Yamaha introduces the smallest XSR to date with the new 2021 XSR125, slated to hit European dealerships in early June. The 124cc single is aimed at younger and newer riders, as well as riders who don’t yet qualify for (or don’t have a desire to attain) an A2 license.
The mill is the same Yamaha uses in the MT-125 and R125, and is complete with Yamaha Variable Valve Actuation, which allows the engine to perform more effectively throughout the rev range. It provides a little more than 14 hp (11 kW), touching the top of the power output allowed by A1 licence restrictions.
The engine sits inside Yamaha’s Deltabox frame and utilizes a 37mm USD fork with 5.1 inches of travel. The rear shock will provide 4.3 inches of travel. The braking package is straightforward as well, with a hydraulic caliper gripping a single 267mm disc at the front and a 220mm disc at the rear. Light alloy wheels contribute to the nimble character of this 309-pound machine.
A ride like this is less about its mechanical specs however, and Yamaha has given a lot of attention to the looks and details of the XSR125. It will feature an LED headlight and taillight, for example, styling to mimic its XSR700 and XSR900 siblings, and a circular LCD instrument panel. The painted front mudguards match the body colors, and the overall aesthetic is right in line with Yamaha’s retro Sport Heritage line.
The bike will be available in Redline, Tech Black, and Impact Yellow colorways. Don’t expect to see the bike Stateside anytime soon however.
