More variants for Harley-Davidson Streetfighter

Harley-Davidson is expected to have several variants of its new Bronx range later this year including a naked streetfighter, a street tracker and a cafe racer.

So far, the company has only revealed the streetfighter version.

However, trademark drawings support a street tracker version and images from an internal presentation to investors also suggest a cafe racer.

When the company unveiled its new water-cooled “midweight” platform in November, it included the company’s first adventure bike, the 145hp Pan America, and the 115hp Bronx Streetfighter.

These are expected to be the first of many models to come with “Revolution Max” engines of 500cc, 975cc and 1250cc.

Many would consider the 975 and 1250 as big displacements, but Harley calls them midweight which they are in Harley terms as their current engines range from 500cc to over 1900cc.

When they introduce their bareknuckle 115hp/94Nm Bronx Streetfighter later this year, it may be joined by variants in various engines sizes.

Apart from a cafe racer and a street tracker, there could also be a sportsbike, according to this image from Japanese magazine Young Machine.

Harley Sportsbike?

While we can see the cafe racer and tracker markets doing well, we wonder about Harley returning to making a sportsbike like its 1994 VR1000.

It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to give the Bronx a half fairing and extended belly pan as in the latest artist’s rendering.

VisorDown points out that a similar image is featured in the background of this photo from the Harley design house when the Bareknuckle was in its clay model stage.

But the question is why would Harley return to sportsbikes after axing its Buell brand and selling MV Agusta in the wake of the GFC?

Sportsbike sales have been declining in sales in recent years, although super-hi-tech models have had a slight recovery.

Of course, all this speculation about new models rests on the ability of the company to survive pandemic and the change of boss and board.

Is Harley-Davidson planning a sportsbike?

This image has been doing the rounds of the internet rumour mill for days suggesting Harley-Davidson is about planning to return to sportsbike manufacture.

It’s an artist’s rendering from Japanese magazine Young Machine who frequently speculate and don’t always get it right.

In October 2018, their artists suggested this would be the small bike Harley would make in China for the Asian market.

However, this is now the official Harley drawing of the 350cc bike they are calling project HD350. It’s substantially different to the Young Machine drawing.

So has the magazine go it right this time?

Asian Harleys

Meanwhile, India’s Hero MotoCorp is suggesting Harley may extend its Asian presence with a collaboration.

Hero MotoCorp’s Chairman, Pawan Munjal recently told the Times of India his company was open to partnering with Harley-Davidson, which is looking at making a 250-500cc motorcycle for the domestic market from 2022.

“The sooner it happens, it’s good for everyone,” he is quoted as saying.

Other recent motorcycle joint partnerships in India include KTM, Kawasaki and now Triumph with Bajaj; MV Agusta, Moto Guzzi and even Norton with Kinetic; and BMW’s G310 built by TVS.

Harley already has a factory in India making Street models and a plant in Thailand commissioned late last year to make motorcycles for Europe to avoid high tariffs on American products in response to Trump’s trade wars.

In June 2019, Harley-Davidson also announced plans for a joint venture with China’s Qianjiang to produce a motorcycle under their HD350 project, indicating a 350cc engine.

However, it could be even smaller as they now call it the HD338, presumably powered by the Benelli 338cc twin-cylinder engine from the Benelli 302S as Qianjiang also owns and makes the former Italian brand of motorcycle.

The baby Hog will hit the showrooms in China in June and India by the end of the year.

There is no word on whether it will be exported to any other markets, but we suspect it will be sold throughout Asia.

Harley focus on new models as sales slide

As expected, Harley-Davidson sales are down for the fifth year, but they plan to focus on Asia, small-capacity bikes, electric bicycles and bringing new models to market faster.

That could include the electric flat tracker (pictured above) which is an exciting update on the previous concept sketch.

Retail sales

Bottom line is global retail sales were down 1.4% with a 3.1% drop in the US and slight 0.5% increase in international markets. The share price dropped 3% after the overnight announcement.

The most promising sales result was a 2.7% rise in Asia/Pacific which includes Australia, ASEAN countries and Japan.

However, Australia isn’t contributing to that result with sales down 7.9%.

By comparison, European sales were down 3%, Latin America -3.9% and Canada -7.7%.

The biggest problem is the US domestic market which has dropped in 20 of the past 21 quarters since 2014.

The bulk of Harley’s sales are touring bikes which dropped 2.1% to 42.5% of all sales.

Cruisers (Softail, CVO and LiveWire) represent 35.6% of Harley sales, up 1.3%, while Street/Sportster is 21.3% and up 0.8%.

However, they don’t specify how many electric LiveWire bikes they’ve sold.

On the same day, Polaris Industries announced that Indian Motorcycle sales were up 7%.

They don’t provide exact sales figures, but Chairman and CEO Scott Wine says motorcycle revenue was up 37% to $119.48m.

Harley is upbeat about 2020 with new models such as the Pan America adventure bike, the “midweight” Bronx Streetfighter, small-capacity bikes made in China for the Asian market and even electric bicycles.

On the strength of these new models, revenue is planned to increase from $US4.53b to $US4.66b in 2020.

Part of that could be the reduction in impact of Trump’s tariff war, down this year to $US30m from $US97.9 million last year. Harley has now built a factory in Thailand to side-step tariffs and keep a lid on prices in Europe.

There are no plans yet to import Thai-made bikes to Australia.

President and CEO Matt Levatich says “transformed product development” is allowing them to bring new models such as the Pan America and Bronx to market 30% faster than before.

These new models will be released in September, so their impact will not be felt until 2021.

Matt says the new products also include “electric products, motorcycles in new segments and sizes, and even e-bicycles”.

But they haven’t forgotten their core customer, increasing their domestic share in the touring and cruiser segments.

“We’re also leading the electrification of motorcycles with class-leading products developed in conjunction with our new team and our EV development centre, LiveWire labs in Silicon Valley,” Matt says.

Interestingly, American compatriot Indian Motorcycle also says it gained market share, driven by the launch of the Challenger bagger a couple of months ago and the FTR 1200 street tracker.

If both American companies are increasing their domestic share, Japanese and European tourers and cruisers must be losing out.

Matt is pinning hopes on Asian markets through their collaboration with QJ in China to build small-capacity bikes.

Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer John Olin says this year they will not only launch a 350cc bike in China, but also the Bronx and electric bicycles.

China is the second biggest powered two-wheeler market in the world next to India, representing 24.9% of global motorcycle and scooter sales and increasing 5% last year to 16.4 million sales.

Harley-Davidson is targeting 50% of revenue to come from overseas markets by 2027.

Matt was effusive about the increase of 55,000 new riders in the US last year through their riding academy, compared with a net gain of 26,000 in 2018.

However, while they say 527,000 new riders last year joined the brand, that means 472,000 left Harley. 

Matt says their research shows they need to “bring people in, build their confidence and capability, and keep them riding through the critical first years of their riding journey”.

“We are testing and developing specific programs and actions right now that nurture new riders and inspire and develop all riders to continue riding with us,” he says.

Meet Harley-Davidson’s Revolution Max platform

Harley-Davidson has launched its new water-cooled “midweight” platform with its first adventure bike, the 145hp Pan America, and the 115hp Bronx Streetfighter.

These are the first of many models to come with “Revolution Max” engines of 500cc, 975cc and 1250cc.

The Pan America adventure tourer has 145hp (108kW) of power and 88Nm of torque.

They will be launched late next year and feature a new partnership with Brembo brakes and Michelin tyres.

Harley says the 60-degree V-twin Revolution Max platform engine is designed to offer “flexible performance with a broad powerband that builds to a surge of high-RPM power”.

Here is what Harley has to say in its official press release:

Minimising weight and maximising performance, the Revolution Max provides a narrow powertrain profile that is integrated into the motorcycle as a stressed member of the frame to enhance centre of gravity and handling.

The fully balanced powertrain has an internal counter balancer that mitigates primary engine vibration to enhance rider comfort and improve vehicle durability.

The 60-degree angle of the cylinders provides space for dual down draft throttle bodies that maximise air flow and increase performance.

Liquid cooling maintains a controlled engine temperature for consistent performance in changing environmental and riding situations.

Pan America and Bronx models will feature new Brembo radial monoblock four-piston calipers that “combine sharp edges with softer curves designed to create a style that complements the personality of the bike and delivers outstanding braking feel and capability”.

Michelin has also developed special co-branded tyres for each model.

From the photo galleries below we can see a lot of luggage accessories for the Pan America as well as a whole new range of Harley adventure gear.

And while the Streetfighter is expected to have much more lane angle than we are used to on Harleys, the photos don’t really show it cranked over to the max.
