Fabio Quartararo has arm pump surgery in Barcelona

Fabio Quartararo undergoes successful arm pump surgery

Fabio Quartararo underwent arm pump surgery to his right forearm on Tuesday morning in Barcelona, in a procedure carried out at the Hospital Universitari Dexeus.

Although the issue was not an urgent one, Quartararo and his team decided to undergo surgery now in order to avoid future complications during the season.

The Petronas Yamaha Sepang Racing Team rider sought medical advice following the Italian GP. Increased demands on his arm during the final part of the race had exacerbated the compartmental syndrome and caused him to investigate a more immediate solution.

Fabio Quartararo

“It’s an operation that we hadn’t previously scheduled, but which we decided to go ahead with after discussions with Dr. Xavier Mir following the Italian GP. The conditions I experienced last Sunday weren’t normal, and they alerted us to the possibility of an arm pump issue. I preferred to have it treated now, in order to avoid any surprises in the future and be able to forget about it for the rest of the season. It was a short operation and one often performed on many riders, and was done by an expert on the matter. I want to thank Dr. Mir and his team for their availability and their work. I’m looking forward to the Catalan GP next week!”

The operation, lasting just over 1 hour, was performed by Dr. Xavier Mir and the Icatme Department of Traumatology team.

Dr. Mir

“Yesterday Fabio came for a consultation and we did an MRI with rest and resistence, which confirmed that he was suffering from compartmental syndrome in his right forearm flexors. Once this diagnosis was made, we decided to release the flexor muscles by opening the compression. Today’s operation went well; now Fabio will undergo a treatment programme to prevent inflammation and will remain in hospital for 24 hours. In a couple of days he will begin physiotherapy and hopefully he will be fit to race at the Catalan GP.”

Double demerit points endanger licence

Riders are warned they could have their licence suspended in one hit under double demerit points which apply this weekend in NSW for the Queen’s Birthday (June 8-10, 2019).

It follows a hefty 14 demerit points and $1200 fine handed out to a Harley-Davidson rider over the Western Australia Day long weekend (June 1-3, 2019).

Traffic Enforcement Group officers tweeted the above photo of the fine after nabbing the rider at more than 120km/h in an 80km/h zone in Ravenswood.

Police noted on the fine that the rider told them: “She (his bike) was flooding and gurgling; just gave it a blat”.

His licence will be suspended for three months.

Double points danger

Double demerits apply in certain holidays in NSW, the ACT and WA.

Riders from Victoria, Tasmania, Northern Territory and South Australia passing through NSW, ACT or WA during a declared holiday period do not cop the double demerits.

Police cops speed speeding sensation annual demerit

However, Queensland riders should note that in certain circumstances they do apply.

The law in Queensland is that double points do apply to speeding offences of 21km/h or greater over the speed limit and seatbelt offences if they occur more than once within a 12 month period.

Lawyer Stephen Hayles of Macrossan and Amiet Solicitors says he has been asked by clients about the system after copping a fine in an applicable state.

“For example if you commit two speeding offences of driving 21km/h over the speed limit in a 12 month period, you will be allocated four demerit points for the first offence and four demerit points for the second offence plus an additional four demerit points,” he says.

“This means that you will have accumulated 12 demerit points within a 12 month period and you risk having your licence suspended.”

How demerit points are recorded

NSW police blitz demerit

Double points apply in NSW and ACT over the Australia Day weekend, Easter, Anzac Day, Queen’s Birthday, Labour Day and Christmas/New Year (from December 21 2018).

In WA, the double points apply on Australia Day (unless it falls on a week day), Labour Day, Easter, Anzac Day (unless it falls on a week day), Western Australia Day, Queen’s Birthday, and Christmas/New Year.

If a rider in another state commits a traffic offence in a state during a double-demerit period, the offence is recorded as a double demerit offence on their traffic history in the state where the offence happened.

The state licensing authority will then report the offence to the transport department in your state who will record the offence on your traffic history.

However, the double points will only apply in Queensland under the circumstances described above.

Choice of penalty

Stephen says that if you have committed a traffic offence recently and you receive a Queensland Transport notice that you have accumulated your allowed demerits, you will have a choice of a good driving behaviour period or a licence suspension for a period.

“When considering whether to agree to a good behaviour driving behaviour period and a licence suspension, it is important that a licence holder understands that accepting a suspension of their licence may preclude them from making an Application for a Special Hardship Order or an Application for a Restricted (Work) Licence for the next five years,” he warns.

If you are unsure about how many demerit points you have, you can search your record online at your state’s transport department website or call them and request a copy of your traffic history.

Yamaha Motor Australia has revealed its enhanced 2020 range of motocross bikes, headlined by a host of upgrades for its championship-winning YZ450F.

The new model features a lighter and more compact engine, redesigned frame with new flex characteristics and host of other features to deliver a lighter, more powerful and better handling experience.

The new 449cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, electric start engine features an all-new compact and lighter cylinder head with redesigned combustion chamber shape, steeper valve angles and more aggressive cam profiles.

The rearward-slanted cylinder houses a higher compression piston with low friction rings attached to a longer connecting rod. The transmission has been refined to provide smoother shifting, and a more efficient crank breather system has been adopted to decrease pumping losses.

In all, the lighter, more compact engine produces increased power across the entire RPM range for stronger and more linear pulling power. The new motor is housed in the latest evolution of Yamaha’s lightweight aluminium bilateral beam frame, which has been redesigned with all-new flex characteristics and provides improved cornering performance, traction and bump reaction to give the rider more confidence to push harder.

Other chassis components such as engine mounts, top triple clamp and front axle, as well as the class-leading KYB suspension with enhanced compression and rebound characteristics are carefully refined to reduce weight while improving handling and performance.

To bring the new package to a stop, the 2020 YZ450F features a newly designed front brake caliper, brake pads and front and rear discs. The overall changes of the 2020 YZ450F deliver increased power output with more controllable linear acceleration and lightweight handling characteristics that mimic a YZ250F.

Featuring Yamaha’s advanced racing technology, the new 2020 YZ450F has been updated to give racers the edge right out of the gate. Standard equipment including electric start, a lightweight lithium battery, advanced fuel injection, and a wrap around rear-positioned exhaust deliver powerful and reliable performance featuring industry leading mass-centralisation.

Racers can achieve quicker, smoother race starts with Yamaha’s Launch Control System, adjust their on-track performance using a smartphone thanks to the Yamaha Power Tuner App, and choose between two user defined ECU maps on the fly with the handlebar mounted dual-mode engine map switch.

The new 2020 YZ450F will be available from dealers next month in Team Yamaha Blue and Grey – pricing and availability are to be announced.

Some New Dirt Models Among Yamahas (Partial) Class Of 2020

Yamaha’s bringing back several models for 2020, mostly with new graphics. See them below, along with a huge photo gallery.

Begin press release:

2020 Star Venture

Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, today introduced the 2020 Star Venture, a luxurious, technologically advanced transcontinental touring motorcycle that offers riders the opportunity to journey further than ever before. The Star Venture incorporates convenient features like Sure-Park forward and reverse parking assist, dual-zone audio capability, drive mode settings that adjust throttle response, traction control, an adjustable rider backrest, heated handlebar grips, heated rider and passenger seats and backrests, a multi-function infotainment system and more. Combined with Yamaha’s renowned quality, performance, and reliability, the Star Venture represents the very top of the luxury motorcycle touring segment.

Developed specifically for the needs of long-distance touring, the Star Venture boasts a massive and torque-rich 113 cubic inch (1854cc) air-cooled V-twin engine to deliver a smooth and comfortable ride on long days in the saddle. A six-speed transmission makes the most of the huge low-end torque, from brisk acceleration in lower gears to relaxed highway cruising.

Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T), a ride-by-wire throttle control system, converts the rider’s grip input into calculated throttle control providing precise and refined responsiveness. Yamaha D-Mode allows the rider to choose from two different throttle response settings (an ultra-smooth touring mode, and a sport mode for sharper response), while the traction control system helps prevent wheel spin while accelerating. A finely-tuned cruise control system also comes standard on the Star Venture, assisting with reduced rider fatigue and improved fuel economy.

As the most technologically advanced luxury touring motorcycle in history, the Star Venture features Yamaha’s Sure-Park System that provides forward and reverse drive modes which simplify potentially tricky parking situations, even on rough or poor-traction surfaces. The unique infotainment system provides direct access to vehicle controls, data, and a range of audio sources and wireless Bluetooth communications through a 7-inch, full-color LCD touchscreen that incorporates handlebar controls and voice command accessibility.

The Star Venture’s light and responsive feel results from an advanced hybrid chassis that creates straight-line stability balanced with agile handling, and suspension that provides ideal bump absorption while retaining performance at higher speeds on curvy roads.

Unbeatable braking confidence is achieved through Yamaha’s Unified Braking System, which dynamically adjusts front and rear brake force balance in real time to ensure linear braking feel and power, combined with a refined antilock braking system (ABS) that prevents wheel lock-ups when dealing with reduced-traction road conditions.

Airflow and temperature control has been carefully considered to optimize rider comfort. A stylish full-coverage fairing and electronically adjustable windscreen provide ample wind protection, while external visors at the middle of the fairing and lower vents located near the floorboards can be adjusted to direct air towards or away from riders depending on conditions. Heated contact points in the handlebar grips, seats, and backrests all come as standard equipment to keep riders and passengers warm when the temperature drops.

Packing for long journeys on the Star Venture is no problem thanks to side cases, a top case, and faring storage compartments that provide a combined total of 37.3 gallons of storage volume. Yamaha’s Smart Key system with remote key fob allows for easy access to the luggage system and fuel tank cap, provides for simplified starting, and offers an “answer-back” function for locating the motorcycle in a crowded parking area. All-LED lighting looks sharp and keeps the road bright at night, and a class-leading 6.6-gallon fuel tank means plenty of time between fuel stops.

Transcontinental (TC) Option Package
In addition to LED fog lights, a range of infotainment upgrades comes with the Star Venture Transcontinental Option Package. GPS navigation with points-of-interest and route logging helps to simplify the planning, sharing, and uploading of ride routes from a home computer. A CB radio system can link riders to others on the road, while SiriusXM and SiriusXM Travel Link provides satellite music, weather, and traffic information. An extra pair of high-output passenger speakers and Yamaha’s exclusive Dual Zone audio control allows rider and passenger to select different audio sources, hold private phones calls and more with an accessory headset and mic. Add it all up, and the TC Option Package offers one of the most advanced infotainment systems ever featured on a motorcycle.

The 2020 Yamaha Star Venture will be available in Granite Gray and a new Impact Blue color scheme for an MSRP of $24,999 for base models and $26,999 for models equipped with the Transcontinental Option Package. All models and colors will begin arriving at authorized Yamaha dealerships beginning in November.

Journey Further
Yamaha Star transcontinental tourers combine powerful and emotional fuel-injected V-Twin performance, state-of-the-art infotainment technology, the ultimate in rider/passenger comfort, and heart-pounding style – all designed to help riders journey further than ever before.

Motorcycle Spoked-Wheel Maintenance

Spoked wheels have been around for as long as, well, motorcycles. It wasn’t until the 1970s that cast wheels began to appear on production street motorcycles, but that didn’t make spoked wheels obsolete. In fact, spoked wheels are still the best approach for keeping things rolling on dirt bikes, adventure bikes, and custom and classically styled streetbikes. But with those spokes comes required maintenance and in some cases actual truing of the wheel.

Quartararo explains timing of arm pump operation

“I’ve had a few early warnings before, whether it was in Qatar, Austin or Le Mans, but nothing really bad,” began Quartararo. “At Mugello, unfortunately, I had a small problem with the pressure of the front tyre, which forced me to force a lot from the beginning. From mid-race, the pains were accentuated and it is precisely at this moment that I started to tumble in the standings. After the race, we decided to make a detour to Barcelona to consult Dr. Mir and his verdict was clear: sooner or later, it was necessary to operate!
