Foggia the rider to beat ahead of qualifying

The Italian was fastest in FP3 but it’s his FP2 time that remains the fastest overall in Austin

Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing) is the rider to beat heading into Moto3™ qualifying at the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas after topping FP3 by 0.4s, but it’s his FP3 time – a 2:15.440 – that sits fastest of the weekend so far. Andrea Migno (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Daniel Holgado (Red Bull KTM Ajo) remain inside the top three on the combined times.

Foggia on fire in red-flagged session

Just over 10 minutes into the session, the red flags were shown due to a scary crash for Alberto Surra (Rivacold Snipers Team) on the back straight. Contact with Ivan Ortola (Angeluss MTA Team) saw the Italian go down and although he was conscious, Surra was being attended to at the side of the track and was taken to the medical centre for a check-up. Surra was later declared unfit for a possible scaphoid fracture of the right hand.

Once the riders were back on track, no one had an answer for Foggia’s Friday pace – and no one had an answer for his Saturday morning pace either. The Italian ended the session four tenths clear of the chasing pack and has 0.384s in his pocked ahead of qualifying.

Automatic Q2 qualifiers

Jaume Masia (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and 2021 COTA winner Izan Guevara (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team) complete the top five, both riders were able to find time in FP3, as Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Tech3), Kaito Toba (CIP Green Power), Carlos Tatay (CFMoto Racing PrüstelGP), Tatsuki Suzuki (Leopard Racing) – despite a crash – and Ayumu Sasaki (Sterilgarda Husqvarna Max) complete the top 10.

World Championship leader Sergio Garcia (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team) is 11th ahead of Riccardo Rossi (SIC58 Squadra Corse), Diogo Moreira (MT Helmets – MSI) and Joel Kelso (CIP Green Power) are the other riders automatically in Q2.

Tune into Moto3™ qualifying at 15:10 local time (GMT-5).
