Gardner sees off Lowes charge for lap record Moto2™ pole

The Australian took control early in the session, signalling his intent with a stunning new outright lap record of 1:40.667. That lap came under threat almost instantly though, with first Di Giannantonio and then Bezzecchi getting to within a tenth of the fastest-ever Jerez lap. The clock ticked by and, unsurprisingly, not many were able to get near to the electric lap Gardner had laid down until Lowes came along.

Quadruple for Quartararo with fantastic fourth Jerez pole

Any question marks over if someone could cause late drama and steal a fourth straight pole from Quartararo were well and truly put to bed when he found yet another improvement, a 1:36.755, with his final flying lap. The front row wasn’t settled yet though, with Bagnaia, having detached his teammate, throwing one final time attack at it. Could he knock Miller off of the front row? No, but he only just missed out. A tenth of a second was the difference but he was forced to settle for fourth. Sunday’s front row of the grid, therefore, will be Quartararo, Morbidelli and Miller but don’t discount Bagnaia’s Bologna bullet off of the line.

Morbidelli and Binder come through Q1 in Jerez

Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) recorded a 1:36.916 to leave him nearly half a second clear of the field to secure his place in Q2 at the Spanish GP in Jerez. The Italian will be joined by Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) whose early flying lap was enough to hold off the likes of Repsol Honda duo Pol Espargaro and Marc Marquez, as well as teammate Miguel Oliveira.

Quartararo leads Viñales in FP4 crashfest

It proved an attritional session, with a variety of riders finding themselves in the gravel trap. Aleix Espargaro twice had to dust himself down after incidents at Turns 2 & 13. His Aprilia Racing Gresini teammate Lorenzo Savadori also had to pick himself up at Turn 9. Rins took a tumble at Turn 5, while Pol Espargaro had a carbon copy of Repsol Honda teammate Marc Marquez FP3 crash at Turn 7. Danilo Petrucci joined in on the fun late in the session also, with the Tech 3 rider another to fall victim to Turn 2.

Suzuki puts in a stunner for third successive pole at Jerez

On a sunny but cool day at Jerez, Q1 got qualifying going and the first big question since his pitlane start in Doha was asked of Championship leader Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Ajo) as the Spaniard found himself looking to move through. Seemingly immune to the pressure, however, the number 37 topped the session with his last flying lap and headed for Q2 ahead of fellow rookie Izan Guevara (Solunion GASGAS Aspar Team), Carlos Tatay (Avintia Esponsorama Moto3) and eventual front row starter Alcoba to fight for the top 18 positions on the grid.

Tech3 E-Racing’s Lukas Tulovic found some pace to springboard himself into the top three ahead of the reigning World Cup winner Jordi Torres (Pons Racing 40) and Fermin Aldeguer (Openbank Aspar Team). Andre Pires (Avintia Esponsorama Racing), Miquel Pons (LCR E-Team) and Yonny Hernandez (Octo Pramac MotoE) all suffered crashes during the session but, thankfully, all three are OK.

Gardner smashes Moto2™ outright lap record in FP3

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Remy Gardner put together a stunning lap of the Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto to enter the record books as the fastest-ever Moto2™ rider around the Andalucian track during FP3 at the Red Bull Spanish Grand Prix. Incredibly, though, the top eight riders all went under Marcel Schrötter’s previous outright lap record as the pace well and truly hotted up in the intermediate class.

Nakagami tops extraordinary FP3 as 0.098 splits top seven

Huge drama then struck at Turn 7 as the eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez crashed out heavily. The front-end of the Spaniard’s RC213V washed away without much warning at 180km/h, sending him barrel-rolling through the gravel trap and flying into the air fence. Immense concern was etched across the faces of the Repsol Honda team members as the Spaniard remained down in the gravel trap next to his wrecked Honda. Thankfully, the number 93 rose to his feet, sheepishly albeit, and walked to safety. He was later shown arriving back to the box, seemingly okay, after what was, no doubt, a frightening moment. He did, however, head to the medical centre for further checks after his first fall since his injury return, but confirmed he’s “all good” and will return to the track in FP4.

Migno breaks own lap record to top Moto3™ FP3, Acosta in Q1

As Migno set his record-breaking time, a number of riders had already secured passage to Q2, with the likes of Darryn Binder (Petronas Sprinta Racing), Filip Salac (Rivacold Snipers Team) Jaume Masia (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Niccolo Antonelli (Avintia Esponsorama Moto3) all finishing safely within the top 14, however, a number of other riders are conspicuous in their absence.

The Honda Racing CRF250R of MX2 red plate-holder Kyle Webster will wear a Castrol livery this weekend in Canberra as part of a rotating commercial package.

Webster’s bike was in Delcon Civil branding at Wonthaggi’s opening round when he completed the double to open the 2021 season, now adopting the iconic Castrol Honda colours.

“Honda has had great success with Castrol in motorcycle racing for a very long time and I am proud to carry on that tradition with my Castrol CRF250R,” Webster commented.

Honda Racing team director Yarrive Konsky added: “Castrol’s global success is unmatched in motorsport and they have achieved local and international success with Honda, so it was a no brainer partnership. Plus, we believe in their product – that’s the key.”

For Castrol national motorcycle brand manager Duncan Hale, the opportunity to align with Honda Racing and Webster with an increased presence for round two of the ProMX Championship was an ideal one.

“Castrol is a proven product in MotoGP, motocross and supercross, as well as in F1,” Hale stated. “The strategic alignment with the factory Honda Racing team in Australia is important to Castrol. It gives our range credibility, especially if Honda chooses to use it in their factory motorcycles.”

While Webster’s entry has moved across to Castrol for this weekend, Brett Metcalfe will maintain Mongrel Boots and Kirk Gibbs Terrafirma Equipment Sales in Honda Racing’s MX1 program.
