Rounds seven and eight of the 2020 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) in Victoria have been cancelled by Motorcycling Australia (MA), reducing the series to just four events if it is to restart in October.

Following the recent cancellation of Nowra, the AORC was due to resume on 19-20 September at Omeo, but a second wave of coronavirus and subsequent border closures have made it impossible to go ahead as planned.

“Due to the recent announcement of lockdown in Victoria and the spike in cases in Victoria and NSW, as well as the state border restrictions, unfortunately this has made the event impossible to go ahead,” a statement confirmed. “AORC will continue to monitor state government COVID-19 restrictions and their potential impacts this may have on the current remaining 2020 championship dates.”

The next event scheduled on the AORC calendar is Wynyard in Tasmania, currently scheduled to be held between 17-18 October. Rounds 11 and 12 of the series remain at a location to be confirmed, pencilled in for 14-15 November as the series’ back-up date.

Second surgery for Marquez to replace damaged plate

Second surgery for Marquez to replace damaged plate

Repsol Honda rider operated on again following further complications.

MotoGP champion Marc Marquez has had to undergo a second surgery to replace the titanium plate in his broken right arm, which was damaged due to ‘stress accumulation’ and puts him in doubt for Brno this weekend.

After being injured at the opening round, the Repsol Honda rider attempted to ride at Jerez 2, but was forced to withdraw following qualifying on the Saturday afternoon.

“Marc Marquez underwent surgery 13 days ago and today he returned to the operating room,” Dr Xavier Mir commented. “The first operation was successful, what was not expected was that the plate was insufficient. An accumulation of stress in the operated area has caused the plate to suffer some damage, so today the titanium plate has been removed and replaced by a new fixation.

“The rider has not felt pain during this period. He has always followed the medical advice given and the feeling from his body. Unfortunately, an over stress has caused this issue. Now we have to wait 48 hours to understand the recovery time.”

Marquez underwent a second operation on Monday as Dr Mir and his team at the Hospital Universitari Dexeus successfully replaced the titanium plate inserted. The Spaniard will now stay in hospital for 48 hours before being discharged.

Asia Talent Cup unable to be completed this season

Asia Talent Cup unable to be completed this season

Event cancelations and travel restrictions cause early end to series.

Image: Supplied.

This year’s Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup (ATC) has been cancelled due to COVID-19, with border restrictions causing a number of associated events to be dropped by organisers.

With the MotoGP rounds in Thailand and Malaysia both cancelled recently, plus travel restrictions making additional rounds unable to go ahead, only the Qatar round has been contested in 2020.

Every rider who was set to compete in the cup this season will automatically have an available spot on the 2021 grid. Any remaining places in the 2021 cup will be filled by riders from national championships or racing schools across Asia and Oceania, with competitors chosen by the ATC selection committee.

This is due to the fact that the 2021 selection event, set to be held before the Malaysian GP in October at Sepang, cannot take place this season. A 2021 calendar will be announced following publication of 2021 dates or calendars for the championships alongside which the ATC often race, such as MotoGP, Malaysian Superbikes (MSBK) and Australian Superbike (ASBK).

In 2020, the focus for the riders will now move from on-track battles to virtual workshops aimed at improving some important skills off the bike. These will focus on communication and social media, as well the importance of the English language for those who are not native speakers. The first two workshops took place mid-July, with more organised for the coming weeks as the grid gear up for 2021.

Search begins for 2021 Oceania Junior Cup competitors

Australia’s ‘Road to MotoGP’ now open to expressions of interest.

Motorcycling Australia (MA) is seeking expressions of interest for riders aged 11 to under 16 to be considered for the 2021 Oceania Junior Cup (OJC) series.

The OJC Junior development program made its debut in 2019 and is Australia’s premier junior road racing academy, officially recognised by the FIM and Dorna Sports as part of the ‘Road to MotoGP’ program.

Riders are provided with a race-prepped Yamaha YZF-R15 bikes, equipped with Pirelli tyres, Ohlins suspension, RK chains, Motul oil, Ricondi Motorcycle Apparel leathers and gloves, AGV helmets, TCX boots, round entries, transportation of bikes, pre-event service of bikes, technical support, spare parts budget and OJC team uniform.

Riders competing in the 2021 championship will receive elite coaching to help develop their bike skills and technique, health and fitness, sportsmanship and off-track activities such as media and fan engagement.

The OJC, which is featuring as part of the 2020 Mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) was also part of the Australian round of the Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) and was scheduled to be a feature race at this year’s MotoGP at Phillip Island prior to its cancellation.

“Motorcycling Australia are committed to developing Australia’s junior talent on the Road to MotoGP, aimed at developing Australia’s next national talent and international champion,” said MA operations director Martin Port. “Our current riders come from a multitude of disciplines including road, speedway, motocross, enduro and dirt track.

“Every bike is identical – there are no haves and have nots in the OJC program. The racing is spectacular and victory comes down to a rider’s ability to get the most out of himself or herself, but winning isn’t everything in the OJC program. Our focus is the development of these juniors, both on and off the track. It’s about learning, developing as a rider and opening up opportunities.”

Dorna’s commitment has already seen OJC riders qualify for the 2020 Asia Talent Cup selection event and cements MA’s objective to develop clear pathways for junior road racers in the Oceania region. Additionally, selected riders from the OJC were provided the opportunity of participating in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup selection event last year.

Final remaining MotoGP flyaway rounds cancelled

Additional round in Europe to be confirmed as season finale.

Image: Supplied.

This year’s MotoGP World Championship will remain in Europe for the entire season after confirmation arrived that the flyaway rounds in Argentina, Thailand and Malaysia have now been cancelled.

Previously postponed, the ongoing coronavirus outbreak and resulting complications have resulted in the cancellation of the events to be confirmed.

However, it has instead been revealed that an additional grand prix is to be added to the 2020 calendar in Europe, becoming the season finale. The venue – rumoured to be Portimao – will be announced on 10 August.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the cancellation of the Argentina, Thailand and Malaysian grands prix this season and they will be very much missed on the 2020 calendar,” stated Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta.

“The passion of the fans who often travel across continents to enjoy MotoGP with us in Termas de Rio Hondo, Buriram and Sepang is incredible, creating as they do such an incredible atmosphere and welcome for the sport.

“However, we are delighted to add another Grand Prix in Europe to the 2020 calendar and reveal our new agreement that will see MotoGP racing in Thailand and Buriram until at least 2026.”

It was previously announced in May that Phillip Island’s Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix wouldn’t be going ahead this year, nor would the Japanese GP at Motegi or Grand Prix of the Americas flyaways.

The MotoGP championship commenced this month with consecutive race weekends at Jerez, now set to travel to Brno in the Czech Republic for round three between 7-9 August.

It was also recently announced that the British, Dutch and Qatar rounds of the Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) have been cancelled, also due to complications from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hub-style Australian motocross schedule being proposed

Hub-style Australian motocross schedule being proposed

Five rounds over a two-week period the target of selected teams.

Image: Foremost Media.

Options are being assessed that could see a season-saving hub created to conduct the 2020 Australian Motocross Championship over a two-week period as select series stakeholders work to overcome complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A questionnaire has been distributed this month to monitor interest from a broad range of national competitors on the bold effort that remains in its infancy, understood to have been met with relative positivity from a majority of privateers who have submitted the survey.

The second wave of coronavirus currently affecting Victoria and New South Wales in particular has made for tighter government restrictions and state border closures, impacting plans for Motorcycling Australia (MA) to get a new-look series off the ground as soon as initially intended following the recent departure of former promoter Williams Event Management (WEM).

However, leading teams reliant upon going racing at the national level are now considering as many as five rounds across three weekends between 27 September to 11 October, including multiple mid-week races. It’s been proposed to race on three Sundays and two Wednesdays in succession under flexible circumstances during the unprecedented times.

Such a move would likely require a quarantine period on arrival into the hosting state, potentially as well as those returning to their home states, and the hub would need to meet specific protocols in order to be completed successfully. There are already a number of mainstream sports operating under strict operational guidelines, including certain travel exemptions.

The economic environment and logistical challenges will prove a determining factor in the bid being well-received by the wider racing community, as will employment commitments because of the extended stay required. Those pitching the idea suggest the aim would be for it to be at least as cost effective as the traditional calendar that’s previously spanned multiple states.

Queensland had been a favoured location prior to increased measures put in place by the state government to reduce the chances of a widespread COVID-19 outbreak, with New South Wales now becoming the primary topic of conversation. There could be as many as three venues included on a compromised schedule to get the series done.

With a rapid structure poised to take place behind closed doors, a free-to-air and pay television package has been proposed to take the sport to the fans and additionally provide vital sponsorship exposure for competitors. Entry fees could be raised to $400 (from $295 in MX1 and $285 in MX2) per round to off-set production costs if TV is in fact introduced.

While the hub-style arrangement is primarily being facilitated by Penrite Honda Racing’s Yarrive Konsky in collecting data before presenting it to MA, the national governing body is currently moving forward in planning a more conventional multi-state calendar in the final quarter, which would also be subject to further changes.

WEM revealed late last month that it would be exiting the MX Nationals a season sooner than originally announced, resulting in MA electing to manage the series internally for 2020. Most recent communications indicated that a east coast-based series was still in the works, those details expected to be released as soon as next week unless the outside proposal of a hub gains momentum beforehand.

A back-up date previously announced has been brought into play by organisers, with the venue and state to be confirmed on the weekend of 14-15 November as the championship finals. Next on the AORC revised calendar is now round seven and eight at Omeo, Victoria, between 19-20 September.

Decision to cancel hybrid Motocross of Nations confirmed

MXGP season to instead include Mantova on revised 2020 schedule.

This year’s Monster Energy Motocross of Nations (MXoN) has now been cancelled altogether by Infront Moto Racing and the FIM after plans to host a hybrid event within an MXGP weekend didn’t eventuate.

Initially scheduled for France and then more recently moved to Great Britain as part of an MXGP round, the historic event won’t go ahead at all in 2020.

“Infront Moto Racing and the FIM regret to inform that the 2020 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations scheduled to take place on 25-27 September in Matterley Basin, Great Britain, has been cancelled,” a statement confirmed.

“Despite all the efforts by the local organiser [Steve Dixon] and Infront Moto Racing, there is no other viable option but to cancel the 2020 edition of MXoN due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

“Additionally, information from nearly all of the non-European teams who normally attend this event is that due to COVID-19, travel restrictions and quarantine protocols, they will not be able to take part in this year’s event.

“Taking all these factors into consideration and given the prestigious profile of the event, Infront Moto Racing and the FIM have decided to cancel the event and look forward to an exceptional Monster Energy FIM MXoN in 2021!

“Consequently, the MXGP of Winchester in Matterley Basin (Great Britain) to be held on the same weekend has also been cancelled. This event will now be replaced by the Grand Prix of the Citta di Mantova in Mantova to be held on 30 September.

“Infront Moto Racing and the FIM would like to thank the National Federations, organisers, the manufacturers, partners, riders, teams and fans for their cooperation, patience, understanding and support.”
