Styke confident of competitive pace in MX Nationals return

AORC regular to contest MX2 category as he takes on double-duties.

Former national motocross champion and dual AORC E1 title holder Luke Styke is confident he’ll bring a competitive pace in his return to the 2020 MXstore MX Nationals in the MX2 category.

Styke, who transitioned from motocross to off-road racing in 2018, will race the opening rounds of the six-stop, nine-round series, with hopes of completing the championship in its entirety.

The New South Welshman admits his pace in motocross is still there, as the discipline still plays a role in his training, while he believes it will take the first rounds for him to get back up to speed in the MX Nationals environment.

The number 26 will pilot a Yamaha YZ250F prepared by his AORC team, Yamaha Active8 Yamalube Racing, who will also provide him support at the rounds he attends.

“I don’t think my pace has changed since I was racing motocross, and I still ride a fair bit of motocross,” Styke told MotoOnline.com.au. “I ride with guys who are competing up front, and my pace is very similar to there’s – I feel I’m going to be up front week in, week out.

“It’s just going to be adapting quickly to the motocross scene with motos and that kind of thing. My speed will definitely be fine – I feel carrying a pretty high pace in the bush transfers well on the motocross track.

“I think the speed will be fine, but this pre-season, I would’ve liked to have gotten more out of my body, but I picked up a few little niggling injuries coming into the first round of AORC, which put me back a couple of weeks. I think I’ll build through Horsham, and by round three I’ll be swinging.”

Styke dominantly won the MX2 title in 2013 with Serco Yamaha before campaigning in the MX2 World Championship the following season on Yamaha machinery. He returned home in 2015, where he contested the premier class with the former KTM Motocross Racing Team until switching to the off-road scene in 2018.

Crawford describes Dutch GP as the worst conditions he’s raced

Australian salvages 12th overall at Valkenswaard.

Queenslander Nathan Crawford has described last weekend’s MXGP of the Netherlands at Valkenswaard as the worst conditions he’s ever raced in his career.

The MX2 World Championship rookie battled his way through the rain-soaked deep sand, mustering up a 17-11 scorecard for 12th overall.

The Team Honda 114 Motorsports rider is thankful to make it through the weekend unscathed after suffering multiple heavy crashes, the tough circuit claiming a number of riders over the two days.

“It was a tough weekend again,” Crawford admitted. “The weather isn’t playing into our favour at the moment and the track was super-gnarly. These were definitely the worst conditions I’ve ever ridden and it’s obviously a big adjustment for me.

“At least I go away from the weekend healthy and with no injuries. I had a couple of big crashes this weekend so I was pretty happy to walk away from them. Every time I ride my CRF250R I’m learning new things about bike setup and I definitely know where I belong in the race results so I’ll keep working and try again.”

The next MXGP round is scheduled for 19 April in Spain after the Argentinian stop was postponed.

Eric Granado (Avintia Esponsorama Racing) topped the timesheets on day one at the official FIM Enel MotoE World Cup test in Jerez, the Brazilian edging out 2019 Cup winner Matteo Ferrari (Trentino Gresini MotoE) by 0.084 seconds as the season began just as close as it left off.

WithU Motorsport’s Bradley Smith completed the top three, with the veteran fast men most definitely making their presence felt on Tuesday.

Back on board their Energica Ego Corsas for the first time since the 2019 finale in Valencia, the riders had a few new things to try ahead of the 2020 campaign. They included a new Ohlins front fork introduced to try and improve cornering, and Michelin have also provided new front and rear tyres for 2020.

The Energica Ego Corsas now also have new airflow cooling for the batteries, which in turn helps them to be charged quicker.

After the three sessions on Tuesday, Mike Di Meglio (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) and the returning Niki Tuuli (Avant Ajo MotoE) – the Finn not 100 percent fit after a recent operation to remove screws from the leg he broke in 2019 – were the men next on the timesheets as they completed the top five.

Then came Alex De Angelis (Octo Pramac MotoE), Xavier Simeon (LCR E-Team), Australian Josh Hook (Octo Pramac MotoE) and Niccolo Canepa (LCR E-Team) from sixth to ninth, respectively, with the top 10 on day one completed by the fastest rookie – Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP).

Dutch GP ‘one of the most difficult Valkenswaard wins’ declares Herlings

Red Bull KTM rider earns victory on countback in the Netherlands.

Jeffrey Herlings says the weekend’s Dutch MXGP was one of the most difficult wins of his career at the Valkenswaard venue after being challenged by reigning world champion Tim Gajser (Team HRC) all weekend.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing contender, who’s been notoriously dominant in the sand especially in his home country, mustered up a 2-1 scorecard to be credited the overall on countback, benefiting from an error by Gajser in the final outing to stand atop the podium.

“This was one of the most difficult Valkenswaard wins,” Herlings declared. “Tim did a great job but it was important for us to think about the overall than the 1-1 and to not lose points.

“This was a good GP for us. Going to Argentina I hope we can find some good weather – it has been two in a row now with rain! We’ll try to make the best of the situation there and go again for a podium spot.”

Herlings holds a nine-point advantage over Gajser as the MXGP World Championship heads to Argentina on 22 March.

Career-best WMX moto finish for O’Hare in the Netherlands

KTM-mounted Australian 11th overall at the second round.

Western Australian TJ O’Hare stormed to a top 10 moto result at Valkenswaard’s second round of the 2020 Women’s Motocross World Championship last weekend, marking a career-best performance so far on the world stage.

Following a 12th overall placing at Matterley Basin’s season-opener a week ago, the KTM Diga Junior Racing rider strengthened her championship ranking by racing to a 15-8 scorecard for 11th overall at the Dutch venue.

The result moves O’Hare to 10th in the series standings, which is currently led by reigning champion and New Zealander Courtney Duncan (Kawasaki).

“I was a bit too stressed on Saturday I think,” O’Hare stated. “Halfway through the race I calmed myself down because I made some many mistakes but things improved from there. After they flattened the track it was much easier to keep the speed today.

“I’m pumped about that eighth place in the second race moto, my best world championship result ever. For the moment I’m quite pleased with my speed I just need to build more consistency into my riding to eliminate the mistakes. If I can achieve that, even the top six would be within reach.”

Compatriot Hannah Bagnall (Honda) contested her second-ever round in the WMX class at the weekend, winding 38th overall.

Rea’s Phillip Island helmet raises over $29,000 for bushfire relief

Rea’s Phillip Island helmet raises over $29,000 for bushfire relief

One-off Phillip Island WorldSBK helmet goes to Irish bidder.

Image: Supplied.

Five-time WorldSBK champion Jonathan Rea has raised over $29,000 AUD for bushfire relief in Australia after auctioning a one-off helmet that he wore at Phillip Island’s opener.

Rea has joined a list of motorsport stars to raise money for the country after wildfires ravaged the east coast of Australia this summer, with the amount raised going towards BlazeAid – a charity of volunteers working with farmers in bushfire affected areas.

Designed by legendary Italian designer Aldo Drudi at the request of Rea and his Australian wife Tatia, who grew up on the Island, the helmet is a colourful art piece with lyrical renditions of koalas, kangaroos and flowers and symbols from the Australian bush.

“It was so difficult being at home in Northern Ireland and watching the fires from afar,” said Rea. “We have a beautiful mountain property in Wandiligong that came under threat with the fire burning in Abbeyard near Bright in the Alpine region in North East Victoria.

“My wife Tatia’s parents were staying there when police told them they should vacate. We felt helpless and scared, so I decided that I would race in Australia with a special helmet design and sell it after to donate the money to a worthwhile cause.

“The WorldSBK organisation got involved with BlazeAid and with this platform, we can auction the helmet. When I spoke to Aldo, who has designed my helmets for the last few years, and we came up with this cool concept.”
