KTM Wins Six FIM Medals for 2022

Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen (KTM)’s just celebrated 333 medals won as of the 2022 FIM Awards ceremony, proving that their tenacity as a racing brand is (more or less) unmatched; sure, Ducati may have won the triple-crown title of Team Champion/Ride Champion/Constructor’s Champion in MotoGP, but the Austrians have nearly every other category covered.

2nd place on MotoGP (an impressive position, considering over a third of the 2022 GP grid was Team Red), is accompanied this year by an additional six World Champ titles won for KTM in MX2 Motocross (Tom Vialle), Hard Enduro (Manuel Lettenbichler), Flat Track (Gerard Bailo) and Moto2 (Augusto Fernandez).

Bottom line, it’s obvious KTM means business; question is, what’s next in store for KTM as a brand?

Given the recent debut of the brand’s insane supersport RC8C, we’re thinking a win in MotoGP is a big short-term goal, second only to increasing distribution of their bikes on a global scale. They’re here to show off “purity of design and uncompromising function” as a priority, with any titles won being a cause-and-effect perk of that equation.

Expect to see the Austrians hard at work as 2023’s season fast approaches; 2022’s quadruple-category monopoly may have been a big achievement for Team Orange, but we’re expecting more for 2023 – especially given their recent activity with Chinese brand CFMoto.

MotoGP™ recap: Portugal – making a splash

Prima Pramac Racing’s Johann Zarco made it a French one-two while Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) was back on the podium, profiting from a collision between Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) and Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) in the podium scrap, after his winning exploits in Argentina a few weeks beforehand. Despite missing out on the top three, Suzuki’s Alex Rins put in the ride of the day, and arguably the season so far, by coming from the back of the grid at lights out to claim P4.

2023 Honda Monkey and Super Cub First Look Preview

Honda keeps its miniMOTO line as strong as ever in 2023 thanks to returning Monkey and Super Cub C125 ABS models. The machines are unchanged, and both will be available starting this month with the Super Cub pricing at $3,849 and the Monkey starting at $4,249.

The Monkey and Super Cub made their way back to the US market in 2019, built around the existing 125cc air-cooled single powering the popular Grom. Unlike the Grom, however, the Monkey and Super Cub have rich histories that instantly touched off deep feelings of nostalgia for riders who were around in the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. The new versions remained true to the styling and design of the originals while featuring plenty of modern comforts, from LED lighting and LCD instrumentation to better brakes, suspension, and transmissions.

These features naturally remain on the 2023 models and the Monkey and Super Cub continue their appeal to urban riders who want a bike that’s lightweight, extremely easy to handle, easy to park, and highly fuel efficient. The Monkey is more sporty, with its scrambler-styling and decent on/off-road abilities. The Super Cub is more of an elevated scooter design that we found easy to ride and fantastic for surface street commutes during our first encounter back in 2019.

Either option is going to turn heads and inspire smiles. The Super Cub will be available in just one colorway in 2023, Pearl Gray, while the Monkey will come in two schemes, Pearl Nebula Red or Banana Yellow.

Jonathan Rea statements after Jerez Winter Test: “It has been a very worthwhile test because we had to make decisions on some ‘hard’ parts for the off season, so that we can start in a good way next year. We just had three or four of these important items to say yes or no on. Riding the 2023 bike is good. There are some areas we need to improve, because we are still doing the early work, especially from the electronics side. But step-by-step we will put the package together. The track was never in perfect shape as there were still some damp patches out there but we were able to make some decisions. I am happy to go into the off season healthy and happy. I look forward to a few weeks holiday now.”
