Breakout WorldSBK victory for Razgatlioglu on Saturday in France

Breakout WorldSBK victory for Razgatlioglu on Saturday in France

WorldSSP pole position a career-first for Smith at Magny-Cours.

Despite a disappointing Tissot Superpole session, Toprak Razgatlioglu (Turkish Puccetti Racing) made WorldSBK history at the Pirelli French Round by becoming the first Turkish winner in the championship’s history.

Many-Cours produced one of the races of the WorldSBK season so far as five different riders lead at various stages, before Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team) crashed out of the lead three laps from home.

That seemingly handed victory to Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK), before a stunning final lap saw Razgatlioglu take the spoils, despite starting from the sixth row.

As the race got underway, Rea came under immediate pressure from Van der Mark with two almost colliding into the Adelaide hairpin on lap one. Their duel allowed Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) to storm through from sixth on the grid to second by the end of lap one.

Sykes’ progress continued on lap two as he used the corner speed of the BMW to overtake Rea at Estoril, although the leading group was growing and growing with Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) joining the action from 11th on the grid, while a remarkable early charge brought Razgatlioglu into play.

On lap three, Davies became the third different leader in as many laps but the Welshman’s challenge came to a dramatic end moments later with a crash into turn 15. Davies’ lost the front-end of his machine with second-placed Razgatlioglu fortunate to stay upright despite slight contact from the errant Ducati.

The chaos allowed Sykes a moment of breathing space but the BMW rider was quickly reeled in, losing the lead to Van der Mark on lap six. With the battle continuing to rage in the leading group, van der Mark was able to open up a slight advantage while Rea came under intense pressure.

Razgatlioglu was able to edge ahead, setting the fastest lap in the process, but Rea ultimately regained P2 from the Turkish rider shortly after half-distance, allowing him to give chase after Van der Mark, who was 1.2 seconds ahead.

Behind the leading trio, Loris Baz (Ten Kate Racing – Yamaha) had established himself in an excellent fourth with Sykes settling in fifth after an all-action start. Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team) was holding sixth but the Briton was coming under increasing pressure from Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati).

Leon Haslam (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) was also in the thick of the action but a highside at the final chicane eliminated him five laps from home. With clear track in front, Rea began his relentless chase of Van der Mark, wiping out his advantage heading into the closing stages.

With three laps remaining, the leading pair were together but Van der Mark’s hopes of a second victory of 2019 were extinguished when the front end of his Yamaha folded into the Adelaide hairpin, the pressure proving too much.

Rea seemed on course for a 12th victory of the season, beginning the final lap one second clear of Razgatlioglu but a stunning final lap from the Turkish rider brought him right into the tail of the Ulsterman entering the last sector.

Under braking for turn 15, Toprak dived up the inside with Rea keen to avoid a costly collision, opting to settle for second. The fight for the final podium spot also went down to the wire with Sykes rallying in the latter stages to overhaul Baz, securing BMW’s fourth podium of the season. Baz held on to fourth while Bautista recovered to fifth.

Lowes faded to finish a distant sixth while Leon Camier (Moriwaki Althea Honda Team) marked his return from injury with seventh, Honda’s best result of the 2019 season so far. Marco Melandri (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK) finished eighth, with Eugene Laverty (Team Goeleven) and Sandro Cortese (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK) completing the top 10.

After showing a preview of his potential on Friday afternoon, Kyle Smith (Team Pedercini Racing) proved to be in a class of his own in the wet, claiming his first-ever pole position in WorldSSP.

The championship battle looks set to play out from the second row after a fascinating Tissot Superpole session at Magny-Cours. Smith leads the front row ahead of Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) and Ayrton Badovini (Team Pedercini Racing).

The championship challengers went head-to-head in the dying seconds with Federico Caricasulo (Bardahl Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team) securing a narrow advantage over his teammate Randy Krummenacher, despite missing out on the front row for the first time this season. Caricasulo will line up fourth, with Krummenacher sixth.

In WorldSSP300, Scott Deroue (Kawasaki Motoport) took a much-needed pole position ahead of Ana Carrasco (Kawasaki Provec WorldSSP300) with points-leader Manuel Gonzalez (Kawasaki ParkinGO Team) set for a tough battle tomorrow from the fifth row, while Australian teammate Tom Edwards starts out of 22nd position.

Australia’s Webster lands top three result in MX2 qualification race.

Team Belgium has topped qualifying at Assen’s 2019 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) in the Netherlands, while a strong showing from Team Australia saw the squad earn P4 ahead of Sunday’s racing.

Hosting nation the Netherlands was second in qualifying ahead of a competitive Team USA, while defending champions Team France were seventh in the classification.

The MXGP class was the first to hit the track in Saturday’s qualification races, and it was Switzerland’s Jeremy Seewer (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) who broke away to claim victory with a 7.4s advantage over recently-crowned world champion Tim Gajser (Honda HRC), as Jeremy van Horebeek (Honda) locked out the podium.

Dual MX2 world champion Jorge Prado (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was fourth in his first-ever 450 outing, followed by home favourite Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing). Australia’s Dean Ferris (Raceline Recover8 KTM) finished a respectable 10th.

It was Team USA’s Justin Cooper who reigned supreme in the highly-competitive MX2 division, securing the top spot over Calvin Vlaanderen (Honda HRC), providing a confidence boost to the American team.

In a glowing performance, Australian Kyle Webster (Penrite Pirelli CRF Honda Racing) rounded out the podium in third, and was followed by Jago Geerts (Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha) and Alberto Forato (Husqvarna).

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass, of Latvia, stole a narrow victory in the Open class from Kevin Strijbos (JWR Yamaha), the Belgian finishing 1.147s of P1. Glenn Coldenhoff (Standing Construct KTM) was third, as Shaun Simpson (RFX KTM) and Harri Kullas (Honda).

After sitting inside the top three, 17-year-old Australian Regan Duffy (Raceline KTM Thor) recovered from a crash to finish an impressive sixth.

Van der Mark fastest in rain-affected Friday practice at Magny Cours

News 28 Sep 2019

Van der Mark fastest in rain-affected Friday practice at Magny Cours

Perolari tops the timesheets in WorldSSP category at the French round.

Image: Supplied.

The inclement weather continued to wreak havoc with the WorldSBK class as the second session at the French round began in torrential rain. As a result, the lap times were significantly slower as the riders searched for grip.

Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team) left it late to finish fastest in the morning session but the Dutchman deemed the conditions too wet for any meaningful running and chose to sit FP2 out.

In van der Mark’s absence, Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) proved the man to beat during FP2 but it wasn’t without a scare. Rounding the Estoril corner, the world champion suffered a huge moment as the rear of his Kawasaki stepped out.

The Ulsterman maintained control and went on to top the session ahead of former teammate Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), current team-mate Leon Haslam and surprise package Ryuichi Kiyonari (Moriwaki Althea Honda Team) in fourth, although all riders were slower than they had gone in FP1.

Overall, van der Mark closes free practice Friday as the fastest man as he looks to chase down his teammate Alex Lowes in the battle for third in the standings. Van der Mark has finished on the podium at Magny-Cours in each of the last three years and will fancy his chances of doing so again, whatever the weather. Lowes ended the day in eighth overall, and much like his team-mate, took a safety-first approach during the afternoon downpour.

Leading the Kawasaki challenge overall was Leon Haslam after a consistent day for the 36-year-old. Haslam was just two tenths shy of the outright fastest time before backing up his team-mate in the afternoon, showing that both Kawasaki riders will be competitive if the heavens open tomorrow.

Rea’s day underlined the exceptional pace the Ulsterman clearly possesses, although a crash during FP1, followed by his near-highside in FP2, prove that nothing is certain in the Superbike World Championship. Marco Melandri (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) earned the honour of top Independent rider with third spot, although four figured inside the top six as the heavy rain presented an opportunity for less fancied names.

Leandro Mercado (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) held onto fourth with home favourite Loris Baz (Ten Kate Racing – Yamaha) demonstrating his wet-weather credentials, finishing fifth in both sessions. Alessandro Delbianco (Althea Mie Racing Team) is another rider to watch if the weather takes a turn for the worse, with the Italian an impressive sixth today on the leading Honda.

With Rea and Lowes completing the combined top eight, Michael Ruben Rinaldi (BARNI Racing Team) ends Friday as the fastest Ducati rider, narrowly ahead of Eugene Laverty (Team Goeleven). Ducati’s championship hopes still rest on the shoulders of Alvaro Bautista (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati) and the Spaniard wound up in 13th, one spot ahead of teammate Chaz Davies with neither venturing out this afternoon.

Moriwaki Althea Honda Team is boosted this weekend by the return of Leon Camier and the Briton showed promising pace in both sessions, ending up 11th overall. By contrast, Sandro Cortese found the going tough with 19th in FP1, followed by a heavy fall at the Adelaide hairpin later in the day which left him with a left shoulder contusion, plus a left elbow contusion and abrasion. The German rider has been declared fit to continue though.

Corentin Perolari (GMT94 Yamaha) topped the WorldSSP category over Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) and Isaac Vinales (Kallio Racing), while the WorldSSP300 class saw Dion Otten (MTM Racing Team), Mika Perez (Carl Cox – RT Motorsports by SKM – Kawasaki), and Galang Hendra Pratama (Semakin Di Depan Biblion Motoxracing) complete the top three.

Australian Tom Edwards (Kawasaki ParkinGO Team) was 12th in the A group, while his compatriots didn’t make it out on track in the worsening conditions.

Paulin as prepared as possible for Team France MXoN title defence

Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha contender to sport the number one plate.

Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha’s Gautier Paulin is confident he’s as prepared as possible to assist Team France to a sixth-straight Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations crown this Sunday in the Netherlands.

The Frenchman, who will represent his country for the 11th time in his career, says he’ll be racing for the team this weekend as he dons the number one plate.

The French team has endured a tumultuous lead-up to the MXoN, first with Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) bowing out with injury before the federation excluded Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle over a logo dispute.

“I’m prepared for Assen,” Paulin stated. “I feel good, we have been working hard to prepare the bike and we have made some changes to the suspension and the team have been working hard to give me the best bike they can.

“We haven’t stopped since it’s the end of the World Championship season, we have kept pushing to be good in Assen in such tough sand conditions. This weekend is a unique event, we don’t just ride for ourselves, we ride for the team. We will do our best to be up front.”

Paulin will be joined by Maxime Renaux (Yamaha) and Jordi tixier (KTM) in the three-rider squad this weekend.

Team Australia applying no pressure on MXoN rookie Duffy

Raceline KTM Thor rider primed for Assen this weekend.

Recently-crowned Pirelli MX Nationals MXD champion Regan Duffy says there’s no additional pressure from Team Australia has he makes his Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) debut this weekend at just 17 years of age in the Open category.

The Raceline KTM Thor rider was drafted into the squad just two weeks ago following the withdrawal of MX2 World Championship regular Mitch Evans (Team Honda 114 Motorsports), the Queenslander currently recovering from a list of ongoing injuries sustained throughout the year.

Duffy, who was racing the Australian Junior Motocross Championship this time last year, dominated in the MXD category in 2019, and made a glowing performance at the Manjimup 15,000 aboard the 450, where he defeated a number of the country’s top premier class contenders.

“It’s going to be tough,” Duffy stated to MotoOnline.com.au. “From what I’ve heard, there are two jumps that you get a break on, and the rest is deep sand and getting drawn into the dirt. I like the long motos and I’ve always been pretty good with that, hopefully I can just keep my head and ride like I know how to.

“It’s going to be a good experience, and I’ve got no pressure or anything – the team knows I’m there filling the spot, so it’s not like they want me to go out and get a top five as Mitch probably would – it’s cool like that.”

The Western Australian will join three-time MX Nationals MX1 champion Dean Ferris (Raceline Recover8 KTM) and Kyle Webster (Penrite Pirelli CRF Honda Racing) in the green and gold at Assen in the Netherlands.

Davies optimistic with improved Ducati V4 R package

Aruba.it Racing – Ducati rider hopeful to maintain form this weekend in France.

Image: Supplied.

Chaz Davies says he’s feeling optimistic for the remainder of the 2019 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) after his recent surge in form is a result of an improved Ducati Panigale V4 R package.

The Aruba.it Racing – Ducati rider, who has signed on for 2020 with the outfit, struggled to come grips with the all-new machine at the beginning of the year, however has recently scored an array of podium finishes.

“I feel good for Magny Cours because the podium at Portimao has actually given me optimism for the rest of the season and I feel that it proves we have a pretty good package with the bike now,” Davies explained. “The French track has been quite kind to me in the past so we’ll try and get some good results there.

“I’m not really looking for any particular place in the championship now – of course it’s nice to be in the hunt for the top 3 but my goal is just to be competitive on the remaining circuits until the end of the year.”

The WorldSBK series resumes this weekend at Magny-Cours in France for round 11 of the series.

Red Bull KTM signs Hofer for 2020 MX2 World Championship

News 27 Sep 2019

Red Bull KTM signs Hofer for 2020 MX2 World Championship

Austrian manufacturer completes its line-up for next season.

Image: Supplied.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing has signed 17-year-old Rene Hofer for the 2020 MX2 World Championship, as dual world champion Jorge Prado graduates to the premier class.

The Austrian, who will race alongside Tom Vialle next year, impressed with three wildcard MX2 appearances in 2019 in what was his first full year of competition aboard the KTM 250 SX-F, while he was ranked fourth in his maiden EMX250 campaign.

“I’m super excited,” Hofer stated. “We’ve really worked for this over the last couple of years and my dreams are coming true right now. We were not sure if it would happen for 2020 but I showed some good speed in the second half of the season and also that I could compete in good positions in MX2.

“I felt confident in the class from the very first time, even if the weekend routine is pretty different from EMX. I’m so grateful to be able to have the chance to ride for the most successful team in the GP paddock and to have the best racing people around me as well as being able to learn from Tom.

“I’ve trained with him a few times now and he’s a really nice guy. He had an unbelievable rookie season and I think we can put in some solid preparation work over the winter to be ready for 2020. I turn 18 next year and I know I am ready for this step. For sure the result in Imola was very good but I will be hungry for more and I will bring in the very best effort from my side.

“I cannot forget to thank all the people who have helped me reach this stage of my career and who have helped shape me as a rider and as a human. I cannot wait to start work for 2020 but first I need to focus on this weekend!”

KTM’s vice president of off-road Robert Jonas added: “Rene has quickly moved up through the levels of the sport and he made sure that it was hard to ignore his progress in 2019 and his first with the 250 SX-F. After two seasons in the 125s and just one in EMX250 he was already pushing for a grand prix opportunity and showed us what he can do.

“We really like the mentality and the determination of this kid and we’re proud to be able to bring another rookie into our factory team for 2020. He’s Austrian and some might think this would be an advantage but it also comes with pressure, and we wanted to make sure that Rene would be able to handle this chance.

“I can remember this situation from my own experience and we have no doubts about Rene. 2020 will be a learning year but, together with Tom, it means we have exciting and youthful talent behind an amazing strong MXGP line-up.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing will field Prado alongside multi-time world champions Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings in MXGP next year.
