Lowes fends off Rea in close race two WorldSBK encounter

Redding completes WorldSBK debut with trio of podiums in Australia.

Race two of Phillip Island’s Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) opener served up another thriller, as Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team) fended off teammate Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) to secure victory.

The British ace rode strongly throughout the 22-lap outing, ultimately edging out the five-time champion by a slender 0.037s as they crossed the chequered flag.

Runner-up honours for Rea capped off a positive Sunday, the number winning the Superpole race after enduring a disastrous at the Yamaha Financial Services round.

WorldSBK rookie Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing Ducati) locked out the podium, while it was Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha) and Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing Ducati) completed the top five.

Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) was sixth, followed by Maximilian Scheib (Oorelac Racing Verdnatura), Loris Baz (Ten Kate Racing), Sandro Cortese (Ooutdo Kawasaki TPR), and Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK).

Leon Haslam (Team HRC) crashed at the beginning of the race before recovering for 12th, while race one winner Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha) experienced a technical issue and was forced out of the race.

WorldSBK now heads to Qatar on 13-15 March for round two of the series.

Debut Phillip Island victory for Locatelli in WorldSSP affair

Debut Phillip Island victory for Locatelli in WorldSSP affair

First-ever world championship race win for series newcomer.

Image: Russell Colvin.

Rookie Andrea Locatelli took a convincing win by almost six seconds at Phillip Island on debut in round one of the 2020 Supersport World Championship (WorldSSP).

The WorldSSP race featured a mandatory pit stop with stints not allowed to last more than 10 laps of the 16-lap race distance.

Bardahl Evans Bros. Yamaha rider Locatelli started from pole position and he led WorldSSP championship winners Randy Krummenacher (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) and Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) from the front row.

Krummenacher had a poor start and crashed in the opening sequence of corners as his title defence got off to the worst possible start. Mahias briefly led Locatelli into turn one, but the Italian rookie was able to re-pass the French rider into two. Mahias would eventually finish in fifth place.

Once Locatelli had re-taken the lead, he didn’t look back as he pulled out a six second lead over the course of 16 laps and was also the last of the front runners to make the mandatory pit stop as he pitted at the end of lap nine.

Raffaele De Rosa (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) finished behind Locatelli as Italian riders finished 1-2. De Rosa was one of the first riders to pit in the race when the pit window opened, as he dived into the pit-lane on lap seven along with Patryk Sebestyen (OXXO Yamaha Team Toth) and GMT94 Yamaha duo Jules Cluzel and Corentin Perolari.

It was a different strategy to the one race winner Locatelli took as he was the second last to pit – only Jaimie van Sikkelerus (MPM Routz Racing Team) pitting later.

Cluzel finished in third place despite picking up a time penalty for not adhering to the pit stop minimum time during his pit stop, but the 0.080s was not enough to affect his result as he finished five seconds clear of GMT94 teammate Perolari in fourth place.

Hannes Soomer (Kallio Racing) finished in sixth place, with 3.545s added on to his race time for an infringement of pit time not enough to move him down the order. This was partially due to Steven Odendaal (EAB Ten Kate Racing) also receiving a time penalty for the same reason. Soomer’s teammate Isaac Vinales finished in P10.

Australian wildcard Oli Bayliss was a non-starter this afternoon after his Cube Racing team was unable to rectify an issue with the WorldSSP-spec Yamaha that the team had built for Phillip Island.

Rea rebounds with Sunday Superpole Race victory

WorldSBK champion back on top to commence Sunday at Phillip Island.

Defending champion Jonathan Rea has won a nail-biting Tissot Superpole Race at Phillip Island during round one of the 2020 Motul Superbike World Championship, Yamaha Finance round.

After a high-speed crash in race one, the Kawasaki Racing Team top gun responded like a true champion to win a nail-biting thriller.

Rea won ahead of race one victor Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha) and Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing Ducati). Just 0.072s separated the trio after the frenetic 10-lapper, with Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team) right on the tail of the top three.

Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha), pole-setter Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad), Loris Baz (Ten Kate Yamaha) and Leon Haslam (Team HRC Honda) saw out the top eight, plus Michael Rinaldi (Ducati) and Max Schieb (Kawasaki) completed the top 10 in the Superpole race.

Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC Honda) was a big name casualty after crashing at turn six. The victory was the first for Rea at Phillip Island since 2017, while race one winner Razgatlioglu consolidated his early lead in the 2020 championship.

Race three, a 22-lapper, will be held at 3:00pm this afternoon with American Garrett Gerloff (Yamaha) and Eugene Laverty (BMW) again missing after nasty concusssion-causing crashes in warm-up this morning.

Roczen dominates Atlanta main event to level championship lead

Roczen dominates Atlanta main event to level championship lead

Image: Octopi Media.

The points at the top of the 450SX standings have been levelled after Ken Roczen dominated Atlanta’s ninth round of Monster Energy Supercross.

The Team Honda HRC rider grabbed the hole-shot and never looked back as he went onto record a stunning 13.612s over Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Justin Barcia, which now sees him share the points lead with Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki).

There was chaos unfolding behind Roczen, as Tomac went down after an aggressive pass on Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM) in the early stages, while a pile up later in proceedings caught out Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing), Vince Friese (Smarttop Bullfrog MCR Honda) and Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing).

Martin Davalos (Team Tedder KTM) held a podium position until the final lap, where he was ultimately passed by reigning champion Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Tomac to finish in fifth.

Justin Hill claimed sixth (Smarttop Bullfrog MCR Honda) followed by Aaron Plessinger (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing), Malcolm Stewart (Smarttop Bullfrog MCR Honda), Friese, and Wilson. Australian Chad Reed (Mountain Motorsports) was 15th.

Reigning champion Chase Sexton has taken sole possession of the 250SX East points lead after claiming a commanding victory at Atlanta’s third round of the series.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s RJ Hampshire secured the hole-shot and early lead, controlling the field for the opening laps of the main event meanwhile fending off Sexton, who was also in the midst of a battle with Shane McElrath (Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing).

McElrath actually made the pass on the Sexton, however the number one made the pass back before going onto make an aggressive yet fair move on Hampshire for the lead.

Jeremy Martin (Geico Honda) was in the mix during the opening half, however an error by Hampshire left tuff-blocks on the circuit, and the number six was caught out by the debris and crashed heavily as a result. He remounted for 19th.

In the end, Hampshire secured runner-up honours ahead of McElrath, while the top five was rounded out by Jordon Smith (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and rookie Jo Shimoda (Geico Honda).

Enzo Lopes (Yamaha) was sixth followed by Garrett Marchbanks (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki), Nick Gaines (Yamaha), Jalek Swoll (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing), and Josh Hill (Yamaha).

Monster Energy Supercross heads to Daytona, Florida, next weekend.

Maxwell once again led Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team) from the front of the pack, the pair going 1-2 for the third time in as many races this weekend.

The eventual winning margin of Maxwell aboard the V4 R was 0.752s from Halliday, with Josh Waters (JW Racing Suzuki) claiming third. That would also be the overall podium for the opener.

Defending champion Mike Jones (DesmoSport Ducati) finished fourth ahead of Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing), with Bryan Staring (Kawasaki BCperformance), Glenn Allerton (Maxima BMW), Daniel Falzon (JD Racing Yamaha), Arthur Sissis (Suzuki) and Matt Walters (Kawasaki Connection) the top 10.

Toparis edges Bayliss in close Supersport encounter.

Wayne Maxwell has continued his dominance so far at Phillip Island’s opening round of the 2020 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), the Boost Mobile Racing contender riding to victory in race two.

The former multi-time champion was unstoppable in the 12-lap affair, although he was unable to shake Yamaha Racing Team’s Cru Halliday, who kept him honest for the duration of the encounter.

The pair broke away from the field to finish first and second respectively, crossing the line over 10 seconds ahead of third’s Mike Jones (DesmoSport Ducati).

The reigning champion was locked in a multi-rider battle for third, ultimately fending off a hard charging Bryan Staring (Kawasaki BCperformance) and Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing).

Josh Waters (JW Racing) drew the short straw to marginally finish in sixth after a drag race down the straight, while Daniel Falzon (Yamaha) closely followed in seventh. The top 10 was completed by Matt Walters (Kawasaki Connection), Glenn Allerton (Maxima BMW), and Jed Metcher (Suzuki).

Reigning champion Tom Toparis (Yamaha) fended off Oli Bayliss (Cube Racing) in Supersport race two, the number one defeating the WorldSSP wildcard by 0.263s.

Herlings and KTM extend contract through 2023 season

Herlings and KTM extend contract through 2023 season

Additional three-year deal confirmed for MXGP title challenger.

Image: Supplied.

Four-time world champion Jeffrey Herlings has extended his contract with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing through the 2023 MXGP World Championship season.

Hurlings, 25, was previously signed to remain with KTM until the end of this year, now confirming the pair will continue for an additional three years.

“I’m very, very happy,” the Dutchman commented. “I have been with KTM since 2009 so by the end of this next contract it will be 15 years together. I’m excited to stay in the orange family and I have been working with Pit [Beirer] and the entire crew since the beginning and I was 14.

“I’m blessed to be able to do it for another three years – four including this one about to start. It is also good to have this done before the weekend and GP1 of 2020. KTM is where my heart is and they are my family. I’m thankful that they trust in me and I believe in them, the bike and all the people I work with.”

KTM Motorsports director Pit Beirer added: “This contract definitely means a lot to me personally because it was back in 2009 that we gave this young kid and his family our word that we’d take good care of him and he had a great future in front of him – we wanted to be a partner in that.

“We went through so many ups and downs with Jeffrey and he has collected all of his wins and titles with us, just one brand. It was actually quite emotional to know he could spend his career with just one company. I’m really happy that we could agree everything so early for another three years and I wish him a healthy and strong season.”

The association began in 2009 when Herlings was signed to make his MX2 debut for the 2010 season as a 15-year old. He claimed his first top-three race finish in just his second moto at the Grand Prix of Bulgaria, celebrated his first podium at Mantova in Italy for round two and then went 1-1 at Valkenswaard.

Since that initial term in 2010 Herlings has gone on to accumulate 86 grand prix victories in two classes and capture titles in 2012, 2013, 2016 (MX2) and then 2018 (MXGP) with KTM 250 SX-F and KTM 450 SX-F machinery.

Multiple injuries sideline Osborne ahead of Atlanta

Return of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider yet to be determined.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Zach Osborne was injured in training this week, forcing him out of upcoming Monster Energy AMA Supercross rounds.

Osborne suffered a broken rib, two bruised lungs and a sprained wrist, with his return to racing yet to be determined.

“I’m really gutted with the timing of this incident, but very grateful that my injuries were minor considering the hit that I took,” Osborne said.

“It’s been a very tough start to the season for me and my team has been so awesome in picking me back up as they always do. This is just a bump in the road and I will be back as soon as I’m back to 100 percent and can reach my full potential again.”

Osborne had been on the rise during the middle stages of the season, finishing fifth last weekend in Arlington – his third top five result of 2020. He is currently ranked ninth in the standings.

GasGas uncovers brand new factory MXGP program

MC 450F and MC 250F race bikes surface on the eve of 2020 season.

The factory GasGas teams have been unveiled on the eve of the 2020 MXGP World Championship at the British Grand Prix, led by Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing.

Now under Pierer Mobility AG ownership, GasGas MC 450F models will be ridden by Glenn Coldenhoff and Ivo Monticelli in the premier class.

“This is a very proud and important moment for all involved with GasGas Motorcycles – the start of an exciting new chapter and the beginning of the brand’s journey into top-level motocross racing,” stated Robert Jonas, VP motorsports off-road.

“GasGas has a rich heritage in off-road motorcycling, it’s a brand that is about putting the fun back into riding, and together with Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing and Diga Procross GasGas Factory Juniors, we have two established and passionate teams that perfectly fit what GasGas is about.

“Like always, the first GP of every new season is a special moment, but we can say that for GasGas this is also an historic moment. We know that all of our riders have prepared themselves with full commitment and we’re looking forward to seeing how they perform this year.

“Matterley Basin, the British GP, is a milestone for GASGAS Motorcycles, a key moment as we start our push to establish the brand on a global scale.”

Becoming a part of Pierer Mobility AG at the end of 2019, GasGas Motorcycles will benefit from the group’s shared-platform strategy, alongside other brands – KTM and Husqvarna Motorcycles – within the company.

Faced with a minimal amount of time in which to be ready for the MXGP season opener, the specification of both the MC 250F and MC 450F machines used at Matterley Basin and throughout early-season GPs will evolve in-line with the arrival of the 2021 GasGas production models.

GasGas Motorcycles will be represented in the MX2 class by the Diga Procross GasGas Factory Juniors team. Fielding Jeremy Sydow and Simon Langenfelder, they are aiming for top 10 results in their first full season of the world championship.

Razgatlioglu edges Lowes in WorldSBK race one thriller

Redding and van der Mark lock out the top four in a photo finish.

Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha) narrowly edged out Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing Ducati) to secure victory in race one at Phillip Island’s Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) opener, the gap separating them just 0.041s.

The 22-lap encounter got off to a chaotic start when pole-sitter Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK) clashed with five-time defending champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) in the opening laps, sending the number one off-track and to the rear of the field.

Rea later crashed heavily while attempting to work through the pack, while up front a four-way battle ensued between Razgatlioglu, Lowes, Redding and Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha).

It was a photo finish in that order, with Razgatlioglu winning by a mere 0.007s, while Redding was a further 0.034s back. Fourth’s van der Mark crossed the line 0.136s behind the winner, the Dutchman being out-dragged down the final straight after previously battling for victory.
