Organisers of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship are monitoring the situation surrounding the coronavirus outbreak ahead of its season-opener scheduled for 17 May at Hangtown.

Strict regulations and restrictions on major events imposed by state governments as already seen the remainder of Monster Energy Supercross postponed, with the outdoor series currently in evaluating it’s first move.

It’s understood the championship is conducting discussions with series partners to determine what actions might be required for currently scheduled series events.

A number of MXGP World Championship events in Europe and across the globe have been rescheduled to the end of the year, while it’s still unclear on the situation with postponed Supercross rounds.

MA moves to postpone Wakefield Park ASBK

Further restrictions force organisers to reschedule to second round.

Motorcycling Australia (MA) has moved to postpone round two of the 2020 Mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) at Wakefield Park despite attempts to run the event as TV-only.

It’s understood further restrictions recommended by the Australian government and imposed by the New South Wales government due to coronavirus have now made it impossible for the race to continue.

“The developments of COVID-19 have changed each day over the last week and in some cases, they have changed hour by hour,” said Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle.

“The situation of last weekend is now very different as is the situation as of Monday. This is a tough call for the ASBK management team to make, but given the significances of the global health crisis this is the right decision to be made. We choose to make this decision now rather than the day before the race.”

MA confirmed earlier this week that all national event sare under review through to June. Today it was revealed the Supercars round in Perth, which was set to host ASBK, has been postponed – MA is yet to address the fourth round of the series.

Ongoing coronavirus prompts cancellation of Finke Desert Race

Postponement not considered by event organisers.

The ongoing coronavirus outbreak and restrictions on large events has prompted organisers of the Tatts Finke Desert Race to cancel the 2020 edition.

It’s understood the Finke Desert Race Club committee held an emergency meeting this week regarding the impact of COVID-19 on this year’s event, where it was ultimately decided to abandon the June race meeting.

Last week the government imposed a ban on events of over 500 people in a bid to slow down the coronavirus, while a number of states have declared a State of Emergency.

The prestigious desert race, which has run every year for the past 44 years, was not considered to be postponed at a later date this year. Over 7000 local and interstate visitors travel to Alice Springs for the Finke Desert Race.

Green climbs to second in E2 standings at round three

Yamaha pilot winds up in P3 at the third round.

A third place result at round three of the 2020 Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) in Dungog has promoted Josh Green to second in the E2 standings.

The Yamaha Active8 Yamalube Racing contender pushed through the challenging conditions to finish behind Michael Driscoll (bLU cRU Off-Road Racing) and Daniel Milner (KTM Enduro Racing Team).

With Sunday’s fourth round cancelled due to poor weather conditions, the New South Welshman was able to make up a position in the highly-competitive category.

“It was a bit of an up and down weekend for me with some good test times but also a couple of ordinary ones that hurt me at the end of the day,” Green explained. “I think there were a few top three times in tests but there was also some way down in the top 10 when I fell off.

“No rider can afford to be inconsistent in a championship as competitive as this. Still, despite the mistakes, it’s still good to be on the podium and leave here healthy. I’m second in the championship but only two points separates three riders and we still have a lot of racing to go.”

The next stop of AORC, currently under review by Motorcycling Australia amid the coronavirus, is scheduled for 18-19 April at Nowra in New South Wales.

Dungog’s third round of the 2020 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) saw Mason Semmens take on the Enduro format for the first, which was admittedly a learning experience for the E1 rookie.

The KTM Enduro Racing Team rider seemingly adapted to the format, emerging with runner-up honours in his class to finish a fraction behind newly-appointed series leader Luke Styke (Yamaha Active8 Yamalube Racing).

“The enduro format was new to me, so I learned a lot on the trail and with the tests in between, which was good,” said Semmens. My day wasn’t too bad, finishing second in class, even though we always want to win.

“I look forward to doing some more enduro and really picking it up further, plus Dungog was a good location to gain further experience. It would have been nice to race on the Sunday, but it is what it is and we’ll move onto the next one now.”

Sunday’s fourth round of AORC was cancelled after poor weather conditions continued to hit the New South Wales venue. The next stop of AORC is scheduled for 18-19 April in Nowra, New South Wales.

Husqvarna debut a ‘good weekend’ for Wilksch in Dungog

E2 contender secures seventh in return from injury.

Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team newcomer Andy Wilksch has described his first appearance with the squad as a ‘good weekend’ at Dungog’s third round of the Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC), the E2 contender recently recovering from multiple injuries.

Wilksch, who missed Toowoomba’s opener after suffering back and pelvis injuries in the pre-season, charged to a respective seventh during Saturday’s third round in E2, winding up 12th in the outright times.

The number 32 is pleased with his performance considering the lack of bike time this year, and admits his fitness surprised him after the challenging day’s racing.

“My only goal when I got injured was to be back for Dungog, which I’m really happy about and it was good to be there with the Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team getting that experience together,” Wilksch explained.

“To finish and get the result that we did was a bonus, really. I felt as though my body held up okay, surprisingly well actually, and my times were inside the top 10 outright in a fair few of the tests. It was definitely a good weekend considering the lack of bike time that I’ve had so far this year.”

Sunday’s fourth round of AORC was cancelled due to poor weather conditions. The next stop of the series is pencilled in for 18-19 April in Nowra, New South Wales, however it’s currently under review by Motorcycling Australia amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Husqvarna transition all but confirmed for Duffy

Husqvarna transition all but confirmed for Duffy

Reigning MXD champion already racing Husqvarna machinery in Western Australia.

It appears Regan Duffy’s move to Husqvarna is all but confirmed, with the reigning MXD champion set to step up to the MX2 category in this year’s MXstore MX Nationals.

The 17-year-old, who represented Australia at the Motocross of Nations last year, has recently been publicly racing Husqvarna machinery in the same colours as Todd Waters in his home state of Western Australia.

It further shapes the self-operated squad that’s set to be officially announced by MX1 champion Waters, who’s already showcased elements of the team after contesting the first two stops of the Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship.

Waters hasn’t disclosed the exact details of the operation, although strong BerrySweet branding – a long-time sponsor of both Waters and Duffy – on the bikes of both riders suggests the WA-based company will serve as a major backer of the duo.

It’s still unclear if Newry will host round one of the MX Nationals in May after Horsham’s season-opener was postponed last week due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, with all national races up until June under review by Motorcycling Australia.

Gibbs earns second New Zealand national title in Taupo

Purvis clinches MX2 championship at season-finale.

Kirk Gibbs has claimed a second-career MX1 title in the New Zealand Motocross Championship after finishing runner-up at the final round in Taupo over the weekend.

The JCR Altherm Yamaha rider defeated defending champion and round winner Cody Cooper (Honda Racing) by a slender four points in the title chase, the Australian securing 50 percent of race wins from 12 starts.

“It’s so awesome to win the championship again,” said Gibbs, who also claimed the title in 2018. “To come so close last year and just miss out was disappointing. Everything just went really well for me this season and things started clicking for me.

“I was riding well and the Yamaha YZ450 was great. Working hard with Josh during the weeks between the four rounds and with my Australian team helped me to feel really comfortable and strong, which was what I believe led to the championship win.”

The MX2 title was taken out by fellow JCR Altherm Yamaha rider Max Purvis, while Australian Caleb Ward (CML KTM) was fifth in the standings.

Wakefield Park ASBK round set to run without spectators

Wakefield Park ASBK round set to run without spectators

Status of the second round subject to change due to coronavirus outbreak.

Image: Russell Colvin.

Wakefield Park’s second round of the 2020 Mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) is set go ahead as a TV-only event, Motorcycling Australia (MA) has revealed.

Organisers are looking to put measures in place to keep within the 500 person limit that the government has placed on mass gatherings and events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While subject to change in the lead up to the 27-29 March event, it’s understood the ASBK is cooperating with the venue to reduce expenses, while its TV package and partnerships still make it viable according to MA CEO Peter Doyle.

“ASBK at Wakefield Park, as of right now as we’re speaking, is running, but it will be a TV race only,” Doyle stated to CycleOnline.com.au. “There will be no spectators and the number of people within teams let into the track might be restricted.

“As far as a race goes, Wakefield Park wants it to run – as long we can stay under the 500 [person] mass gathering, then it will run. With an ASBK event, we’re cooperating with the track and have been able to save a lot of expenses – it also has good sponsors and partners, so it’s worthwhile going and running a TV event.”

Further rounds of the ASBK series could be either postponed or cancelled altogether in the coming months, with The Bend – to be hosted alongside the Asia Road Racing Championship and Asia Talent Cup – and Wanneroo rounds each currently ‘under review’.
