JGRMX team set to cease operations prior to 2021 season

Suzuki releases official statement following JGRMX team closure.

Image: Supplied.

JGRMX has split with Suzuki and appears certain to cease its operations prior to the 2021 season, ending a 13-year stint in operating its professional motocross and supercross team, still unable to fund the program into next year.

First hinted by PulpMX on Twitter, rumors have been widespread that the North Carolina-based team would be closing its doors and a post on the JGRMX social media accounts today has all but confirmed the news.

A sombre video has been posted to thank the fans of JGRMX following over a decade in the sport, beginning as a Yamaha-equipped program in 2008 and then transferring to run Suzuki machinery in 2017 and then took over the factory team from 2018. No official press release has been distributed by JGRMX at this point.

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) first entered the sport under the leadership of Coy Gibbs, expanding upon its iconic NASCAR organisation and immediately hiring Jeremy Albrecht in a team management position. Albrecht has led the effort since.

A wide range of top-level riders have been part of the JGRMX team through the years, including James Stewart, Chad Reed, Justin Barcia, Davi Millsaps, Justin Brayton, Weston Peick, Josh Grant, Justin Hill, Malcolm Stewart and more.

This year saw JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki field Joey Savatgy and Fredrik Noren aboard the RM-Z450, as well as Alex Martin and Jimmy Decotis – who only completed a partial season – riding the RM-Z250. An injury-affected year saw Broc Tickle join the team in the later stages of 450SX, while Isaac Teasdale made a number of guest appearances outdoors.

In recent years, each off-season it has been in question whether JGRMX would have the funding to continue in the following season, however despite promise that a new title sponsor would be secured for 2021, it now looks certain that the team has made the decision to close altogether.

“Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. is honored to have worked with a premier racing partner like Joe Gibbs Racing,” commented Chris Wheeler, Suzuki’s MX support manager. “This partnership produced solid success and many strong friendships over the past several seasons and we would like to thank the entire team at JGRMX for their hard work, passion and dedication to Suzuki racing.”

It’s another severe blow for the sport just two months out from the opening round of 2021 Monster Energy Supercross on 16 January in Houston, with JGRMX to follow the Factory Connection-owned Geico Honda team in exiting competition. There has been no confirmation what Savatgy, Noren or Martin will be doing next year.

Monster Energy Yamaha confirms Coldenhoff MXGP signing

Top-level Dutchman trading GasGas for YZ450FM from 2021 season.

The long-anticipated signing of Glenn Coldenhoff to Monster Energy Yamaha has been made official, departing GasGas to ride the factory YZ450FM in the MXGP World Championship from 2021.

Coldenhoff, 29, will partner Jeremy Seewer and rookie Ben Watson in the three-rider line-up next season, replacing the retiring Gautier Paulin and Arnaud Tonus in the premier class team.

“I feel very welcomed by the whole Yamaha family,” Coldenhoff said. “From the first moments we met, I felt there was a very motivated and ambitious team awaiting me. I am really thankful for the opportunity. I strongly believe that I can still make progress, win races and can fight for the championship – I know Yamaha will give me everything to achieve these goals.”

Currently recovering from a neck injury sustained at Lommel, Coldenhoff has indicated that his rehabilitation is on target as he works toward full fitness for next year: “My recovery is going well and I cannot wait to jump on the blue bike soon.”

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team owner Louis Vosters added: “It’s great to have Glenn Coldenhoff on board for the next years. He is a great rider who is still making steps forward year after year. I really believe that in the Yamaha structure with YZ450FM he will be able to achieve the best possible results.”

The signing of Coldenhoff will be instrumental in Yamaha’s 2021 plans and beyond, adding experience alongside the in-form Seewer – who finished second in this year’s standings – and also Watson, who has won multiple MX2 grands prix during 2020.

“We are really happy to welcome Glenn to the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team,” stated Alexandre Kowalski, Yamaha Motor Europe off-road racing manger
. “He is a very professional, focused and dedicated rider that is committed to his sport and being the best. He has a lot of experience and he has proven on countless occasions over the past two years that he is capable of winning GPs, so we are excited to welcome him to the Yamaha family.

“I know that Glenn and Jeremy have a good relationship already, which will be nice to see them ride together and push each other to be strong inside the competitive MXGP class. Together with Jeremy, we have a strong team with a lot of experience, and this will be nice for Ben to learn and grow from. It is exciting for Yamaha and our factory MXGP team to enter the 2021 MXGP World Championship with this incredible line-up.”

Fourth in final MX2 standings ‘a positive’ declares Beaton

Fourth in final MX2 standings ‘a positive’ declares Beaton

Convincing end with another moto podium for Australian prospect.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Jed Beaton has declared his MX2 World Championship campaign as ‘a positive’ one after sealing fourth in the final point-standings and establishing himself as a legitimate front-runner in 2020.

Beaton scored fourth in the championship with three podiums overall, highlighted by nine moto podium results in what was a breakout season for the Australian.

“It’s been a long season, many ups and downs, but all in all it’s been a positive year for me and the team,” Beaton reflected. “Having completed a full season I know what it takes now and I know what I need to work on over the winter ahead of 2021. I’m actually really glad that we got a season in as at one point it looked like we weren’t going racing at all.

“The three GPs in a week, that was different, racing so frequently was different, but it was always a good time and it’s been a lot of work for the team as well as myself. The team has done a phenomenal job with such a tight schedule. It can’t have been easy so credit to them, they’ve done an awesome job.”

The final round at Garda Trentino ended on a strong note for the 22-year-old, taking seventh in moto one, but being able to rebound in moto two with a tight runner-up result and fourth for the round. Beaton was fourth overall for the weekend to cap-off the year.

“It’s been great to end the year with a runner-up finish in the last moto of the season,” he added “I had a great start and challenged for the win, so it’s positive to end the season like this. It’s a shame about the first moto, but moto two proved I can be up there with a good start.”

Gajser completes MXGP season with victory in Trentino

Gajser completes MXGP season with victory in Trentino

Final MX2 outing results in Watson achieving another overall win.

Image: Supplied.

MXGP world champion Tim Gajser completed the 2020 season with another overall victory at the Garda Trentino round, as Ben Watson achieved a round win in the final MX2 outing of his career.

Gajser went 2-1 for the round at Pietramurata, which saw the opening moto won by Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Kawasaki) over Gajser and Jeremy Seewer (Monster Energy Yamaha).

Moto two resulted in Gajser turning the tables on Febvre to clinch the top step of the podium, with the retiring Gautier Paulin (Monster Energy Yamaha) third. It was Gajser who won the final round, joined by Febvre and Paulin inside the top three.

While Team HRC’s Gajser captured the title on Wednesday with a round to spare, fourth overall on Sunday enabled Seewer to climb to runner-up in the final championship standings ahead of Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM), who was 12th at the final round due to a DNF in the second encounter.

Monster Energy Yamaha rider Watson delivered an emphatic result prior to stepping up to the premier class from next season, winning both MX2 motos for his second-career overall.

New champion Tom Vialle (Red Bull KTM) won moto one ahead of Maxime Renaux (Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori J1 Racing) and Watson, before Watson won moto two over Jed Beaton (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) and Isaac Gifting (Diga Procross GasGas Factory Juniors).

That placed Watson on top of the podium for the weekend, joined by Vialle and Renaux, while in the final championship points, Vialle had already been crowned ahead of Jago Geerts (Monster Energy Yamaha) and Renaux.

Beaton was top-finishing Australian overall in fourth position, also sealing that same result in the series, while Bailey Malkiewicz (Team Honda 114 Motorsports) went 15-9 for 11th overall. DRT Kawasaki’s Wilson Todd scored points with P13 in moto two for 19th on Sunday.

Enhanced Australian Supercross Championship in the works for 2021

Enhanced Australian Supercross Championship in the works for 2021

AUS SX Holdings to elevate series involvement across multiple areas.

Image: Foremost Media.

The Australian Supercross Championship will be enhanced from 2021 by series commercial rights-holders AUS SX Holdings in a bid to solidify the sport, which could see the AUS-X Open organisers promote multiple rounds on the calendar.

Since becoming involved in 2018, AUS SX Holdings has taken an arms-length approach in the series operation while utilising an assortment of individual promoters, but will elevate that involvement from next season.

Last year, Troy Bayliss Events hosted the Brisbane, Gillman and Wollongong rounds before the S-X Open International FIM Oceania Supercross Championship events in Auckland and Melbourne completed the calendar. However, from 2021, expect AUS SX Holdings to promote at least one round internally and will potentially partner with incoming event promoters for additional rounds.

“We’re definitely looking at it, whether we expand the amount of events that we run, although there will still be only one AUS-X Open event,” confirmed AUS SX Holdings co-founder Adam Bailey. “If there’s the potential for another Australian championship round or more, we’re evaluating that.

“The plan is five rounds in total for next year. That seems to be the general consensus within the industry – the manufacturers and brands – that they’d rather have five good ones than stretch to more than that until we can. That gives us the platform to build from and hopefully it might grow further again in 2022.”

AME Management, which is the operated by the same team behind AUS SX Holdings and the AUS-X Open, will takeover the commercial and sponsorship elements of the entire championship, which will add integral consistencies and opportunities across all rounds. The series will be rebranded altogether as part of this broad overhaul off the back of the 2020 series’ cancellation.

“Since we bought the rights to the series from MA, it’s been a staged approach,” Bailey explained. “When we first got involved, we were very gently involved, because we didn’t want to make any drastic changes, but slowly over time we are becoming more integrated, giving it more time and also focus.

“Last year we were more heavily involved in the background, which highlighted some areas that needed even more attention. AUS-X Open at Marvel Stadium had been such a huge focus for us, but now that we’ve been through that and done it, we can now ensure the rest of the series continues to move forward and grow as well.

“The next stage is for us to completely rebrand the series, which we had planned for this year, but it will obviously now roll out next year. All sponsorship elements will be managed internally by us, which allows us to have a consistent message across the whole series, to ensure that the delivery of sponsorship is done properly and that’s such a crucial, super-important area.

“That’s what we do full-time at AME Management – that’s our specialty in a lot of ways. For us to be able to bring that in-house, it will help other promoters, but will also help us attract new promoters that may not have experience or contacts in the motorcycle industry. A concert promoter, for example, could get involved in Supercross not having to handle any of those elements.”

A post-produced television broadcast is being targeted for all rounds in addition to the live AUS-X Open event in Melbourne, while AME Management will also continue to produce its behind the scenes ‘Supercross Life’ program in order to further showcase the personalities of the sport, according to Bailey.

“We obviously need to make sure that we will have the commercial support, which we have already started working on, but that’s definitely the goal to have a post-produced TV package for the whole series,” he added. “That will include at least Fox Sports and Kayo, perhaps a free-to-air network as well, to increase exposure for the series and value for the sponsors so we can lift the sport.

“Supercross Life is our behind the scenes series away from the racetrack, which we definitely want to do because we feel that’s the best style of content to show who the athletes are and get non-hardcore fans engaged with who our riders are. Unless they really know their stories and what goes on behind the scenes, it’s really hard to expect them to become true fans, so that will be in addition to the highlights packages.”

Beaton ‘gave everything’ in search of Pietramurata overall

Beaton ‘gave everything’ in search of Pietramurata overall

Australian makes ground on series podium with single round remaining.

Image: Supplied.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jed Beaton has said he ‘gave everything’ in search of winning the Grand Prix of Pietramurata overall, ultimately scoring a third podium of the 2020 MX2 World Championship season in P3.

Beaton was second in the opening moto and was in the frame to challenge for victory in the afternoon, needing just one more position to stand atop the podium, but crossing the line in fourth place.

That left Beaton a single point outside of the round victory, which was Jago Geerts (Monster Energy Yamaha), which was both frustrating and rewarding: “I gave everything I had in that second moto. I knew the overall was there and I just rode as hard as I could, but it wasn’t to be.

“It’s disappointing that I couldn’t get it done but at the same time I’m happy to be back on the podium. It’s great for the team too, they’ve been working really hard and it’s nice to pay them back with a solid result. One more round to go, so I’m looking to end the season with another podium.”

This latest result of Beaton sees him fourth in the championship standings with just one round remaining, only 13 points outside of Yamaha rider Maxime Renaux, who currently holds third position entering the Grand Prix of Garda Trentino this Sunday.

Points scored by Todd in long-awaited return to MX2 field

Experienced gained by DRT Kawasaki rider in return to competition.

Australian champion Wilson Todd made his long-awaited return to the MX2 World Championship in Italy on Wednesday after being injured in March, scoring points as he looks to build experience in the lead-up to 2021.

DRT Kawasaki’s Todd crushed his fingers, broke his fibula and tore his ACL in a first turn incident at Valkenswaard, which required surgery and almost ended his season altogether until a late decision was made to line up at Pietramurata.

All went to plan for Todd as he met his objective in scoring points, going 21-16 for 20th overall in his return to competition. The 22-year-old was satisfied with the experienced gained, despite entering with no expectations.

“We decided it was a good opportunity to do a little racing as a head-start for 2021,” Todd explained after sitting on the sidelines since round two of the season. “I only got as far as the first turn at Valkenswaard in March, breaking my finger, fibula and ACL.

“At the time I wasn’t even sure I’d be able to race again this year, so I went home to Australia to get surgery on the ACL and I only just started riding again. We’ve got new suspension and have been looking at sorting out set-up. I didn’t have any expectations, I just wanted to see how it goes and I got a little race practice and some points.”

Gasjer and Vialle crowned in penultimate round of MXGP

Gasjer and Vialle crowned in penultimate round of MXGP

World championships clinched at Pietramurata on Wednesday.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser has clinched the 2020 MXGP World Championship in the Grand Prix of Pietramurata, joined by new MX2 champion Tom Vialle who also wrapped up the title in Wednesday’s penultimate round.

Gajser won his third premier class crown by finishing second in moto one, this time successfully defending his crown and adding it to his 2016 and 2019 victories.

Moto one was taken out by Jeremy Seewer (Monster Energy Yamaha) ahead of Gajser and Alessandro Lupino (Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha), before the second moto was won by Gajser – wearing the number one plate in the afternoon – over Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Kawasaki).

Overall, Gajser secured his fourth round win of the season ahead of Seewer and Febvre, while in the championship, he now has an unbeatable 89-point advantage over Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM), who in turn is now only four points ahead of Seewer.

Image: Supplied.

Red Bull KTM’s Vialle earned his first MX2 World Championship with a round to spare by going 1-23 for eighth overall, but his win in moto one was enough to seal the series win.

That first outing was won by Vialle from Jed Beaton (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) and Maxime Renaux (Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori J1 Racing), before the second race was topped by Jago Geerts (Monster Energy Yamaha) and Ben Watson (Monster Energy Yamaha), with Thibault Benistant (Hutten Metaal Yamaha) third.

It was Geerts and Watson who made it a Yamaha 1-2 overall, with Beaton claiming a third podium of the season in third position after taking fourth in moto two. With a single round remaining, again at Pietramurata this Sunday, Vialle holds a 57-point lead from series runner-up Geerts and Renaux.

Of the remaining Australians in the field, Bailey Malkiewicz (Team Honda 114 Motorsports) continued his late run of consistent form with 11th position via 12-12 finishes, while Wilson Todd (DRT Kawasaki) returned from injury to go 21-16 for 20th overall.
