Into Q2 and times were coming thick and fast right from the get-go, with the Dynavolt Intact GP riders of Marcel Schrötter and Tom Lüthi who were pushing hard at the front, making it a true teammate tussle. In the end however, one late flying lap from Schrötter put him on pole position, the first German rider to take pole at Mugello in the Intermediate class since Martin Wimmer in 1985. With Lüthi taking second, it was a Dynavolt Intact GP one-two, whilst Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) in third.
Take the Alger Nomad Tex Jacket, for example. This piece pays homage to Italian racer Edi Orioli, a multiple race winner through the late ’80s and early ’90s. The highly ventilated textile jacket is made from Trixivent hyperfabric alongside mesh panels. There are suede inserts for additional abrasion resistance, and Pro Shape protectors for the shoulders and elbows are also available. You get 11 total patches on the Alger, eight of which are fixed and three which can be removed and replaced. Round out the look with the elasticized textile Alger Pants and you’re looking at a pretty comfortable getup.
However, with five minutes to go, it was all change, as more history-making beckoned in the Tuscan hills. Marc Marquez was faced with the prospect of being off of the front row for the first time in 2019. The reigning Champion and MotoGP Rookie Quartararo went head-to-head in the dying moments of the session, beating each other in every sector, both looking to take pole. In the end, an inadvertent slipstream from Dovizioso dragged Marquez to pole by over two tenths from Fabio Quartararo. Danilo Petrucci (Mission Winnow Ducati) placed in third, giving three different nationalities on three different bikes on the front row.
Meanwhile, it was disaster for Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s Valentino Rossi, who could only manage eighth, meaning twelve months on from securing pole position, The Doctor will start from 18th on the grid. Repsol Honda Team’s Jorge Lorenzo and Ecstar Suzuki Team’s Alex Rins also missed out.
Into Q2, it was more hectic activity from the Moto3™ class, as Tony Arbolino (VNE Snipers) blasted his way to pole position for his home Grand Prix, with a new lap record. In second place, Gabriel Rodrigo (Kömmerling Gresini Moto3) was back on the front row, whilst third place belonged to Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Leopard Racing). Heading up row two was Andrea Migno (Bester Capital Dubai), looking for his second Moto3™ win at Mugello. Fifth, Tatsuki Suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse) will be hoping for more front-running come race day.
The crucial FP3 session concluded for Moto2™ at the Gran Premio D’Italia Oakley, with Augusto Fernandez (FLEXBOX HP 40) showing a strong hand at the top of the timesheets. However, it was a disaster for his teammate, Lorenzo Baldassarri, who once again found himself going through Q1, after suffering a technical problem and only finishing 18th.
However, Petrux looks set to have a fight on his hands in the vital Q2 later on as he is joined by Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who last achieved a front row start at Phillip Island, back in 2016, when he was third. His best starting position with KTM is fifth, achieved at COTA this season, highlighting the progress both he and the bike have made.

Eclipsing his previous record, which was set in the last year’s race, by just 0.2km/h, Dovizioso was 1.7km/h quicker than teammate Danilo Petrucci during the FP3 session at Mugello. But as if that wasn’t enough, Petrucci clocked 355.0km/h during the same session to see himself move into the top five fastest ever speeds in MotoGP™ history. However, with qualifying and the race still to come surely the 357km/h barrier is in reach.
