recover8 KTM Thor team has announced Jesse Dobson will join triple Australian champion Dean Ferris for the 2020 MXstore MX Nationals, the long-time premier class contender set to make a maiden assault in the MX2 category.

The Raceline Motorsport-operated outfit will revert to a two-rider squad for this upcoming season, with the signing of Dobson completing the team after Ferris previously declared his intentions to go racing with the KTM team.

Dobson, who graduated straight to MX1 from MXD in 2014, will pilot a KTM 250 SX-F for his first-ever campaign in the quarter-litre division.

“It’s actually so refreshing, and I’m so excited to go racing,” Dobson explained on the Inside Dirt podcast, which hosted the team announcement live on the Gold Coast over the weekend. “When this deal first came about, I thought about the 250 and I was like ‘ah’, but I had a couple of weeks to sit on it, and then I was like ‘yep, I want to do this’.

“It’s refreshing you know, because now I’m going to the start line and I want to line-up and win every single race. I’ve always trained to win, but these guys in the 450 class – Dean [Ferris], Todd [Waters], [Kirk Gibbs] Gibbsy, [Brett] Metcalfe – these are world-class riders.

“On a 250, I’m now going to the line to win – and I want to win everything and I believe I can win, and I’m going to loud and clear about it – I’m not going down to a 250 to come second, I’m going there and I want to win. It’s refreshing and I’m really looking forward to the year.”

The announcement indicates the departure of MXD champion and Australian MXoN representative Regan Duffy, who’s tipped to pilot Husqvarna machinery alongside MX1 champion Todd Waters. The Recover8 KTM Thor team will debut its new riders and look at Horsham’s season-opener on 4-5 April in Victoria.

MXstore named as 2020 MX Nationals title sponsor

Dirt bike retail giant elevates support for this season.

Image: Foremost Media.

MX Nationals promoter Kevin Williams has revealed Australian dirt bike retail giant MXstore will be the title sponsor of the 2020 series.

Williams made the announcement at the store’s all-new showroom at the Gold Coast on Saturday, where a special grand opening was hosted for the public.

MXstore’s move as naming rights sponsor comes after multiple years as a partner of the series, the company taking the position vacated by Pirelli.

“We’re delighted – the guys have been partnering with us over a number of years already,” Williams stated on the Inside Dirt podcast. “Clearly the market at the moment is tight, but you look here today, there are several hundred people at a time coming through.

“They’re investing heavily [in the sport], sponsoring the AORC and Motocross of Nations – they’re well committed and they’re connected to so many brands.

“They’re a great fit for us – they’ve continued to support a lot of clubs across Australia – not only are they delivering products all around Australia, but they’re [also] supporting the sport all around Australia.”

The 2020 MXstore MX Nationals will consist of nine rounds hosted over six weekends, with the season-opener scheduled for 4-5 April at Horsham in Victoria.

Aprilia Racing signs Savadori as MotoGP test rider

Italian ace to boost development of the newly-introduced 2020 RS-GP.

Image: Supplied.

Aprilia Racing has signed Lorenzo Savadori as an official test rider for the 2020 MotoGP World Championship season.

Savadori will play a role in the development of the newly-introduced 2020 RS-GP, while also racing in the CIV Italian Championship aboard the Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory.

The Italian was already on the new V4 prototype during the Sepang MotoGP tests, the strong outcome of that test and the big job of development that awaits the new bike were the key elements in the decision taken by Aprilia Racing and Lorenzo in launching their collaboration.

“I am truly very happy to continue racing for Aprilia Racing,” said Savadori. “The role of MotoGP tester lets me get close to this category, which is the maximum expression of world motorcycle racing. I am honoured and pleased to be part of this project.

“I wish to thank all of Aprilia Racing and everyone who made this opportunity possible. Now I can’t wait to get started – the Italian championship will also be at a very high level this season. Along with Nuova M2 Racing, we’ll be working very hard and passionately to hold the new RSV4 Factory 1100 high.”

With Andrea Iannone still provisionally suspended, speculation has linked current test rider Bradley Smith to assume his role in the championship alongside Aleix Espargaro.
