MX2 World Championship bound Wilson Todd will likely be sidelined for the remainder of the season after suffering injuries at Port Adelaide’s stop of the Australian Supercross Championship, according to the DPH Motorsport Husqvarna team.

The two-time Australian MX2 champion was hospitalised last weekend after crashing heavily in the opening stages of the main event, where he was thought to have suffered a pelvic injury.

Scans later determined that the Queenslander sustained a fracture his T5 vertebrae, while also experiencing significant soreness in his pelvis and hips.

“Unfortunately, it was another tough weekend,” said team manager Boyd Hocking. “I’m devastated for Wilson, after coming third in his heat, and running second in the final until a small mistake in the rhythm section and crashed very heavily, sustaining injuries to his pelvis and fracturing bones in his back.

“Luckily, I can confirm that doctors have had Wilson up and walking, but at this stage, I wouldn’t expect to see him back before the end of the season.”

The 21-year-old indicated in August that he has signed a deal to contest the 2020 MX2 World Championship.

Binder promoted to Red Bull KTM for MotoGP rookie season

Lecuona earns MotoGP seat with Red Bull KTM Tech3.

Brad Binder has been promoted to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing for his rookie season in the 2020 MotoGP World Championship, while his initial spot at Red Bull KTM Tech3 will be taken up by Spaniard Iker Lecuona.

The team shuffle comes after Johann Zarco departed the squad not even one full season into a two-year deal, prompting the Austrian manufacturer to cement its future with two premier class rookies.

Binder’s impressive progress through the Moto3 and Moto2 divisions meant the 24-year old was well on the road to a premier class saddle for 2020, but with a slot opening in the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team, Binder has been placed next to Pol Espargaro for his first term.

Lecuona, who has taken Moto2 podium honours in both 2018 and 2019, had been signed for a Moto2 ride in 2020. The 19-year old has now been promoted to the Red Bull KTM Tech3 MotoGP effort alongside Miguel Oliveira.

“It was clear that our plans for 2020 needed to change following our mid-season announcement,” said KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer. “After some thought and talks we decided to move in this direction and let the young, hungry guys with good experience in the other categories of MotoGP show us what they can do.

“Brad is a rider that has made his way through the KTM structure and we have no doubt whatsoever that he can walk into the Red Bull KTM team and keep showing that same style and never-give-up attitude we have seen for a long time.

“Iker comes into the Red Bull KTM Tech3 team and we’re super-confident that Hervé and his guys will be able to help and develop another rookie like they have done so well with Miguel this year. We know we are making good and exciting steps with our MotoGP project and with next season now fixed we can really start building up to this new chapter.”

The current MotoGP season resumes this weekend at Phillip Island for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Four-time EnduroGP world champion Matthew Phillips has been drafted into the Recover8-backed Australian International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) squad amid a team shakeup for the 11-16 November event in Portugal.

KTM-mounted Phillips joins the defending champions World Trophy team, as Fraser Higlett (Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team) moves to the Junior World Trophy team in place of the outgoing Wil Ruprecht (Yamaha).

“I am very excited to get the call up after a tough year with injury, with this being my seventh ISDE,” said Phillips. “It’s come at the just the right time to get a jump start on some training ready for a big off-season.

“I would like to think I have a lot to offer the team in experience and to be a great mentor to our younger riders. I am especially looking forward to being able to help out. My riding is on the improve every day and I hope to be a valuable team member on the scoreboard as well.”

The World Trophy team will also consist of Daniel Sanders (Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team), Josh Green (Active8 Yamalube Yamaha Racing), and Luke Styke (Active8 Yamalube Yamaha Racing).

Perth ASBK return confirmed alongside Supercars

Barbagallo Raceway in Perth has been named as the venue that the Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) will feature at alongside the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship in 2020.

The Pirtek Perth SuperNight, scheduled for 15-17 May 2020, will offer up a day/night schedule, while marking the return of ASBK in Western Australia following a four-year hiatus.

It was revealed in August that the ASBK would support the Supercars program at a then to be determined venue, the two championships running alongside each other most previously in 2013.

“Combining two championship events such as Supercars and ASBK is an exciting endeavour and requires a great deal of coordination,” said Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle.

“I’d like to thank all those who helped bring it together and I’m really looking forward to seeing all the action in WA next year.

“The Barbagallo Wanneroo circuit has always been well-attended for both two and four-wheeled motorsport events, Western Australia is a highly important region for Motorcycling Australia, the motorcycle industry and ASBK partners, so it’s great to bring the nation’s fastest riders back to WA in front of a big and enthusiastic audience of race fans.”

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer added: “It’s great to be doing an event with the ASBK championship. We look forward to working with them in Perth to put on an amazing show for fans of both two and four-wheels.”

Further details on the event are expected to be released in the early stages of 2020.

Possible Australian MXGP round remains a work in progress

Possible Australian MXGP round remains a work in progress

Target deferred to 2021 for world championship return in Australia.

Image: Supplied.

Plans for the MXGP World Championship to visit Australia are still a work in progress following speculation earlier this year, despite the country missing out on a spot on the 2020 calendar.

The official 2020 MXGP schedule was released last week, although Australia was evidently absent from the 20-event calendar after it was revealed in March that Dirt High Promotions’ Willie Thompson, promoter of the Manjimup 15,000, was working on bringing the world championship to Western Australia next season.

While unable to make an official comment on the state of an Australian grand prix when contacted by MotoOnline.com.au, Thompson did indicate he’s continuing to pursue the endeavour, with the goal now deferred to 2021.

It’s understood hosting a round of the MXGP requires significant funding that could only feasibly be provided by the government, which is currently proving to be a major hurdle for the parties involved. The WA government has previously supported global motorsport events, including both the World Rally Championship and Red Bull Air Race – both of which are no longer held in the state.

The MXGP World Championship will travel all across Europe in 2020, along with visiting Argentina, Indonesia, China and Turkey.

Allerton samples BMW S 1000RR ahead of Australian GP debut

Maxima BMW’s Glenn Allerton has had his first taste of the new 2019 S 1000RR ahead of debuting the model in the Superbike support class at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix this weekend.

Allerton tested the premier class contender at Winton in Victoria this week, where he was able to establish a base setting before visiting Phillip Island.

The 2019 S 1000RR marks the third generation of the German manufacturer’s superbike, boasting a newly-developed engine and updated suspension, along with a significant reduction in weight.

“I can’t wait to get on track this weekend and see what this BMW S 1000RR can do after yesterday’s test,” Allerton stated. “The team and I have been chomping at the bit to finally get the new bike on the circuit and take it racing.

“Out of the box, the 2019 S1000RR is fast, and we have seen that in all of the reports around the world, written by the media. What will it be like in terms of racing, we’ll just have to wait and see. The test at Winton has been a very important one as we have managed test all the options available on such a new platform.

“We can now head into the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix with a better understanding of the bike itself and where we might need to make some adjustments to make it even better for race conditions.”

Allerton claimed a race victory in the Australian Superbikes category at last year’s grand prix for second overall.

Lifting intensity key for defending champion Wilson

Lifting intensity key for defending champion Wilson

Defending SX2 champion Jay Wilson believes lifting his intensity in the coming rounds will lead to a season-first main event victory in the Australian Supercross Championship.

The Yamalube Yamaha Racing ace has recorded a 5-4 scorecard across the opening two rounds, the number one plate holder admittedly taking too long to bring his race intensity into the night show.

Wilson, who’ll line-up in the opening rounds of the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, finished third in his heat at Port Adelaide on Saturday before charging to fourth in the 15-lap main.

“Looking back, I just took too long to find my intensity in the afternoon sessions,” said Wilson. “I need to find my race pace quicker, get the combos worked out faster and get up to race pace in the first session on the track.

“I wasn’t far off by the main in terms of lap-times, but if my day started there, then I would give myself a much better chance at winning a final. When five or six riders are on the same second, then every bit counts.

“We have a couple of weeks off before round three and just pure intensity is what I will work on in the break. I feel a round win isn’t far away and we are still right in the hunt for the championship.”

Wilson remains in the hunt to successfully defend his SX2 crown, sitting eight points shy of the class leader in fifth position.

Camier lands 2020 WorldSBK deal with Barni Ducati

British ace cements future in the world championship.

The Barni Racing Team has announced Leon Camier will join the outfit for the 2020 FIM Motul Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Camier will ride the Ducati Panigale V4 R, making it his sixth different manufacturer during his WorldSBK career, while he’ll experience his first taste of the bike during the upcoming 13-14 November tests at MotorLand Aragon.

“I am very much looking forward to the new challenge in the next season,” Camier. “I will use all my riding and development skills to achieve top-level results together with Marco and his team.

“They have a close relation to the factory, are a very passionate, engineering-driven group with focus on results and I believe we will work well together. Having said that, my focus now is first to finish the season as strong as possible in Qatar with my current team.”

The British ace departs Moriwaki Althea Honda, the squad’s future uncertain after the Honda Racing Corporation confirmed it will enter an in-house factory team to be spearheaded by Alvaro Bautista.

Supercross return for Cooper at S-X Open Auckland

Supercross return for Cooper at S-X Open Auckland

Factory Honda rider joins line-up at New Zealand event.

New Zealand’s Cody Cooper will return to supercross racing at the 2019 Monster Energy S-X Open Auckland, marking the opening round of the S-X Open International FIM Oceania Supercross Championship and round four of the Australian Supercross Championship.

Cooper, a seven-time premier class champion in New Zealand motocross, has made a number of privateer stints in the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship over recent years, however his last full supercross campaign was in the 2017 New Zealand supercross series.

“Going last year, I got to see first hand how good of an event it is for supercross and motocross in New Zealand, so when I was asked this year I just had to be a part of it,” Cooper explained.

“To be racing supercross in front of 20,000 plus New Zealanders, yelling and screaming inside a stadium like Mt Smart, it’s going to be nuts, and to be given the opportunity to ride an event like this against the world’s best, you just have to take it while you still can.

“It would be awesome to get a result in New Zealand, I always seem to ride better when I’m at home, I have better peace of mind, I dig deep, but I know it’s not going to be easy with the level of competition that is competing this year.

“There are a lot of good riders coming, with a lot more experience, but I like being the dark horse so I’ll watch what they are doing, learn from them early, and then hopefully get in a good flow and be able to make something of it at the end.”

The S-X Open Auckland, scheduled for 16 November, is set to boast an international line-up consisting of Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing), Chad Reed (Honda), Joey Savatgy, and three-time Australian supercross champion Justin Brayton (Penrite Honda Racing).

Duffy learned from Blose in maiden supercross main event

Duffy learned from Blose in maiden supercross main event

SX2 rookie claims sixth in first-ever AUS Supercross main.

Image: Foremost Media.

Regan Duffy says he tagged onto the back of Chris Blose (Penrite Honda Racing) during his maiden main event at Port Adelaide’s second round of the Australian Supercross Championship, allowing him to learn from the experienced American.

Duffy rode strongly in just his second-ever round of supercross, finishing fourth in his heat to transfer directly to the main for the first time, putting on an excellent display of riding in the 15-lap outing before crossing the line in P6.

The Raceline KTM Thor rider entered the series with minimal time on a supercross track, having been called in to represent Australia at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) last month in the Netherlands.

“I’m really happy with sixth place tonight,” said Duffy. “After getting boxed out in the first turn I put my head down and kept charging.

“When Chris Blose came by me I used it as an opportunity to learn from him and we worked our way to the front of the field. I’m enjoying the process of learning supercross, I’ll be going home now to work on a few things and can’t wait for round three at Wollongong in a few weeks’ time.”

The Western Australian is ranked 11th in the championship standings as the series heads to Wollongong in New South Wales on 9 November.
