Aussie prices for golden Bonnevilles

Triumph Australia has announced pricing for eight new Bonneville/Scrambler models with hand-painted “gold lining” or pinstriping.

The new Bonneville Gold Line Edition bikes highlight the skills of Triumph’s paint shop, presumably in Thailand where they are made.

Each bike will cost $1300 more than standard model.

That means that when they arrive in December the ride-away Aussie prices will be:

Bonneville T100 Gold Line Edition $19,190
Street Scrambler Gold Line Edition $19,490
Bonneville Speedmaster Gold Line Edition $23,790
Bonneville Bobber Gold Line Edition $23,790
Bonneville T120 Gold Line Edition $22,090
Bonneville T120 Black Gold Line Edition $22,090
Scrambler 1200 XC Gold Line Edition $24,690
Scrambler 1200 XE Gold Line Edition $26,090

The bikes will be available for one year only, so you may need to get in and order quickly as supply of all new bikes around the world seem to be slow due to global supply chain issues caused by the pandemic lockdowns last year.

Here are the descriptions of the models we will get in Australia showing their colours and available colour-matched accessories:

Hand painted

The hand-painted gold lining start with a two-colour base scheme, where the joining point between the two colours is flattened down.

The gold line is then hand-applied, usually in one continuous stroke by the artist, using a soft-bristled sword-liner brush. Once the pin stripe is in place, it’s sealed against the elements with a final clear coat of lacquer.

The paints used for the gold lining are specially formulated by mixing a powered colour with a cellulose lacquer for exactly the right consistency, as normal automotive paint is too thin for brush work.

Just like every hand-lined Triumph, the artist adds the finishing detail to each Gold Line Edition by signing their work with their initials.

Bloor signs Ace and Diamond Bonnevilles

The signature of Triumph Motorcycles boss Nick Bloor comes with each Triumph Bonneville T120 Ace and Diamond limited-edition model arriving in Australia in the next few weeks.

There will be 1400 Ace models at $18,450 and 900 Diamond Edition models at $18,150 (plus on-road costs). That compares with the current T120 retail price of $17,200.

However, each comes with a host of extras to justify the price, apart from Bloor’s signature.

The bikes were unveiled at the last November’s EICMA motorcycle show in Milan.

Triumph Australia Marketing Manager Dale McBride says customers had better be quick as there are only about 40 of each coming.

They follow the recent announcement of the upcoming 2.5-litre Rocket 3 TFC and Thruxton TFC.

Triumph recalls Bonnevilles over faulty electrics

Canada was the first to recall the faulty bikes and some three weeks later the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has published the official recall notice.

“The clutch cable may contact the main harness sheath, potentially causing damage to the wiring within the harness,” the notice says.

“If this condition occurs and remains undetected, it may lead to a loss of electrical power to various electrical circuits.

“As a consequence, headlight or indicator lighting may malfunction or engine power could be lost without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Faulty recall

It is believed Australian distributors PS Importers contacted known owners a couple of weeks ago.

Typically, the ACCC has taken several weeks to issue the public recall notice, despite the urgency of the issue.

The recall affects model year 2016-19 Triumphs with the following VIN (Vehicle identification number) ranges:

  • Street Scrambler from 798290-910740;
  • Street Twin 731919-913928 and 799237-831934;
  • Street Cup 780697-896532;
  • T100 759204-935306;
  • T100 Black 765369-935286;
  • T120 739727-935318; and
  • T120 Black 741136-933769.

Owners are asked to schedule an authorised Triumph Dealer “as soon as possible” to have the original faulty headstock tidy replaced with a new version, free of charge.

Bonneville recalls

The Bonneville range has been the subject of several recalls since they were introduced in 2016:

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.
