Active8 Yamaha Yamalube Racing’s Luke Styke has been crowned the E1 champion at Hedley’s 11th and final round of the 2019 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC), as champions Daniel Sanders (Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team) and Daniel Milner (KTM Enduro Racing Team) picked up class wins.

Sanders returned to the top spot in the unofficial outright classification, forcing Milner to accept second over Josh Green (Active8 Yamaha Yamalube Racing).

In the E3 division, Sanders, who won the title in South Australia two weeks ago, became undefeated in the category as he won ahead of Andy Wilksch (Motul Pirelli Sherco Racing Team) and Tom Mason (KTM). Jesse Lawton (Husqvarna) and Matt Murry (Kawasaki Castrol Off Road Team) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Milner also became undefeated in the E2 class after being crowned champion in yesterday’s penultimate round, comfortably defeating Green, followed by Stefan Granquist (Yamaha), Jeremy Carpentier (Yamaha MX Store Ballards Off-Road Team) and Matthew Phillips (KTM).

Styke emerged victorious to clinch the E1 title, edging out teammate Michael Driscoll (Active8 Yamaha Yamalube Racing) for the top spot. Lyndon Snodgrass (KTM Enduro Racing Team) was third ahead of Fraser Higlett (Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team) and Lachlan Allan (Kawasaki Castrol Off-Road Team).

In the Women’s category, Jessica Gardiner (Yamaha MX Store Ballards Off-Road Team) claimed a record fifth title, as Kyron Bacon (KTM) lifted the EJ title.

Vinales storms to MotoGP pole at Misano

Vinales storms to MotoGP pole at Misano

Australian Gardner qualifies fourth fastest in Moto2.

Maverick Vinales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) continued his phenomenal weekend at the Misano grand prix, taking his second pole position of the season and breaking some hearts at KTM as he knocked compatriot Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) off provisional P1 on his final flying lap.

Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) completes the front row, but the headlines don’t end there. Some drama erupted behind the three men in Q2 as Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) and Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) almost clashed at the final corner.

Before all that, it wasn’t the start to Q2 Espargaro would have been looking for as his RC16 stopped at the end of pitlane but, luckily, he was able to get away fairly sharpish with a bit of help from a mechanic. Meanwhile on track, Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) backed out of his first flying lap and Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) was the first to set a benchmark time.

Just after that though, his rookie teammate Quartararo would go and set the quickest lap of the weekend despite a mistake in sector one – the Frenchman slamming in a 1m32.686s to lead the way. Morbidelli responded to go just 0.024 off but Quartararo then improved to go over a tenth clear, with Marquez jumping up to third on his first quick lap soon thereafter.

Heading back into the pits, the top four of Quartararo, Morbidelli, Marquez and Vinales were split by just 0.2 seconds. Home hero Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) was sitting fifth ahead of Espargaro, with second in the championship Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) only 10th.

Vinales switched bikes quickly, in and out like a flash, and on his next flying lap took third off Marquez to make it an all-Yamaha front row with three minutes to go, but there was plenty yet to come.

Morbidelli was setting red sectors before a huge slide coming into the third split ruined his lap, but what about provisional pole man Quartararo? He had Espargaro for company on his final lap but the Frenchman ran onto the green at the fast Turn 11 and voided his lap, leaving him unable to improve.

Espargaro was still setting personal bests though, and as the KTM rider took the chequered flag it suddenly became apparent quite how stunning his lap was as he took provisional pole by 0.011s. The fairytale wouldn’t quite prove perfect, but the performance remains superb.

It wasn’t perfect for the Austrian factory because Viñales was coming. Red sector after red sector, one of the men who has been blisteringly fast all weekend crossed the line to go pole by nearly three tenths, and there were only two riders left to try and topple him: Marquez and Rossi.

Marquez, shadowing Rossi, was also on for pole. However, after overtaking the number 46 into turn 11, the Championship leader ran wide. And, as it turned out, Rossi had also already exceeded track limits. But it boiled up to a final corner almost-clash, with the Yamaha slicing up the inside of the Honda as the duo came close to touching at Turn 14. Neither improved and both were summoned to a hearing with the FIM MotoGP Stewards to discuss the incident but no further action was taken. Marquez will start fifth, Rossi seventh.

That was that and the front row of Viñales-Espargaro-Quartararo was decided, with Franco Morbidelli taking his best grid position since Mugello and Catalunya to head up the second row. He’s just ahead of Marquez, with Dovizioso forced to settle for sixth on home turf. The Italian has, however, been a lightning starter of late…

Joining Rossi on row three are the Suzuki duo of Alex Rins and Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar), with Johann Zarco (Red Bull KTM Factory) racing having been eighth fastest in qualifying but the Frenchman needing to serve his three-place grid penalty given at Silverstone.

Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) was P11 in qualifying but will start just ahead of Zarco, with Ducati test rider and wildcard Michele Pirro just behind the Frenchman on the grid in 12th.

Further back, some big hitters will be starting down the order: Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) will launch from P14, with the Ducatis of Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) and Danilo Petrucci (Ducati Team) starting from 16th and 17th respectively. In addition, Andrea Iannone (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) will miss the remainder of the weekend after hurting his shoulder in a crash.

Rookie Fabio Di Giannantonio (+Ego Speed Up) set a fantastic 1m37.481s in Moto2 Q2 to take his first career Moto2 pole position, beating some serious competition – championship leader Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) and second in the standings Augusto Fernandez (FlexBox HP 40) both line up next to him on the front row. Australian Remy Gardner (SAG Racing) was fourth fastest.

Tatsuki Suzuki took his first ever Moto3 pole position to put SIC58 Squadra Corse front and centre on their home turf at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, and he even did it via a trip through Q1. He’s joined on the front row by championship contenders Aron Canet (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team) in second, also via Q1, and home hero Tony Arbolino (VNE Snipers).

Home hero Matteo Ferrari (Trentino Gresini MotoE) claimed a magnificent maiden FIM Enel MotoE World Cup victory after a hugely dramatic race one, with the Italian holding off Hector Garzo (Tech 3 E-Racing) and Xavier Simeon (Avintia Esponsorama Racing) on the final lap to take the Cup standings lead. Australian Josh Hook (Octo Pramac MotoE) was 10th.

KTM Enduro Racing Team’s Daniel Milner has won the E2 title at Hedley’s 10th round of the 2019 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC), while Daniel Sanders (Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team) and Lyndon Snodgrass (KTM Enduro Racing Team) scored class wins.

It was Milner who reigned supreme in the unofficial outright classification, also joined in the top three by Sanders and Snodgrass.

In the E3 division, newly-crowned champion Sanders continued his dominance, claiming victory over Andy Wilksch (Motul Pirelli Sherco Racing Team) and Tom Mason (KTM), as Jesse Lawton (Husqvarna) and Matt Murry (Castrol Kawasaki Australia) completed the top five.

Milner also remained dominant in the E2 category to lift the crown, comfortably defeating Josh Green (Active8 Yamaha Yamalube Racing) and Jeremy Carpentier (Yamaha MX Store Ballards Off-Road Team), followed by Stefan Granquist (Yamaha) and Jonte Reynders (Motul Pirelli Sherco Racing Team).

Snodgrass kept his E3 title hopes alive by topping the category, however points leader Luke Styke (Active8 Yamaha Yamalube Racing) still holds a relatively comfortable advantage heading into tomorrow’s final after scoring P2. Fraser Higlett (Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team) was third ahead of Michael Driscoll (Active8 Yamaha Yamalube Racing) and Lachlan Allan (Kawasaki Castrol Off-Road Team)

Emelie Karlsson (Yamaha) and Mason Semmens (Davey Motorsports KTM) were victorious in the Women’s and EJ categories. Racing resumes tomorrow for the 11th and final round.

Vinales fastest in Friday MotoGP practice at Misano

Vinales fastest in Friday MotoGP practice at Misano

Australia’s Miller records 16th fastest time in Italy.

Image: Supplied.

Friday at the Misano grand prix belonged to Maverick Vinales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT), the duo split by just 0.057s on the combined timesheets, the two topped a session each as Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) ended the day in third and over three tenths down.

It was a sunny first day on the Riviera di Rimini, and it was pretty sunny for Yamaha too as the Iwata marque had all four bikes in the top five. Home hero Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) was just behind Marquez, with Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) in fifth to leave the number 93 the sole non-Yamaha in the top five.

After Quartararo kicked things off in FP1 to edge out the reigning champion, it was Marquez who was the early leader in FP2 as the championship leader got straight down to business, closing down the rookie’s FP1 advantage to just 0.018s on the combined timesheets to head the afternoon session by over four-tenths.

The likes of Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) had jumped into the overall top ten in the early stages of FP2, with Morbidelli and Rossi also improving on their FP1 times. The afternoon then went quiet in terms of personal best times, the riders getting some valuable work done on different tyres to see what their preference will be for Sunday’s race.

But with just over ten minutes remaining – and after a couple of close front-end moments – Quartararo was yet to improve his FP1 time and so was Vinales. The traditional FP2 time attack was forthcoming, however, and with eight minutes to go, we had plenty of movement.

Rossi moved into P3 overall on his first flying run on the soft rear, but teammate Viñales would move the goalposts at the top as a 1m32.775s saw the Spaniard leap over three tenths clear. Quartararo was on a personal best behind, but the rookie sensation wasn’t quite able to match Vinales’ time as the 20-year-old went a tenth off.

The Ducati Team riders had a quiet morning but both Danilo Petrucci and Andrea Dovizioso then found a way into the top ten., with Viñales looking like he had P1 in the bag as the flag dropped. Quartararo, however, was on a fast one. Personal best sectors were set by the Frenchman but at the line, it wasn’t quite enough as he ended the day 0.057s in arrears – barely anything splitting the two Yamahas.

Marquez failed to improve and stayed P3, with Rossi and Morbidelli completing the top five. Sixth was a headline in itself as Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) impressed in P6 in both FP1 and FP2, ending the day ahead of Ducati Team’s Michele Pirro. The Italian slipped from P4 in FP1 to P7 at the end of play after failing to go quicker in FP2, but the test rider remains the fastest Ducati on track so far.

Petrucci sits just behind him in P8, with Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) – P5 in FP1 – claiming P9 on Friday thanks to his morning time. Last year’s winner Dovizioso occupies the last provisional automatic Q2 place in P10 heading into Saturday – not an easy day for the man second in the championship.

It’s Silverstone winner Alex Rins and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) who just lost out on the top ten on Friday, but it’s just 0.6s that splits Dovi in P10 to Andrea Iannone (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) in P21. Australian Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) was 16th on the timesheets.

Augusto Fernandez (Flexbox HP 40) was fastest on Friday in the Moto2 category, but it wasn’t by much. The Spaniard, now second in the championship after his win at Silverstone, was just half a tenth ahead of the man he’s chasing in the standings, Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS), with rookie Fabio Di Giannantonio (+Ego Speed Up) flying the home flag in third on day one. Australian Remy Gardner (SAG Racing) was eighth fastest.

Albert Arenas (Sama Qatar Angel Nieto Team) topped the Moto3 timesheets in both FP1 and FP2 to prove the man to beat so far, with home hero Niccolo Antonelli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) next up on the overall timesheets. Gabriel Rodrigo (Kömmerling Gresini Moto3) completed the top three to impress as he comes back from injury, with the trio all setting their best laptimes in the morning.

Not since 2011 has Alex De Angelis (Octo Pramac MotoE) taken pole position in the MotoGP paddock, but the Sammarinese rider was a cut above his rivals in E-Pole at the Misano grand prix to take his first FIM Enel MotoE World Cup pole position.

It was a close duel for the top with Matteo Ferrari (Trentino Gresini MotoE), however, as the Italian was forced to settle for second by half a tenth. Xavier Simeon (Avintia Esponsorama Racing) took third to complete the front row. Australian Josh Hook (Octo Pramac MotoE) qualified in 12th.

Duffy to replace Evans on Team Australia MXoN squad

Duffy to replace Evans on Team Australia MXoN squad

MXD champion to pilot KTM 450 SX-F in Open category at Assen.

Image: Foremost Media.

Recently-crowned Pirelli MX Nationals MXD champion Regan Duffy will replace Mitch Evans (Team Honda 114 Motorsports) on Team Australia for the 2019 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) at Assen in the Netherlands this month.

Duffy, just 17 years of age, will pilot a Raceline KTM Thor 450 SX-F in the Open category, fulfilling the spot vacated by Evans, who’s been forced out of event with ‘ongoing medical concerns’.

Despite his youth, the Western Australian has adequate experience aboard the 450, beating CDR Yamaha Monster Energy duo Kirk Gibbs and Luke Clout, plus fellow MXoN team member Kyle Webster (Penrite Pirelli CRF Honda Racing), at this year’s Manjimup 15,000, while he’s won 13 from 14 motos in the MX1 category of the WA state-based championship.

Duffy boasts an exceptional skillset in the sand, which will prove beneficial in the man-made Assen sandpit circuit, while the chance to represent Australia at the prestigious race marks a greater opportunity for the Raceline rider, as a strong showing will strengthen his chances of earning a desired international ride in the future.

“It’s massive for and it’s always been a dream of mine,” Duffy explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “I’ve always watched the Des Nations and been in awe of all the countries coming together to do battle. To go over there and race the best guys in the world at 17 is just next level.

“I do all my training on the 450 – I literally ride my 450 all the time. I don’t really have any expectations – I’m going to give 100 percent and do the best that I can, but I don’t really know where I’ll be at. I think if I put in a good result, people will take notice of me – it’s a big event for me – it’s not just Des Nations, it’s my future.”

Duffy joins triple Australian champion Dean Ferris (Raceline Recover8 KTM) and Webster for the 28-29 September event. Dual Australian MX2 champion, Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna), withdrew his MXoN application last month, making himself unavailable for selection. The Queenslander has locked in an MX2 World Championship deal for next year.

Green targeting victory in Hedley’s AORC finals

Strong finish on the agenda for Active8 Yamaha Yamalube Racing rider.

Active8 Yamaha Yamalube Racing’s Josh Green is targeting his first E2 class victory of the season this weekend at Hedley’s final two rounds of the 2019 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) in Victoria.

The New South Welshman has fallen short to points leader Daniel Milner (KTM Enduro Racing Team) all season long, earn runner-up result in the nine rounds so far.

“While our season draws to a close, there is still plenty of motivation to keep riding and training,” said Green. “I want to finish the AORC off on a strong note and try to win a round or two before the year is out.

“And also with the ISDE just around the corner, it presents another opportunity to fine-tune everything in race conditions.I will give it my all and see how it goes.”

Green currently sits 27 points Milner in the E2 championship standings, where a win in Saturday’s 10th round will take the title down to Sunday’s finale.

Penrite Honda Racing uncovers international expansion plans

Penrite Honda Racing has uncovered plans to expand its efforts overseas, revealing three-time Australian supercross champion and recently-signed Team Honda HRC rider Justin Brayton will race the Montreal Supercross in Penrite colours this weekend in Canada.

Team owner Yarrive Konsky is understood to be assessing possible ongoing opportunities internationally, having spent considerable time in America over recent months.

“I have always wanted to explore overseas opportunities and Justin generously proposed a mutual venture,” Konksy explained. “Our primary partners were excited to get involved and this weekend will mark our first foray in international competition.”

Brayton, who races supercross-only, will return to Australia as he attempts to claim a fourth consecutive crown in the revamped series, which is set to take place over five rounds, visiting New Zealand for the S-X Open Auckland before the AUS-X Open Melbourne at Marvel Stadium.

It was announced today that the American will rejoin the factory Team Honda HRC outfit for the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship.

Brayton will join Brett Metcalfe and fellow American Chris Blose on the domestic Penrite Honda Racing for the Australian series, while an additional rider signing is still to be revealed. The Australian Supercross Championship launches on 12 October at Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

Vinales confident useful developments will assist at Misano

Monster Energy Yamaha rider targeting podium this weekend in Italy.

Spaniard Maverick Vinales is confident that useful developments made with his Monster Energy Yamaha YZR-M1 at the Misano test will assist in his challenge for a podium at the Italian venue this weekend.

Vinales is coming off a podium result at the British grand prix, which combined with a positive test last month, as offered the MotoGP contender a strong mindest leading into the 13th round.

“We‘ve had a two-week break again, but we have never stopped working during that time,” said Vinales. “We‘ve been preparing in order to come to Misano in a good physical and mental shape. We are very happy with the positive results of the last races and we have to remain focused to finish the season in a good position in the general classification.

“Being the first Yamaha is my goal, as always. The test in Misano was useful because we tried many things, not only for next year but also for this current season. The San Marino GP is a kind of home GP for Yamaha and we will have many fans supporting us here, so I can’t wait to get back aboard my M1 and fight for the podium, spurred on by the amazing atmosphere.”

Vinales is currently ranked a distant fifth in the MotoGP World Championship standings.

Team Honda HRC signs Brayton and Sexton in unique 2020 deal

Team Honda HRC signs Brayton and Sexton in unique 2020 deal

Sexton to make 450 switch for outdoors in multi-year deal.

Image: Supplied.

Team Honda HRC has signed Justin Brayton and Chase Sexton for the 2020 season in a unique deal that will see the latter remain with Geico Honda in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross 250SX series before stepping up to the premier class with the HRC squad for the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

Brayton has spent the last four years as a supercross-only rider, using the regular off-season to race the Australian Supercross Championship – a title he’s won three consecutive times and will attempt a fourth crown this year with Penrite Honda Racing.

The number 10 has been a member of the Smartop MotoConcepts Bullfrog Spas Honda over the last three seasons with the support of HRC, and will now return to the factory squad.

“I’m beyond excited to be riding for factory Honda in the 2020 supercross season,” said Brayton. “Riding with the team in 2012 was the achievement of a dream for me, and I had my best season so far that year. Now I feel like I’m living my dream all over again, just a little older and more experienced to be able to take full advantage of this opportunity.”

Sexton, the 2019 250SX East champion, has signed a multi-year agreement with Team Honda HRC that will see him through the 2023 season, although he will not defend his crown next year, and will instead race the 250SX West series with Geico Honda before his premier class graduation in the outdoors.

“I’m super excited to be joining Team Honda HRC,” Sexton commented. “Factory Honda is a team that I’ve wanted to ride for since I was a kid, so to have this opportunity is honestly a dream come true. I’m looking forward to starting this journey with them, and I think it will be a successful one.

“I think the CRF450R suits me because I’m a bigger guy and I ride it well. Still, 2020 is going to be a learning year for sure. I’m just getting my feet wet in the 450 class, and it will be good to have an outdoor series under my belt to get me ready for a full 17-round 2021 Supercross series.

“I’m also looking forward to being teammates with Ken. We’re pretty close friends and train together every day, so I think this will push us both and take us to the next level. You couldn’t ask for a better guy to have under the tent, with his speed and knowledge.”

It was confirmed in May that Ken Roczen will remain with Team Honda HRC through the 2022 season.
