Recovering Jasikonis awake and cleared of further injuries

MXGP star makes immense improvements following Lombardia crash.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna has announced that MXGP team rider Arminas Jasikonis’ condition is improving, woken from the medically-induced coma that he was placed in on Sunday following Lombardia.

Still hospitalised in Cremona, Italy, Jasikonis was quickly able to recognise and speak with his family, as well as the medical staff around him both in Lithuanian and English.

In relieving news from Husqvarna, Jasikonis can also move his body unaided, is in no pain and despite being understandably tired, is thankfully over the worst of his injury and can soon start his rehabilitation.

“Honestly, I have never been so happy to comment on one of my riders,” Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing MXGP team manager Antti Pyrhonen said. “To be able to say that AJ is okay, that he is going to be okay, it’s a kind of miracle.

“These last few days since his accident have been so, so emotionally draining for everyone close to AJ and just the worst of times. When he woke, when we realised that he could talk, that he could move all of his arms and legs, that he was in no pain and had no other injuries, it’s still almost impossible to put into words how incredible that feeling was.

“Of course, AJ still has some way to go before he is fully recovered and understandably he is still very tired, but the worst is now behind him and he can soon start his recovery.

“Again, I want to say a sincere thank you to every single person who had AJ in their thoughts during the last few days, to the overwhelming support and positivity we received from the MXGP paddock and the global motocross community.

“I want to thank everyone at Husqvarna Motorcycles in Austria, to Robert Jonas and Heinz Kinigadner and also to our team owner Kimi [Raikkonen], who immediately started organising many things behind the scenes. Everyone in the team is hugely thankful for this positive outcome and so, so relieved that AJ will be okay.”

The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team has extended their thanks to all of the medical staff and to those from around the world that expressed overwhelming support for him during the last few days.

Australian Motocross Championship officially cancelled for 2020

Australian Motocross Championship officially cancelled for 2020

New-look outdoor season won’t go ahead under Motorcycling Australia this year.

Image: Foremost Media.

Motorcycling Australia (MA) has cancelled the 2020 Australian Motocross Championship, unable to commit to launching the revamped series due to the uncertainty of state border restrictions.

Following longtime promoter Williams Event Management’s exit from the sport in June, MA was poised to take over the series, which has continually been delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the Australian Supercross Championship already being cancelled last month, it was expected that the motocross season could take place during November and December pending border closures, however, that option has now been dropped by the sport’s governing body. It will instead now work toward planning for 2021.

“Due to the ongoing uncertainty around state government COVID-19 border restrictions, Motorcycling Australia, after consultation with key stakeholders, have been forced to make the difficult decision to abandon any further attempts to conduct the 2020 Australian Motocross Championship,” a statement announced.

“MA reviewed the championship operations including the format and potential event dates, in consultation with industry, teams, riders and clubs to see if it was possible to run the championship during this COVID-19 period.

“Despite significant work by MA over recent months in exploring all possible options to hold the championship, the uncertainly around state government COVID-19 border restrictions, has meant it is not possible to run the championship in 2020.

“MA sincerely thank all stakeholders, clubs, teams and riders for their support and patience, but this late in the year has proven too difficult to start the championship without clear plans from state government’s around state borders being reopened.”

The decision comes as a devastating blow for the professional teams and riders set to compete in the AUS Motocross series this season, following what has been a year filled with uncertainty since the coronavirus put the world on pause earlier this year.

Former world champion Romain Febvre has taken his first win with Monster Energy Kawasaki at the Citta di Mantova round of the 2020 MXGP World Championship on Wednesday, as Thomas Kjer Olsen made his way back atop the MX2 podium.

The opening moto saw rookie Jorge Prado (Red Bull KTM) keep last Sunday’s winner Jeremy Seewer (Monster Energy Yamaha) at bay for the win, with Febvre crossing the line in third.

Later, it was Febvre who won the second moto ahead of a resurgent Gautier Paulin (Monster Energy Yamaha) and championship leader Gajser, who now holds a five-point lead in the standings over Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM). He was fourth overall at round 10.

Winning the opening moto of the day in MX2 set Olsen up for his first overall of the year, claiming second in moto two in another strong performance prior to his premier class switch next year.

Olsen won moto one ahead of early leader Maxime Renaux (Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori J1 Racing) and red plate-holder Tom Vialle (Red Bull KTM), before the second moto saw Vialle win over Olsen and Roan Van De Moosdijk (F&H Kawasaki Racing). The round podium featured Olsen, Vialle and Van De Moosdijk.

Of the Australians, Mitch Evans (Team HRC) went 6-7 for eighth overall in MXGP, while Jed Beaton (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) was sixth overall, Bailey Malkiewicz (Team Honda 114 Motorsports) 13th following P7 in moto two and Nathan Crawford (Team Honda 114 Motorsports) unfortunately had to exit following a fall in moto one. He’s aiming to return this Sunday, again at Mantova.

Concussion forces Tonus out of remaining Mantova GPs

Monster Energy Yamaha rider withdraws from Wednesday and Sunday.

A minor concussion sustained in Sunday’s first of three MXGP rounds at Mantova will force Arnaud Tonus out of the Wednesday and Sunday races, Monster Energy Yamaha has confirmed.

After going down in the opening moto of the weekend, Tonus sat out the second moto as a precaution and he has since returned home to Switzerland to ensure a full recovery.

“It’s a shame I can’t race,” Tonus said. “The plan is to have three days really easy to let the brain recover as much as possible and, by the end of the week, I will start some brain training to reactivate the system. Normally I should be able to ride in 10 days it will all depend on the symptoms and how I recover.”

Over the next week, the health of Tonus will be monitored and his return to racing will be decided only after consultation. Following the Citta di Mantova and Europe rounds, the next event will be on 11 October with the MXGP of Spain. He is currently 19th in the standings.

Husqvarna’s Jasikonis placed in medically-induced coma

Team releases official update on MXGP contender following Lombardia.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna has released an official update on MXGP team rider Arminas Jasikonis, who has been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury and placed in a medically-induced coma following Lombardia.

Currently hospitalised in Cremona, Italy, Jasikonis was seriously injured in moto two at round nine of the world championship yesterday.

As is routine procedure with injuries of this type, Jasikonis has been placed in a medically-induced coma in order to stabilise his situation. Due to the serious nature of injuries of this kind, he remains in a coma and is receiving ongoing specialist care.

“This is a very serious situation for Arminas and a very difficult time for his family and all involved in the team,” said Antti Pyrhonen, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing MXGP team manager. “After AJ was flown to hospital on Sunday night, he was placed in a medically-induced coma because of the trauma he suffered to his brain.

“Really, there is not much else to say at this time – this is the situation, a situation that is very serious and difficult for everyone, and now we have to wait and stay positive.

“He has the best medical care around him and we are in close contact with both the specialists at the hospital here in Italy, but also in Innsbruck, Austria. Thank you to everyone who has expressed their concerns and wishes AJ all the best.”

In a statement, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna thanked all medical staff that have assisted Jasikonis, as well as the numerous well-wishers both from within the MXGP paddock and the wider motorcycle community.

Beaton able to overcome nerves in breakout MX2 moto win

Milestone achievement for Australian export in the world championship.

Australian international Jed Beaton was able to keep it together despite nerves rising on his way to a first moto win in the MX2 World Championship, reaching an important milestone at Mantova.

Beaton, 22, is in his fourth season of competing in Europe, including three in the MX2 category and overcoming a mixture of injuries in that time.

The MXGP of Lombardia marked Beaton’s second overall podium result in a row, improving from third at the Emilia Romagna round to second with 7-2 finishes on Sunday behind Rockstar Energy Husqvarna teammate Thomas Kjer Olsen.

“I can’t explain how happy I am to have won the second moto today,” Beaton commented. “I had a great start in race two and got into the lead early on lap three – I then had a clear track and just focussed on my lines.

“As the race wore on I got a little nervous, but kept it together. I did make a few mistakes but held on for the win. It’s been a tough year until this point and it’s all coming together now. The team have been great and I’m so happy and pleased for them, too. I’m looking forward to Wednesday now.”

Beaton is now sitting fourth in the current MX2 World Championship standings, 100 points outside of red plate-holder Tom Vialle (Red Bull KTM) following the opening nine rounds of the season.

First-career MXGP win boosts Seewer into title contention

First-career MXGP win boosts Seewer into title contention

Husqvarna team 1-2 in MX2 at Lombardia from Olsen and Beaton.

A maiden victory in the MXGP of Lombardia has boosted Jeremy Seewer into title contention, as Thomas Kjer Olsen and moto two winner Jed Beaton delivered a Husqvarna 1-2 in MX2.

Seewer won the first moto of the day ahead of Red Bull KTM duo Jorge Prado and Antonio Cairoli, later earning third in moto two to clinch the round.

The second moto was taken out by world champion Tim Gajser (Team HRC), who was eighth in moto one, from Glenn Coldenhoff (Standing Construct GasGas) and Seewer. Overall it was Seewer, Coldenhoff and Prado on the podium.

Seewer had initially crossed the finish in sixth, but penalties were applied to Prado, Prado, Gautier Paulin (Monster Energy Yamaha) and Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Kawasaki) for ‘not respecting a waved yellow flag’.

Australian Mitch Evans (Team HRC) was 13th overall at Mantova after he recorded 18-9 results. He struggled to get out of the gate in both races and crashed in the first turn of moto one, but will look to rebound on Wednesday.

Defending champion Gajser leads the point-standings following the ninth round of the season, now four points clear of nine-time world champion Cairoli, with Seewer a further 11 behind following his victory on Sunday.

Image: Supplied.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna teammates Olsen and Beaton were first and second overall in MX2, with consistent results of 4-2 sealing the round for Olsen.

Beaton took seventh in the opening moto, but quickly worked his way into the lead during moto two and managed to keep Ben Watson (Monster Energy Yamaha) at bay for his first-career race victory. Watson completed the round podium in P3.

Of the other Australians in the field, Bailey Malkiewicz went 10-23 for 15th overall, with Team Honda 114 Motorsports teammate Nathan Crawford credited 21st overall after scoring points for 16th in moto two.

Moto one was won by world championship leader Tom Vialle (Red Bull KTM), but he had a troubled second outing for 14th and ended up seventh overall. Still, he leads the standings by 30 points.

The 2020 MXGP World Championship will continue this Wednesday, 30 September, with the MXGP of Citta di Mantova, which will mark the second of three rounds at the Italian circuit this week.

Quartararo bounces back at Catalunya MotoGP

Marini wins again in Moto2 – Binder takes out Moto3.

Image: Supplied

Fabio Quartararo and the Petronas Yamaha SRT team have triumphed in Barcelona at the Gran Premio de Catalunya and surged to the top of the MotoGP championship standings on what was also an excellent day for Team Suzuki Ecstar, with Joan Mir and Alex Rins completing the podium.

There was drama from the outset, however, as championship leader Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) was wiped out in the opening corner after being struck by the fallen Johan Zarco (Esponsorama Racing). Danilo Petrucci had made a strong move and almost went down himself to get past Zarco, touching Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) on the way through. Zarco applied his front brake, causing him to fall. “If I do not touch the brake I think I will anyway touch Danilo, so it could have been the same end,” Zarco commented after the race. The outcome: zero points for Zarco and a raging Dovizioso.

During the drama, Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) had dropped back to 15th place while up front, Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) was setting the pace with Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) hot on his tail.
Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Quartararo were left in pursuit, with both getting the better of Miller by the end of the opening lap. By lap eight Quartararo was showing his intention, applying pressure on Morbidelli with Rossi and Miller close behind. Mir was next, waiting for an opportunity. Quartararo assumed the lead from Morbidelli, with the latter having a big moment into turn one with fourteen laps to go, running wide and allowing Rossi through.
Behind them, Miller was struggling to keep Mir at bay but on lap sixteen, just as ‘The Doctor’ looked certain for that elusive 200th podium in his 350th premier class race start, Rossi fell.

Up front Quartararo was now three seconds clear of Morbidelli and then a mistake from Miller let Mir through for the final podium slot. With seven laps to run, Mir wanted more and was only half a second off Morbidelli. The situation only got worse for Miller, as the second Suzuki of Rins loomed behind him. With five laps to go, Rins made his move, putting the Suzuki’s into third and fourth.

With four laps remaining, Quartararo was managing the situation out front with an almost three second gap, but Mir was 0.7s quicker per lap and right on the tail of Moridelli. Hungry for second, Mir made his move on the penultimate lap, cutting past Morbidelli while Rins joined the action, also making his move to put both Suzuki’s on the podium.
This was the first time both Suzuki’s were on the box since Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi at Misano in 2007.

Quartararo held on for an emotional victory, one which sees him take an eight point advantage in the championship from Mir while an ecstatic Rins celebrated a brilliant podium after having qualified in 13th position.
Morbidelli and Miller were fourth and fifth respectively with Pecco Bagnaia (Pramac Racing) in sixth.
Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Indemitsu) was the first Honda home in seventh while Petrucci recovered to eighth. The shock was Maverick Viñales, struggling through the race to ninth and now sitting third in the championship, 28 points behind Quartararo. A gallant Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) rounded out the top ten after suffering ligament damage in his ankle during the week, to go with his already mangled arm.

In Moto2 Luca Marini (Sky Racing Team VR46) was able to outlast the challenge from Sam Lowes (EG 0,0 Marc VDS), taking a pivotal victory at the half way point in the season to boost his championship lead to twenty points. Fabio Di Giannantonio (HDR Heidrun Speed Up) took third, scoring his maiden podium for the year.

After an excellent start from Marini, Lowes attacked to take the lead with seven laps remaining. Marini kept the pressure on, wearing down his opponent, pouncing on the penultimate lap at turn one.

Australian Remy Gardner (OneXOX TKKR SAG Team) endure a torrid weekend of penalties to finish a disappointing 16th. Gardner had to take a long lap penalty for exceeding track limits, as well as the six grid spot penalty for the yellow flag crash on Friday. After the race Gardner explained tyres were also an issue, saying, “It was like riding on ice and it sucks when you give it one hundred percent all weekend and a tyre company lets you down when it matters. It was something out of our control and we have to just focus on the next one. I think we could have been in the top ten, the only consolation is that we leave the weekend with no further injury. I am sore but we dug deep, and I will rest now to be in even better shape for France.”

Moto3 saw Darryn Binder (CIP – Green Power) become a first time Grand Prix winner, getting the better of Tony Arbolino (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing) on the final lap. There was drama further back as John McPhee (Petronas Sprinta Racing) crashed out and collided with Albert Arenas (Gaviota Aspar Tea, Moto3). This means Arenas loses his championship lead with Ai Ogura (Honda Team Asia) now out in front with a P11 result.

Morbidelli leads all Yamaha front row in Catalunya

Luca Marini grabs pole and a lap record in Moto2 – Gardner starts from 16th.

Image: Supplied

Franco Morbidelli and the Petronas Yamaha SRT team have led a Yamaha dominated front row at the Gran Premio de Catalunya in Barcelona while the championship leader, Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso, will start from P17. Morbidelli took his maiden premier class pole position ahead of teammate Fabio Quartararo with future teammate and current Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP rider, Valentino Rossi completing the front row.

Morbidelli was upbeat about the race, saying, “It’s always difficult to beat Fabio on a hot lap, so I’m very happy about qualifying today. I was feeling great on the bike and I felt that I could push a lot, on both tyres as well.” He went on to comment about Rossi becoming his teammate for next season, adding, “I also want to congratulate Valentino on one more year in MotoGP and tell him that he is moving to a great team. It will be nice to have him as a team-mate.”

Australian Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) made the most of Q1, setting the fastest time in that session before going on to qualify fourth ahead of Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Johan Zarco (Esponsorama Racing).

Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) heads up the third row and looks to have strong race pace, as does Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) who lines up beside him. The third row is completed by the Ducati Team’s Danilo Petrucci, the fastest of the factory Ducati’s on the grid.

The second Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine of Brad Binder lines up at the head of row four, with Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Indemitsu) the second rider to make it through from Q1.

Dovizioso has the most to lose from this race starting from P17, the championship leader having trouble under brakes and not able to run at the front.

Image: Supplied

In Moto2 it was Luca Marini (Sky Racing Team VR46) back on pole position with a new lap record of 1m 43.355s, saying afterwards he expects a strong challenge from Sam Lowes (EG 0,0 Marc VDS). “I’m very happy to start from pole because it will be important tomorrow, but I think Speed Up and Sam are strong here so it won’t be an easy race.”
Jorge Navarro (HDR Heidrun Speed Up) broke the Kalex stranglehold for one lap pace to take second, with Misano podium finisher Sam Lowes (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) completing the front row. Crucially, Marini’s teammate Marco Bezzechi (Sky Racing Team VR46) starts back in sixth while Enea Bastianini (Italtrans Racing Team) is starting from tenth.
Australian Remy Gardner (OneXOX TKKR SAG Team) qualified in tenth but will cop a six spot penalty after his crash in practice under yellow flags was penalised.

Moto3 featured another lap record for pole as Tony Arbolino (Rivacold Snipers Team) put in a 1m 47.762s lap for top spot. Raul Fernandez (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Gabriel Rodrigo (Kömmerling Gresini Moto3) completed the front row and remarkably had identical lap times. The second fastest lap of Fernandez means that he took second spot.

Statement ride from Osborne with pivotal WW Ranch sweep

Statement ride from Osborne with pivotal WW Ranch sweep

Another 250MX double for Ferrandis at WW Motocross Park.

Image: Octopi Media.

450MX red plate-holder Zach Osborne has captured the most critical win of his Lucas Oil Pro Motocross career at WW Ranch with a spectacular 1-1 result.

A convincing effort from Osborne in the opening 450MX moto saw him strike in the final five minutes, moving by both Chase Sexton (Team Honda HRC) and Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) to go on and win by 2.733s.

It was Cianciarulo and Sexton who were up front throughout much of the moto, with the latter applying pressure and attempting a pass at halfway, but Cianciarulo remained composed.

Few anticipated the attack of Osborne, however, elevating his pace and going on to make a statement with the win over the rookie, Cianciarulo and a late move from Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) saw him take Sexton – who appeared to go down on the final lap – for P3 despite a heavy practice crash earlier.

Finishing fifth was Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha), followed by Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki), Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM WPS), Joey Savatgy (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki), Fredrik Noren (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki) and Christian Craig (Team Honda HRC).

Osborne made it a perfect round in Jacksonville by getting out front by halfway and winning with a 4.201s margin, but not before he had to fend off a late surge from defending champion Tomac.

It was initially Cianciarulo who led the way until he and Musquin made contact, which allowed the Frenchman to take his turn at the front. It was soon Osborne who charged past, however, and that is where he would remain in a brilliant way to bounce back from his troubles of a week ago.

Behind Osborne and Tomac, Musquin settled into third position, in front of Max Anstie (HEP Motorsports Suzuki), Sexton, Baggett, Cianciarulo, Noren, Savatgy and Craig. After a strong start, Barcia went down while in P2 on the opening lap, forced to pit for repairs and eventually working his way back into the points for 13th.

The overall podium saw Osborne joined by Musquin and Tomac, which has allowed Osborne to stretch his series lead out to 29 points over Cianciarulo – fourth today – and another point in front of Musquin with two rounds left to run.

Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha’s Dylan Ferrandis took one step closer toward the 250MX crown with another 1-1 sweep at WW Motocross Park.

There was no halting Ferrandis on his way to the victory in 250MX moto one, hitting the lead by lap three and then controlling his advantage at the front for an eventual 9.655s victory.

Behind him, Australian teenager Jett Lawrence (Geico Honda) sliced his way through the chasing pack for second, taking points from teammate Jeremy Martin (Geico Honda) in third.

Martin benefited from a late error of RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) to earn that final place on the podium, ahead of Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) and Alex Martin (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki).

Positions six through 10 were Hunter Lawrence (Geico Honda), Shane McElrath (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) after claiming the holeshot, Jo Shimoda (Geico Honda), Cameron McAdoo (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and Carson Mumford (Geico Honda).

It was another commanding ride from Ferrandis in the second moto, scoring a clean-sweep for the second round in a row with a dominant 15.304s buffer to early leader Cooper in second.

A late pass from Jeremy Martin saw him climb to third, getting the better of McElrath in the final laps, with Jett Lawrence working his was into fifth, but just short of the overall podium once again.

P6 was a great way to rebound for Hampshire, as Alex Martin – after tangling with brother Jeremy and going down – was seventh, McAdoo eighth, Brandon Hartranft (TLD Red Bull KTM) ninth and Shimoda 10th. Hunter Lawrence went out with a mechanical.

Overall for the round, Ferrandis stood atop the podium over Cooper in his first top three of the season and Jeremy Martin took third. Ferrandis now has a 13-point lead in the standings with two rounds remaining.

Next on the schedule is the Thunder Valley national in Colorado, next Saturday, 3 October, for the penultimate round of the 2020 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.
