Portimao confirmed to be hosting MotoGP final round

Grand prix racing returns to Portugal for the first time since 2012.

The final round of the 2020 MotoGP World Championship will head to the undulating Portimao circuit in Portugal this 20-22 November, set to make its debut on the grand prix calendar.

Featured as a reserve track since 2017, the unique ‘Autodromo Internacional do Algarve’ will welcome Portugal back on the schedule for the first time in since 2012.

“I am very proud that MotoGP will return to my country eight years after the last grand prix, which took place at the Circuito do Estoril,” stated FIM President Jorge Viegas. “I would like to warmly thank Dorna, the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve and the Motorcycling Federation of Portugal for having managed to meet the necessary conditions for the organisation of the finale of the championship to take place in Portugal.”

Autodromo Internacional do Algarve CEO Paulo Pinheiro added: “It is a great achievement for our team to finally have MotoGP at our racetrack! MotoGP is the pinnacle of two-wheeled motorsport and we are so excited to have it.

“It has been a long process with Dorna, we had an agreement in place since 2017, and finally all the hard work paid off. On top of this to have Miguel Oliveira on the MotoGP grid, being able to fight for the podium will be an amazing add on for this race, and hopefully the championship will be decided here.

“We are working to have the fans in our race, and we will start with a capacity of 30.000 fans for the race weekend and then we will decide with Dorna and the sanitary authorities the following stages. We can’t express how happy we are to have this race.”

Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta said that the Portimao circuit is due to be resurfaced following last weekend’s round of the Superbike World Championship, which will add to the intrigue ahead of the 2020 title-decider in Portugal toward the end of this year.

“It’s big news for us,” Ezpeleta said. “We signed an agreement in 2017 with Portimao to be the reserve circuit for any kinds of cancellations and we’ve been in contact with them all this time. We’ve been to Portimao with Superbike and we think it’s an amazing possibility for us.

“Also in the agreement is that the track will be resurfaced after the Superbike round. When we explained this to the riders they were excited, because they’ve seen the track on TV, but we’ve never been there.

“Portugal has a long history in our sport and there have been some historic battles in Estoril. It’s something very good for us to have the possibility to go back to Portugal, especially with Miguel Oliveira participating as it’s great to have a Portuguese rider able to compete in his own country. We are extremely happy to be racing in Portimao at the end of the year.”

Roczen replaced by Craig for entire Pro Motocross series

Ongoing health issues cause Team Honda HRC rider to skip outdoors.

Team Honda HRC’s Ken Roczen will sit out the 2020 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, to be replaced by Christian Craig alongside Chase Sexton for the entire season from Loretta Lynn’s opener this Saturday.

Roczen – soon to become a father – battled a series of health issues through the Salt Lake City rounds of Monster Energy Supercross, now instead focusing on regaining full fitness in the lead-up to the 2021 season.

“Taking this shortened outdoor season off was a very difficult decision, but I’m confident it’s what’s best for me and my team in the long run,” Roczen explained. “It will be good to regroup, let my body heal, enjoy this important experience with Courtney and build back up for 2021. I’d like to thank my team and sponsors for having my back through this and I look forward to supporting Chase and Christian from home this summer before once again doing my job the best I possibly can.”

American Honda manager of advertising and motorcycle sports Brandon Wilson said: “Of course we’re disappointed that we won’t have Ken in the pits and on the track for the upcoming outdoors season. He’s an important part of the Honda family and it won’t be the same without him.

“That said, as a company and a team, we support Ken during this special time, and in his efforts to get back to full strength. We look forward to working closely with him during this period and attacking 2021 with him in top form.”

This season marks the second time that Craig is filling in for Roczen aboard the factory CRF450R for the complete outdoor season, also riding with the team during 2017 on his way to 11th in the final standings. In addition, he began the 2018 motocross series with Team Honda HRC, but was injured Glen Helen’s second round.

Perfect Portimao round secures Rea WorldSBK points-lead

Perfect Portimao round secures Rea WorldSBK points-lead

Record-breaking Locatelli makes it five WorldSSP wins in a row.

Image: Supplied.

Defending champion Jonathan Rea has hit the top of the standings in the 2020 Motul Superbike World Championship after sweeping the Portimao weekend in Portugal.

Kawasaki Racing Team rider Rea won Sunday’s Superpole race over Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha) and Loris Baz (Ten Kate Yamaha), before going on to stand atop the podium again in race two.

After initially facing a challenge from Razgatlioglu, with the Turkish sensation on the inside at turn one, Rea swept around the outside to keep the lead and pulled out a gap to claim a dominant victory, moving to the top of the championship by four points.

Aruba.it Racing Ducati’s Scott Redding claimed second place after making up three places from his starting position, the British rider ensuring Rea could not pull too far away in the points after having an almost race-long battle with Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha) for the runner-up.

Redding’s Ducati teammate Chaz Davies claimed a fourth place finish as he fought his way through the field, finishing two seconds clear of Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) as the Spanish rider secured his best finish of the 2020 season in P5, ahead of Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Team GoEleven Ducati).

BMW-mounted Tom Sykes secured a seventh-place finish, almost 12 seconds clear of the recovering Razgatlioglu after he crashed in turn five to remount and claim points. The top 10 was filled by Federico Caricasulo (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Junior Team) and Leandro Mercado (Motocorsa Racing). Baz was forced to retire after a fall at turn 15.

Rea taking the WorldSBK championship lead means there have now been four different leaders in the series after Razgatlioglu, Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Redding.

History was made in WorldSSP as rookie Andrea Locatelli (Bardahl Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team) claimed his fifth-consecutive win, becoming the first rider to achieve the milestone ahead of Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) and Isaac Vinales (Kallio Racing). Lachlan Epis (MPM Routz Racing) was a non-finisher.

A thrilling Supersport 300 race featured a seven-way battle for the win, which was won in dramatic fashion by Scott Deroue (MTM Kawasaki Motoport) after a red flag with just two laps to go, ahead of Unai Orradre (Yamaha MS Racing) and Yuta Okaya (MTM Kawasaki Motoport). Tom Edwards (Kawasaki ParkinGo Team) scored P7.

GasGas-mounted Coldenhoff victorious in MXGP restart

Red plate-holder Vialle extends advantage with MX2 overall at Kegums.

Image: Supplied.

A historic first victory for GasGas in the MXGP World Championship was earned by Glenn Coldenhoff at Kegums on Sunday, going 2-1 for the overall aboard the factory MC 450F.

The first of three-straight grands prix in Latvia, Coldenhoff trailed world champion Tim Gajser (Team HRC) in moto one, before standing atop the podium at the end of moto two.

Moto one belonged to Gajser after going back and forth with Coldenhoff, whole Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Kawasaki) claimed third position. The second outing saw Coldenhoff keep Jeremy Seewer (Monster Energy Yamaha) at bay, with Febvre again third.

Overall it was Coldenhoff who took the win ahead of Gajser – who was fifth in moto two – and the consistent Febvre. Current points-leader Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM) went 4-4 for fifth overall, while Australian Mitch Evans (Team HRC) was 19th on return from shoulder surgery.

MX2 belonged to moto one winner and red plate-holder Tom Vialle (Red Bull KTM), who went 1-2 for the round. After finishing 16th in the first race, Jago Geerts (Monster Energy Yamaha) won moto two to salvage sixth overall.

Instead, filling the round podium was F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk and teammate Mathys Boisrame, while Australian Jed Beaton (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) finished ninth, Nathan Crawford (Team Honda 114 Motorsports) 12th and his teammate Bailey Malkiewicz 27th.

Both Beaton and Crawford delivered strong performances in the second outing for sixth and eighth positions respectively, bouncing back from a more challenging opening affair earlier in the day when they were 15th and 14th respectively.

The 2020 MXGP World Championship will continue this Wednesday, 12 August, with a maiden mid-week round for the MXGP of Riga that will again be hosted at the Kegums circuit in Latvia.

MotoGP rookie Binder stuns with breakthrough KTM victory

South African takes astonishing Brno win three races into premier class career.

Image: Supplied.

Brad Binder and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing have stood atop the podium in MotoGP for the first time after the rookie delivered a shock win at Brno, three races into his premier class career.

In a race for the ages that saw the South African come good on his promise as a former Red Bull MotoGP Rookie, Moto3 champion and Moto2 race winner with the Austrian factory.

Behind Binder there were two more firsts after the fascinating race day shake-up in the Czech Republic, with Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) taking his first MotoGP rostrum and Johann Zarco back on the box in third to give Esponsorama Racing their first MotoGP podium despite a long lap penalty.

Morbidelli was the man fastest out the blocks as the lights went out, picking teammate Fabio Quartararo’s pocket round turn one and bolting into the distance almost immediately as Zarco lost out from pole.

Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) also managed to get past the number five as he launched from fourth into the top three, before he even struck for second and dispatched Quartararo. The Red Bull KTM duo of Pol Espargaro and Binder made great starts to slot into fourth and fifth too, leaving Zarco initially down in P6.

Binder was then a man on a mission, passing teammate Espargaro and then Aleix Espargaro, soon stuck to the rear wheel of Quartararo as Zarco followed suit to strike back against former teammate Pol Espargaro, but that would soon to serve up some drama.

Before that though, the number 44 made it through on lap six and immediately set sights on his teammate and Quartararo as the battle for second became a double factory KTM vs Quartararo fight. On lap nine, Binder was through on ‘El Diablo’, striking at turn three and Pol Espargaro was next through.

Drama was about to unfold at turn one the next time around as the KTM of Espargaro was a little wide and Zarco was committed on the inside, leaving both heading for the same piece of tarmac. As the KTM swept back to get the run up through turn two, the pair made contact and Espargaro went down, earning Zarco a penalty for the incident.

Despite the heartbreak for one orange bike, there was plenty still to celebrate a little ahead on track. Honing in on Morbidelli and the race lead, Binder wasn’t showing any signs of slowing up, reeling in the Yamaha at speed and soon within striking distance.

With nine laps left in Brno, the rookie sensation struck and Binder was in the lead of a MotoGP race for the first time, with the KTM immediately starting to bolt into clear air at the front.

On the same lap, Zarco took his long lap penalty and, despite pre-conceptions, that was a show in itself and one of the most spectacular moments of the race. Inch perfect on the right side of the line, he saw his gap back to Quartararo in fourth evaporate, but screamed out just ahead of his compatriot.

Meanwhile, Binder raced on, Morbidelli held firm and the battle at the front became one of nerves. The fight just behind the top two was starting to heat up though and, with Zarco staying ahead of Quartararo, it seemed like solid damage limitation for the championship leader if he held fourth.

The double Jerez winner was struggling, however. Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar), Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Tech3) were all starting to hunt him down, with the Suzuki striking first with five laps to go.

Nine-time world champion Rossi soon followed suit on the same lap and Quartararo quickly found himself lingering down in sixth. With four laps to go, the number 20 also fell victim to Oliveira’s charge and the focus shifted back to Zarco, who now had Rins for very close company.

Binder – barring a mistake – was a few kilometres from making some very big dreams a very big reality and Morbidelli looked secure to hit his own milestone too, but Rins was hot on the heels of the Ducati in third and the gap was just 0.6s between the GP19 and GSX-RR with a couple of laps to go – soon down to nothing as Zarco began the final lap.

First to complete that would be Binder in making it look easy, over four seconds clear after more than four years of tireless work from the Austrian factory to see the RC16 come home first and Binder etch his name into premier class and KTM folklore.

Childhood dreams realised across the board, Morbidelli continued the trend as he brought his Yamaha home second to secure a fantastic maiden MotoGP podium and he moves into P3 in the overall standings. In the duel for third, Rins was looking menacing on the final lap, but Zarco kept the Suzuki rider at bay.

The Frenchman closed the door and did so brilliantly to secure his first MotoGP podium since the 2018 Malaysian GP, making it a huge day for the Avintia team too, who achieve their first MotoGP podium to add to pole position gained on Saturday.

Fourth place for Rins remains remarkable, however, with the number 42 taking some valuable points after suffering a dislocation-fracture to the shoulder at the Spanish GP. Close behind was Rossi, who climbed to P5 from a 10th starting place in another great ride for ‘The Doctor’.

Oliveira finished sixth to cement his best premier class finish, but Quartararo won’t be too pleased to have finished 11 seconds from the win in seventh. Nevertheless, those are valuable points in the title race as key rivals remained behind him on race day.

Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) finished one second adrift of Quartararo in eighth and two seconds up the road from Jack Miller (Pramac Racing Ducati) after the Australian recovered from a tough start to pip Aleix Espargaro on the last lap.

In other key stories, Iker Lecuona (Red Bull KTM Tech3) lost the front and collected Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) in the early stages as the duo crashed out of contention.

Italtrans Racing Team’s Enea Bastianini produced perfection again in order to claim his second Moto2 victory in as many races, topping EG 0,0 Marc VDS’ Sam Lowes and American talent Joe Roberts (Tennor American Racing). Remy Gardner (SAG Team) finished 13th.

The Moto3 class saw Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing) produce a superb ride to claim his maiden Moto3 victory, the Italian leading over half the race to eventually fend off championship leader Albert Arenas (Gaviota Aspar Team) and Ai Ogura (Honda Team Asia).

Ferris seriously injured in Conondale training incident

Recover8 KTM Thor rider air-lifted to hospital with ‘several fractures’.

Triple Australian MX1 champion Dean Ferris is recovering in hospital on the Sunshine Coast after being seriously injured while practicing at Conondale on Saturday.

The Recover8 KTM Thor rider was stabilised and air-lifted from the Queensland circuit in a serious, but stable condition, according to the team.

Ferris has been diagnosed with ‘several fractured ribs and vertebrae’, an announcement confirmed this afternoon, and will be transported to Brisbane Hospital for further treatment and evaluation during the next week.

“The Recover8 KTM Thor racing team can confirm that three-time MX Nationals champion and MX1 team rider Dean Ferris was injured yesterday, Saturday, 8th August, whilst practicing at the Conondale circuit in QLD,” a statement read.

“Directly following the incident, Dean was air-lifted to a local hospital where he was stabilised for symptoms of back and rib pain. Dean has suffered several broken ribs and fractured vertebrae and is in a stable, but serious condition.

“We will announce further updates accordingly regarding Deans progress as his recovery develops and more information becomes available. Dean and Renae would like to take this time to thank all those involved at the Connondale club for helping Dean following the crash and also everyone for their phone calls and support.”

Further information on the status of Ferris’ condition is to be relayed by the Recover8-backed team once available. The Kyogle rider has been based in Queensland to contest the Sunshine State Motocross Series, winning the Gympie round last weekend.

After clinching three-straight Australian Motocross Championship titles with CDR Yamaha between 2016-2018, Ferris completed a partial season with Monster Energy Yamaha in the US last year.

Following a mutual separation with the team midway through the Pro Motocross season, Ferris joined forces with Raceline Performance and had been signed to contest the Australian championship with Recover8 KTM Thor prior to the pandemic and this latest injury setback.

It’s not clear when the 2020 season will commence domestically, with Motorcycling Australia (MA) still determining the series structure following the exit of former promoter Williams Event Management (WEM).

Director of WEM, Kevin Williams, is now the brand and business development manager of Raceline Performance and is an integral part of the RecoveR8 KTM Thor program that Ferris currently rides for.

“During this time Dean and Renae will not be taking any calls to solely focus on Dean’s recovery and we will release more information to the public accordingly once it becomes available to us,” Williams stated.

Rea displays dominance in WorldSBK race one at Portimao

Fourth-straight WorldSSP win of Locatelli equals series record.

Image: Supplied.

Kawasaki Racing Team’s defending champion Jonathan Rea took a commanding victory in race one of Motul Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) at Portimao on Saturday.

It was the perfect way to bounce back from Rea’s worst race finish in six years when he finished sixth at Jerez last time out, going on to win from pole position.

Rea was initially challenged by Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha) until the former pulled clear, but it was behind the leading duo where much of the action was taking place. Michael van der Mark eventually cemented P3 on the second of the official R1s.

Next of the Kawasakis, Alex Lowes finished in fourth, overcoming Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Team GoEleven Ducati), Loris Baz (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) and Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing Ducati), who had initially made his way from eighth to fight for a podium, but lost pace in the latter stages.

Finishing eighth was Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), ahead of Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC Honda) and Eugene Laverty (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), also inside the top 10.

OUTDO Kawasaki TPR’s Sandro Cortese was the only rider who crashed, on the last lap at turn 11. The German was transferred to Faro hospital following the incident where he will undergo surgery to stabilise a fractured vertebrae and showing no signs of neurological impairment. He also fractured his right tibia.

In World Supersport race one, Andrea Locatelli (Bardahl Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team) claimed victory as he equalled a record set three years ago by WorldSSP legend Kenan Sofuoglu by winning four-consecutive races. Joining him on the podium was Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) and with Raffaele de Rosa (MV Agusta Reparto Corse).

Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) had mounted pressure on Locatelli, but went down on lap 11 at turn five. He remounted to rejoin to race and crossed the line in sixth. Australian Lachlan Epis (MPM Routz Racing Yamaha) finished in 18th position.

The Supersport 300 World Championship race was won by 2018 champion Ana Carrasco (Kawasaki Provec Racing) over Jeffrey Buis (MTM Kawasaki Motoport), Tom Booth-Amos (RT Motorsports by SKM Racing) completed the podium. Kawasaki-mounted Australian Tom Edwards was a non-finisher.

Resurgent Zarco captures Brno MotoGP pole on-board GP19

Resurgent Zarco captures Brno MotoGP pole on-board GP19

Miller to start out of 14th after being unable to reach Q2 in qualifying.

Frenchman Johann Zarco has claimed a spectacular MotoGP pole position at Brno with Esponsorama Racing aboard his satellite Ducati GP19.

Zarco will lead countryman Fabio Quartararo away on Sunday after recording a 1m55.687s in Q2, with second of the Petronas Yamaha SRTs, Franco Morbidelli, completing the front row.

Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) equalled Aprilia’s best qualifying in MotoGP with fourth position on the grid, while behind him was Maverick Vinales (Monster Energy Yamaha) in P5.

Next was the pair of Red Bull KTMs with Pol Espargaro and Brad Binder sixth and seventh, however, it could have been a front row for the former if he didn’t have his best lap cancelled.

Top of the Ducati Team riders was Danilo Petrucci in eighth, while Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha) completed the top 10. Australia’s Jack Miller (Pramac Racing Ducati) will start from 14th.

There were some serious headlines further down the field too, as 2018 winner and last year’s runner-up Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) starts 18th after his worst ever premier class qualifying.

In Moto2, Joe Roberts (Tennor American Racing) repeated his Qatar GP qualifying heroics to earn a second Moto2 pole with a 2m01.692s, ahead of Sam Lowes (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) and Andalucia GP winner Enea Bastianini (Italtrans Racing Team). Remy Gardner (SAG Racing Team) starts from P22.

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Raul Fernandez was the main man to benefit from some Moto3 drama, as the Spaniard’s only flying lap of the session proved good enough to clinch a debut pole position, as many others missed their chance.

Fernandez will be joined on the front row by Gabriel Rodrigo (Kommerling Gresini Moto3) and SIC58 Squadra Corse’s Tatsuki Suzuki, who lost his perfect pole record in 2020 on Saturday.

Italian Francesco Bagnaia has been ruled out of the Brno round of MotoGP after fracturing his right tibia in Friday practice.

The Pramac Racing Ducati rider went down towards the end of FP1 in which he was 15th fastest, injuring his leg in the fall and potentially requiring surgery.

“Tomorrow morning I will be back in Italy,” Bagnaia said. “Luckily the fracture did not affect the ligaments of the knee, so the recovery time will be faster.

“I’m really sorry because this morning the feeling with the bike was really good. My goal is to be on track for the second race in Austria. I would like to thank all the medical staff, the Clinica Mobile, Pramac team, Ducati and the VR46 Riders Academy for their great support.”

Bagnaia – who has recently been linked to the second factory Ducati Team seat alongside Jack Miller in 2021 if Andrea Dovizioso cannot reach an agreement – will be replaced by official test rider Michele Pirro in Austria.

Friday practice in Portimao’s third round of the 2020 Motul Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) saw Toprak Razgatlioglu set the pace with his time set in FP1.

Razgatlioglu’s 1m42.103s was enough to prove quickest for the day as he topped the time-sheets ahead of Loris Baz (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha).

Baz was able to top FP2 as the top Independent rider, his time being four-tenths off Razgatlioglu’s time from the morning. Razgatlioglu’s teammate, Michael van der Mark, ended the day sixth fastest overall.

Third fastest was reigning champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) as he made it two manufacturers in the top three, while Kawasaki teammate Alex Lowes finished in eighth place overall.

Michael Ruben Rinaldi’s impressive form continued as he finished fourth for the day, ahead of points-leader Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing Ducati) as the lead factory Ducati rider in fifth place, with his teammate Chaz Davies further back in 12th.

In seventh position was Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), followed by Lowes, Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) and Eugene Laverty (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), who completed the top 10.

There was a familiar name on top of the time-sheets in World Supersport as Italian rookie Andrea Locatelli (Bardahl Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team) went fastest at 1m45.598s, leading Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) and Isaac Vinales (Kallio Racing). Australia’s Lachlan Epis rode his Yamaha to P18.
