Reigning champion Troy Herfoss has highlighted the importance that Winton’s fifth round plays in his bid for the 2019 Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) this weekend, as the points chase remains tight amongst the top six riders.

Following a mixed season so far, the Penrite Honda Racing believes his feeling with the bike is the best it’s been since wrapping up last year’s title at the Victorian venue, promoting a boost of confidence ahead of Sunday’s pair of races.

“Winton is a pretty important round at this point in the championship,” commented Herfoss. “It’s been an up and down series for a lot of people – a few have had some bad luck and others have kept themselves in it through consistency – so it is tight in the points.

“There are a number of guys who could capitalise on a strong round at Winton and, honestly, I feel the best on the bike since I did at this track last year when I won the championship. The test that we had here was really, really good for us, so I’m looking forward to getting out there no matter what the conditions are.”

The number one is ranked fourth in the championship standings, 15 points behind series leader Mike Jones (DesmoSport Ducati).

Beirer calls for MXoN shake-up amid Vialle Team France controversy

Beirer calls for MXoN shake-up amid Vialle Team France controversy

Motorsport director speaks out over Team France excluding Vialle from Assen event.

Words: Adam Wheeler

KTM motorsports director Pit Beirer has asked for a shake-up in the way national federations approach the annual Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) amid Tom Vialle’s ejection from Team France over a logo dispute for Assen’s 2019 edition.

The former Team Germany representative – who won so emphatically at Nismes in 1997 – was speaking in the wake of the Red Bull KTM rider’s exclusion from a debut appearance for Team France after a dispute over cap logo space.

The jostling for prominent placement of race team and federation sponsors on the special kit used for the one-off fixture is a recurring problem and has affected various other teams in the past.

The 46-year-old firmly believes that federations have to be more aware and respectful of the brands and factory squads that bring their whole competition structure to circuits at the end of a long season.

“As fans we all look forward to the MXoN,” said Beirer. “It is a special event with a special atmosphere and one of the biggest audiences for our sport of the year. In a way it can be compared to a national soccer team, but the big difference is that we roll on our own costs. Despite the fact that we have fantastic relationships with most federations we have no financial support from any during the whole season.

“I have to build, organise and make contracts for a race team for 365 days of the year and that means we need the help of sponsors to be at the highest professional level – and in this I can speak for all of my colleagues and other brands in the paddock who are in a similar position.

“For Federations to then come into the structure for one race of the year and kick those sponsors and partners into touch is not acceptable. If they provided support and backing at any time then this would mean a different discussion but otherwise we often go racing with multi-million dollar budgets and for them to want to come in a jump on the train and dictate terms is not correct.”

Beirer admitted to being ‘frustrated’ by the situation that saw Vialle replaced by Maxime Renaux in the reigning champions’ three-man line-up. Vialle has been outstanding in his rookie season in the MX2 World Championship and his first term as a factory rider, taking six podiums, his first win two weeks ago in Sweden and is vying for third place in the MX2 standings.

The KTM boss is keen for better compromise to avoid similar situations occurring in the future for what is one of the sport’s largest promotional windows.

“There has to be give-and-take,” he stressed. “There is no question in my mind that the MXoN is about country colours and racing for the flag and – as a brand – I am happy to step back in that respect and still put the use of our trucks, staff and resources and buy all the extra passes for our team to be there, but I cannot ignore our sponsors who make the team happen for the rest of the year and to whom I am thankful.

“It is not because we have any pressure from those sponsors but because this is the right thing to do. This unfair compromise I won’t accept any longer and now it is really sad because a young rider who really deserves his place on the team has been given a ‘no-go’.

“We are climbing up to 25 races a year and I think the Motocross of Nations needs to be re-thought in the way is it put together. We like to have an open-house policy with our team and we don’t mind federation managers and staff coming into co-ordinate what is necessary for one event, but there is a limit and there should be a compromise as well as a healthy working relationship and understanding.

“The country should be on the front row at the Nations, but it has to be a friendship because all the costs are still paid by us.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing will see Jeffrey Herlings and Jorge Prado race for Team Holland and Team Spain at Assen on 28- 29 September.

World title sinking in for Gajser ahead of Turkish MXGP

Honda HRC contender refocused on this weekend’s penultimate round.

Tim Gajser says his 2019 MXGP World Championship is sinking in after extended downtime between races, as the series heads to Turkey this weekend for the penultimate round.

The Honda HRC rider has been overwhelmed with media attention from his home country Slovenia, making for a busy month in Agust after claiming the title at the Swedish grand prix before travelling to Italy for the MXGP of Imola.

“Since Sweden we’ve had quite a busy couple of weeks because of all the Slovenian media who want to speak to me after winning the MXGP World championship,” said Gajser. “We had a cool parade too in Maribor with a lot of fans which was nice. A lot of fans have spoken to me and reached out to me and it is just amazing to be champion again, and I think it is finally sinking in that I have achieved the title.

“It’s all been crazy with Sweden the week after winning in Imola so now that I had a little bit of time to think, it has become real. However I was also able to train quite hard though so I’m feeling ready and I can’t wait to go to Turkey. I really liked the track last year as it was quite technical with some nice jumps, especially after a weekend off from racing.

“There are two races to go in the MXGPs and then the Motocross of Nations and then I’ll do Monster Cup so in total there are four races and I’m feeling really motivated to do well in each of them. A big thanks to my fans and now I hope to go out and have fun in these last four events.”

The MXGP series will wrap up in Shanghai, China, one week after the upcoming Turkish grand prix.

Mike Jones is feeling confident ahead of Winton’s fifth stop of the 2019 Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship this weekend, the points leader gaining valuable seat time at a Victorian state championship round while also experiencing a positive test at the round five venue.

The DesmoSport Ducati ace holds down a slender one-point lead over the ever-consistent Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team), with the former champion eager to clinch his first overall victory this season this Sunday.

“We had a few days testing at Winton a few weeks ago and although we still have some work to do to get a faster single lap time, I’m feeling really good about the weekend,” said Jones. “Ben and Paul continue to work hard behind the scenes to give me the best superbike in Australia, and although the competition is tough, I know I have what it takes to be there when it counts.

“It’s been two months since we raced at Morgan Park, and so we took the opportunity to race a state round at Phillip Island where Troy and I battled it out, which was a lot of fun to be honest. I love racing and I’m enjoying racing the Panigale FE, so I can’t wait to get on track Friday.”

The chase for the ABSK crown currently sees the top six riders separated by just 27 points.

Newly-crowned champion Waters injured in lead up to supercross

Newly-crowned champion Waters injured in lead up to supercross

DPH Motorsport Husqvarna rider sustains hand injuries at Queensland event.

Image: Supplied.

Newly-crowned Pirelli MX Nationals MX1 champion Todd Waters is recovering from multiple hand injuries sustained at last weekend’s Day in the Dirt event, which will sideline him for at least the next three weeks in the lead up to the Australian Supercross Championship opener.

Waters sustained a fracture to the fifth metacarpal in his left hand, while also fracturing the end of his right thumb in a crash at the Queensland-based event.

“I had a crash at Day in the Dirt – I just came up over a jump and my back end slid out on the up-ramp and I landed sideways,” Waters explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “Instead of high-siding, it pounded me into the ground – it capitulated me straight down.

“I put my arm out to roll, and it broke my left M5 which is the metacarpal bone in your hand that runs up to your little finger, and I broke the end of my right thumb off. They’re not big injuries and it’s pretty straightforward – they’re fractured obviously, but hopefully in three weeks the bones are mended and I can get back to riding heading into supercross.”

The DPH Motorsport Husqvarna rider managed to lodge a number of outings on a supercross track prior to the weekend, however he was due to visit Melbourne to commence pre-season testing this week. While acknowledging his preparation for the supercross series, which kicks off on 12 October, has been hindered, Waters is still confident of making the most the time he has available.

“I had a couple of rides on the supercross track, just feeling out the suspension,” he added. “I was planned to race Day in the Dirt and then head down to Melbourne to get testing, but that’s how it goes. Overall, I’m pretty confident in Kroozetune – I think we’re on target with our bikes, so heading into supercross I’m confident with the bike.

“Obviously it’s not the pre-season I would’ve liked – I believe in hard work and that’s what I strive for, so missing out on that is devastating, but in saying that, I’m sitting on the cycle bike right now putting in the work. I won’t be able to get on the track anytime soon, but I should be able to get a couple of weeks in before round one in Brisbane.”

Brisbane Entertainment Centre will host the season-opener this October, where a unique double-header format will be introduced.

Change of approach declares Bautista ahead of Portimao

Spaniard aiming to conserve injured shoulder throughout Friday practice.

Aruba.it Racing – Ducati’s Alvaro Bautista has declared he’ll need to change his approach this weekend as he endeavours to conserve his ongoing shoulder injury at Portimao’s 10th round of the 2019 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) in Portugal.

The Spaniard suffered the injury prior to WorldSBK heading into its European summer break, however it continued to hinder him while testing at the venue two weeks ago.

Bautista is confident the two tests at the circuit this year will enable him to find a suitable set-up while also resting his shoulder throughout Friday’s practice sessions.

“The two days of testing we did here last week were very useful, even though I preferred to rest my shoulder on the second day because it was the first time I had been back on the bike since my injury at Laguna Seca,” Bautista explained.

“I’ve had a few more days to recover, but during this weekend we might have to change our approach and try and rest the shoulder on Friday to be in a position to tackle the races in the best possible condition.

“Luckily, the two tests I’ve done at this circuit between January and now will be a great help, we have some markers, I know the track better and as a result it will all be a bit easier.”

The factory Ducati squad confirmed the former MotoGP rider will depart the squad at the end of the season, making way for British ace Scott Redding.

Established direction excites Rea ahead of Portimao WorldSBK

World championship returns from mid-season break this weekend.

Four-time reigning champion Jonathan Rea is eager to hit the track this weekend as the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) returns from a mid-season break at Portimao, the Kawasaki Racing Team ace already establishing a set-up direction after recently testing at the venue.

Rea, who’s anticipating a significant turnout of Irish fans at the Portuguese circuit, gained valuable data throughout two days of testing at Portimao last month, which he believes will put him on the front-foot come Friday’s practice.

“I am really excited to get back into racing again,” said Rea. “It has been such a long time since the last WorldSBK races and I can’t wait for the Portimao weekend. I love the track and after the tests we have a clear direction of the base settings that we will start with on the Ninja ZX-10RR.

“We will work step-by-step through Friday, trying to get a race package, and then focus on our qualifying to make sure we have a good race. I am going to have a lot of travelling support over from Northern Ireland and I cannot wait to get back to business. That race weekend feeling is something I really enjoy, together with all my team.”

The Irishman currently leads Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) by 81 points in the championship rankings.

Youthful Australian Joel Kelso will make his debut in the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship (WorldSSP300) at Portimao in Portugal this weekend after scoring a fill-in ride at Nutec – RT Motorsports by SKM – Kawasaki.

Kelso, who currently races for the Leopard Racing Team in the Campionato Italiano Velocita (CIV) Moto3 series, will fill in for regular Dorren Loureiro, the South African unable to compete due to family circumstances.

“I’m really excited for this opportunity to race in the world supersport 300 championship,” said Kelso. “I can’t thank Rob [Vennegoor] enough for giving me a go. I understand this weekend will be difficult because I have never ridden a Ninja 400 and never ridden at Portimao.

“However, the Nutec – RT Motorsports by SKM – Kawasaki is a very professional team which will no doubt supply me a great bike to race on. So, all I have to do is work out which way the track goes and give it my best shot and we’ll see where we end up at the end of each day.”

The team currently fields fellow Australian Tom Bramich alongside Dino Iozzo and Nick Kalinin.
