ASBK title ‘not over until it’s over’ insists Halliday

Yamaha Racing Team ace still a chance for the championship.

Yamaha Racing Team’s Cru Halliday is confident he’s a still chance for the Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) crown, insisting it’s ‘not over until it’s over’.

The New South Welshman has been a regular contender for the title all season long, however an untimely crash at Phillip Island two weeks ago – his first major blemish of the year – saw is chances decrease in a pivotal round, dropping him to fourth in the standings, 19 points behind leader Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing).

The 2018 Supersport champion acknowledges that all he can do is dominate Sydney Motorsport Park’s finale to boost his chances, however with three riders well in the hunt, something drastic would need to happen between the trio to allow Halliday to make up much-needed points.

“My hopes for the championship are still there,” Halliday declared to CycleOnline.com.au. “It’s still possible, but I have made it pretty hard for myself with that crash at Phillip Island. Everyone makes mistakes, and it’s just racing.

“It just came at the wrong time, but Sydney is a track that I’m quite good at and it’s my home track, so there will be a lot of family and friends there to support me.

“The thing that I need to do is go out and get pole position and two race wins – that’s easier said than done with the competition this year. I sort of need something to go severely wrong at the front – I’m not wishing that on anyone – but I need those front guys to clash or something so I can claw some points back. It’s not over until it’s over.”

Sydney Motorsport Park’s seventh and final round is scheduled for 1-3 November.

Former 250SX West champion Justin Hill has signed with Smartop Bullfrog Spas MotoConcepts Honda for the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, where he’ll pilot the CRF450R in the premier class.

Hill, who endured a difficult rookie season in the 450 category with JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing, will make his debut with the Honda squad at Anaheim 1, rather than this weekend’s Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas.

“I’m really excited to be a part of the Smartop Bullfrog Spas MotoConcepts Honda team,” said Hill. “Change is good and working with this new group of guys is a breath of fresh air. The bike is amazing, and I am looking forward to racing to the top this coming season.”

Team owner Mike Genova added: “Justin has championship speed and abilities and we are excited to have a rider of his calibre join the team. While Justin has had a couple of tough years – we believe that with hard work and commitment on his part, combined with our race-proven MCR Honda, he can be a top contender in 2020.”

Hill will join team regulars Malcolm Stewart and Vince Friese throughout the 2020 championship.

‘Totally different’ bike prompts optimistic Motegi mindset for Vinales

Admitting Motegi is a difficult track for Yamaha on paper, Maverick Vinales is optimistic his ‘totally different’ YZR-M1 will be able to deliver him a strong result at the Japenese grand prix this weekend.

The Spaniard, who finished seventh at the venue in 2018, is riding a wave of confidence after recording a number of positive results in recent rounds – the Monster Energy Yamaha rider landing on the box at Thailand two weeks ago.

“Well, actually, the feeling is really good,” said Vinales at the pre-event press conference. “After Thailand I feel great because I feel very positive on the bike and somehow I can push really hard on the last part of the race.

“Japan on paper looks very difficult for us but the bike is totally different, my mentality is different, so normally for my riding style, this track suits me really good. I’ve been getting good results here so I think we will have a good race, fight for the podium like we did in Thailand and be at the maximum as always.”

Vinales is currently in the fight for third in the championship standings, where he’s ranked fourth – four points behind third’s Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar), and one point ahead of Danilo Petrucci (Ducati Team).

Penrite Honda ‘more than willing’ to support Reed at home

Penrite Honda ‘more than willing’ to support Reed at home

Factory organisation prepared to host Australian if he remains aboard CRF450R.

Penrite Honda Racing would be open to supporting Australian icon Chad Reed if he remains aboard Honda machinery for the upcoming S-X Open Supercross FIM Oceania Championship in Auckland and Melbourne next month.

Local factory Honda team owner Yarrive Konsky has confirmed that his Australian championship-winning team would support 37-year-old Reed if requested in the pair of events that will also round out the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship.

Reed revealed this week that he will be back aboard privately-operated Honda equipment at this weekend’s Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas and it’s expected that he will ride a CRF450R in the New Zealand, Australian and also Paris supercross events. No confirmation has been made at this moment.

“It’s encouraging to see Chad choose a Honda to compete on at Monster Cup,” Konsky told MotoOnline.com.au. “He has also hinted that he will choose to race Honda in the other international events he competes in – it clearly says a lot about the new 2020 CRF450R. We would be more than willing to support him where we can so he can focus on being a racer whilst in Australia and New Zealand.”

The Penrite Honda Racing team has been all-conquering with American import Justin Brayton during the past three seasons of Australian supercross in SX1, this year targeting a fourth-straight premier class crown together. Honda also currently fields Brett Metcalfe in SX1, as well as Chris Blose and Mitchell Oldenburg in SX2.

A potential collaboration between Reed and Penrite Honda comes at a fitting time for the Melbourne-based squad, as it intends to contest selected rounds of Monster Energy AMA Supercross in 2020 and is currently evaluating a separate full-time 250SX West program in the US. It isn’t anticipated that Reed will have any ongoing connection to those programs.

Reed’s scheduled Oceania appearances – the series in which he is the reigning champion – will come at the Monster Energy S-X Open Auckland on 16 November, two weeks prior to his annual Australian homecoming at the high-profile Monster Energy AUS-X Open Melbourne.

Equal pressure despite championship standings says Maxwell

Equal pressure despite championship standings says Maxwell

Scoring race wins in Sydney’s final round vital for ASBK title prospects.

Image: Foremost Media.

Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Wayne Maxwell will approach Sydney Motorsport Park’s final round of the 2019 Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) with a clear goal – to win races on his way to a second-career crown.

Maxwell has a single ASBK championship to his credit, won with Suzuki in 2013, and he will enter next month’s finals just three points in arrears of defending champion Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing).

The ever-competitive 36-year-old would have been leading the standings entering Sydney if he was to keep Herfoss at bay in race two at Phillip Island, however, the end result meant that it will be Maxwell’s arch-rival who will carry the lead into round seven. According to Maxwell, it will make little difference in a winner takes all showdown.

“I’m not too concerned about the position, because for us it will be a case of using the same approach that we have since the two unfortunate incidents at round one and also Tailem Bend,” Maxwell told CycleOnline.com.au. “I need to try to win races and maximise the points, which we’ve been able to do pretty well since Morgan Park.

“It’s equal pressure whether you’re leading the championship or not at this stage – it’s the same for everyone in with a chance. I think that whoever’s going to win the championship will have to win races in Sydney. That’s the approach we need to take, to try and win races, but there will be a lot of guys trying to end the season on a high.”

Maxwell and a wide range of ASBK riders were on-track at Sydney Motorsport Park last weekend for a low-key shakedown, in which he drew added confidence from ahead of the championship-decider to be staged between 1-3 November.

“The test was good,” he added. “It’s been the same all year that I’ve been able to turn up, go straight to a lap-time on a second-hand tyre that’s competitive and then work to make the bike better from there as we go.

“Look, there are still a few things that we’re chasing, but I enjoy Sydney and Suzuki’s been super-successful there in the past. I can’t wait for the challenge because this year has been enjoyable with a new team, trying to win races and riding to the maximum.”

While Herfoss leads the title-chase entering Sydney’s final round from Maxwell, DesmoSport Ducati’s Mike Jones – who was involved in the controversial clash with Maxwell at Phillip Island – is also within striking distance at only 4.5 points behind. Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team), Josh Waters (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and Bryan Staring (Kawasaki BCperformance) also stand a mathematical chance.

Metcalfe relishing opportunity of home Port Adelaide round

Metcalfe relishing opportunity of home Port Adelaide round

South Australian looking to replicate race-winning performance from 2018.

Penrite Honda Racing’s Brett Metcalfe is relishing the opportunity to race in front of a home crowd this Saturday for the second round of the Australian Supercross Championship, as the South Australian looks to replicate his race-winning performance from 2018 at the Port Adelaide venue.

Metcalfe rode strongly at Brisbane’s opener last weekend, however a race two mishap ultimately denied him of standing on the box.

The former international possessed the same form in Queensland that took him to victory at last year’s stop in South Australian, where he became the only full-time domestic rider to defeat teammate and three-time champion Justin Brayton (Penrite Honda Racing).

“Last year was unreal and an awesome feeling,” Metcalfe told MotoOnline.com.au. “Living in the US for so long, I never had hometown races – any time I get the opportunity to be in South Australia racing at a professional level with friends, family and fans there – it’s just special. Last year winning, my only goal is to replicate that.”

The Australian Supercross Championship returns to a traditional 20-lap main event format on a full-size circuit.

Injured Richardson hopeful of Port Adelaide start

Injured Richardson hopeful of Port Adelaide start

Honda-mounted privateer suffers foot injuries in Brisbane crash.

Image: Foremost Media.

Dual SX2 champion Jackson Richardson is hopeful of racing the night show at Port Adelaide’s second round of the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship this weekend after suffering multiple foot injuries in a qualifying crash at Brisbane.

The Honda-mounted privateer was forced to eject while negotiating a rhythm section during the opening qualifying session of the season, the impact upon landing breaking all five toes on his right foot.

The popular Queenslander, who continued to ride during Brisbane’s night show before an error off the start in his heat race denied him of transferring to the SX1 main events, will attempt to ride in South Australia, where he’ll evaluate the pain of the injury during the event’s practice session.

“I misjudged one of the rhythms and gave it a bit more gas than I anticipated, the front-end came up – and it was right up – it all happened so quickly, so I thought the best thing to do was to let go and try and land on my feet,” Richardson explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “My right leg stuck in the ground when I landed – my foot just folded back a bit.

“The short story is I’ve broken all my toes – it’s not actually on my toes, but it’s like the knuckles on my foot. Right now, it’s gotten better since the weekend, but I’m just waiting to see how it feels by Saturday. I’m just going to rest it in the next couple of days and see how it feels coming into the weekend.

“I’ll make the call around practice, because I rode with it a bit on the weekend, so I know I can ride with it. I’ve just got to find a way to get rid of the pain a bit – I’ll figure it out.”

Richardson has pulled together a list of sponsors together for his rookie season in the premier class, attracting energy drink giant Rockstar Energy as a major backer of his efforts.

Dovizioso focused on defending runner-up position

Andrea Dovizioso is focused on defending his runner-up position in the MotoGP World Championship rankings ahead of Motegi this weekend, the Ducati Team rider currently holding down a comfortable 48-point advantage over third’s Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar).

With Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) already securing his sixth premier class crown in Thailand, Dovizioso is eager to finish the season the strongly, particularly in Japan this weekend where he believes the circuit will favour him.

“With the title already assigned in Thailand, our main aim now is to hold on to second place, and this is what we’ll be fighting for in the next four races,” Dovizioso explained. “Motegi is one of those special circuits where in the last few years we have been very competitive.

“Last year we missed out on the podium while fighting for the win, and I think that we will again be fast this year. We must continue to work hard to improve in all conditions and on all tracks and we’ll be giving our all in these last four races.”

The real fight for in the championship is the battle for the third, which sees Rins, Maverick Vinales (Monster Energy Yamaha) and Danillo Petrucci (Ducati Team) separated by just five points.

LCR Honda drafts in Zarco for final three MotoGP rounds

LCR Honda drafts in Zarco for final three MotoGP rounds

Frenchman released by Red Bull KTM to replace Nakagami.

Image: Supplied.

LCR Honda Idemitsu has drafted in embattled former KTM rider Johann Zarco for the final three rounds of the 2019 MotoGP World Championship in place of Takaaki Nakagami, who will undergo shoulder surgery following the Japanese grand prix.

Zarco was sensationally benched by Red Bull KTM Factory Racing last month after experiencing difficulties adapting to the RC16, cutting his two-year deal short not even one full season in.

While the Frenchman was set to remain under contract for the rest of the year on the sidelines, the Austrian manufacturer has released him from his commitments, enabling the former podium challenger to take on the opportunity aboard an LCR Honda.

“What an opportunity to have the last few races of the season on the LCR Honda Idemitsu bike,” said Zarco. “I’m really thankful to have this chance, and I will do my best to pick up some good results and to enjoy the time, because these could be the last three races I can do for a while.

“I would like to thank KTM for releasing me so that I can do these races on another bike. Let’s see what I can do. First of all I know that I will enjoy the Phillip Island track, it’s a fast circuit and I think the feeling could be good.

“We’ll cross our fingers that it can be, and we will see what is possible. The target is to ride at a good pace, and rediscover some of the good feeling I’ve had before.”

Zarco will commence his first race on the Honda at Phillip Island before racing at Sepang and Valencia. It was announced yesterday that Nakagami has signed a one-year contract extension with HRC and LCR Honda.
