FIM helmet homologation face important updates

The Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, Chairman), Paul Duparc (FIM), Herve Poncharal (IRTA) & Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA), and the SBK Commission composed of Messrs. Gregorio Lavilla (Dorna, Chairman), Franck Vayssié (FIM) & Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA), in electronic meetings held on 5 February 2019 have decided to make use of FIM homologated helmets by riders in all Grand Prix and WorldSBK Championships mandatory from 3 June 2019 rather than from the first events of the 2019 season as announced earlier.

“Really good” race simulation for Viñales on Day 3

However, Viñales was upbeat about how the test went. “Well, (it was) really good,” he began, describing his feeling on the 2019 YZR-M1. “I actually missed one time attack in the morning which I planned to make in the afternoon but finally it was so hot that the tyre was sliding a lot, so I couldn’t improve my laptime from the morning.”

Dani Pedrosa, intervenido y tratado con células madre para reparar su fractura de clavícula derecha Dani Pedrosa ha sido intervenido quirúrgicamente en el Centro Médico Teknon de Barcelona por pseudoartrosis de clavícula derecha (fractura no consolidada), que se le diagnosticó a principios de enero. Los doctores Soler y Orozco han practicado al piloto español una cirugía reparadora consistente en la fijación de la fractura, utilizando para ello material de osteosíntesis y aportación de un bioinjerto constituido por una dosis de cuarenta millones de células madre autólogas cultivadas, medicamento de Terapia Avanzada autorizado por la Agencia Española de Medicamentos y Productos Sanitarios (AEMPS). El tricampeón mundial y leyenda de MotoGP inicia ahora una fase de convalecencia y posterior rehabilitación, quedando su evolución bajo atento control médico. En un principio, los especialistas que atienden a Pedrosa estiman en unos tres meses el tiempo necesario para la resolución de su lesión. Dani Pedrosa has undergone surgery at the Barcelona Teknon Medical Centre due to his right collarbone non-union fracture (lack of consolidation), diagnosed at the beginning of January. Doctors Soler and Orozco have performed the Spanish rider a reconstructive surgery consisting in the fracture estabilisation, using osteosynthesis material and contribution of bio-graft with a dose of forty million of autologous stem cells, Advanced Therapy drug authorized by the Spanish Medicine Agency (Agencia Española de Medicamentos y Productos Sanitarios AEMPS). The three-time World Champion and MotoGP Legend is now beginning a period of convalescence and recovery, under medical supervision. Doctors attending Pedrosa estimate his recovery will take arround three months. Pedrosa is optimistic and hopes this rehabilitation process to be positive until his full recovery is achieved: “At the moment, my mind is set on overcoming the current situation to continue working on the development of the KTM. Much to my regret, I have not been able to participate in the pre-season tests in Malaysia, but I am following closely the work of the KTM Racing Factory. I hope to be with them soon on the track. ”

Ducati domination on Day 3: Petrucci, Bagnaia set the pace

After Day 2 saw Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) miss out on setting the fastest ever lap of Sepang by just 0.067, Friday saw action in Malaysia end on a high as not one but six riders went quicker than Jorge Lorenzo’s quickest effort in 2018. The quickest of them all, however, was Danilo Petrucci (Mission Winnow Ducati) as the Italian stormed the timesheets with an awe-inspiring 1:58.239 after 32 laps – with rookie Francesco Bagnaia (Alma Pramac Racing) hot on his heels and only a fitting 0.063 in arrears after 21 laps. Next came his teammate Jack Miller only another small margin further back, the Aussie doing 47 laps and quick despite a crash, with Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati) completing the top four, three tenths off the top. All in all, a stunner of a day for Ducati machinery.

Day 3 midday: Ducati demolition

Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) continues to impress on his return from a lengthy injury layout, the British rider sixth on the timesheets after setting a fastest time of 1:58.780 – 0.541 off P1. Crutchlow has completed another 35 laps so far on Day 3, however, the number 35 rider has crashed – Turn 2, rider ok.

Syahrin ‘still quite slow’ as KTM transition continues

Motivation still high for Malaysian talent despite enduring difficulties.

Hafizh Syahrin admits he’s ‘still quite slow’ after day two of MotoGP testing at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, continuing his transition to the Austrian manufacturer with Red Bull KTM Tech3.

The Malaysian local was 25th on the timesheets on Thursday, 2.962s off from pace-setter Maverick Vinales (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing), who was half a second clear of the field.

Syahrin is aiming for improvements in today’s final outing, expressing his motivation isn’t lacking despite not gathering the results he’s after.

“To be honest, I’m still quite slow at the moment and far from the top, especially because Maverick improved in the end,” Syahrin commented. “But now I start to understand many things when I was on the track. When I followed some riders like my teammate Miguel and also Pol Espargaro and Mika Kallio I tried to understand how they can do such good turning.

“Now we found out where the point is and we’ll improve it for the last day tomorrow. I keep my motivation and work hard and also try to give my best for my team.”

Sepang’s test will wrap up this evening as one more test is scheduled at Losail International Circuit in Qatar on 23 February.

Rutledge world championship return set for Dutch grand prix

Reigning Australian women’s motocross champion Meghan Rutledge will make a return to the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship (WMX) at Valkenswaard’s MXGP of The Netherlands.

Rutledge previously contested the series in 2013 and 2014, finishing up with vice champion honours on both occasions before a thumb injury derailed her career during the 2015 season.

With the support of Kawasaki Europe and BUD Racing, the three-time Australian champion will target round one of the WMX, with hopes of a strong performance resulting in an invite to complete the five-stop series.

“It all came around randomly and unexpectedly,” Rutledge admitted to MotoOnline.com.au. “I had no intentions of going back to Europe – obviously I raced there in 2013 and 2014. During 2015 I suffered a pretty intense injury to my thumb, which pretty much put me out of competitive racing for three years.

“The start of 2018 was the first year I stepped onto a bike rode pain free, thanks to my local doctor. That brought my love for the sport back, and last year was a super successful year for me.

“I went down to Thredbo mountain bike riding during the off-season, and my partner Aaron said ‘why don’t we try and get back over there?’ – I just laughed at him and thought ‘like that’s going to happen’. I sent an email to just see what happens, and no more than a week later, I had an email from Kawasaki Europe that BUD Racing would take me on for round one of the world championship.”

The number 66 has been running multiple fundraising campaigns to assist with the associated costs of travelling to the 31 March event, which can be accessed through her Facebook page.

“The biggest thing that people don’t understand is that I don’t get any financial support,” she added. “I work five days a week as a personal trainer to cover my costs to go racing. I’ve had negative and positive comments from the fundraisers, but literally every cent made from them goes into racing.

“The first round itself is going to cost me pretty close to $10,000 to get over there. I actually just sold my car to fund this trip, so I’m without a car, but I’ve done what I’ve needed to do to give myself one last chance to show what I’ve got.”

Five hours still to go on Test Day Three

The final day of the three-day 2019 MotoGP pre-season test at Sepang is hotting up with with times now tumbling and a new outright (unofficial) fastest ever motorcycle lap of the Malaysian circuit by Danilo Petrucci.

He is not the only one under previous benchmarks though as it is a Ducati 1-2-3-4 at the top of the timesheets with five hours still remaining.

Incredibly, rookie rider and Moto2 World Champion Francesco Bagnaia, onboard the satellite Alma Pramac Racing Ducati is currently second on the timesheets.
