Triumph Motorcycles has revealed a sketch of what their electric motorcycle will look like – and it looks very sporty indeed.
The British company has been working for a couple of years with the British F1 team Williams after receiving millions in government funding to produce electric motorcycles.
Triumph has been surveying its customers since 2012 to see if they want them to produce electric bikes and in 2019 the company issued a trademark filing for the name “Trident” to be used for “all possible classes” including motorcycling gear, accessories, clothing and “electric machines”.
However, for the moment, the bike is called the TE-1 project and there are only a few vague technical details available.
They say it will have “class-leading power, efficiency, charging time and range” thanks to an innovative, lightweight battery.
“The all-new battery has peak power of 170kW and continuous power of 90kW, with a capacity of 15kWh,” their press release says.
“This enables the motorbike to deliver 130kW of peak power and 80kW of continuous power.
“Class-leading system cooling combined with the optimum balance of power and energy means TE-1 can give the rider more electric power for longer and deliver outstanding performance regardless of battery charge.
“The 360-volt system also enables a fast-charging time of under 20mins (0-80%), which is combined with a market-leading target range.”
That last statement is a bit vague, but could mean more than the 360km range offered by Zero Motorcycles with their extended battery pack.
After two years, the project has completed phase two of what they say is a four-phase program, so it could be another couple of years yet before we even see a prototype.
Add another couple of years before a production model is ready.
Triumph CEO Nick Bloor says the project will “provide one of the foundations for our future electric motorcycle strategy, which is ultimately focused on delivering what riders want from their Triumph; the perfect balance of performance, handling and real world usability, with genuine Triumph character”.
Williams spokesman Dyrr Ardash says the “next-generation battery technology” will provide “more power, for longer”.
The company was the original supplier of batteries to the entire grid of FIA Formula E World Championship cars in 2014, a relationship that has been revived for 2022-23 season with Williams Advanced Engineering being awarded the exclusive contract to supply the Gen3 battery system.
WAE also supplies battery systems to ETCR and Extreme-E.

Australian importers have secured about 200 limited-edition Vespa scooters specially designed to celebrate the venerable Italian brand’s 75th anniversary.
The 75th anniversary Primavera 150 and GTS 300 models feature unique styling, special 75th anniversary decals, nubuck leather saddle edged in grey and chrome-plated luggage rack for a specially designed bag.
PS Imports Group Marketing Manager Dale McBride says “supply shouldn’t be too restricted with around 100 of each model.
The GTS and Primavera 75th models are due around late June/ July with pricing announced closer to arrival.
I’ve ridden many scooters and I have to say the best handling and among the best finished are the steel-body Vespas with their unique front suspension.
These two 75th models in retro “Giallo Pirite” metallic yellow should be very special, indeed.
One distinctive feature of the Vespa 75th is the chrome-plated rack and complimentary round bag whose shape replicates the typical spare wheel holder.
Made from velvety-soft nubuck leather in the same colour as the saddle, the bag has a shoulder strap and clips on the luggage rack with a quick-release mechanism. It comes with a waterproof cover.
Like all Vespa special editions, the series is identified with a plate behind the leg shield.
All 75th models come with a 4.3″ TFT colour display and Vespa MIA smartphone connectivity system.
Each Vespa 75th also comes with a Welcome Kit, a vintage steel Vespa plate, a personal Owner’s Book and eight collector postcards with images from the eight decades of the Vespa story.
THE VESPA LEGEND
Vespa’s paint company, Piaggio, filed its first scooter patent on 23 April 1946, beginning 75 years of iconic urban riding.
Piaggio has now made nearly 19 million vehicles with the growth rate not slowing down.
Vespa produced 58,000 scooters in 2004, more than 100,000 in 2006, 180,000 in 2017 and 200,000 units in 2018.

Yamaha was the first Japanese sportbike to go head to head against its European rivals in the realm of high-end carbon fiber-clad limited-edition superbikes with its original YZF-R1M. Fast-forward to today and the Tuning Fork brand continues to offer something special with its 2021 YZF-R1M ($26,099).
Editor’s note: We test rode last year’s YZF-R1M during the 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1M Review MC Commute. Peruse the 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1 And YZF-R1M First Look article for added technical details on this model. Also read the 2018 Yamaha YZF-R1 MC Commute Review to learn more about the previous version and base-model R1.
It’s no secret Yamaha went in a racy direction with its current YZF-R1. The seat is tall, the clip-on-style bars low, and the rider’s rearsets are tucked up high. But with the addition of the R1M’s Öhlins semi-active suspension it becomes a surprisingly versatile literbike. With a few swipes of a button, the R1 goes from mild (pleasingly cushy for a sportbike) to wild (firm damping with loads of feel). However, it does have a cost, tacking on another $8,700.
For that extra cash you also get full carbon fiber bodywork (including tailsection) and Yamaha’s GPS-powered telemetry system that sits atop the passenger tail cowl. Yamaha also includes a traditional passenger seat. Because the telemetry system is 6 years old, the user interface is a tad clunky when used on an iOS-enabled smartphone (the Y-TRAC and YRC Setting apps are Android compatible too). Another gripe is you have to physically remove the rear cowl (with a T30 Torx head) to access the unit’s Wi-Fi password.
But hold the throttle wide open for a few moments and these gripes fade away and are replaced with a euphoric burst of adrenaline. The R1′s 998cc CP4 inline-four is a thing of mechanical beauty. It delivers huge power, to the tune of 165 hp at the business end of the 200-series Bridgestone Battlax RS11 rubber.
Even better is the engine’s sound, delivering a unique guttural roar that sounds like no other motorcycle made…aside from Valentino Rossi’s YZR-M1 MotoGP prototype. An electric up-and-down quickshifter makes for immediate gear exchanges between each of the six transmission cogs.
A tour de force in the electronics department, this YZF comes with all the bells and whistles. But our favorite feature is the enhanced throttle response courtesy of Yamaha’s tweaked ride-by-wire throttle. This boosts the usability of Power Mode 1 (the highest power setting), even in a casual street setting as compared to the original R1M.
Adjustable engine-brake control is another pleasing upgrade. However the electronics perform so well that the added momentum in EBM 2 or 3 during corner entry can tax the stopping capability of the triple-disc hydraulic brakes at an elevated track pace. This creates dreaded front brake fade. Thankfully this condition can be mitigated by selecting the standard engine-brake setting (EBM 1).
Aside from the occasionally fade-prone front brakes, clunky telemetry UI, and the now-too-small iPhone 5-sized color dash display (it was awesome in 2015!) there’s still a lot to love about the ’21 YZF-R1M. It accelerates like a bat out of hell with a polished character and charisma typical of European superbikes. And with the addition of the R1M’s fantastic Öhlins semi-active suspension, the R1 becomes a more friendly streetbike versus the base model.

A rider representative group fears that a Victorian Road Toll Increase Inquiry (RTII) report will vilify riders with inaccurate representations of the danger of riding.
This follows recent police media reports in most states that point out the increase in rider deaths this year but have so far failed to acknowledge the dramatic rise in new and used motorcycle sales in the past year.
The Motorcycle Riders Association of Australia has issued the graph below based on Australian Bureau of Statistics and Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics data which shows motorcycle and scooter fatalities decreasing over the past 10 years.
The RTII report and recommendations to be tabled on Thursday, March 25, 2021, are expected to present “rubbery figures … obviously put together by non-riders”.
The report will available by clicking here on Thursday.
An MRAQ press release says the Traffic Accident Commission has been reporting that riders make up 1% of road traffic but 19% of all road user deaths.
However, in 2020 there were 5,119,560 vehicles registered in Australia, of which 198,151 were motorcycles. That’s actually 3.87% nationally and climbing given the 22.1% increase in motorcycle and scooter sales last year.
At the same time, new car sales were down 20.5%.
And with second-hand motorcycle sales not included in the data, the rider proportion could be much higher.
Deakin University motorcycle safety researcher Dr Liz de Rome has been claiming for years that motorcycles make up about 4% of motor vehicles.
If you count unregistered motorcycles, the percentage of motorcycles in traffic must be higher. “TAC figures are unreliable,” the MRAQ says.
“TAC figures make riding motorcycles look more dangerous than it is.
“These rubbery figures may mean the people putting them together are incompetent, or it may be the anti motorcycle culture in road authorities showing itself.
“No system develops reliable countermeasures to road trauma without reliable traffic/crash data.
“RSV/TACs use of rubbery figures to justify spending and policies that have speed limits reduced and costly wire rope barriers installed while roads are dangerously neglected.”

After cancellations last year during the COVID pandemic, Australia’s innovative First Aid For Motorcyclists program is making a welcome comeback in 2021.
Booking for 2021 courses are now available by clicking here with conditional discounts on some courses by entering the discount code signup21.
It comes as motorcycle injuries and deaths haven’t record levels in some states this year as more and more people are attracted to motorcycling.
Let’s face it; crashes are inevitable and what you do in the minutes after a crash can be vital to the victims recovery and survival.
But most riders are not familiar with emergency first aid procedures and are confronted with questions such as whether to remove the victim’s helmet, how do you secure the scene, how do you stem bleeding, how do you revive an unconscious rider, etc.
These and many more questions are provided in the various courses provided by the FAFM Motorcycle Accident Management which was founded by Roger Fance and Tracy Hughes in 2003.
In 2018, the program was bought by former nurse Debb Geerts and husband Bryan.
Debb is one of the founders of 2WheelBabes which has been running Babe Raid rallies across the country since 2009.
The says she moved on from organising Babe Raids to concentrate on the FAFM program.
“We are here to give you the opportunities to upskill your riding life, to share that knowledge with your friends and riding groups and to bring rider safety to the front of everyone’s minds,” she says.
“Now is a great time to refresh your skills, gain new skills and just be confident that if you did come across a rider down, you know that you could assist during that vital first hour or two.”

KTM and Husqvarna Australia have recalled their current model KTM SX and SX-F, Husqvarna TC, FC and FS, and GASGAS MC supercross and motocross motorcycles over a manufacturing issue that could cause the chan to break.
The official, notice, issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commissions says that a manufacturing fault could make the motorcycle’s drive chain defective, causing it to break or come loose.
That’s not something you want happening when you are in mid-air!
“If the chain is defective, the motorcycle may experience loss in vehicle control and steering performance,” the notice says.
“This can increase the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to the rider and other road users.”
The 239 KTM motorcycles affected are 125SX, 250SX, 250SX-F, 350SX-F and 450SX-F models built between 26 November 2020 and 21 December 2020.
Some 130 Husqvarna TC125, FC250, FC350 and FS450 models produced at the same time are also affected.
And 197 GASGAS MC 125, MC 250F and MC 450F are affected.
The VINs (Vehicle identification number) of affected models are listed at the end of this article.
Owners have been notified by KTM Australia to contact authorised KTM dealers who will replace the drive chain free of charge.
The recall is the second for KTM Australia this year with the recall of the KTM 1290 Super Duke R last week for an electrical fault.
Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.
Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.
If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

KTM Australia has recalled the current model 1290 Super Duke R over a wiring harness issue that could cause electrical failures.
The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the failure could increase “the risk of an accident causing injury or death to the rider and other road users”.
“The rear section of the wiring harness may have been routed incorrectly during assembly. This may have damaged the wiring harness,” the notice says.
“Damage to the wiring harness may cause electrical failures. If the wiring harness is significantly damaged, this could also result in smoke.”
The VINs (Vehicle identification numbers) of the 157 motorcycles affected are listed at the end of this article.
Owners will be contacted by mail, to notify them of the recall. Consumers should contact an authorised KTM dealer to arrange an appointment for inspection of their motorcycle and to have replacement parts installed, free of charge.
For further information, consumers can contact KTM Australia on 1800 644 771 or find their nearest authorised dealer using https://www.ktm.com/en-au/find-a-dealer.html

The 2021 Honda CB1000R Black Edition will be available May 2021 starting at $12,999. (Honda/)
Honda gives its CB1000R naked some love for 2021 with a sophisticated blacked-out look and a few choice upgrades. The bike will be available this May starting at $12,999.
Editor’s Note: We test rode the liter-sized CB during the 2018 Honda CB1000R Pairs Elegance And Performance and 2018 Honda CB1000R MC Commute Review articles/videos.
The new styling gives the machine its 2021 moniker, the CB1000R Black Edition, and touches just about every visible part of the bike. Honda used black plating and black anodizing techniques on the subframe, swingarm pivot plates, exhaust system, front suspension, and handlebar clamp among numerous other places.
In addition to the bold new colorway, the CB1000R gets a new three-level quickshifter for clutchless upshifts. A slip/assist clutch smooths out wheel hop on hard downshifts.
Honda fitted a new 5-inch TFT instrument panel to the bike also.
The CB1000R Black Edition is powered by a 998cc inline-four fit with ride-by-wire and four ride modes. Honda Selectable Torque Control is included to help dial performance in a variety of conditions. It utilizes a steel backbone frame suspended by a Showa SFF Big Piston fork, fully adjustable, and a Showa shock with spring preload and rebound damping adjustability. Four-piston radial-mount calipers grip two full-floating 310mm discs at the front while a single-piston caliper and 256mm disc handle braking duties at the back.
Honda utilizes LED lighting throughout, highlighted by a classic round headlight that emphasizes the brand’s Neo-Sports Café aesthetic, of which the CB1000R is a hallmark example. Other premium design features include a flangeless fuel tank, aluminum alloy detailing, a new rear splash guard that mounts directly to the swingarm, and a passenger seat cover.
The only available colorway for 2021 will be, you guessed it, Graphite Black.

In an announcement released by Indian Motorcycles yesterday, the American motorcycle company was proud to share of the back-to-back victories taken by Indian Motorcycle Racing.
MINNEAPOLIS (March 16, 2021) – Indian Motorcycle Racing, presented by Progressive Motorcycle Insurance, jumped out to an early lead in the 2021 American Flat Track (AFT) SuperTwins standings, as Indian Motorcycle Privateer Brandon Robinson and Wrecking Crew Rider Jared Mees secure back-to-back wins at the Volusia Half-Mile doubleheader.
Robinson’s season-opener win at Volusia Half-Mile I marked his third straight victory, dating back to the 2020 season finale doubleheader in Daytona. After winning his semi and getting a start on the front row in the Main, Robinson jumped out to an early lead but was battling with the second-place rider throughout the race. In his third season as an Indian Motorcycle privateer, the win marks Robinson’s fifth victory aboard the Indian FTR750.
“Despite being injured for the bulk of the 2020 season, Brandon finished the year with incredible momentum, so it was truly exciting to see him pick up right where he left off and reach the top of the box,” said Gary Gray, Vice President – Racing, Technology & Service for Indian Motorcycle. “Having swept the Volusia Half-Mile doubleheader last year, Jared entered round two with fierce determination to secure the win and garner the all-important points at a track he’s exceptionally comfortable and confident on.”
On Saturday, Mees won his semi and was able to return to the front row for the Main. Though, it was Wrecking Crew teammate and defending SuperTwins Champion Briar Bauman who captured the holeshot. After leading eight laps, Bauman was unable to hold on, as Mees made his pass and gained separation with every lap – ultimately cruising comfortably to his 54th career win. The victory also marked his 34th career win aboard the Indian FTR750, a race bike he won two Grand National Championships within 2017 and 2018.
Following the doubleheader at Volusia Speedway Park, Mees sits atop the leaderboard with 42 points. Robinson is closely behind with 39 points, while Bauman’s fourth and second-place finishes keep him within striking distance with 35 total points.
The 2021 AFT season continues on May 1 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Atlanta Super TT. For more information on Indian Motorcycle Racing and the Indian Wrecking Crew, visit IndianMotorcycle.com or follow along on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
