A difficult start to his SX2 title defence in Brisbane has Jay Wilson embracing the return of a traditional format and full-size circuit at Port Adelaide’s second round of the Australian Supercross Championship this weekend.

The Yamalube Yamaha Racing ace got caught up in the close and aggressive nature of indoor racing at Brisbane Entertainment Centre, going down in turn one during the first main, recovering for seventh. He was fourth in race two, granting him fifth for the night.

“Fifth isn’t ideal, but I’m in the mix and left round one healthy and I’m determined to do better,” said Wilson. “I didn’t get the middle rhythm section as good as I would have liked all night and it proved a little costly. It was the one section of the track where I let myself down but I will be better next weekend.

“My bike is good and the team were great again so we will take the positives from the weekend, work on a few things and come out swinging in Adelaide where we are back to a more traditional format of racing with a 15-lap main event.”

Port Adelaide, the same venue that delivered one of the strongest track layouts in 2018, will offer up a traditional 15-lap main event for the SX2 category this Saturday night.

Fabio Quartararo says there’s no rush to claim the rookie of the year title as he enters the Japanese grand prix as a mathematical chance of earning the honour.

The Petronas SRT Yamaha rider has starred in his debut season in the MotoGP World Championship, being a regular podium challenger throughout the 15 rounds so far.

The Frenchman is confident of challenging for a top three at Motegi this Sunday, the Yamaha pilot coming off a thrilling battle with recently-crowned champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) in Thailand.

“We’ll keep working in the same way as we have in the past few weeks, and try to challenge for a good position and to aim for the podium,” Quartararo explained. “We’re also obviously keeping an eye on the rookie of the year title with Motegi being the first place where it can be won – but there’s no rush on it either!

“We’ve seen that Marc [Marquez] has been really fast at Motegi in the past, but it’s also a circuit where I was very strong last year, and for sure it’s going to feel great to be able to ride a MotoGP bike there.”

Quartararo is currently ranked seventh in the championship standings with four rounds remaining on the calendar.

Current Monster Energy AMA Supercross champion Cooper Webb has pulled out of this weekend’s Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider released a statement confirming his withdrawal, explaining a lack of seat time since returning from a knee injury sustained in the Lucas Oil Pro AMA Motocross Championship is the reason he’ll sit on the sidelines this Saturday night.

“I will not be racing MEC this weekend,” Webb commented. “With only three days of riding on the 450 so far, KTM and I decided it would be best to skip this race and focus on preparation and testing for 2020 SX.”

Webb, who raced Red Bull Straight Rhythm on a two-stroke earlier this month, is the second high-profile rider to withdraw from the Monster Energy Cup after 2018 supercross champion Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Racing) elected to miss the event.

Webb’s teammate Marvin Musquin also confirmed he won’t on the start line, however he wasn’t initially slated to contest the one-off race.

HRC extends contract with LCR Honda’s Nakagami for 2020

Japanese rider signs on ahead of home grand prix at Motegi.

Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) has extended Takaaki Nakagami’s contract for the 2020 MotoGP World Championship, where the Japanese contender will continue to ride under LCR Honda.

Now in his second year aboard the RC213V, Nakagami has demonstrated consistent improvements in his riding and results in the premier class throughout 2019 with eight top 10 finishes and a best result of fifth at Mugello.

After his home race in Motegi, Nakagami will undergo an operation on his right shoulder to resolve an injury that has troubled him throughout the season.

The nature of the operation warrants an extensive recovery period, forcing him to prematurely end his 2019 season. By performing the operation now, Nakagami is aiming to be fully fit for the first test of the 2020 season in Sepang.

“First of all I am delighted to stay with Honda and the LCR team,” said Nakagami. “I have been able to improve a lot this year and Honda have shown me great support and given me a very strong package. I am sure together we can continue this in 2020. About the injury, after the crash I had in Assen I found myself in some pain and lacking a bit of strength in my shoulder.

“I went to the doctor to fully understand the situation and while I have been able to ride with the injury, it has not been ideal so we made the difficult decision alongside Honda and the LCR Team to have this operation now.”

Johann Zarco, who was benched by Red Bull KTM Factory Racing last month, has been linked as a possible replacement for Nakagami following the Japanese grand prix.

Honda transition for Reed ahead of Monster Energy Cup

Honda transition for Reed ahead of Monster Energy Cup

Australian likely to pilot CRF450R at S-X Open Auckland and AUS-X Open Melbourne.

Australian fan-favourite Chad Reed will transition to a privateer Honda CRF450R this weekend at the Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas, according to his wife Ellie.

The two-time Monster Energy AMA Supercross champion’s partner briefly shared details in a social media post, revealing the number 22’s ride for Saturday’s event.

Reed, who was a member of the JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing squad this season, indicated last month that the manufacturer he rides at the Monster Energy Cup will likely be his set-up for an array of off-season races, including Paris Supercross, S-X Open Auckland and AUS-X Open Melbourne.

While Reed was initially tipped to remain at JGRMX, it’s understood that potential deal deteriorated since the supercross season concluded. The squad recently halted testing as it continues to work through the final year of its contract with Suzuki, however they’ve resumed riding with only Alex Martin signed for 2020 at this stage.

The New South Welshman last raced a Honda in 2013, where he raced a factory-supported CRF450R under his own TwoTwo Motorsports outfit.

Webster admits MXoN hindered AUS Supercross preparations

Webster admits MXoN hindered AUS Supercross preparations

Western Australian scores 10th in Queensland’s opening round.

Image: Foremost Media.

Kyle Webster admits representing Team Australia at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) last month hindered his preparations for the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship, the SX2 challenger earning 10th at Brisbane’s season-opener.

The Western Australian received the call-up for MXoN in just his initial days of being on a supercross track this season, prompting him to put testing on hold in favour of preparing for the Assen event.

Despite arriving home days out of Brisbane’s first round, the Penrite Pirelli CRF Honda Racing rider still lined up for the opening stop of the series, transferring directly to the main events, where he posted a DNF-10 scorecard.

“The whole MXoN experience was amazing, but it did mean my build up for the supercross championship was limited and I only had a few days of supercross training before we lined up in Brisbane,” Webster explained.

“I really struggled with how small and tight track the track was at Brisbane, so now we’ll just move on and I’m excited to put in a solid week of riding, and I cannot wait for the next round at Adelaide.”

The Australian Supercross Championship visit Port Adelaide this Saturday for round two of the series.

Argentina podium a positive end to controversial round for Davies

Argentina podium a positive end to controversial round for Davies

British contender earns second in the final encounter.

Scoring a podium in race two was a positive end to Argentina’s 12th round of the 2019 FIM Motul Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) for Chaz Davies, who was one of six riders that sat out the opening encounter with safety concerns over track conditions.

The Aruba.it Racing – Ducati contender recorded a 4-2 scorecard, lifting the British ace’s spirits after being disappointed by Saturday’s controversy.

“It was a really good way to finish the weekend,” said Davies. “This morning in the Superpole race I was able to finish in fourth place which put me on the second row of the grid for race two. Unfortunately, in the second race I made a bad start and I was swamped by several riders at the first corner.

“I felt comfortable enough however and began to pick my way through the pack. When I got up to second place the gap to Jonathan was almost three seconds, and although I closed it down a bit, it was impossible to get any closer to him. Pity because I think if I had been there from the beginning, it might have been a nice race.

“However, we were competitive on another track, that’s four or five now where we’ve been near or on the podium. A big thanks to the team for their work but also for standing by me yesterday. Hopefully now we can go to Qatar and continue the momentum to finish the season strong.”

Davies sits seventh in the championship standings ahead of Qatar season-finale on 26 October.
