Australian Jason O’Halloran has cemented his future in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship (BSB) by signing a contract extension with McAms Yamaha for the 2020 season.

O’Halloran displayed incredible form at the beginning of the year, however much of his 2019 campaign has been hindered by a shoulder injury, which currently sees him ranked 10th in the championship standings.

The number 22 will once again be joined by Tarran Mackenzie, with the duo set to pilot the all-new 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1 in the new season.

“I’m really happy to stay with the team again for next year,” said O’Halloran. “This season hasn’t panned out how I wanted it to given we’ve had two separate injuries, one at the start of the year and now the shoulder. It’s been frustrating as it’s the first year where I feel the potential of the bike and myself hasn’t been maximised.

“From a positive point of view that means there’s more to come, especially as I’m really enjoying riding the Yamaha and even though I’m struggling with my shoulder, the results are still encouraging. I’ve a lot of time for Steve and the team so I’m glad to be staying on and with a new R1 on the way hopefully there’s another step for us to take in 2020.

“The focus for me now is to get fit and healthy for 2020 and then we can learn from our mistakes, put them into practice and have a stronger year with the new bike.”

The next stop of the current BSB season is scheduled for 20-22 September at Assen in the Netherlands.

Jeffrey Herlings’ season-first victory at the MXGP of Turkey last weekend has made him a GP winner for the 10th consecutive year in the world championship, extending his overall win tally in both the MX2 and MXGP categories to 85.

The multi-time world champion’s year has been riddled with injury, the Dutchman managing just four rounds this season as one remains this weekend at Shanghai in China.

“I’ve won a GP every year since 2010 and that’s 10 seasons now for KTM and 85 together,” Herlings explained. “It has been a bumpy ride this year but I want to thank all the Red Bull KTM crew and all my sponsors. It has been a rollercoaster with a lot of downs but at least we are trying to finish the year on a high note.

“I wanted to win here with a 1-1 and found the perfect place to pass Glenn and make it happen. Our goal is to be on the podium again for the last round.”

Following this weekend’s season finale, the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing ace will represent the Netherlands on home soil at Assen’s 2019 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN), scheduled for 28-29 September.

The BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team has extended its contract with Tom Sykes that will see him through the 2020 season in the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Sykes, who recorded 13-7-9 scorecard at Portimao’s 10th round on the weekend, has earned three podiums in his first season aboard the new BMW S 1000 RR, while next year’s he’s set to be joined by Eugene Laverty.

“I’m very excited and proud to be continuing into the 2020 season with the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team,” said Sykes. “After such a successful year so far with the all-new BMW S 1000 RR, which is still very early in its development gives me great motivation moving forward.

“I really enjoy the development part and we are certainly moving in a strong way. Of course, with the support from the whole of the team and the prestigious BMW brand my expectations for the 2020 season will certainly move higher and back to where I feel most natural.”

Team principal Shaun Muir added: “As expected we have taken the option in Tom’s contract and extended it for a further year, this is good for our continuity and for the development for the BMW S 1000 RR. We hope that we can we progress further up the grid and fight for regular podium finishes in 2020.”

Sykes currently sits eighth in the championship standings as three rounds remain in the current season.

Severe food poisoning sidelines Kjer Olsen at MXGP of Turkey

A severe bout of food poisoning is what forced Thomas Kjer Olson to withdraw from the MXGP of Turkey last weekend, the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing ace still securing runner-up honours in the MX2 World Championship.

Kjer Olsen came down with the illness on Friday before electing to complete a lap of the qualification race in order to make himself eligible for Sunday’s pair of motos, however his condition didn’t improve in time and he ultimately sat out the day’s racing.

“It’s been a very tough weekend for me,” said Kjer Olsen. “Without giving too many details I was extremely ill all Friday night, also with a very high temperature. I knew that if I completed one-lap of my qualifying race I could, if I felt okay, try and race on Sunday, which is what I did.

“I gave my all in the first moto today, but I just had no power in my muscles. The track was fast and it was just too risky to continue. It’s really disappointing but I hope I can recover and be ready to finish the season with strong results in China.”

The MXGP World Championship wraps up in Shangai, China, this weekend. Kjer Olsen will also represent Denmark at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) on 28-29 September at Assen in the Netherlands.

Staring satisfied to exit Winton with limited damage to title campaign

Kawasaki pilot sixth overall at round five of ASBK.

Kawasaki BCperformance’s Bryan Staring always anticipated Winton’s fifth round to be one his most challenging stops of the 2019 Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), the Western Australian thankful to exit the Victorian venue with minimal damage to his title campaign.

The former champion qualified in P8 before piecing together a 7-4 scorecard for sixth overall, losing just 11 points on leader Mike Jones (DesmoSport Ducati) in the standings, with the advantage now stretched to 19 as the series heads into a pair of strong and favoured circuits of Staring’s.

“This weekend was definitely about damage limitation with two finishes today,” Staring commented. “The first one was seventh, which wasn’t too bad, and race two with fourth position, we couldn’t have hoped to finish that high based on how things were looking beforehand.

“I’m very happy with that and I’m happy to come out of Winton with points on the board and without losing too many points in the championship. I’m very happy to get to the final two circuits of the year, which I’m very much looking forward to.”

The ASBK now heads to Phillip Island for the second time this season on 4-6 October, marking the penultimate stop on the calendar.

SRT to field factory Yamaha at 8 Hours of Sepang

SRT to field factory Yamaha at 8 Hours of Sepang

Morbidelli, van der Mark and Syahrin make up three-rider squad.

Sepang Racing Team (SRT) will field a factory Yamaha YZF-R1 at the 8 Hours of Sepang for round two of the 2019/2020 FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC), where both current MotoGP and WorlSBK riders will make up the three-rider squad at the 14 December event.

The team, who will have technical support from endurance racing specialist YART Yamaha, has drafted in Petronas SRT Yamaha’s Franco Morbidelli and Pata Yamaha’s Michael van der Mark, as well out of contract Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider Hafizh Syahrin.

“I’m curious to see how an endurance race format suits me, and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Morbidelli. “It’s something different, it’s nice, and when Razlan asked me to do it I thought: Sure, why not? The combination of Yamaha and Sepang Racing Team means it should be a strong package, and it’ll be good to race with a production bike again.

“Riding bikes is always good for staying in shape, so it’s nice to be able to race in December. I’ve trained with a YZF-R1 before so I’ve got an idea of what to expect, but I’m sure the endurance superbike will be very different. I might make the most of the trip and use it to enjoy a holiday in Malaysia as well.”

Van der Mark added: “When I first saw there would be an EWC round at Sepang in December I knew it would be cool to race it so I’m really proud that the team asked me – plus how can you say no to such a great team and race at their home track? Sepang is hot and humid and it will be really hard work – but that’s also the part of the challenge of endurance racing and I really enjoy it.

“I will do everything to help the team with the bit of endurance experience I have because we want to fight for the victory! We’ve got a really strong squad but we have to be smart and consistent, because for sure our goal will be to win the team’s home race!”

Syahrin, whose future beyond this season is yet to be determined, is eager to take part in the inaugural event in his home country.

“I’m really looking forward to taking part in the first EWC race in Malaysia,” Syahrin commented. “It’s not my first endurance race as I’ve ridden at the Suzuka 8 Hours before, but it’ll be very different riding in front of our home fans! It’s a really good opportunity for me to test my physical endurance because it’ll be a very long and hot race, and the most important thing will be how we work as a team.

“We’ll try our best to do a good job, but we’ve got a great team and some very strong team-mates. I’m really excited to share a bike with Franky and Michael, because they’re good riders and Michael has a lot of experience with the Yamaha. I can’t wait to get going!”

The 8 Hours of Sepang will be held as part of a car and bike double-header event in Malaysia, with the round acting as a qualifier for the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hours in Japan.

Roberts rules out supercross amid return to riding

Roberts rules out supercross amid return to riding

Raceline KTM Thor contender cleared to race following serious head injury.

Jy Roberts has ruled out contesting this year’s Australian Supercross Championship as he recently returned riding following a serious head injury sustained in April.

The former Pirelli MX Nationals MX2 points leader was practicing in New South Wales when he suffered a serious accident five months ago, resulting in a head injury that saw him spend eight days in a self-induced coma.

He has since made a remarkable recovery that has stunned specialists, receiving a medical clearance last month to resume riding and racing.

“I’ve been cleared to race, but I think it’s a bit silly to come back straight into supercross, it’s hard enough when you’ve done a full season of motocross and you’re fit as,” Roberts explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “You have to be on the top of your game, so it would be silly to come back racing supercross after such a severe injury.

“I’m definitely doing the MX Nationals and supercross next year if I don’t get injured again – the plan is to race next year, for sure. I’ve only just hopped back on the bike in the last couple of weeks, I haven’t been doing too much – I’ve just been easing backing into it. I haven’t been doing motos, just going back to basics at the moment.

“I had my first race on the weekend out at Dubbo, it was charity race and I just had some fun – I won one race and got a couple of seconds.”

The Raceline KTM Thor rider won the opening round of the MX Nationals in the MX2 category at Appin before finishing third at Wonthaggi, the last event prior to his accident.

Bautista ‘didn’t have anything left’ in Portimao victory

Spaniard fends off Rea in thrilling race two victory at the Portuguese round.

Alvaro Bautista admits he ‘didn’t have anything left’ in his slender 0.111s victory over Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) in race two at Portimao’s 10th round of the 2019 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK), which saw the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati rider return to the winners circle for the first time since round seven in July.

The Spaniard, who recorded a 4-2 scorecard in the opening encounter and Superpole race, put on an incredible charge in race two despite still dealing with a shoulder injury, where he managed to fend off four-time champion Rea on the final lap to claim victory.

“It has been a very tough weekend for me, especially physically because my shoulder is still not at 100 percent,” said Bautista. “I felt worse this morning after yesterday’s race so I tried to start well in the Superpole Race. Unfortunately, I lost a lot of positions and used up most of my energy, but I finished second which meant that I could start from the front row in race two.

“In the afternoon I again made a bad start, lifting the front of the bike up and losing some positions but I was still in the leading group so was not too worried. Mid-race I felt my pace was stronger so I decided to go for the lead and push hard until the end.

“I could manage the advantage but in the last two laps I felt every drop of energy leave me, luckily it was the last lap because I didn’t have anything left. It was my first time here in Portimão and I’m happy to get a win again after more than two months.”

The WorldSBK rookie still maintains second in the standings, 91 points behind Rea as the series heads to Magny-Cours in France on 27-29 September.

Jonass surging into late season form with back-to-back podiums

MXGP rookie third overall at Turkey’s penultimate round.

MXGP World Championship rookie Pauls Jonass has surged into late season form, the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider scoring his second-consecutive podium at Turkey’s penultimate round on Sunday.

Jonass, who started the season on the back foot after coming off a knee injury, has continued to climb through the order in the later stages of series, lodging a 2-5 scorecard at the Afyonkarahisar venue last weekend for third overall.

“It’s been a really good GP, but it didn’t start the best way,” Jonass admitted. “I had to work really hard to come back from my start crash in my qualifying race on Saturday, but it also gave me some good confidence coming into today’s motos as I knew I had good speed and I also liked the track.

“Getting the holeshot in the first moto today was awesome – I’ve been working hard on my starts and to get a first MXGP holeshot is really positive. I felt good the whole race. After Herlings passed me I rode well and, yeah, second place was great. The second race was also good – a good start but then I made a few small mistakes and dropped a few positions.

“I kept a good pace and managed to move into a position to get on the overall podium, which is a great way to finish the GP. I’m looking forward to China now.”

The 2017 MX2 World Champion has lifted himself to sixth in the championship rankings with just one to go, scheduled to take place at Shanghai in China this weekend.

Decision to declare race two ‘didn’t make sense’ according to Herfoss

Decision to declare race two ‘didn’t make sense’ according to Herfoss

Defending champion third overall in drama-packed Winton ASBK encounter.

Image: Foremost Media.

Reigning champion Troy Herfoss believes race two shouldn’t have been called off yesterday afternoon at Winton’s fifth round of the 2019 Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), the Penrite Honda Racing rider stating the decision to abort the outing that had already been declared wet ‘didn’t make sense’.

Race two was initially reduced to 10 laps after two restarts due incidents at turn two – the first claiming Mark Chiodo (Penrite Honda Racing) in a nasty high-side that also saw Kyle Buckley (Kawasaki BCperformance) crash heavily, while the restart saw Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team) and Lachlan Epis (Kawasaki) crash separately at the same turn.

Officials declared a wet race upon the second restart, although the field of riders remained on slicks. Worsening conditions just four laps in prompted the encounter to be called off completely, just as Herfoss passed both Mike Jones (DesmoSport Ducati) and Wayne Maxwell (Team Suzuki Ecstar Australia) for the lead.

However, only positions held on the previous lap counted towards the race result with just half points paying, crediting Jones the win over Maxwell and Herfoss, which added to the New South Welshman’s frustration.

“It was a good race day, although obviously starting from 12th it was difficult to move forward,” Herfoss explained. “The first race I had the pace to run with the front guys, but I think third place was our best result anyway. In race two there was a lot of carnage – they declared the race wet and then it rained and they called it off – it didn’t make sense, so I’m pretty disappointed about that.

“I understand the safety side of things because we’re on slick tyres, but when it’s a wet race, you’ve got a choice to run wet tyres or dry tyres, so to me, there was no reason to stop.

“To be fair, the next race was dry anyway. When the red flag came out I was in the lead and my lap-time before that was almost my fastest of the weekend. I hope the guys that crashed are alright, but now we move on to Phillip Island.

Herfoss suffered two major setbacks on Saturday when he crashed heavily in both free practice and qualifying, forcing him to start from P12 on the grid. He put on a heroic performance to earn a pair of thirds for third overall. He’s currently ranked fourth in the championship standings.
