Additional adjustments have been applied to the 2020 Motul Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) calendar as COVID-19 continues to postpone competition.

Dorna WSBK Organization has confirmed the Italian Round scheduled for 8-10 May at Imola has been cancelled altogether.

However, it’s planned that the Aragon Round originally due for 22-24 May will now take place on 28-30 August, with the round at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli moved from 12-14 June to 6-8 November.

The soonest round scheduled on the calendar is now Donington Park in the United Kingdom on 3-5 July, which could potentially be pushed back further as a result of the pandemic.

Start of MX Nationals season delayed further until August

Series organiser confirms latest status of motocross series.

Image: Foremost Media.

The 2020 MXstore MX Nationals has been delayed further, with series organiser Williams Event Management (WEM) confirming the championship is now due to commence in August.

WEM is intending to complete the scheduled nine-round series from August into October across six weekends as it navigates the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was announced last month that the MX Nationals would be commencing at the end of June with the Conondale round, however, that plan has now been shelved upon the latest advice from the Australian government.

An updated revised calendar is anticipated to be released toward the end of May, with WEM adamant that the MX Nationals championship will go ahead this year.

“We have been watching both the NRL and AFL regarding the comments they have been making around resuming their codes,” explained WEM director Kevin Williams in a statement released to the industry this afternoon.

“After listening to PM Scott Morrison this morning and trying to look at a realistic model, we are planning on a return to racing in August and running through into October. It is still our full intention in planning to run all nine rounds across the six weekends.

“We plan to release the actual calendar in late May, subject to social distancing announcements from the state and federal government. Racing in 2020 will definitely need some adjustment from all of us, but together we will be racing and the gates will drop.”

The postponed of the MX Nationals will require the Australian Supercross Championship to be pushed back, with most recent provisional plans released in February stating that the series would open on 3 October.

Tight second Virtual MotoGP Race belongs to Bagnaia

Tight second Virtual MotoGP Race belongs to Bagnaia

Pramac Racing rider holds off Vinales in Red Bull Ring thriller.

The second Virtual MotoGP Race was won by Pramac Racing’s Francesco Bagnaia at the Red Bull Ring after he edged Maverick Vinales (Monster Energy Yamaha) to victory.

Bagnaia and Vinales went toe-to-toe, with the Italian taking a debut MotoGP ‘win’ after diving up the inside of Vinales on the grass on the last lap.

The second ‘Stay At Home GP’ was filled with yet more thrills and spills as 10 premier class riders again put on a show to bring a little light relief and entertainment to a tougher time for many MotoGP fans around the world – with more than 20 households connected up behind the scenes to make it a reality.

Behind Bagnaia and Vinales, round one winner Alex Marquez (Repsol Honda) got the better of reigning world champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) for the final podium position, as three crashes cost Petronas Yamaha SRT’s Fabio Quartararo on his way to fifth.

Sixth place was another tight fight and went right down to the wire as Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Danilo Petrucci (Ducati Team), both making their virtual race debuts, battled it out. In the end, Petrucci came out on top despite The Doctor’s best efforts after the number 46 put in an almighty lunge at the final corner.

LCR Honda Idemitsu’s Takaaki Nakagami slipped back to eighth after a few more exploits, making no friends on the virtual track in this race, but providing some top entertainment, with Ducati Team’s Michele Pirro and Reale Avintia Racing’s Tito Rabat completing the top 10.

Cancellation of season ‘a last resort’ for Dorna Sports

Cancellation of season ‘a last resort’ for Dorna Sports

Holding MotoGP and WorldSBK seasons the highest priority when coronavirus settles.

Image: Supplied.

Dorna Sports has reaffirmed that it intends to complete as many rounds possible in the MotoGP and Superbike world championships once safe to do so.

It’s been reported this week that Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta doubted the season would go ahead without a coronavirus vaccine.

However, the evolving situation has prompted the organiser of MotoGP and WorldSBK to clarify its stance. It has reiterated that racing is the priority and any cancellation of championships would be ‘a last resort’.

“In light of the continued uncertainty, Dorna Sports would like to reaffirm that racing is our top priority in 2020,” the statement partly read. “The aim of every party involved is to begin racing again as soon as it is safe to do so.

“Our number one focus has always been and will remain on trying to run the 2020 season with as many grands prix as possible, finishing within the 2020 calendar year. However, we will always act in line with health and safety advice from governments and relevant health authorities.

“If the pandemic continues to put our lives and sport on hold for longer than any of us are able to anticipate and travel restrictions remain in place, only as a last resort would Dorna Sports ever consider discussing cancellation of the 2020 season with the FIM, IRTA and the MSMA.

“Our number one focus for WorldSBK is likewise trying to run the 2020 season with as many rounds as possible once it is safe to do so. The priority of all parties involved is to race, safely, and bring our fans more of what they love – motorcycle racing.”

The lone round of WorldSBK was completed at Phillip Island at the beginning of March, while the outbreak forced MotoGP to be cancelled in Qatar, leaving the Moto2 and Moto3 categories to open the season. There have been multiple postponements across both series since.

Yamaha’s Hoogenboezem crowned NZSBK champion

Yamaha’s Hoogenboezem crowned NZSBK champion

Shorted championship awarded to YRT rider following cancellations.

Yamaha Racing Team’s Alastair Hoogenboezem has been awarded the shorted 2020 New Zealand Superbike Championship (NZSBK) after the final two rounds were cancelled.

Motorcycling New Zealand called the championship complete following three of a scheduled five rounds, handing the title to Hoogenboezem.

“I’ve never had a win or title like this before,” he commented. “Normally I’d be up on the top step of the podium with the crowd cheering – it feels a bit weird. I’m excited, but can’t celebrate it with anyone yet. I’m lucky that I was in the best seat in the house after Hampton Downs.

“Massive thanks to the team. Last year I didn’t think it could get too much better in terms of a ride in New Zealand, but with Josh and Amy [Coppins] coming on board in 2020, it really ramped it up. This year, we had the team and the bike and the support and could just concentrate on the riding.”

It was Hoogenboezem’s third national title, earned in equally-spaced time frames. He won the 125cc class in 2010, then five years later in 2015 claimed the Supersport 600 trophy. Now, he’s added the top-level 2020 Superbike silverware to his cabinet.

Cancelled Erzbergrodeo not to be rescheduled in 2020

Cancelled Erzbergrodeo not to be rescheduled in 2020

Round three of WESS Enduro World Championship shelved altogether.

Image: Supplied.

The iconic Red Bull Erzbergrodeo has been cancelled for 2020 as a result of the global coronavirus pandemic that has brought to sport to a standstill.

Doubling as round three of the WESS Enduro World Championship, the Austrian event scheduled for 11-14 June won’t be staged at a later date.

Regarded as one of the world’s premier off-road motorcycle competitions, the Erzbergrodeo annually attracts 1800 riders from 40 nations to the Iron Giant.

The cancellation follows a recent decision made by the Austrian government. While they intend to ease certain restrictions regarding their COVID-19 lockdown measures, no mass gathering events will be permitted until July at the earliest.

This information follows the postponement of Extreme XL Lagares to 2-4 October and the recent cancellation of Trefle Lozerien AMV that was due to take place between 21-23 May.

Yamaha and Serco reach 20th anniversary milestone

Yamaha and Serco reach 20th anniversary milestone

Championship-winning collaboration celebrating two decades together.

Yamaha Motor Australia and Serco Motorsport are celebrating their 20th season of competing together in 2020.

The partnership became official in 2001, with the Queensland-based Serco organisation becoming the factory ‘Lites’ team in 2004.

“YMA and Serco have been in racing for the long haul and the commitment we have to each other and racing has been strong,” explained Serco owner Gavin Eales.

“We see a lot of teams come and go, but look at Yamaha’s consistency in racing, each team has been around for some time and built up a good knowledge and infrastructure base that can’t be replicated in just one or two seasons.”

Serco Yamaha’s first MX Nationals MX2 title was won by Cameron Taylor in 2005, with Jake Moss (2007), Luke Styke (2013), Luke Clout (2014) and Wilson Todd (2018) also capturing the 250 class crown. In addition, Brenden Harrison claimed the MXD title in 2013.

In the Australian Supercross Championship, the first title came when Styke completed the double in 2013, before Jackson Richardson went back-to-back during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
