Multi-time Monster Energy Supercross and Lucas Oil Pro Motocross champion Ryan Dungey has withdrawn from his partnership with Geico Honda, which comes less than three months after he was named as a part-owner of the Factory Connection Racing squad.

Dungey cited the commitment required to the role was larger than what he could offer at this point in time, prompting him to part ways with the factory-backed Honda team halfway through the current

“After months spent with the Factory Connection Racing team and discussions with the team owners, it’s tough to say we will be discontinuing our relationship,” Dungey said in a statement. “I found this is to be a larger commitment than I can give it at this stage in my life.

“It’s not in my style to do a job halfway, nor is it fair to the team to not get the full efforts that they deserve. My overall impression of the team is very high. I’m grateful for the time they gave me and how much Jeff Majkrzak and Rick Zielfelder helped me in my life journey. I hope for continued success for the team and the Honda organization.

Team owner Richard Zielfelder added: “When we joined with Ryan just under three months ago, we had high hopes for our partnership, and we’re sorry to see it end prematurely. That said, we understand the significant travel and time commitments that come with team ownership, and we respect Ryan for recognizing that it wasn’t something he was prepared to do long-term.

“In addition to being a great champion, Ryan is a true professional, and it has been a pleasure to work together during this brief period. We wish him all the best going forward, and we look forward to seeing him at the races.”

An overall victory at Rotorua’s second round of the 2020 New Zealand Motocross Championship has uplifted Kirk Gibbs’ spirits, the former champion edging closer to points leader Cody Cooper (Honda Racing).

The Altherm JCR Yamaha rider recorded a 2-1-1 scorecard, with a heroic performance in race two seeing him bounce back from 17th to secure a pivotal race win.

“I was frustrated with myself and just wanted to be in the fight, so I pushed really hard and caught all the way back up to Hamish [Harwood] and Coops [Cody Cooper] and was able to pass both of them and get the win, so I was really happy with that one,” Gibbs explained.

“I’m really happy with the Altherm JCR Yamaha team and my team at home [in the Sunshine Coast], who are working hard in between rounds. I’m stoked with how today ended up.”

It was Cooper and Hamish Harwood (CML Motorex KTM) who locked out the podium, while the MX2 category was topped by Josiah Natzke (Kawasaki) ahead of Maximus Purvis (Altherm JCR Yamaha) and James Scott (KTM).

Qatar testing form surprised MotoGP rookie Binder

Red Bull KTM rider impresses with ninth fastest lap-time.

MotoGP rookie Brad Binder admits he was surprised by his form on the final day of testing at Qatar, where he wound up ninth on the timesheets and just 0.425s off pace-setter Maverick Vinales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP).

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider set the ninth fastest time on Monday with a lap of 1m54.283s, which came after a number of set-up changes sorted the challenges he previously faced.

“I was quite surprised to be honest,” Binder commented. “I felt comfortable and we made some changes today that helped me a lot and sorted many of my issues. I put in a new set of tyres and ‘bam!’ the lap-time came. The bike was good.

“I felt way more comfortable to get it stopped, turned quicker and also get on the throttle earlier. Once we figured that part out then it was a lot easier to put a fast lap together but it was still quite difficult to do 22 of them, so I have a long way to go! We made some good steps these three days and the team has been awesome. I’m looking forward to continuing at the GP.”

The South African was 0.340s quicker than teammate and long-time KTM pilot Pol Espargaro, who was 14th on the timesheets on day three.

Lowes faced with set-up challenge ahead of Phillip Island

Lowes faced with set-up challenge ahead of Phillip Island

British contender reaches base setting in final session of testing.

Kawasaki Racing Team newcomer Alex Lowes admits he’s struggled to come to terms with his set-up at Phillip Island’s Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (Worldsbk) test, the British ace set to make his racing debut with the squad this weekend.

Lowes, who’s transferred from Pata Yamaha to Kawasaki for the 2020 season, revealed his feeling at the Australian venue wasn’t the same as what he experienced at the previous tests, prompting him to make a number set-up changes throughout the two days.

The number 22 was able to establish a base setting in the final session on Tuesday afternoon, promoting a hint of optimism leading into round one.

“Obviously it has not been as easy to find the right feeling and set-up on the bike as I would have liked coming here but also it is the first time on the bike on such a strange track layout,” Lowes explained.

“It is so fast here, with lots of changes of direction. How I felt on the bike earlier in the winter tests was not quite the same here, so we worked a bit on the set-up.

“I got a little bit frustrated a couple of times, made a couple of mistakes, but the last session it was a bit better and we have found a base set-up that I can go into the weekend with. I am looking forward to getting my first race weekend in green started in a few days from now.”

The opening practice sessions for WorldSBK kick off this Friday.

Dovizioso insists ‘room for improvement’ following Qatar outing

Race simulation the most positive aspect for the Italian.

Mission Winnow Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso insists there’s still room for improvement with the Desmosedici GP20 after MotoGP testing wrapped up at Qatar this week.

The Italian ace found himself towards the middle of the field over the three days, going 11-8-10 on the timesheets while endeavouring to understand his 2020 set-up.

Despite acknowledging the desire to achieve more, the 2019 runner-up is still satisfied with the developments made – the number 04 indicating the race simulation was the most positive aspect from the test.

“I am really satisfied with the work done today,” Dovizioso stated. “We were able to try different set-ups that helped us understand that we still have some room left for improvement. The most positive aspect of today was the race simulation.

“With used tyres, I was able to cover the race distance without problems. On top of that, I did a few laps behind Danilo, which helped me to understand how to manage better the tyres.

“My race pace is good, and I am sure that if we can be fast as the front guys, then we will be able to fight for the top positions during the race weekend.”

Potential ‘all there’ declares Bautista as testing concludes

Alvaro Bautista says the potential of the all-new Team HRC Honda CBR1000R-RR is ‘all there’ after the final Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) pre-season test concluded at Phillip Island this week.

Bautista, who dominated Phillip Island’s season-opener last year on Ducati machinery, has been challenged by his transition to the Japanese manufacturer – the Spaniard ultimately finishing both days of testing 16th and 10th on the timesheets.

The race winner is confident in the package, explaining the team and himself need to work towards harnessing what the brand-new Superbike has to offer.

“This test has been very important for us of course and I think we’ve made progress,” Bautista commented. “With respect to yesterday, my feeling with the Fireblade was a little better this morning, while this afternoon was a little trickier in the wind and on a more slippery track.

“We’ve also tested tyres today, finding positives and negatives as is always the case, and we also attempted a long run in order to collect as much data as possible ahead of the first races. All this information is really important as we move forward and I’m confident we can take another step forward this coming weekend.

“The potential, power and speed are all there, now we just need to work to be able to effectively harness it all.”

Bautista’s team-mate, Leon Haslam, was fifth fastest during the pair of days of testing.

Green relieved to make it through Toowoomba unscathed

Green relieved to make it through Toowoomba unscathed

Injured E2 contender salvages pair of podiums in Queensland.

Yamaha Active8 Yamalube Racing’s Josh Green has expressed relief to make it through Toowoomba’s opening rounds of the 2020 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) unscathed, the E2 contender entering the weekend under an injury cloud.

Green suffered a heavy fall in the lead-up to Toowoomba, and while he wouldn’t disclose the injuries he’s dealing with, he admits he was doubtful to make the weekend’s event just two weeks prior.

The New South Welshman scored a pair of third place finishes in the E2 class across both days, while he went 4-4 on Saturday and Sunday respectively in the outright times.

“Two weeks ago it was doubtful I would even be racing, so to not only be competing but also very competitive is a real bonus and I’m satisfied with the result from the weekend,” Green explained. “As each day went on, I could feel my strength draining but on Saturday night, I was able to freshen up and tackle Sunday feeling pretty good.

“The bike was good all weekend, the team worked hard behind the scenes to ensure I had everything I needed and the interest in off-road was as good as I have seen it so it’s awesome to see the promotion and energy in racing at the moment.

“We have a month until rounds three and four so hopefully I can continue to recover and hit them at 100 percent. But, glad to get through the weekend unscathed, land on the podium both days and get off to a good start in the 2020 championship,”

The AORC now heads to Dungog in New South Wales on 14-15 March.

Maiden WorldSSP test positive for wildcard Bayliss

Maiden WorldSSP test positive for wildcard Bayliss

Cube Racing rider sets personal best time at the Island.

Image: Russell Colvin.

Australian wildcard Oli Bayliss has described his maiden WorldSSP test as positive after he set a personal best lap-time at Phillip Island, the youthful talent set to make his world championship debut this weekend at the season-opener.

Bayliss, who will take on double-duties at the Island as he contests both WorldSSP and Australian Supersport, went 16-19 on the timesheets across both days of testing this week, setting a 1m36.010s lap on Tuesday’s final hit-out before the weekend.

“It wasn’t such a bad day to be honest,” Bayliss reflected. “The first session this morning went well for the team and I. We again went faster than what we did yesterday, which was positive, as it was the fastest which I have ever been around the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

“We kept on doing more and more laps to get used to the Cube Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 to get as ready as we can possibly be ahead of the start of the round on Friday. I feel good and I feel like we are improving. The extra track time which I’ll get in the Australian Supersport Championship will definitely help me, in terms of track time that’s for sure.

“To finish 20th overall in the combined times, I’m okay with that. The positives which we can draw out of the two days is the fact that we have gone the fastest around this track than we have done before on a bike which is not quite where we want it to be just yet.

“We as a team can see that the bike needs a bit of improving. I really need to go a second quicker and I should be closer to the top 10. I’ll keep working towards that target.”

The 16-year-old will have 11 sessions to complete – including four races – at the Island this weekend across the two championships.

Phillip Island WorldSBK test ends with Rea on top

Phillip Island WorldSBK test ends with Rea on top

Baz and Sykes complete the top three on day two of testing.

Image: Russell Colvin.

The final pre-season test for the 2020 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) has been completed with five-time reigning champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) setting the pace.

The spectacular Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit brought in wet weather at stages, whilst numerous crashes and red flags occurred, including offs for Rea, Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC).

Leading the way into the weekend, Jonathan Rea moved into top position and put in a strong lap time of 1m30.448s, coming in the morning session. The Ulsterman used today for long runs, showcasing his ability to work well and return to first place.

However, his day wasn’t without incident and was one of a handful of riders who crashed at turn four. He was okay and the bike was virtually undamaged. Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) continued his switch to the KRT squad but was down in 12th, giving him plenty of work ahead of the racing weekend.

Flying the flag for the Independent teams once again was Baz as the Frenchman continued to be quick in the pre-season tests and finished second. What is impressive for Baz is that he hasn’t used the 2020 engine yet, so his pace is done purely on the 2019 engine – he expects a big step forward come Friday and his race pace is already looking strong. Other Independent revelations inside the top 10 included Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Team GOELEVEN) in eighth.

There was a vast improvement in lap time from Scott Redding, despite the more inconsistent weather at the start of the day. The WorldSBK rookie managed to get into the 1m30a bracket as he perfected the balance of his bike. Still learning the Q tyre, Redding is aiming to be on the pace come the start of the weekend.

His teammate Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) struggled to keep pace with his rookie teammate but worked away nonetheless. Redding finished in sixth but with big gains, whilst Davies was 11th on combined times.

2013 WorldSBK champion Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) led the BMW charge as he continued to shine at the sharp end. Having struggled with rear grip in the 2019 races, Sykes can now run comfortably for longer in the 1m31s.

He’s been working on the balance of the bike, whilst also using a new rear shock, placing him third. Teammate Eugene Laverty (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) completed his swingarm and chassis work and is now focused on electronics and short runs. He finished ninth overall.

Having been flying high at the head of the field on day one, Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team’s day two was slightly different. Toprak Razgatlioglu couldn’t replicate his day one pace in the tricky conditions, but was focused on settling in a good race pace and not just setting a strong one-off lap time.

However, his ability to set a strong one-off lap time with the Q tyre itself confirms the strides he has made over the pre-season at a time attack in Tissot Superpole style. Michael van der Mark crashed in the morning session at turn 10 but was okay. The Dutchman didn’t put a fast time in on Monday but set 15 consecutive laps in the 1m31s, demonstrating a good race pace. Toprak was fourth whilst van der Mark was seventh.

‘Pocket Rocket’ Leon Haslam (Team HRC) was once again in the top six, making it all six manufacturers inside the top half dozen once again. His lap time of a 1m30.882a was right on his race pace from last year, so there’s plenty of promise from Honda and their new CBR1000RR-R already.

On the other side of the garage, Alvaro Bautista wasn’t up at the sharp end and suffered a crash at turn four during the morning. He was in the top 10 however, which is an important step forward ahead of the weekend.

Sandro Cortese (OUTDO Kawasaki – TPR) was just outside the top 10 in 13th, 0.005s behind Lowes. Cortese was impressive, considering this was his first testing on the ZX-10RR. Behind Cortese in 14th was returning Spaniard Xavi Fores (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing), whilst Maximilian Scheib (ORELAC Racing VerdNatura) continued to impress in 15th.

He was just ahead of Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Junior Team) and his teammate Federico Caricasulo, whilst Leon Camier (Barni Racing Team) and Takumi Takahashi (MIE Racing Althea Honda Team) were just behind. In all, the top 17 were covered by just 1.5s.

WorldSSP results to come.
