Maxima BMW drafts in Morris for Morgan Park ASBK

Maxima BMW has drafted in Aaron Morris for Morgan Park’s fourth round of the 2019 Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), scheduled for 5-7 July in Queensland.

Morris tested with the Next Gen Motorsports-operated outfit at Morgan park earlier this month aboard the BMW S 1000 RR, earning himself a spot on the team in what is understood to be a one-off appearance alongside regulars Glenn Allerton – should he recover in time from injury – and Ted Collins.

“I’m extremely grateful that both Wayne [Hepburn] and Shane [Kinderis] have decided to give me a go for round four,” said Morris. “I’m not really setting any goals, as such. Of course, I want to win – everyone wants to win.

“However, I simply go out there and do the best possible job I can. If you can win, you can, if you can’t, you can’t. I’ll just go out there and give it 110 percent and we’ll see how things pan out.”

“I know I’m racing a very competitive motorcycle and of course on the best tyres, being Pirelli. So, it will all be down to what I can do on track. I’m just so excited to get the round underway.”

Team manager Wayne Hepburn added: “It goes without saying that Aaron impressed both Shane and I with how he performed a few weeks ago. We always knew he was going to be fast, but it was his attitude and his way he gave feedback about the bike is which impressed us the most.

“It was a no brainer to offer him a one-off ride for round four of the ASBK to see what he can do under race conditions. At this stage, Aaron will only do round four of the championship. We’ll see how he goes and then make up our minds for what happens for the remaining three rounds of the championship.”

Morris has only completed one round in the premier class domestically, contesting the opening stop of the 2018 ASBK at Phillip Island, lodging a 6-10-10 scorecard for ninth overall.

‘Ducati’ electric scooter for $5000

A Ducati-branded Chinese-made electric scooter will be imported by Perth-based company Vmoto through Urban Moto Imports, arriving in July at about $5000.

When we announced the Italian manufacturer had signed the unusual deal to allow Chinese Super Soco electric scooters to carry their brand, Ducati Australia said they would not be sold here.Ducati Super SOCO electric scooters

They also emphasised that the scooters were not a Ducati product, but “an electric scooter that wears Ducati’s colours, no more than that under a licensing agreement”.

However, it now appears that they will be sold here in a partnership between Urban Moto Imports and Vmoto.

The fully electric moped is based on the Super SOCO CUx model with special edition sporting Ducati livery. Ducati Super SOCO electric scooters

$5000 ‘Ducati’

Ducati Racing will also use the Super SOCO full electric range of motorcycles and scooters as their preferred “paddock transport” throughout the 2019 MotoGP series.

Super SOCO Spokesman Andy Fenwick says the special Ducati version of the CUx moped would help “add even more credibility to the SOCO range”.

Urban Moto Imports CEO Joseph Elasmar confirms the Special Edition CUx Ducati will be available through the Super SOCO dealer network with pre-orders soon.

“We are expect pricing to be set around $5000,” he says.

Super Soco CUx

The Super Soco CUx scooter is available with four removable battery options for range of 60km to 120km from the 2700 watt maximum Bosch electric motor.

It also features a HD front camera with night vision and a G-force sensor that automatically activates the camera and sends video to a mobile phone in the event of a crash.

Other features include a high resolution dashboard, LED headlight, USB dock and smartphone connectivity that allows the rider to check the battery status.

The deal shows that Ducati is not shrinking away from the coming electric two-wheel revolution.

Ducati has been making noises about scooters and electrics over the past few years and has licensed two electric projects to other companies.

In 2015, there was the e-Scrambler painted in Scrambler Urban Enduro colours. It was made under licence to Ducati by Italwin, an Italian company specialising in pedal-assisted electric bicycles.

In 2017, Ducati Western Europe managing director Edouard Lotthe said they were looking at both scooters and electrics, while VW Group Chairman Matthias Mueller said Ducati would have an electric motorcycle by 2020.

In the same year the Ducati Zero futuristic design concept was produced by the Milano Scuola Politecnica di Design (Design Polytechnic School).

In 2018, Ducati unveiled its first electric mountain bike, the MIG-RR.

And this year Ducati boss Claudio Domenicali admitted he rides a Hypermotard converted to electric power with a Zero FX powertrain and said the company is about to join the electric bike race.

“The future is electric, we’re not far from starting series production,” he said.

So there could be more electrics from Ducati soon, rather than just a licensing agreement for luxury scooters.

MotoHome is a motorcycle home away from home

A Californian architecture student and rider has combined his passions to produce this MotoHome prototype which turns a motorcycle into a two-wheeled recreational vehicle.

Jeremy Carman (shouldn’t that be “Bikeman”!) launched a gofundme page in February 2018 to build his MotoHome and so far he has raised $US2916 toward his $5000 goal.MotoHome RV motorcycle tent

Car rooftop and ute-tray (pickup truck tray) tents have been available for a long time, but there have been few motorcycles with tents on top.

It is an interesting idea with advantages such as keeping you dry and safe from crocs and snakes. It would also protect your bike against bike thieves.

However, would you trust it not to fall over in the night if you have a restless sleep?

In 2016, a German company launched their Mobed motorcycle tent, but it has not yet gone into production that we know.

As for Jeremy’s two-wheeled MotoHome RV, he’s been working on it for nine years as part of his architecture thesis.

Jeremy has now produced this promo video which shows how capable the bike is.

“It rips, it drifts, it corners, and it even tackles water crossings like a beast,” he says.

“I’m so impressed by this first prototype but there’s still much to improve.”

There is no word on if or when it would go into production or how much it would cost.

However, it needs a fair amount of customising of the donor motorcycle, not the least of which is a longer swingarm.MotoHome RV motorcycle tent

Jeremy says he is also looking for help to improve the suspension on his converted Honda.

Prototype tripMotoHome RV motorcycle tent

The entire reason for designing a fully capable off-road motorcycle shelter is because the intention is to be able to travel as I please and take the path less traveled,” he says.

Jeremy has now slept more than 20 nights in the prototype and plans to take it on “the trip of a lifetime to the southernmost tip of South America and back”.

“I’ll be crossing over 20,000 miles of deserts, rivers, beaches, and possibly scaling the Andes mountains.

“I’ll be following in the footsteps of the many riders who’ve accomplished such amazing feats, however, the main difference is that I’ll be doing it on a bike I built and designed, that has an integrated shelter I built.”

Jeremy also hopes to turn the trip into a TV documentary.

Cemented Empire Kawasaki deal adds purpose to Bopping’s program

Cemented Empire Kawasaki deal adds purpose to Bopping’s program

Factory team expands to three riders for MX Nationals remainder.

Image: Foremost Media.

Cementing a deal with Empire Kawasaki to complete the remainder of the Pirelli MX Nationals has added purpose says Lawson Bopping, after he was initially drafted in as a replacement rider on a round to round basis.

The popular New South Welshman filled in for Dylan Long during rounds two and three of the series, while the team retained his services for Murray Bridge’s double-header, which saw the outfit expand to three riders with the return of Long as well as MXD regular Deakin Healier.

Bopping hadn’t contested an MX Nationals in three years prior to his comeback this season, since making a number of impressive performances. While the deal is motocross-only at this stage, his new-found focus of the completing the season remainder has come as a relief for the number 70.

“It’s just for the motocross series at this stage, but hopefully I’ll stay on board for supercross,” Bopping revealed to MotoOnline.com.au. “Ideally, it would be good stay on the team for the whole season. It’s really cool, it just started out as a fill-in ride for one race, and now it’s turned out to be a nine-round gig – I’m stoked with it.

“It’s a relief – the deal is cemented now, so now I can just focus on riding and training. Before, I didn’t know if I going to be able make it to the next round – I didn’t do a whole bunch of motos or riding from Wonthaggi to Murray Bridge – I did more between Broadford and Murray Bridge – but it’s a relief that the deal is done and that they’re keeping me on for motocross.

“I can live and breathe motocross for the next few months. It’s good having a goal – I’ve got more purpose now going training and doing my motos, so that’s really cool and I’m enjoying it. I just want to keep improving and get through this motocross series healthy. I really enjoy riding the Kawasaki – it’s a great bike.”

Bopping is ranked 11th in the MX1 championship standings after completing the four of the first five rounds.

BMW Concept R18 Cruiser First Look

“With its clear aesthetics openly on display, the Concept R18 embodies for me what motorcycling, at its core, is really about. It is all about feeling instead of thinking, and not using technology for self-staging, instead giving space for imagination. This concept bike appeals to something deep down—you just want to just get on it and ride off. But when you get off it again, you don’t just put it in the garage and walk away—you turn around again and give it a final parting glance,” explains Edgar Heinrich, head of BMW Motorrad Design, in a company press release.

Shoulder injury sidelines Camier for Misano WorldSBK test

Image: Supplied.

Moriwaki Althea Honda Team’s Leon Camier will miss this week’s Motul Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) test at Misano as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury sustained at Imola’s fifth round.

A blameless collision during the Superpole qualifying session at the Italian stop left him with damage to his left shoulder ligaments and was unfit to race that weekend, and now taking him out of two crucial days of testing.

The injury is expected to heal by itself with the British contender needing additional recovery time. No surgery is currently advisable, but the situation will be reassessed when necessary.

For the Misano test, the Moriwaki Althea Honda Team will field BSB Honda Racing’s Xavi Fores and All Japan Road Race JSB1000 Championship rider Yuki Takahashi alongside Moriwaki Althea Honda’s Ryuichi Kiyonari.

Will George Clooney after ride his crash?

Movie star George Clooney says he is giving motorcycling a rest after a scooter crash in Italy last year that split his helmet in half.

Clooney, along with his friend Brad Pitt, is a great lover of motorcycles. He has been photographed on a variety of bikes including BMWs, Moto Guzzis, Harleys and Triumphs.

Even though he crashed in Sardinia in June last year, he is only now talking about the incident because he is spruiking his new Stan series Catch 22.

He has been telling various media organisations that the crash happened while he was filming the TV series.

Clooney says a Mercedes driver pulled out in front of his max-scooter when he was travelling at about 110km/h.

He was thrown from the scooter and the impact split his helmet in two and knocked him out of his shoes.

Now, we have two questions: What sort of helmet was it and was he wearing sneakers or elasticised boots?

We’ve seen photos of him on motorbikes and he doesn’t seem to be wearing decent motorcycle gear. Sometimes he just wears sneakers, jeans, no jacket and even no helmet!

George Clooney crash accident
At least the boots look sturdy!

That may be fine for putt-putting around Lake Como’s quaint villages where he lives.

However, if he’s travelling 110km/h on a maxi-scooter, surely he should be wearing proper motorcycle protective gear.

Set an exampleGeorge Clooney crash accident

Having celebrities riding motorcycles is great for motorcycling as it inspires people to follow suit.

But it’s not a great advertisement for motorcycling if they crash without wearing proper gear.

He needs to set an example to other riders.

It’s also not great for motorcycling when he says he may be giving up on riding.

He actually says: “If you get nine lives, I got all of them used up at once — so I can let go of motorcycle riding for a while.”

Notice he is not giving up for ever!

Hopefully, if he gets back on a motorcycle or scooter he will wear proper gear and promote the importance of wearing the correct protection.

If he’s still concerned about riding again, maybe he should read our tips for getting back in the saddle after a crash!

Form improving for Waters in American campaign

Form improving for Waters in American campaign

Australian Pro Motocross contender 13th overall at round two.

Image: Foremost Media.

Australian Todd Waters believes his form is improving during his brief American campaign, finishing last weekend’s second round of the 2019 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at Fox Raceway P13 in the overall classification.

Waters, who’s racing the first three rounds as a privateer aboard Husqvarna machinery, lodged a 16-11 scorecard at the weekend’s stop following a pair of spirited performances.

The overall result places the popular Queenslander 14th in the championship rankings – six points shy of the top 10 – as his final appearance is scheduled for this weekend at Thunder Valley.

“The track was fast and smooth, with limited line options,” Waters explained. “Unfortunately, in race one I was taken down on lap one by [Justin] Hill. I put the hammer down and pushed from 35th to 16th. I was disappointed with this result as I felt my speed was better than this.

“The track started to deteriorate which suited my riding style and I was able to capitalise on my fitness and stamina towards the end of the moto. After crossing the finish line at the end of lap one in 17th position, I charged through to pass some top level riders and couldn’t quite get close enough to [Justin] Barcia to finish behind him in 11th. 16-11 [results] for 13th overall.

“It’s not the result that I’m wanting, however I feel like my riding and pace is progressing. I also feel really comfortable with my bike set-up and can’t thank Husqvarna USA and my other partners enough for making this possible.”

Waters is due to return home and resume his title hunt in the Pirelli MX Nationals, where’s he’s currently ranked third, 10 points down on series leader Luke Clout (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy).

Indian FTR 1200 ‘Hooligan Racers’ | Indians ready to scalp

Indian Motorcycles have unveiled two FTR 1200 ‘Hooligan’ race machines in the UK, at the Bike Shed London Show, with the two bikes prepared by S&S Cycle and to make their race debut in the hands of Krazy Horse teammates, Lee ‘KP’ Kirkpatrick and Leah Tokelove for the European Hooligan Championship during Wheels & Waves in June.

“The standard FTR 1200 is an awesome looking street bike with excellent handling and plenty of power,” says Grant Bester, Vice President and General Manager for Indian Motorcycle EMEA. “For racing on dirt ovals, the work by S&S Cycle turns the stock street bike into an awesome Hooligan race package and I can’t wait to see them hit the track at Wheels & Waves.”

S&S Cycle has played an integral part in the development and success of the FTR750 race program and applied that level of race development to the recently launched FTR 1200. Beyond the more visible changes such as the number plate, removal of the front brakes and the S&S 2-into-2 exhaust system, modifications have been made to the riding position, clearance, suspension and handling with special race parts designed, or selected, by S&S Cycle. Headline figures are a weight reduction of over 25kg, and a wheelbase shortened from 157cm to 148cm.

To improve clearance for the extreme lean angles of flat track racing, the oil cooler, battery, starter solenoid and voltage regulator have been moved from their stock position behind the front wheel and allow the use of -2 degree neck cups in the S&S billet triple-clamps. This sharpens the handling through a steeper rake and shorter wheelbase and the handling can be further tuned with the 8mm of movement in the adjustable offsets of the S&S triple clamps.

For race-ready suspension, the Hooligans feature fully-adjustable inverted cartridge front forks and a FOX FTR 1200 race monoshock, with remote reservoir, specifically designed for flat track racing. Matched to the rear shock is a new, shorter S&S swingarm for better handling and feel. With the new swingarm 25mm shorter, the rear wheel could touch the standard underseat fuel tank, so a smaller, aluminium fuel cell has been designed.

To attack the ovals, the rider is given a more commanding position with wider Pro Series Protaper bars which are brought closer to the rider with new risers to get the elbows up. New frame spars re-position the footpegs for better clearance and the new sub-frame, housing a smaller and lighter Lithium Ion battery, features a carbon fibre race seat tail unit.

Completing the race package are 19” Roland Sands Design wheels wearing Dunlop DT3 flat track race tyres and a 520 race chain running on the standard front sprocket and custom Vortex rear sprocket.

Lee ‘KP’ Kirkpatrick

“I’ve been looking forward to riding an FTR 1200 ever since I first laid eyes on one. So, when Indian Motorcycle asked if I’d be up for racing an S&S prepared FTR 1200 hooligan bike in Europe you can probably guess what my answer was. It’s insane; not just how good it looks, the engineering work that’s gone into them and to be given the chance to race one, it’s such an honour. I’m looking forward to getting some testing time on the bike, working with Indian and S&S Cycle on the development.”

Leah Tokelove

“Imagine my elation when I got asked if I would like to race one,” she says. “That feeling was next level. After seeing the bike for the first time in its Hooligan form, I’m just blown away by the level of detail and consideration that has gone into transforming this street bike into a racing bike. All of the parts used are of the highest quality and everything has been considered; the craftsmanship is unreal. S&S have done a fantastic job of developing the Hooligan racer from the original FTR 1200, their involvement has enabled Indian to project their Hooligan team to a whole new level, so thanks to S&S Cycle for their support. I am one very happy Hooligan with Pigtails – Let’s go racing!”
