Vinales takes pole in Austria after late challenge from Jack Miller

Aussie Remy Gardner stuns with Moto2 pole

Vinales takes pole from Miller in AustriaAfter a lacklustre performance in Friday practice Monster Energy Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales has surged to pole position at the myWorld Motorrad Grand Prix of Austria, but admitted in his post qualifying press conference that a podium finish is the most realistic goal.

Vinales survived a late challenge from Aussie Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) with the leading times being set within the final minute of qualifying. Championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) will complete the front row.

Lining up at the head of the second row is Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), who only minutes earlier had sensationally announced he will be parting ways with the factory Ducati outfit at the end of the 2020 season. Dovi went fastest with one minute remaining but was then picked off by both Vinales and Miller.

The Ducati pair will have history on their side as the Italian manufacturer has won every race at the Red Bull Ring since it’s return to the MotoGP calendar in 2016.

After topping Friday practice and Q4, Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) couldn’t repeat that form in Q2 and will line up in fifth position, while Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) completes the second row.

After taking his maiden podium at Brno last week, Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT)  will start Sunday’s race from the head of the third row, beside the second Suzuki of Alex Rins. Johan Zarco (Esponsorama Racing) will complete the third row with Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Indemitsu) rounding out the top ten. In what was an incredibly tight qualifying, the first four rows were covered by a mere half a second.

In Moto2, Remy Gardner (Onexox TKKR SAG Team) has made a stunning return to form to seal his second pole position in the category and steal the all-time Moto2 lap record at the Red Bull Ring in the process. The Australian will be joined on the front row by Jorge Martin (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Marcel Schrotter (Liqui Moly Intact GP).

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Raul Fernandez backed up his pole position at Brno last week with another P1, pipping championship leader Albert Arenas (Valresa Aspar Team) in the final seconds of the session. John McPhee (Petronas Sprinta Racing) completes the front row.

Ducati and Dovizioso set to part ways following 2020 season

Ducati and Dovizioso set to part ways following 2020 season

Decision made by Italian prior to Saturday qualifying at Red Bull Ring.

Italian Andrea Dovizioso is set to depart the factory Ducati Team at the conclusion of the 2020 MotoGP World Championship, it has been revealed on Saturday at Red Bull Ring.

The pair have been unable to agree to terms on a contract from 2021 and Ducati Team manager Davide Tardozzi indicated yesterday that a decision would be made following the Austrian double-header.

However, Dovizioso’s manager Simone Batistella suggested this afternoon on Sky Italy that it has in fact been decided that the 34-year-old will not remain at Ducati next season.

With options limited, a sabbatical could be on the cards for Dovizioso, save for a potential factory deal with Aprilia as it awaits the fate of Andrea Iannone. It’s understood that he intends to continue in the premier class.

“We have communicated to Ducati that Andrea has no intention of continuing for the next few years, that he now wants to concentrate on the next races, but that there are no conditions to continue together,” announced Batistella.

The news was then confirmed by Ducati sporting director Paulo Ciabatti: “We met Simone this morning here at Red Bull Ring and realised that unfortunately there are not the conditions to continue our relationship with Dovi beyond the end of the current contract.

“Ducati and Andrea will now fully concentrate on the remainder of the 2020 season, starting from tomorrow’s Austrian GP, with the common goal to add more wins to the 13 first places already achieved together and fight for the title until the end of the championship.”

With Australian Jack Miller already signed to the factory team for next year, he could be joined by current Pramac Racing teammate Francesco Bagnaia, unless triple MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo – a race winner with Ducati in 2018 – opts to come out of retirement and a deal can be struck.

There is also the possibility that Johann Zarco, fresh from claiming pole position and a podium with Esponsorama Racing aboard a GP19 at Brno last weekend, could be elevated directly into the official team in place of Dovizioso. Danilo Petrucci has already signed with KTM for 2021.

Dovizioso joined Ducati in 2013 and has finished runner-up in the standings behind Marc Marquez for the past three seasons, including 2017, 2018 and 2019. He also previously took third in the championship during 2011 with Honda.

KTM’s Espargaro tops Friday practice at Austrian MotoGP

KTM’s Espargaro tops Friday practice at Austrian MotoGP

Australia’s Miller eighth overall after topping damp second practice session.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pol Espargaro put the disappointment of Brno behind him to be fastest in a rain-affected Friday practice at the myWorld Motorrad Grand Prix of Austria.

Espargaro led most of the dry FP1 and posted a 1m56.502s, putting him just 0.044s ahead of two-time Red Bull Ring winner Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team).

In the continued absence of Marc Marquez, Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) led the Honda charge and rounded out the top three. Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) showed strong pace to finish fourth in the session, with all riders posting their fastest times in FP1.

Fifth place, and crucially, the first Yamaha, was Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) which made it five different manufacturers in the top five. Behind him in sixth was the first Ducati satellite rider Johan Zarco (Esponsorama Racing) with Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) in seventh.

Australian Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) put his Ducati in eighth, but also had the distinction of setting the fastest time in FP2 on a drying track. Lap times were several seconds slower in the second session, so FP1 results will take on extra importance with rain predicted for FP3 tomorrow and possibly the race on Sunday.

Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) were ninth and 10th respectively. Most riders were able to go out on slicks in the second session but the track had not dried enough for an attack on times.

Other big names outside the top 10 that will have to work hard to make the cut for Q1 include the factory Yamaha pair of Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP). They sit 11th and 13th with the second factory Ducati of Danilo Petrucci in between them in 12th.

The Red Bull Ring at Spielberg is one of the fastest circuits on the MotoGP calendar and also the home race for the KTM team, but Brno victor Brad Binder could only manage 16th place and will also be hoping for dry conditions tomorrow.

In Moto 2, Sam Lowes (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) topped both sessions despite late challenges, recording his fastest time of 1m28.955s lap in FP2. Jorge Martin (Red Bull KTM Ajo) also bettered his FP1 result, sitting just 0.010s behind Lowes with Marco Bezzecchi (Sky Racing Team VR46) in third. Aussie Remy Gardner (Onexox TKKR SAG Team) had a return to form and finished seventh on combined times.

Tony Arbolino (Rivacold Snipers Team) topped the combined Moto3 times courtesy of a 1m36.550s lap in FP1, with John McPhee (Petronas Sprinta Racing) second as most of the field set their fastest time in the morning session. Jaume Masia (Leopard Racing) completed the top three, while current championship leader Albert Arenas (Valresa Aspar Team) finished back in ninth.

Washougal cancelled as Loretta’s adds second Pro Motocross round

Washougal cancelled as Loretta’s adds second Pro Motocross round

Opening two rounds of 2020 season to be staged in Tennessee.

Image: Supplied.

MX Sports Pro Racing has announced the cancellation of the Washougal National, with Loretta Lynn’s instead scheduled to hold the opening two rounds of 2020 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross.

The decision was made following a meeting between the Race Leadership Team (RLT) and the series OEM partners.

The Washougal National had been previously approved at both the local and state level in Washington, based on the COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan that had been submitted by the organisers several months ago to the necessary regulatory agencies.

Continuing approval of the event had been reiterated from Clark County, within which Washougal MX Park is located, as recently as this morning, however, based on newly-imposed restrictions within the state of Washington as it relates to COVID-19 infections, it has decided that in the best interest of participants the event will be canceled.

“The decision by the Race Leadership Team and our OEM partners to cancel the Washougal National is both unexpected and disappointing,” said Roy Janson, director of competition at MX Sports Pro Racing.

“The comprehensive Health and Safety Plan, prepared specifically to address COVID-19 issues and related prevention and mitigation efforts, submitted and approved both at the local and state level, provided extensive directives designed to address every concern raised by these officials.

“The Health and Safety Plan, which is based on state policies currently in place under orders by the governor, is fully compliant with all CDC, state and county health department guidelines, and provided for pre-admission screening of all pro athletes and their crew members, including non-contact temperature testing prior to being allowed to access the venue.

“Ryan Huffman, the event organiser of the Washougal National, did everything within his power to organize a safe event for both professional and amateur competitors. We commend him for the extensive efforts and sacrifices made to make the 2020 Washougal National a reality.

“Unfortunately, as we have become increasingly aware, circumstances surrounding the spread of COVID-19 can change dramatically in a matter of hours. We did not reach this decision lightly and the circumstances are entirely out of Ryan’s control.

“We look forward to bringing the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship back to Washougal for the 2021 season. In the meantime, out of convenience to our teams and competitors, the logical decision was to return to Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in one week’s time.”

Tickets for round two at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch will go on sale tomorrow and will remain limited to 5000 spectators. It will be a single-day event featuring professional racing only, with no amateur support competition.

Argentine round of WorldSBK cancelled for 2020

Circuito San Juan Villicum to return once again from next year.

Image: Supplied.

Argentina has been removed from the 2020 Motul Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) calendar as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the FIM and Dorna WSBK Organization have confirmed.

The round was originally scheduled for 9-11 October and was to enter its third year of WorldSBK action, however the series’ scheduled return will instead be postponed until 2021 as part of a three-year contract.

“It is a great shame not to be going to one of the most atmospheric events on the calendar,” said Gregorio Lavilla, WorldSBK executive director.

“Health and safety come first and along with the travel restrictions, logistical challenges and the uncertainty of the immediate future, we regret not being able to find a solution that meets the needs of all.

“We look forward to welcoming Argentina and San Juan back onto the calendar in 2021, where the passionate Argentinean fans can cheer on their heroes again.”

All parties involved examined and evaluated every possible scenario to make sure the event went ahead as planned. However, given the current situation and the subsequent health and safety concerns, travel restrictions and logistical challenges, the solution is to postpone the event.

Spinal surgery a success as Ferris begins recovery period

Spinal surgery a success as Ferris begins recovery period

Multiple Australian champion due to spend at least six months off the bike.

Recover8 KTM Thor has confirmed three-time national champion Dean Ferris successfully underwent surgery on Wednesday to stabilise a spinal injury sustained while practicing at Conondale last weekend.

After suffering fractures to his vertebrae and ribs in the incident, Ferris was transferred from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane Hospital earlier in the week, where the operation was completed.

“Renae and I would like to take this time to thank everyone for the kind words and support across social media, the numerous calls and texts we received and finally everyone at the Conondale club who assisted me from the crash,” Ferris commented. “I also have to thank the team of doctors and surgeons between the two hospitals that have been a huge help with my recovery. This crash was unfortunate as I have been feeling great on the bike this year and itching to go racing.

“For now, my focus is solely on my rehab and getting strong enough to spend quality time with my family, chasing the kids around at the farm again. I have been here before with injuries and know the process, it is time to dedicate myself to the rehab with 100 percent focus and I know I can bounce back as strong as ever when it’s time to get back on the bike. I will update everyone of my progress accordingly and once again thank you to the team, the industry and my fans for the unwavering support.”

While it’s too soon to confirm when Ferris will be back on the bike, the Recover8 KTM Thor team has indicated that it won’t be until 2021 in six to eight months time. It isn’t yet clear if the Australian Motocross Championship will take place this year as a result of COVID-19.

“Dean has a long road ahead of him in regards to recovery, but I am very pleased to report the surgery was successful and there have been no further complications from the back injury,” explained Kevin Williams, business development manager of Raceline Performance. “Dean has been able to get out of bed under his own power and walk around a little since surgery was completed and all reports are that he will make a full recovery.

“I know the question everyone wants to ask is, when will Dean be back on the bike? At this stage it is early days, but with Dean’s championship mindset I know he will dedicate himself to rehabilitation and his recovery to ensure he is ready for a return to riding as soon as possible. We are optimistically anticipating a six- to eight-month recovery period before the injuries are stable enough to begin riding again.”

Star Racing Yamaha re-signs Cooper in contract extension

Emerging title contender to remain aboard YZ250F through 2021 at least.

Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha has extended its agreement with Justin Cooper in a deal that will see him complete his 250 class career aboard the YZ250F.

Cooper, 22, has been with the factory Yamaha team since turning professional in 2017 and will be with Star Racing for at least the 2021 season.

“I’m pleased to announce that I have re-signed with the Star Yamaha Racing team and will finish my 250 class career with them,” Cooper confirmed. “We’ve accomplished some good things together, but there are great things that lie ahead!”

This year is Cooper’s third full campaign in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, finishing third overall in both 2018 and 2019. He earned a lone overall victory in Florida last season via a 2-2 scorecard.

Cooper was runner-up in last year’s Monster Energy Supercross 250SX East standings, before also claiming second in the 2020 championship on the western region. He captured a first-career victory at Anaheim 1 this year.

Wednesday rise sees Cairoli back on top in MXGP of Riga

Geerts completes first double in MX2 to close in on points-lead.

Red Bull KTM’s Antonio Cairoli stood back atop the MXGP World Championship podium on Wednesday in the GP of Riga, as Jago Geerts claimed a spectacular double in MX2.

Cairoli controlled the opening moto to win ahead of Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Kawasaki) and Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM), who recovered from an opening lap fall.

The second outing – drama-packed much like the first – saw a late error of Herlings that also caused Cairoli to go down allow pole-setter Arminas Jasikonis (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), placing him fourth overall.

Second in the moto was Jeremy Seewer (Monster Energy Yamaha) ahead of Herlings and Cairoli once they remounted, handing Cairoli his first overall in over a year from Seewer and Herlings.

Australia’s Mitch Evans showed signs of improvement with a better start in moto two, going 26-15 for 19th overall. Team HRC teammate Tim Gajser exited moto one after two crashes, but was fifth in the second affair.

The MX2 round belonged to Monster Energy Yamaha’s Jago Geerts as he went 1-1, leading F&H Kawasaki Racing teammates Roan Van de Moosdijk and teammate Mathys Boisrame.

Of the Australians, Jed Beaton (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) was sixth, Bailey Maliewicz (Team Honda 114 Motorsports) 19th and his teammate Nathan Crawford a non-scorer in both motos.

Travel restrictions force cancellation of Suzuka 8 Hours

Travel restrictions force cancellation of Suzuka 8 Hours

International riders and teams unable to enter Japan in November.

Image: Supplied.

One of the biggest races on the international calendar, the Suzuka 8 Hours, has been cancelled for 2020 due to travel restrictions that won’t enable overseas riders to enter Japan.

The FIM, Eurosport Events – promoter of the Endurance World Championship (EWC) and Suzuka race organiser Mobilityland have agreed to call the event off for this year.

Initially rescheduled to the beginning of November as the EWC final, instead the Suzuka 8 Hours will be cancelled for the first time since its creation in 1978.

“With anguish, we find no alternative but to make the decision to cancel it in consideration of the continued spread of the coronavirus pandemic,” said Kaoru Tanaka, president representative director of Mobilityland Corporation.

“And the fact that there is no prospect of deregulation of immigration restrictions on visitors from abroad at this stage in Japan. Once again, we extend our apologies and regrets to all the fans who were looking forward to attending the Suzuka 8 Hours.

“In closing, let us say that we are determined to make preparations so that the 2021 Suzuka 8 Hours event will be even more enjoyable for the fans than ever before.”

François Ribeiro, head of Eurosport Events, added: “We have been working hard with Mobilityland to reschedule the race from July to November – a first since 1978 – and then to organise entry into Japan for international teams and riders with a special business visa.

“Our hopes have evaporated with immigration restrictions for foreigners. The decision was made not to run this iconic race as a domestic event. The Suzuka 8 Hours, the most prestigious endurance race in the world over the last 40 years, shall not run without top international riders.”

Brookes to ‘move on’ following Irwin incident in BSB restart

Brookes to ‘move on’ following Irwin incident in BSB restart

Mixed start to 2020 campaign for title favourite at Donington Park.

Image: Supplied.

Experienced Australian Josh Brookes has vowed to ‘move on’ after contact with Andrew Irwin saw him crash out of race three at Donington Park in the opening round of the 2020 British Superbike Championship (BSB).

VisionTrack Ducati’s Brookes went 3-6 in the opening pair of races for the weekend, before the high-speed incident in the final encounter ended his weekend prematurely. Race stewards later disqualified Irwin for the clash.

“What can I say?” Brookes recalled. “Despite a podium, I wasn’t happy with the bike in race one, so we made some changes overnight. They really didn’t make a lot of difference in today’s opening race and I ended up making a couple of silly mistakes, so I’ll take the blame for that one.

“We had to change the bike again for the third race and that worked as we were competitive and had I got a better start – I think I could have gone with Tommy [Bridewell]. And then I encountered the situation with Irwin. Glenn got past me fine, but Andrew touched me as he went past and down I went. These things happen, so we move on and hope for better results at Snetterton.”

Honda-mounted Irwin rode to both opening race wins of the year, before Ducati rider Tommy Bridewell won race three, however it’s Glenn Irwin who leads the standings following round one. Brookes currently sits seventh in points.
