Motegi comeback grants Dovizioso third in Japan

Starting from the third row, Andrea Dovizioso put on an incredible charge at Motegi’s 16th round of the MotoGP World Championship to land on the podium.

The Ducati Team ace positioned himself inside the top five in the opening stages before going onto make his way inside the top three, hunting down runner-up Fabio Quartararo (Petronas SRT Yamaha) in the closing laps, however ultimately falling shy of the number two position.

“At the end of the race my feeling with the bike was really excellent, so much so that we did our fastest lap on the penultimate lap,” Dovizioso explained. ‘Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to pass Quartararo, who I saw was in a bit of difficulty in the final stages, but I think I could have overtaken him if there had been one more lap.

“I’m quite disappointed with my first part of the race however, because despite having good grip we were unable to be fast enough. We’ll now have to analyze the situation in detail to understand what the problem was and be ready for the race at Phillip Island.”

The Italian has a firm grip on second in the championship standings as the series heads to Phillip Island this weekend for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

The Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup will travel to Australia in 2020 when it joins the Australian Superbike Championship at The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia between 8-10 May.

Won by Australian talent Billy Van Eerde last year, the single-make Asia Talent Cup is part of Dorna’s Road to MotoGP program utilising Honda NSF250R machinery.

“Motorcycling Australia and the Australian Superbike Championship are thrilled to welcome the Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup to Australia in 2020,” Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle commented.

“The International Motofest has quickly become a standout event on the Australian motorcycle calendar and the addition of ATC is a perfect fit. This provides a great opportunity for the fastest young talent within the Asia Pacific region to compete together and to start their journey on the Road to MotoGP.

“I am sure the IATC racing will be action-packed alongside Australia’s best riders in action and this makes the event a race weekend not to be missed.”

Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta also threw his support behind the event: “The Asia Talent Cup is one of the most important projects in our Road to MotoGP program and it’s an unrivalled opportunity for young riders in the region to begin their path to the top.

“We are excited to be heading to The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia, as it adds a new track to the Cup, which is always good for competition. Australia is an important country for grand prix racing, with MotoGP having race there since 1989 and multiple world champions hailing from the nation.”

This year, Harrison Voight, Jacob Roulstone and Luke Power have represented Australia in the Asia Talent Cup series, which also features events in Qatar, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan through six rounds.

Gardner admits Japanese GP error his own doing

SAG Racing ace crashes out at the Twin Ring Motegi.

Australian Remy Gardner has admitted the error that saw him crash out of the Japanese grand prix on Sunday was his own doing.

The SAG Racing contender was caught up in an earlier incident, and admittedly pushed too hard while attempting to make up time on the main group of riders, going down in the process.

“When the race started, I dropped back but didn’t panic,” Gardner commented. “It wasn’t perfect but I felt comfortable and then I got caught up in the Vierge/Lecuona incident and lost a bunch of time to the group.

“I went down because I was pushing too hard, it’s as simple as that. The next race is my home GP at Phillip Island and I will give it everything to get a result that we deserve there.”

Gardner is ranked 12th in the Moto2 World Championship following a string of difficult rounds, as the series heads to Phillip Island this weekend for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Reed encouraged by Monster Energy Cup showing

Dual AMA Supercross champion finishes ninth at the Las Vegas event.

Chad Reed says he’s encouraged by his showing at the weekend’s Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas, which saw him take on the event despite minimal bike time aboard a privateer Honda.

The two-time AMA Supercross champion, whose plans for 2020 are still uncertain, recorded a consistent 8-10-12 scorecard for ninth overall in the triple crown format.

The off-season race marked Reed’s first outing since suffering multiple injuries at the Seattle supercross in March, the New South Welshman making a last-minute decision to pilot Honda machinery after negotiations to continue with JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing fell flat in recent months.

“You obviously acknowledge and know that it’s going to be a tough weekend,” Reed stated in an interview with RacerX. “I think I finished 10th overall. The potential that I feel is there – that’s what you always want.

“Generally, though on paper it looks like we’re far off, I feel like with some time we can get there. I’m encouraged by the weekend. We had no issues – everything went smooth.”

Reed also indicated the CRF450R he used in Las Vegas will likely be shipped to New Zealand for the Monster Energy S-X Open Auckland next month, following by his annual homecoming at the AUS-X Open Melbourne.

Michelin to roll out 2020 tyre test during Phillip Island GP weekend

Michelin to roll out 2020 tyre test during Phillip Island GP weekend

Compulsory rear tyre test session scheduled for Friday.

Image: Supplied.

Michelin will roll out a 2020 tyre test during this weekend’s Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island, where all riders will need to complete a minimum of 11 laps in an additional one-off session.

The new specification rear tyre, as tested at Barcelona, Brno and Misano, will be evaluated at the Australian circuit to give Michelin the opportunity to assess the latest evolution of tyre – which has a new construction and is designed to improve performance – at a circuit that places high demands on the rear tyre.

Each rider will have one of the tyres available in either a soft or medium compound specification and will be required to test them in a separate 20-minute session on Friday.

The times recorded will not count towards qualification, and the tyres can only be used in this mandatory test session and will not be available for any other practice sessions, qualifying, warm-up or for the race.

The new specification is designed for the 2020 season and following evaluation of the data collected at Phillip Island, a decision will be made as to whether to add it to next year’s allocation.

This new tyre for the test will be asymmetric in design to match the demands of the circuit – the same as the tyres in the race allocation – with a harder left-hand side and will feature the compounds specifically designed to combat the huge stresses the tyres are placed under at Phillip Island.

Every rider will be requested to do a minimum of 11-laps and will be able to pair this test tyre with a front Michelin Power Slick from the specifications available to them at the Australian track, this extra front will not come from the riders’ allocation for the weekend and will be supplied separately to the usual allowance.

Rookie Evans earns career-best top five in South Australia

Yamalube Yamaha Racing challenger experience breakout Port Adelaide ride.

Premier class rookie Richie Evans experienced a breakout night in South Australia for round two of the Australian Supercross Championship, earning a career-best result of fifth in the main event.

The Yamalube Yamaha Racing rider, who’s still recovering from a shoulder injury sustained in the lead-up to the series, rode strongly all night on the challenging Port Adelaide circuit, qualifying sixth, finishing second in his heat and charging to fifth in the 20-lap main.

“I’m pretty happy with that,” Evans stated. “I know I’m not at the speed of the guys in front of me, but I wanted to get good track position early and then continue to do everything, every lap, and I was able to do that for the majority of the 20 laps.

“I could see Metty coming in the final but I didn’t want to do anything crazy, so I just kept my flow going and focused on what I was doing. If he got me, he got me! But, all up I’m really happy with fifth and now I’m fifth in the championship.”

Wollongong will host round three of the Australian Supercross Championship on 9 November in New South Wales.

GRT Yamaha signs Caricasulo and Gerloff for 2020 WorldSBK season

GRT Yamaha signs Caricasulo and Gerloff for 2020 WorldSBK season

GRT Yamaha has signed Italian Federico Caricasulo and American Garrett Gerloff for the 2020 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Caricasulo is already familiar with the GRT Yamaha squad, having contested the WorldSSP category with them in 2017 and 2018, while he’s currently ranked second in the championship standings with one round remaining aboard the YZF-R6.

“For me this is a dream come true,” said Caricasulo. “To have the chance to step up to WorldSBK is already fantastic, but to be given the opportunity to do so with Yamaha and in a team that I know well is just incredible.

“I grew up as a racer as part of the GRT Yamaha team, realising my potential on the world stage with them, so I’m excited to go back and start this new adventure.

“But for now, I need to put this to one side and focus on the final race of the season in the Supersport class. I am second in the championship, just eight points off the lead, so it’s still all to play for at the final round.

“Nothing would make me happier than stepping up to WorldSBK as the reigning Supersport world champion, and that’s exactly what we’ll be aiming for in Qatar next week.”

24-year-old Gerloff was the MotoAmerica Supersport champion in 2016 and 2017 before joining the Yamaha Factory Superbike Team in 2018 and 2019, most recently finishing third in the championship standings.

“I want to start out by saying thank you to Yamaha Motor USA for everything that they’ve done for me, for signing me in the first place so many years ago and really having faith in me,” Gerloff explained. “I wouldn’t be where I am now in my career without their help.

“I’m really excited to say that I’ll be continuing in the Yamaha family for 2020, this time with the GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Junior Team. I’m also really looking forward to representing America overseas. It’s something that I’ve always dreamed of doing and something that I’ve been preparing for, and I feel like I’m ready to do.

“I really appreciate Yamaha Europe giving me the opportunity to be that guy, to be one of the guys, to represent them and try to go get good results. I also want to say a big thanks to Ben Spies for really helping me out the past few months and getting my name out there and really pushing for me.

“I have a lot of goals that I really want to accomplish next year, and I know that with the team’s help and the Yamaha R1 that I’ll have a great opportunity of reaching them. I know this isn’t going to be easy, but I never give up. I’m ready to push myself and continue chasing my dream.”

Current GRT Yamaha rider Marco Melandri will retire at the conclusion of the season, while Sandro Cortese’s future remains uncertain.

Port Adelaide main event valuable for injured Richardson

Port Adelaide main event valuable for injured Richardson

Honda-mounted privateer earns top 10 result in South Australia.

Piecing together a full main event in Port Adelaide’s second round of the Australian Supercross Championship has proved valuable for Jackson Richardson, despite the Honda-mounted privateer reaggravating a foot injury during his heat race.

The two-time SX2 champion, who broke all five toes on his right foot at Brisbane’s season-opener before failing to qualify for the main, raced his first main event in South Australia since the S-X Open Auckland in November 2018.

It was important for Richardson to make it through the 20-lap encounter on Saturday night after a lack seat time in race conditions over the last year, the SX1 rookie running as high as sixth before crossing the line in P9.

“It’s definitely good to be back at the races and getting in that flow again, because it’s definitely different than being at the practice track,” Richardson explained to MotoOnline.com.au.

“At the practice track you can pound out laps all day long, and then you get to the race, and you’re like ‘geez, what the hell is this?’ I’m slowly adjusting to it, I just need to get healthy.

“Being nowhere near 100 percent, it’s good know the speed is there – I can definitely put it together, I just need to focus on getting back to 100 percent and getting everything back in line.

“I need to get everything back to how it was before having the big get-off at the start of the season – up until that point, I had an unscathed pre-season – everything was going to plan and nothing was out of wack. Sometimes it just doesn’t go your way, and we just have to keep moving forward.”

Richardson is ranked 15th in the championship standings as the series heads to Wollongong on 9 November.

Kawasaki teammate Tomac anticipated Cianciarulo speed

Kawasaki teammate Tomac anticipated Cianciarulo speed

New factory teammates do battle in Monster Energy Cup thriller.

The winning form of premier class rookie Adam Cianciarulo came as little surprise to new Monster Energy Kawasaki teammate Eli Tomac in the weekend’s Monster Energy Cup thriller.

Cianciarulo delivered an upset result by winning the overall during his 450 class debut in Las Vegas, overcoming defending cup champion Tomac following a race three showdown.

It was a spectacular way to decide the victory on Saturday night in the high-profile off-season affair, with Tomac opting to enter the ‘Joker Lane’ a lap prior to Cianciarulo, however, the rookie was able to remain composed for victory.

“We’ve only spent a handful of days with each other, but at the time in California I knew that we could easily end up in that situation because Adam’s been riding really fast there,” Tomac recalled post-race.

“I mean, we had a pace going there… that was gnarly and we both had our spots on the track, for sure. I tried to do something different because we were both going so fast, it was just like I couldn’t really make anything stick. Adam held that last lap together really well and I couldn’t get it done.”

The arrival of Cianciarulo to 450SX makes for one of the strongest factory team combinations in recent history at Monster Energy Kawasaki, with both expected to challenge for race wins and potentially the AMA Supercross title in 2020.

Australian entries confirmed for 2020 KTM Ultimate Race

Australian entries confirmed for 2020 KTM Ultimate Race

Arthur and Cheney top qualifying event in New South Wales.

KTM hosted its second KTM Ultimate Race Qualifiers event in Stroud, New South Wales, on 18-19 October prior to the weekend’s Transmoto 8-Hour, where a selection of high-calibre adventure riders tried their hand at winning one of two elusive entries into the 2020 KTM Ultimate Race in Morocco.

In the end, following a spectacular two days of action – both on and off the bike – it was determined that Australia will be represented by Simon Arthur and Graham Cheney during next year’s KTM Ultimate Race at the Merzouga Rally.

Each country that hosts a KTM Adventure Rallye receives two positions in the KTM Ultimate Race, with Arthur and Cheney set to each receive a fully-supported ride, which includes flights, accommodation, entry fees and a KTM 790 Adventure R to compete aboard, with a full race service under the guidance of pro-level and factory-backed off-road racers.

This year’s KTM Ultimate Race Qualifiers was packed with capable riders on an assortment of KTM adventure machinery, however, both Arthur and Cheney were fittingly equipped with the recently-released KTM 790 Adventure R model.

One of the inaugural winners of the KTM Ultimate Race Qualifiers, Steve Robertson was also on-hand to share his experience from earlier this year in Morocco.

Commencing the qualifying event on Friday was a 250-kilometre navigation challenge, which took riders through a mixture of terrain including a 40-kilometre section on Stockton Beach that will prove incredibly valuable once Arthur and Cheney arrive in Morocco for the sand-filled Merzouga Rally.

The navigation test also included a series of waypoints where riders had to upload a photo of their bike to Instagram in particular places using correct hashtags as supplied by event organisers.

Saturday provided entertainment for the spectators on location at the Transmoto event, as riders in the KTM Ultimate Race Qualifiers had to complete a pass/fail bike-lift, wheel-change challenge and two timed special tests.

The top five riders were then announced, based on accumulative scores, and they put on a final show with a ‘hot lap’ special test of the entire 26-minute Transmoto track.

“KTM always puts on a good event and the prize for this is quite remarkable, to be able to go and compete in the KTM Ultimate Race and represent Australia,” said Arthur. “I’ve only had the KTM 790 Adventure R for a few weeks, but it handled the conditions so well and did the job perfectly – it’s a very versatile bike. What a chance this is to see a different part of the world in Morocco!

“I’m on a program to try and get to Dakar in 2021, so this is perfect for me and I’m really grateful. This has been made possible for me by three organisations in particular, which are Choice Suspension, Canberra Motorcycle Centre and APlus Towing – we put this together as a team and got the outcome that we were chasing, so it’s really exciting for all of us.”

Cheney added: “I’m stoked to be able to qualify for the KTM Ultimate Race, especially considering I only picked the KTM 790 Adventure R up right before the event and it was basically stock-standard.

“I was really impressed with it though, the bike was definitely competitive throughout the qualifiers and now I’m looking forward to this money-can’t-buy experience in Morocco next year. The goal for me was to remain consistent, flow as well as I could and minimise mistakes during the special tests, which all worked out and I can’t wait to get over there now.”

It was another successful KTM Ultimate Race Qualifiers operated by the Transmoto Events team in Stroud, with Arthur and Cheney the final duo selected to represent KTM and Australia during the 2020 KTM Ultimate Race in Morocco.
