Ducati presents the most sport-focused Multistrada ever with its new 2022 Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, starting at $28,995. The machine takes a number of elements from the Panigale superbike and Streetfighter naked bike along with aesthetic inspiration from Ducati’s MotoGP prototypes. It’s packing sophisticated tech, a smooth, powerful engine, and will be available starting this February.
Editor’s note: the Multistrada V4 has been reported on during the 2021 Ducati Multistrada V4 First Look Preview, 2021 Ducati Multistrada V4 S MC Commute Review, Is Ducati’s Multistrada V4 the Fastest Adventure-Touring Bike?, and 2021 Ducati Multistrada V4 S First Ride Review, articles and videos.
The beating heart, an 1,158cc V-4 Grandturismo engine, is the hallmark of the entire Multistrada V4 line, but the Pikes Peak edition gets a little extra. Engineers altered the intensity of the rev limiter’s intervention, so riders pushing the tach to its limit get a more gradual alert to move up a gear.
There’s also a new Race ride mode, the first such mode ever to appear on a Multi. Riders will find full access to the 170 available horsepower, 92 pound-feet of torque, and enjoy the fact that Ducati Traction Control and Wheelie Control interventions are reduced, ABS is placed in Level 2, and the Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 electronic suspension is primed for action. The quickshifter is also tuned to handle “extremely” aggressive downshifts in this mode.
The package that surrounds the engine is also calibrated to optimize sport performance. The frame was revised to enhance ergonomics, with particular focus on providing the rider a more sport-oriented position. To achieve this, Ducati placed the footpegs higher and farther back than on the V4 Sport, improving lean angles, and fit a narrower and lower handlebar.
The new frame also accommodates updated bike geometry, tailored for aggressive street riding, and a 17-inch front wheel. Both the front and rear wheels are Marchesini forged aluminum wrapped in Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV rubber. The wheel setup allows the Pikes Peak edition to boast a weight savings of more than 5 pounds compared to the V4 S (the bike in total is over 8 pounds lighter than the V4 S).
As mentioned earlier, the bike comes fitted with Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 suspension, which is also used on the Panigale V4 S and Streetfighter V4 S. This is the first Multi to ever get an electronic Öhlins kit. Settings adjust depending on the ride mode selected as well as to the riding style of the pilot. Manual changes are possible through the bike’s dashboard.
Another element borrowed from the Panigale V4 is the front brake setup, with two Brembo Stylema Monoblock calipers gripping 330mm discs. A Brembo floating caliper and 265mm disc handle braking at the rear.
Further touches include a single-sided swingarm, Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection, a 6.5-inch TFT dash, carbon fiber components, and livery inspired by the Desmosedici GP ‘21. A broad line of accessories will be available for additional personalization, if you’re so inclined.
